Deep Dive into Eddie Van Halen's "Live Without a Net" Solo
The "Live Without a Net" video features a legendary performance by Eddie Van Halen, particularly his mind-blowing solo. Eddie opens seated, showcasing his delicate touch with a fingerpicking melody. The instrumental "316" is named for the March 16, 1991, birthday of Eddie's son Wolfgang, who later went on to be Van Halen's last bass player, although the song predates his birth (as part of it was used by Eddie at the beginning of his guitar solo on tour, as seen on Live Without a Net, and was originally written for 5150). On Wolfgang's 25th birthday on March 16, 2016, his mother Valerie Bertinelli posted a photo on her Facebook page of her and Eddie during her pregnancy with the caption "Ed playing 316 on my growing tummy, before he knew he would call it 316" Eddie can be seen in the photo playing an acoustic guitar on top of Valerie's pregnant belly.
The second part is where Eddie truly takes center stage. "Eruption" explodes with a flurry of notes, showcasing his mastery of speed picking, tapping, and the whammy bar. His fingers dance across the fretboard with incredible accuracy, creating a whirlwind of sound. While Eddie's technical prowess is undeniable, his solo isn't just about speed. He weaves in melodic phrases and harmonic ideas throughout, keeping the listener engaged beyond just the technical showmanship. A crucial element of the solo's impact is Eddie's signature guitar tone, achieved through a combination of his playing style, modified equipment, and effects pedals, adds a raw and powerful texture to the music.
Impact and Legacy:
Eddie's "Live Without a Net" solo became a landmark in rock guitar history. It inspired countless guitarists and redefined what was possible on the instrument. Beyond technical skill, the solo showcases Eddie's ability to connect with the audience. His energy and passion are infectious, making the performance captivating even for non-guitarists. Even decades later, Eddie's "Live Without a Net" solo remains a benchmark for rock guitar playing. It's a testament to his innovative spirit and enduring influence on the world of music.
Eddie Van Halen's solo in "Live Without a Net" is more than just a display of technical prowess. It's a masterfully crafted piece of music that combines melody, emotion, and pure rock and roll energy. It's a performance that continues to inspire and amaze guitarists and music fans alike. - บันเทิง
I’m a “guitarist.” The wallpaper on my computer is a picture of Eddie Van Halen eating a sandwich outside of a McDonald’s in the 70s. I have it there to remind myself that there was something Eddie did that I can do too.
😅😂😂😂
I can play alot of Van Halen songs note for note.. but ya need those fingers and tone to make it sound like him.. RIP good sir and thank you. ♥
Things are always on the UP on your side, ain't it baby? I can always dig that.❤
First... All I would say is that this never gets old.... Eddie at his best! RIP...
almost 40 years ago !! ...amazing
I"ve watched this solo more times than I could count, both on VHS and DVD. To see it upscaled like this with all the extra detail is like seeing it again for the first time. Keep up the good work!
Yup I also worn out my vhs tape as well
That was the first time I saw Eddie do a solo. I had never seen VH live until this tour. I saw this before I went to the show about three months later. It's still amazing to watch and never gets old.
Effortlessly , accuracy, controlled speed, a guitar legend. RIP Eddie, now amaze the angels with you soulful magic
God sent this man for the World 🙏
AMEN!!!!
They should hire you to re-release the whole concert 🙏🙏🙏 Brilliant yet again .. Thank you so much for doing this for us fans 🎸
I'm available... 😉
A moment the universe will never forget
The King of Kings
I remember showing my buddies this when it came out in 85/86. In 88, I was 16 and wiggled up to the stage at the 1st concert of Monsters of Rock in East Troy, WI. VH was the headliner. Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, and the Scorps were merely opening acts lol. The experience was the Woodstock of my generation. Now, at 53, my wall in my office consists of Kramers, the iconic 5150 and Frankie guitars (that I built). Seeing this, in this kind of resolution, is absolutely fantastic. Thank you for doing this. You rock!!!
Right before Sammy yells "Edward Van Halen!!" toward the end of the solo, it sounds like Eddie is going to blow the goddamn PA system right out of that building. Absolute fucking legend. RIP Eddie.
