Gerber Gets One Right: Gerber Dime MT

  • Shorter vid and review of some Gerber light duty keychain sized MTs. The Splice is a bit rough hewn and its tools are hard to open. I do like the blade and its wide tool selection. Smooth it out and make it higher quality and you have the Gerber Dime, which compares very favorably agains the reference standard of the Leatherman PS4. For the money spent, it's totally worth it.///////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale for Dime: 9 out of 10; Splice: 6 out of 10

    I carry a dime every day, love it. After 6 months, I just discovered the tweezers yesterday! The only downside is the blade is dull out of the box.

    The dime looks good at first but the durability is lacking.After a very short time the pliers lose their alignment and the knife blade becomes loose.

    Got the gerber dime, One screw snapped off really easily, so i had to super glue it back. Very low grade. I would never buy gerber again. I will try leatherman next time. (HONEST REVIEW)

    Tip: If you have trouble opening the package ripper blade, take a Dremel and enlarge the divot in the handle around the nail nick. The handle scale on that side is a lot thicker than the other and needs a bigger divot for your nail to reach the nick. Made a world of difference for me when I did it.

    The Dime is the most valuable multi-tool I own, and I have A LOT. The most used item is the package opener, which I use to open all the Amazon boxes with other multi-tool I end up not using :). I gave one as a gift to a mailman, and he is in love with it too. It's by far the most bang for the buck on your keychain, without being too bulky. Trust me, I've tried dozens of keychain tools. I lost mine for a day, ran out bought another, then found the original. YEAH! Now I have one for my EDC.

    I bought the Gerber Dime and the problem is that too heavy to put on the keychain with 2.2 oz. If you want something to put on the keychain try the Victorinox Classic SD which I also have and is not too heavy on the keychain and has way better blade and scissors than the Dime and weights 0.74 oz.

    Theres a set of tiny tweasers in the handle, took me a while to figure this out even though i actually read the back of the packaging. If you look at the bottle opener, theres a very small tab, if you pull it hard enough your tweasers will come out. Hope this helps.

    I just bought the red one and like it very much. Some people seems to dislike the cap opener but I find it handy to always have it there without having to open a tool like most (all?) other multitools and pocket knifes. I'm considering buying one more, the black version.

    just got this today. i like it overall but one problem i've noticed is that when opening and closing it, the top of the handle scales rub on eachother and immediately rubbed off the paint after the first couple times opening it...and a lot of the reviews online aren't great so we'll see how well it holds up

    Nutn, if you carried your light/ultralight MT on you for a year and never used it would you still carry it? Personally I just don't find that I use anything smaller than a medium sized multi-tool. I keep medium or heavy duty MT's in my school backpack, vehicle, tackle box, hunting bag and frame pack. Used to carry my Gerber Vise on my keychain but found that I never using it.

  • @photos4hmnty88
    @photos4hmnty88 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a Leatherman fan but I found a Gerber Vise at REI for 15 bucks and I carry it all the time... the tools are hard to get out, which is frustrating in a jam, but it's held up really well over time. My Vise is over a year old so I can't speak to whether or not they've changed the action of the tools, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Overall its really handy. It's not the most ergonomic tool (like you said, it's squared on the edges) but it gets the job done well.

    I carry the one of the red Gerber dimes on my keys daily and it's awesome for light duty. I just had a crazy idea but could anyone imagine if Spyderco or Cold Steel made some multi tools? And if they did they'd have to be in small, medium and large sizes. I think that would be awesome.

    I am assuming you don't drink much beer. I have found the dedicated cap lifter to be the best part of this little MT (and no, most good beers do not have twist-off caps). I am not sure it is quite the build quality of the PS4, but the design is a home run, and it is a great value. One little hit: if you use a lanyard or put it on a keychain the file becomes unusable due to position; particularly the crosscut side.

    If you look at where Gerber is located (Portland) and the amount of microbreweries located there then you might get an idea as to why they always include the cap opener. The twist offs are on mass produced where micro-brews often aren't..... just say'in.

    I've had 2 of these. The first one got stolen cause my friend liked it so much. I have a black one now. I dont know if I dropped it or used the pliers to hard but the body comes together and the pliers wont close all the way now. I use the thing a lot though. Its great for opening those damn heat sealed packages. I'm getting another one just because I use it so much. Its the right tool set in a tiny package. None of these micro tools will stand the test of time, dont fool yourself. They cant make superior quality in this small a package. I got mine for 17 dollars on amazon. I have a SOG powerassist for real work. My advise, dont use the pliers unless you have to and dont put any real pressure on them. Its a real handy tool for a keychain.

    We use cap lifters because the pop tops (as opposed to screw tops) seal the beer better, thus the beer lasts longer.

    I really like that box opener on the dime, It would really come in handy at work. I have the gerber crucial and i have been using it for about 3 months at work now and it has really worked out well for me. The only thing that i did not like about the dime is that i did not see a pocket clip on it. That's what i love about my Gerber Crucial because my pockets are always loaded with crap and the pocket clip on my Crucial really helps save space so i don't have to be digging around in my pockets

    I LOVE the bottle opener on my skeletool CX that I've been wearing since it was first released 3-4 years ago. I don't drink beer anymore, but I drink a lot of cokes in the bottles, and root beer and sarsaparilla, and I use the opener a lot. I'd be sad if manufacturers didn't put them on the tool, as long as it is not in the way or adds weight/size. Keep the cap lifters coming guys! Thanks for the videos nutn! You must have gotten a lemon. Of the two Squirts and two Dimes I have, I carry the Dime 90% of the time. Have used the hell out of it for 10 months and haven't had a single issue. The Squirt has much better wire cutters (that I never need) and a cleaner feel and higher quality feel to it, but the Dime wins for me due to it's capabilities for my needs. Love the package opener and cap lifter.

