Even if you are poor, there is no excuse to have trash all over the inside and outside of the house. Nothing that some trash bags, Fabuloso, a mop and bucket, and a vac couldn't take care of with some elbow grease!
Those electrical panels are a tragedy waiting to happen. I wouldn't be too surprised if the one with the missing cartridge and scorch marks above where it went is what should have been powering the heat strips. That they'd even try to run those off such old service...the mind boggles. I'm not against fuses or old electrical service equipment in good condition (not that this was), but at the very least, someone needs to get those 30 amp fuses *out* of there!
They're looking for an electrical fire. All those 30 amp fuses on the 115 volt circuits, only 2 of them are 20 amp . I know that's not why you're there.
Most retrainers are stripped out, broken, or missing because the majority of these folks don't know how to back their clutch off of their drill chuck or gently squeeze and feather the trigger.
Retired now, but I remember those days where you make a service call only to discover everything has been cobbled together and you spend more time trying to figure out what is what. Patience and persistence
Before I retired I remember a few, not many, homes where I did not have the heart to charge. I would cover the service call in some other way and as senior tech I was never questioned about it. We have to look out for each other.
@@johno9163 Same here, I changed professions though, also I wrote on the ticket. "Advised customer their electrical was not up to code and was dangerous." In case the house caught on fire and they tried to sue me. The worst one I ran across was when someone bought a whole bunch of used 30-amp disconnects and wired them in parallel with the main panel. The issue was a loose ground on the 220 source so the dryer didn't work.
That house is an electrical fire waiting to happen. All those 120v fuses are green which are 30amps!! Those are the least of the problems, too. Yikes!!!
I have a friend that does the same work that you do and my friend goes out once a month and does a free service on someone's AC and if anything is wrong he will fix it at his expense now that's what all of us are supposed to do be kind to one another and always help others❤❤
Nothing like a whole fuse box with all 30 amp fuses! That was the biggest problem with fuses - if the 15 amp keeps blowing, try a 20. Still blows try a 25 or 30. I'd bet most of their 120 volt circuits have 14 gauge wire and should have 15 amp fuses.
My first apartment was like that, turning on the AC unit blew the 15. The Super told me to just put in a 20. A few years later my sister moved into the same building, after I'd moved across the country. It eventually burned down.
The burned up fuse block on the top right is most likely the one for the heat strips. And you should report that janky electrical to the power company, it is extremely dangerous and they may be stealing power. With those kids in the house, that, plus the damaged fuse boxes gives me major concern for that family's safety.
Those Trubo 200s are great for getting out of a bind. I almost always go back and install the "correct" capacitor, unless it isn't likely I'll be able to come back. Then I sell them the Turbo 200. On a different note, Klein makes a wire tracing kit for dead circuits. It's the Klein ET450. Makes tracing down circuits so much easier. That being said, I would definitely send that job over to a sparky.
There is a shed in the yard, over the fence. Metal roof, rough shape. That second overhead cable went to that shed. Nobody is stealing power. Top fuse box has a missing pull-out and melted socket. Clearly a long-term high-current load. I suspect this is (was) your heat strips. I think the capacitor failed, unknown to the resident, causing the heat strips to run almost constantly, eventually overheating the fuseholder (probably corroded connection). Somebody seeing/smelling the smoke yanked out the fuse, possibly not knowing it went to the heat. Now there was no heat at all, prompting the call to you.
We’ve all seen those types of jobs over the years Curtis. Everyone and their brother has worked on it and no one comes back. Guess this person failed home economics class. You did the best you could with what your afforded. Happy holidays brother.👍👍🇨🇦
You’re a great tech and it would be an absolute honor to work alongside you. We need more guys like yourself in California . You would also significantly slow down on those darn Heat Pumps over here :)
Finally got our fiber connection established. Sure glad to see you and Riley! Hope you both have the very Merriest Christmas ever. That place sure needs attention in many different ways! Our place is a work in progress but other than several wood piles that we pull fire wood from I try to keep junk picked up 😅 even inside lol! The heat here is a outdoor wood boiler so the mess stays outside. Good lord!! Fusestats ! I though they dried up years ago. Sure was probably a good idea in the day but no longer
I am amazed how you work in such filthy homes and your work in crawlspaces and attics with no flooring Merry Christmas. Keep the videos coming. I have learned a lot from them.
in the bottom fuse box (main+range+4x30) the two pullouts are both turned off. The word "OFF" is shown right-side-up, and if you look closely behind the handle, the other words, upside-down, read "REVERSE FOR OFF."
Electric heat still has to function, Atleast on the first sequencer due to defrost. It'll freeze the tenant out when it defrosts and on colder days will never satisfy thermostat
He does work for those home warranty companies like AHS and Old Republic. Unless the upscale plan is purchased, they will not cover improper installs or lack of maintenance. Old Republic is a little more forgiving than AHS. I worked for a company that took these calls and it never ceased to amaze me at how people expected everything to be fixed or to install a new unit for the $55 trade service call fee.
That zip and screw that is included with the Turbo 200 is to secure to the back panel in the upright position Curtis. Great job having one of those in your van btw. Be sure to come back and remove it with the correct dual run so you have it ready for next time.
You pulled on those pull-outs way harder than I would have. I've seen them break in half before and would be way too scared of breaking it and turning it into my problem.
My question is laiding tools or a tool bag around in someone’s home, obviously some folks have very infestation of roaches. Have you found them in your truck or at your home?
Poor does not give a person to live in filth. Especially with children. When I first started in this business I was sent to many low income homes paid for by the county to do repairs and installations. The things I saw still make my stomach churn. I can still remember the odors and that was 30 years ago. This video just pisses me off how people choose to live. Good job to you though for enduring and completing the task.
I personally do not carry dual capacitors. I like to carry individual oval capacitors and build mine. Reasoning is I believe the additional surface area of two capacitors (and sometimes 3 as in two 40's for an 80 and one 5 to equal an 80/5 or whatever combination) helps to dicipate the heat that often takes them out. Ironically in my area i'll be buying like 40 of the 5mfd because that is the most common for cond fan motors. Plus in the future, because it always seems to happen years down the road, you just replace either or. It has worked really well and seems to extend the life somewhat. Just my $.02 As always great job letting us ride along.
That may not fit in all units, like a mini split , looks tacky and waste time, I film all my calls for the customer to see, I would feel embarrassed to show 3 caps and charge them for all 3, when a dual cap is only a few bucks. them
If I did HVAC work I would have a drawer full of pre drilled large breeze worm drive clamps on the truck just for caps, or at least pre perforated plumbing pipe strap.
Its also highly important to remember, that weeds and tweeds are just as harmful to the units as well. Highly recommend a cleaning. Awesome video brother.
Interesting. Please update with a part 2, if only to let us know what the electrician did. I'm guessing they probably aren't going to go for all new breaker panels. Hopefully there were no pennies in those fuse boxes!
Been there done that for sure. The electric part inside better left to an electrician for sure. Those panels are ancient and brittle etc. good call on that👍
I feel so sorry for those little kids. They sound like typical innocent little fellows. I wish I could help. Those fuse panels are outdated, abused and scary.
I keep thinking its time for these homeowners to see your video's and HOPEFULLY notice the shit hole(with kids nonetheless) that they live in. I'm sure it smelled great also.
Any idea on why my outdoor Trane heatpump unit makes a high pitched constant rattle sound when it gets below 40°? I know when it goes to defrost it makes a normal whoosh sound, this isn't that. Thanks Curtis!
Lived in many old mobile home with a panel like that when I was a young man out getting started. Rent was cheap on those old dumps. Fuse would blow and you'd stick a penny in there used bolts in some fuse holders. How myself or any of my friends kept from burning those old dumps down is beyond me I guess providence looks after young fools....