4K!! Just Awesome!!
it realy dosen't get any better than this.
Sick job! Please 5150 live without a net ! Thx!
I have watched this solo hundreds of times...to see it in 4k for the first time is just amazing. Thank you!
Please remember that before he got really sick, in an interview, he said that his cancer was caused by him keeping his metal picks in his lips. I would post a link, but it's been scrubbed from the net. RIP😢❤
Thank you so much for this. I’ve watched this 100s of times. Maybe when I can finally watch it without my eyes tearing up I can appreciate how clear it is
That scream 6:37 gets me everytime. Guitarists know what i mean.
best guitar solo i've ever seen. thank u so much for putting it in 4k. EVH is the KING..
I played every gig of this tour, with their opening act, B.T.O........what a year it was, so great to find such a great quality video...(I have some really poor quality videos form this tour on my YT channel - not great, but very rare, as I shot it myself with a rented video camera)
These are amazing! Please do 5150 next. 😁😁
My god. He is the king. GOAT
Awesome job. Thanks so much for doing this.
Beautiful
Looks fantastic! 😎👍
You should put the whole concert in 4k. That would be amazing.
To me, this is the greatest moment of rock guitar in history. Captured on film/recording anyway. My absolute favourite part is actually what he does at 4:32. Sounds SO cool. Haven't really heard anything like it, before or since. Does that have a name?
No one can agree on the name. It's called palm harmonics or rolling harmonics.

@@CrosscutFilmsSask Brilliant, thank you! Does anyone else do it?
@@Roddrummer It was pretty popular in the 80's amongst the hair band guitarists
@@CrosscutFilmsSask hmmmm….no wonder I haven’t heard it much…
Thank YOU!
Holy Bajeezus Belt! That is the best ever
I can't believe the picture detail that was able to be pulled from the original source. I never would have expected the grain of the body wood to be captured by 80s video. Damn.
Damn great job! You did a better restoration than "official" ones. Congratualtions, looks and sounds incredible! I am sure Eddie would be proud.
Thanks! *tips hat
Just noticed something watching this in 4K. We all know that Ed smoked like a chimney but l have never seen him light a cigarette on stage.
Were all of Ed’s cigarettes pre lighted for him?
Did Ed’s cigarettes spontaneously light because of his smoking hot guitar playing?
👁👄👁thank you so much‼️
It's just brilliant.....❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
think Sammy was doing more than just sitting down and having a cold one! :)
The Best There Ever Was 🎸
The GOAT!
i still have Eddies picks from monsters of rock
Awesome
❤✌
Thank you for doing this. As a guitarist who started playing after his passing and growing up in the 80s as a fan, his skill and creativity are so inspiring. I love watching other cultures and youngsters reacting to this video. Their reactions are sometimes better than the video and that's saying g a lot. The one everyone reacts to is out of sync with the audio and so annoying to watch as a musician. Hopefully this becomes the go to... Please like this videos guys and gals.
Grabbed it before its removed thanks!
ТЬы просто МЕГА ГЕНИЙ!!!ОБОЖАЮ ТЕБЯ!!!ВОЛШЕБНОГО ПЕРЕРОЖДЕНИЯ БРАТ!!!
I know this is a long shot but is there anyway you can upload the entire concert 4k? Would be amazing. Thank you for this.
It would be an awful lot of work as each individual scene in these needs to be tweaked. It'd take me well over a week to do and I only do these when I don't have a paying gig occupying my time.
But never say never
It's not "What" Eddie Van Halen played, It's not "How" Eddie Van Halen played, It's "THAT" Eddie Van Halen Played. One in a Billion.
How about some Rush and QUEENSRYCHE operation mid crime concert
All depends on whether the rights-holders allow me to upload them
Could you do some of the old stuff w Dave?
Last time I tried, it was blocked by Warner Bros
I've only just realised this footage must have been from a couple of shows then patched together.....cigarette disappears around 1.20 and reappears around 1.40 on the head of the guitar.
It was filmed on two consecutive nights in New Haven.
what’s that first part he played
God is watching
There's a lot of J.S.Bach in that solo.
Rad🤘✌️
