It actually was exactly a year and a half to the day between this episode and episode 1 of season 3, which happened to be April 1st and they played the first episode on loop all night, a few months before the rest of the season started airing, as an April Fools joke
What makes it even better was it premiered on the same night episode 4 of Samurai Jack's fifth season was scheduled to air. It took over that time slot and enraged SJ fans who were eager for the new episode. But it wasn't all bad. After the rage died down the April Fools joke lead to some great fan art and comics between the two fandoms. My favorite involved Rick using science to give the series an alternate ending.

Man, y'all's voices shaking at the end -- I feel that every time I watch this episode, even knowing everything that comes after, I cry EVERY TIME. The storytelling in this episode is so freaking good. Also, the screaming sun is definitely what my soul must sound like during the mess that is 2020.
With an obvious curve. Flat-earth era interpret the round-earth theory as a curve being extremely visible, not taking into account how huge the planet is, making the curve very slight when looking from a high vantage point
I have a theory that 'squanch' can be used to replace anything, as long as it's negative/nasy/profane. Like here, Squanchy goes "you old bag of squanch" to Rick, or calls erotic autoasphyxiation "squanching". Hence, when Beth uses it instead of 'love', it comes out wrong.
Bird person is a reference to a waaaaay old sci-fi series called buck rodgers. We're talking toy spaceships on visible strings in front of cardboard backgrounds old.
This episode aired on 10/7/15 and the season 3 premier was not till 4/1/17. So yeah, IT WAS A WAIT. And yes they did the season 3 premier on April Fools day. Unannounced. So when people started flooding social media that "Holy crap new Rick and Morty is on RIGHT NOW!!!" nobody believed them.