    I have the Leatherman Style hanging on a key chain, it's been there for about 8 months. I'll say one thing for it: the scissors, while minuscule, are excellent. Seems I always break a nail opening the clip blade though. Very tight. Way better than nothing. Very unobtrusive, doesn't freak anybody out, that's for sure, not an intimidating defense weapon...but... better than nothing. You have to start somewhere I guess.

  • @BooWilson1
    @BooWilson1 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pretty much all of the smaller higher quality breweries use regular caps. Twist offs are only really used by the large beer corporations like Annheiser busch. So pretty much anything worth drinking requires a cap lifter. But I just pop beers with my edc blade handle or almost any other similarly shaped object.

    I really don't like the fact the lanyard ring is right next to the blades on the splice. For a tiny multi tool, I can see a few uses, but it would be hard for me to justify those unless I needed a dedicated pair of scissors with extra capabilities. The Dime seemed to have gotten the lanyard right. Actually, the Dime is impressing me fairly well.

    im 16 so i still go to school (and plan to continue). for that reason i am hesitant to carry a primary blade. however i do always carry a full size MT. i prefer the leatherman tools because the blades are close to a light primary knife. the SAKs blades cant touch the leatherman. i carry a TTI, but sometimes i take the swisschamp so i can justify it's purchase. keep em coming nutn, still waiting for that zt 0560. peace out.

  • @justgonnastay
    @justgonnastay 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The cap lifter is especially extraneous when you know how to use just about any rigid object to open a bottle with your finger as the fulcrum. Heck, the multitool itself becomes the opener. Now a corkscrew, that's a vital feature.

    Kobalt makes one that's relatively inexpensive, but it's non-locking and is of okay quality. Nutn has a review on it. I just went to close the pliers and the spring for the pliers bent under the hinge area.... its a spring steel rod, reminds me of a clothespin spring kind of thing. @MrDanielWP 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also have no use for mt scissors. have yet to need them when I have a knife. in fact, I've no use for scissors, a file, bottle opener, corkscrew, or those tiny saws.

  • @mbarkn
    @mbarkn 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really like the Gerber Dime, but there's no scissors! What's up with that? That's why I like the Leatherman PS4, it has both pliers and scissors. I can suture with those. Use pliers as a needle driver and the scissors to cut the ends of the suture.
    However, I do like the dedicated package opener on the Gerber Dime. I hate using my regular knives for opening packages. I feel it just dulls the blade prematurely, and I'm not the best knife sharpener. So I'll get the Dime for that.

    I really like to clean my fingers with my pointed knives and or my EDC keychain multi-tool. At first I believed this was the only shortfall of the Gerber Dime. I have since discovered that if the user unfolds one handle of the tool while utilizing the file/Phillips head it is perfect for cleaning fingernails. It extends the tool just enough to get a great grip and angle the file for perfect nail cleaning.

    Always have my OHT and my SAK super tinker on me on and off duty and my Raptor shears when on duty... But I am always on call so I need them.

    Another great review! Thanks again nutnfancy. I've been carrying the leatherman MUT. The thing is a monster though, so I've been looking for something smaller. I'm going to pick up one of those dimes.

    Lol I picked up the solstice a couple years ago and decided to see what TH-cam has to say about it and BAM a nutnfancy video. Awesome. I keep it as my EDC. I need to invest in a leatherman.

    I bought this gerber on recommendation of Nutn. Tried to bend a piece of wire on a rabbit cage and bent the tool. It is not heavy duty enough for me. I'll stick with my Leatherman juice S2, thank you.

    I got a solstice in a "gift set" with a paraframe.
    It was promptly placed in my "catch all" box and has NEVER come out and never been used.

    It's not a cap lifter- it's a fingernail puller. I collect debts for my boss and use that feature all the time to motivate his clients. The nail puller on the Dime is well designed and always at the ready.
    When I was using the fingernail puller on the Squirt, it would take me two or three tries to get the nail off- not fun (for me or the client).

    @nutnfancy I have to disagree with a point you mentioned in this video. "Multitool Continueum" is one of my favorites. Sorry if I spelled it wrong. This was also a great vid!!

    Have to say I'm one of the rare exceptions then. Gerber Multi Plier 800 with Victorinox Bitholder/Crank on me EVERY DAY. At least if the day involves wearing pants, which is usually the case. Before the Gerber, I had the Victorinox Swisstool CS Plus on me in the same way, which has too stiff springs on it for my taste. I repair stuff often at Uni, and it's just so convenient to always have some pliers, screwdrivers and a few TORX bits with me.

    Just got the dime. Really cool, but I can't get the flathead out to save my life (I ground my fingernail to a pulp) also, I don't really like the keychain attachment it has, puts it too close to my thick(er) keyring, so I'm coming up with ideas on short chains to improve the length.
    Nutnfancy, I noticed you didn't say anything about the tweezers. They're actually decent. Took out a sliver I got pretty easily.

    NutnFancy, dude I would suggest you go to Wally World and get some good 3/0 fish hooks and try the cutters on them, alot of us bass fish also and that would be the ultimate knowledge factor when we buy a multi tool....

    wish leatherman would bring back the older P4 and S4. loved the fit and finish on those MTs. esp the smooth and colorful and shiny handle scales.

    I have a couple of the Gerber mini tools, the blades & tools don't lock so they are useless imo. I went with the new version of the LM Skeletool. And the Surge. The ST 300 is in my EDC pack. I also don't like the LM mini tools for the same reason.
