I got a funny feeling that the 5uf section of that run cap was good and that 5uf taped up capacitor had been there much longer..

Looks similar to my LENNOX seer 10 in Arizona . 25 years old. Never put freon in yet . I do my own maintenance . coil cleaning , capacitor and contactor replacements every 2 years . Got spares for everything . Thanks TED

Old copper is different. Wish new ones had the same copper structure. Too thin now or they mix in aluminum end loops on the coils.

It's obvious that you have a great deal of experience with HVAC.....and you have an upstanding/outstanding work ethic. The industry need more guys like you, that's for sure! It's such a pleasure to watch you go through the troubleshooting the way you do.......I have learned a lot! So thanks so much!

Never seen a booster cap connected like that. But I have seen several times where someone had a "Buddy" replace a capacitor and made a mess of things. Have a good one.

Sweet...Good thing they didn't call the last HVAC that came out there!
Our condenser is an Amana 4 Ton R22 installed June of 1991. It's on its original capacitor and fan motor and never leaked. They put a slab 5 ton evaporator with it. We use it 4 months of the year usually and its a good 95 to 105 during those summer months. August is the worst as it rarely cools down at night enough to not be needed. Planning to install a new fan motor and capacitor as the fan blade isn't coasting to a stop as well as it used to. Going with a Nidec US Motors Mojave as it has "ball bearings" vs. self aligning sleeve bearings. Hope it keeps on going and going...

Well, conceivably, but this isn't a DC power supply. An AC motor capacitor discharges on every half-cycle and should discharge through the motor winding when power is removed, shouldn't it?

Had a Goodman at my old house in Florida. After 1 year the plastic drain pain cracked and started leaking. Since it is attached to the evaporator it was replaced under warranty. Also had to have a valve replaced in it. Not covered under warranty at that time. Never again.

Ted, what amazes me is of all the units I see you work on, I rarely see one with ecu condenser fan. I've had one for a number of years (didn't have a clue when the guy put it in.). I'm guessing they are cheaper on the front end for the service company?

I have an old Janitrol 2 ton r22 unit that looks exactly like that. It was install in 1985. Now in 2024 it still runs great and never had any problems except replaced the capacitor once about 10 years ago. We are having a major heat wave here in Dayton, OH with 100* temps now. Our home has never gotten over 71 when set at 68. We set it and never turn it off or change the setting. Last year I bought a new fan motor with blades, capacitor and relay just in case through a Goodman distributer. Need to paint the cover though.

regardless if the hardstart was wired up wrong its a dis-service to your customer to remove it from the system instead of just wiring it up properly the hard start can only help that old weak compressor now whats gonna happen is they are gonna eventually call up someone else and get sold another hardstart when they already had one to being with

Once in the middle of the summer doing a bunch of calls I had flipped the breaker off in a panel like that one. I quickly tried to discharge the run cap before touching the terminals. A big ball of fire hit my nut driver. The breaker was bad on one leg. Just like you the compressor shut off when I flipped it. That would have hurt, lol.

It was some DIY, but my mom's AC fan capacitor failed. I got a bamboo stick and have the fan a spin and it started. So, until the capacitor could be replaced, I told my mom to give it an assist with the stick. She would wait until it got hot, turn it to very cold and give the fan a spin. It only needed to be done a couple of times a day. I told her to turn the temperature higher at the thermostat when it turned off or she got too cold.

Mandate is 25 but places have been using it since last year on certain types of units. This year most manufacturers are starting to switch your standard split systems over to the new refrigerant type they're choosing to use.
It sucks more for the technician side. The cooling side should be similar to R410a that's currently used. Your 1997 unit uses R22 most likely which isn't even imported into the country anymore as of like 4 years ago.
R22 usually is colder but colder isn't the point of a/c it's just the byproduct of running. Newer refrigerants are for air conditioning meaning they run longer to remove humidity instead of just running fast and cold to just change temperature. Changing the temperature doesn't help if the humidity doesn't change and stays 60% or something crazy like that. You may not have that issue but some installs do because of the mentality of installers back then was to just put a bigger unit in.
Now when sized correctly it runs longer and puts out temps through the ductwork in the 40's and 50's

Curious as well. My package unit is on it's last legs and uses R-22(2008). If I replace it now I want to be sure to get a unit with the new freon vs the current stuff(410a). Right now there are 2 competing choices....R-454b and R-32. R-32 has been used for several years in other countries while R-454b is new and unproven.

A Goodman replaced the outside unit that I had in 1994; the year that I bought my house. The inside unit, Singer, was original to the house when it was built in 1968. I personally replaced the furnace's gas control valve in 2020. The compressor on the outside unit finally conked out in early 2022. That's when I had both inside and outside units replaced. That Goodman/Singer combo were workhorses. I don't know the tonnage size of the unit, but it's a small house; 1,100 sq ft. Thank you for sharing your video and for having this channel.

I salvaged a goodman that was replaced by the homeowner and 10 years after its so called retirement it still cranks (cant forget to knock on wood),. Older is better at least in this case. Heres a tip shared by a trainer once go with 440 VAC capacitors. An upsell is mastic the ducts to maximize air flow into the conditioned space. And heres some infor worthy of note I did research of my area deep south Texas and in 1977 there were around 10 days of 100 degree days guess how many there were in 2023..........98. Just in case someone in our universe has any doubts on getting into the ac repair business.

So, where was the "FAKE" component?
Improper installation does not mean components aren't real.
What parts house sells "fake" components?
And please tell me it wasn't you that put "AC ReNew" in there!

First thing I noticed when you opened the panel was the hard start had both wires on the same terminal. DOH!!!!
Clearly, a hack was in there at some point.

All contractors hate Goodman because they sell to the public. That's all I have ever run myself and they run forever.
