I am loving this series. Alaraa and it's shards are truly fascinating. Anything in Magic that leanes so heavily into a small set of colors instead of all 5 is something that really showcases the power of the color pie.

Totally agree, though I'll admit I do wish we got to see more variance with it than going back to 2-3 colors so often though. It'd be nice to see some 4 color factions/planes and places, like Amonkhet, that seem to be drenched in 1 type of mana, to the point it affects the other colors. Not sure what Eldraine really added by making YET ANOTHER bant faction that was all about coexisting with nature or YET ANOTHER military group in mardu. The most interesting color pie twists for that set were for mono-colored creatures imo. In mono black, you had Smitten Swordmaster, who was in love and would do ANYTHING to prove his devotion, and Oathsworn Knight, who is an undead that gives up everything else to continue protecting what's important to them. In mono black you had the fairy godmother trope done with Animating Faerie and the vengeful twist on the little mermaid with Wishful Merfolk because they desired knowledge to attain their goal. The 3-color legendaries were the tamest part, if you ask me.

Oh wow! I didn't expect you to be here. You and Lorbrarians are two of my favorite MTG channels on TH-cam. You already covered the shards in your videos. That was my first real introduction to the shards. I get the philosophy aspect. Lorbrarians are more into geography. It also gets into history. It is intriguing to keep the philosophies in mind while also seeing what kinds of creatures and environments are in each shard.
When watching your series, I found that Bant is the shard I most related to. It seemed cool in its philosophy. It seems the most civilized and abstract shard. It is about nurturing the community so it can progress at a steady pace. White is about community and helping those in need. Green is about nurturing and growth in a physical way. White and green together form a sense of harmony. Blue is about learning with is a mental nourishing and growth. White and blue together is more abstract and for lack of a better term civilized. It can be civilized in a sense in fitting with cities and social structures as opposed to being in tune with primal nature or individuality. Blue and green together has growth and evolution. I personally like the idea of having big grand ideas and moving towards it. With this new Bant video by Lorbrarians there is whole new perspective. Bant is the shard with lots of knights and angels. Oh wow. That is new to me. I guess it makes sense with white being the bridge color. Still it is tricky.
There is also lions with hooves. That is so odd to me. How would that work? I am a major nerd, so blue is the color I most relate to. I am also fond of nature. So that is like green. Together I am very interested in biology. I love learning about animals. I also know the ins and out of how evolution works. This does become like Simic. Yeah Simic is one of the pairs I relate to the most. It is a big part of why Bant is so relatable for me. Lions, and cats in general, are specialized predators. So their feet evolved to have sharp retractable claws. These claws are used as hunting weapons. They are also useful when cats fight each other. When cats are the way they are, they don't develop hooves. The actual ones with hooves are large herbivores. This is something like horses, cattle and deer. They don't hunt, so they don't need claws. Instead, the foot is slimmed down to a hardened stump, which is a hoof. This makes the foot lighter and easier to move. Since such creatures are herbivores, this makes them prey. Their long legs and hooved feet help them quickly run away from predators. Horses are the main animal people use for fast transportation, and they are an extreme example of a hooved animal. Mixing a lion with a hooved animal may look cool, but it is strange. Maybe the people of Bant make hooved lions in a laboratory somewhere. It is not much of a stretch since the Simic colors are in the shard. Lions can use their strong jaws and sharp teeth as weapons. They also use thier think manes to intimidate opponents and protect their necks. The main reason why only male lions have manes is that they fight to defend their pride. So only they really need a mane. Lionesses do hunting instead. They don't need manes, since prey animals don't fight back very much. I guess one takes the fighting ability of a lion, and mixes it with the speed of a hooved animal. Then maybe that is how hooved lions came to be. I am not sure. The one downside is that this creature couldn't feed itself very well in the wild. Maybe this is something that would only survive in captivity. The people would give such creatures food. Maybe they would put a bunch of cat food in a manger. I wonder.

On Bant the lowest castes are revered as the vital foundation by which their societies function, Bant allows members of low castes to rise through the ranks based on deeds; Bant allows those who have been excommunicated to redeem themselves; Bant culture holds no prejudices against any race or species; Bant's highest virtues are selflessness, honor, and duty. So what's the argument against destroying everything Red and Black aligned on sight?