Hey Curtis- the 1950's called and they want their fuse panel back.
Anyone else hear the toddler in the backround say WTF when Curtis pulled the second fuse block? 🤦♂️😆
Yes, just watching this masterpiece now and I was about to comment 😂
Sure sounded like it. Sad, but who among us didn't test the boundaries when we were young?
😂 my heart goes out to you my friend
Oh yes loud and clear..
Is it any wonder that some children that grow up in such a toxic environment have a hard time adjusting to a society

Yes
11:20 😮 I haven’t seen buss or clear round fuses in a very long time.

A short waiting to happen with that old wiring last thing you want to do is heat them up.
This is my reaction to seeing these homes too! Makes me grateful that I set a higher standard for myself
They're looking for an electrical fire. All those 30 amp fuses on the 115 volt circuits, only 2 of them are 20 amp . I know that's not why you're there.
Yeah, smoke stains above that one pull and plug fuse. I can just imagine the insulation on those old cloth covered wires.
Talking about trashy is an understatement.
I was really feeling that self-tapping screw not going in.😂
Sorry Curtis. I had a bit of a laugh as well.
💯

Like when the manufacturers used the Henry Ford method on their wire colors? Any color as long as its black. lol What a joy to work on.
I think that keeping a spring loaded center punch in your tool bag would make life way easier some days.

@@dougray30 They came up with retrofit perma fittings to limit the sizes that could be used.
It would be a good idea to write the capacitor size on the cabinet with a sharpie so the next tech doesn't have to figure it out
The next guy can just add it up clearly on the Turbo. Not hard to figure out.
