What Is Cetane and How Does it Impact Combustion in a Diesel Engine?

  • As the piston rises in a diesel engine, air is compressed to very high pressures, which also generates temperatures capable of igniting diesel fuel. Therefore, combustion timing is controlled by when the diesel fuel is injected into the combustion chamber. In reality, the combustion does not start instantaneously. There is a relatively short delay between the initial injection of fuel and the start of combustion. This time delay, or ignition delay, is essentially the effect of the cetane number of a diesel fuel.
Fuels with higher cetane numbers have a shorter ignition delay and combustion begins sooner, and as a general rule, offer better engine performance. This can lead to easier starting, less white smoke on start up, less noise, and lower emissions. All diesel fuels have a given cetane number from their basic formulation. But often, fuel marketers use cetane improving additives to increase the cetane number to further enhance the performance benefits of their higher quality diesel fuels.

My 300 d is a "slow car" but since I''ve been using cetane boosters it just feels Phenomenal!! Feels like a sports-car

Heads up to my diesel heads in California. HPR diesel is a biofuel that has a cetane of 75, costs almost half the price of Diesel#2 and has reduced emissions, with increased perfomance

Thanks for the info. How much is it per gallon?

BioDiesel does have higher Cetane, but actually contains less BTU's than regular #2 Diesel, so saying that it has increased performance is not entirely accurate. It may fire sooner and cleaner, but not as much power.

@@OptiLubeAdditivesLubricants HPR Diesel is technically not considered biodiesel.
It's actually 65 cetane rating, but thats really high for diesel. I notice much quicker throttle response, but I believe you are correct about the BTU content being lower. With that said, the manufacturer claims more power and torque.

If you run optilube boost in high concentrations it can boost your mileage insanely, with the crazy diesel prices it's worth it.i run 1:100 and double my mileage the truck runs so much better