    • @TheSwordsman100
      @TheSwordsman100 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well as White itself admits in it's interview, Red isn't mostly a problem. There are plenty of things Red brings to the table like freedom or love and is the best out of the individual focused colors. Red is actually the second most moral color after White. What makes Red a problem is when it's love of freedom becomes chaos. Just like how White's order and focus on the many can be twisted into a tyrannical government. Heck Blue is actually more a problem left to its own devices.
What makes Bant different is White is control of Blue and Green, which balances out their problems. You'd probably see something similar to either Bant or the Avacyn church if instead of Green being in control of Naya it was White. As for Black? I got nothing, even its one claim of actual virtue (looking out for individual rights) can be found in Red and Blue.

Three more video ideas that you can use after this series:
One: what would a plane that's centered around one color but properly assimilated the other four would look like and what types of societies would be born from them? I'm referring about planes like the shards of alara but ones that also had the main color's enemies in it and that all four of the side colors mainly help and balance out the goals of the centered color while limiting it's negatives. Like a W centered plane were the positive aspects of each color enhances and add their touches to the goals and desires of W in their own ways while still having enough room to do their own things as long as it doesn't go against the values of W. And that each of the other colors positive aspects, specially the enemy colors (R,B), limit/stop the negative more harmful aspects of W.
Two: Five Planeswalker characters with each of them centered around one color but that also properly assimilated the other four into their personalities and ways of doing things. Basically the same as the last idea but in terms of an individual person.
Three: what would five Wedge colored Legendary Dominarian dragons, like Bolas and Chromium, would be? Specifically ones who's main colors are the enemy color of each of their color combinations. How would they look and what personalities they would have?

these stories of the three color planes are really cool. it's easy to see what any of the planes are lacking via grixis, where death chaos and cold rationality rule. but even though Bant seems like the most inhabitable of these planes, it's still far from perfect. it's rigid and hierarchical. the message is clear. every color has some values and a plane lacking in any color mana is missing something necessary for all kinds of life to thrive.

As White is my favorite color in MTG, Bant of course is my favorite shard. My like of it is a bit odd though, as while green is my third favorite color, I do not like White combined with Green alone as its far too collectivist for my liking, while Blue, despite being my favorite color as a color, is one of the two MTG colors I don't like at all, only being slightly better than Black IMO. Here White mostly balances out the things I dislike about the combination resulting in something I can get behind.

Man I love the idea of Exalted. It was by far the worst mechanic in Alara gameplay-wise but it was the most flavorful. I loved the idea of the other warriors casting their sigils to one champion, striding across the battlefield, ready to fight for honor and glory. An RPG around the plane would be amazing.

The thing that never made sense for me about Bant, to the point of being lackluster world design is... if it's a plane of order, without death and chaos, why are there castles? Why are knights so abundant? Why are there battles at all if its chaos and death is ostracized?

I really like the Equipment from Bant, like the Sigiled Sword of Valeron... Hammer of Nazhan... and Sigil of Valor.
I feel like the card Galea, Kindler of Hope should have been saved for a Bant card :^^) (Bant in theme, not just Bant colors)
    Rhox aren't exclusive to Bant?
Also, I've always wondered if Alms Collector is a Bant card... it's got a leonin which could be Nayan, it kinda looks like Mettling Mage... and the background vaguely looks like Bant.

    4 loxodon heirarch
    4 obstinate balloth
    4 wurmcoil engine
    4 centaur healer
    4 nevermore

    4 counterspell
    2 breeding pool

    2 wooded bastion
    3 spara's headquarters
    3 island

    ------------------
    deck3,
    this deck is enduring ideal/enchanted evening/awakening zone/ sandwurm convergence/ aura shards/ overgrown battlement/axebane guardian/wall of roots/ghostly prison.
basically this deck wins with the enduring ideal combos, and enchanted evening. it generally blows up all opponents permanents and wins with sandwurm convergence. also the deck uses westvale abbey since it generates alot of tokens. so you opponent is out of permanents and westvale abbey's transformation can win the match also.
