Super Mario 14 is a hack of a Japanese exclusive called Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3: Taiketsu! Zouringen. Which took me way too long to type.
I realized one day that these bootleg NES things are the modern equivalent of those old LCD games.
Except now we're in the future where there's a surplus of old cellphone screens, and digital storage is so cheap they can just slap hundreds of games on there and churn em out.

Not sure if this has been pointed out yet but the "Sup" game thing is supposed to be reminiscent of the "Supreme" brand that was insanely popular in 2017/18.
I was gonna say that. Famous for selling extremely expensive stuff just with "supreme" slapped on them, like literal bricks.

Well like the Soviet Union, the Sup was red and had the same anthem and while both looked good at first, they soon turned into a crushing disappointment to those who had hands on experience with it......
Some of the bootleg consoles are fascinating to look at, had no idea there was an NES Sonic game.

I thought both were about the same age as Charlie Brooker was writing for PC Zone at the same time that Digitiser was on Teletext. And both seemed to be doing their best to be like Your Sinclair. Not that that is a bad thing at all. It's far better than being like those po-faced, joyless, no fun approaches to games in lesser publications.

Friend of mine has a couple of these he uses for trips because they are dirt cheap and he really doesn't care if it gets lost or broken. I've seriously thought about one that just has NES, SMS, SNES and MD games on it for travel since I really am paranoid about my Switch getting lost or stolen.
I never expected to hear the Anthem of the USSR/Russian Federation when I tuned into Digitiser today.
Loving the near-torrent of Digi at the moment. It's almost like having a daily page that updates - what a crazy concept! Quick Q: that tiny camera of Gannons - is it really shit or does he just need to read the fucking manual? It's two squares on my Digi bingo card.
Too much of it though? This worry rattles through my mind...
Also: yes, Gannon's camera is a piece of shit.

I looked at the channel and it seems that we're getting two 'minis' a week which feels generous but not over the top. It's certainly keeping me sated as I wait for The Live and Series 2, and adds to the idea that Digi is now an ongoing, living breathing multi-headed beast like a big friendly 16-bit Hydra.
He must have bought it at the same market stall as the Sup.

I've seen so many of these bootleg consoles thanks to watching Vinesauce Vinny's "plug and plague" streams. They all tend to boast about having hundreds of games, but 80% of the library are copies of the first 20 games with some cosmetic changes and there might be like a handful of actual decent games on it. Even a kid would get bored of these things quickly. These bootleg consoles frequently share games with one another.
At least the bootleg Game Boy has a rendition of the USSR national anthem.

Deflower is a hack of Lode Runner. I too was disappointed.
Its a decent game though.
Those things are objectively bad, but dammit, I like them.
If they are full of no name Chinese games, then not worth it, but if they are $20 USD, or less with some good NES ROMS on them, then they can be fun to look at, but with emulation being so dang easy these days I usually just don't bother.
You know what I'd really like to see you guys check out or review...The GPD systems or anything by Game Park really, they're like the Rolls Royce of cheap Chinese knock off portable consoles. They're products are actually really quite nice and very well made, and are the perfect device for a retro gamer who wants to play on the go and who doesn't mind a bit emulation. They pretty affordable too. Plus, unlike raspberry Pi consoles, you don't worry about having to put it all together yourself
Back in 2016-17, they had a successful indigogo campaign and came out with the GPD Win. A rather cool Portable Windows (a full desktop version of Windows) device that is about the size of a smartphone with clamshell design. Because it's windows, has decent specs (for its small size) and has a dual analog stick controller built into the keypad, the emulation possibilities are pretty endless. I've wanted to pick one up for the longest!
Or if you really want to go for something similar but extremely obscure and a bit older, you should check out the GP32! It was a handheld console that was made by South Korean company "Game Park" which was actually funded by the South Korean government. It was only officially released in South Korea and parts of Europe, but because of it's popularity there was ton of un-official distributors who sold it in the US and elsewhere as well. Even though, it wasn't a huge successful despite all the hype surrounding it, it grew a cult following because of it's unique capabilities, namely portable emulation. Something that just wasn't around back then.
It's a very interesting story and I think it'd perfect for this channel!

So many versions of these, all shite but its relative at that price. LCD technology has got so good and so cheap - I had an early lcd portable tv thing and it was utterly bobbins. I tried to watch Wimbledon on it whilst sitting in a tent in the rain and the lcd screen was interleaved or something technical such that the ball would literally disappear in the missing lines of the frame as it crossed the court. And don't get me started on the game gear which would cost you the price of one of these in batteries just to run out as you sat down on the bus...
As soon as you played the menu music I realised why they chose to make it red. Nothing to do with the 'Sup' brand. Lol. Putin would be pleased, lol.
I was at the V and A museum while back for Thier video game exhibition, which was brilliant and in the gift shop they were selling a load of new clone handhelds and plug ins too which was real odd considering how dodgy and unofficial they are, guess it was a cheap bulk buy
Ive also seen these with SNES mini shells with nasty versions of the controller

@@Digitiser it was brill it really showed respect to the industry and highlighted interesting issues, thing I found most interesting was pong coded entirely in Arabic, it highlighted how certain languages and countries that don't use numeral symbols (123) which standard in code are at a disadvantage some cultures who want to get into coding and games
When you say the plastic seems cheap, how cheap are we talking? Where people see rubbish I tend to see a bit of potential, and I was saying to myself hey I'd play that for Chip and Dale alone, loved that game, but then later in the video was quite disheartened to see the lag, a major turn off for me.
Although I did think if the shell could manage it, you've got yourself a decent little screen and case to fit a pi zero in and the dip on the back casing could be modified for shoulder buttons. I'm not sure if there would be any way to reinforce the case if it is too flimsy but it would be something I would definitely try! I never seem to come across these things in the shops though unfortunately, they would sate my crafty moods haha.
Again a great video guys, keep it up, would love to see you do a fuck about lets play of these bootlegs, not in the traditional sense though, just another way for me to watch content of yours if you did!
Also with that one you can plug the pads into, I'd just fucking cut that stick off, seriously, it's in the way of the screen if you're playing it that way and who needs that, looks disgusting to use man
I can't put a price on how cheap it is. But it's a little bit translucent, because it's quite thin.

Honestly this is the kind of thing you could give to a toddler just to have them amused until their old enough to actually understand them enough to realise they're crap and move them onto something more complicated. Or to just shut them up when they want to grab your good controllers you don't want thrown across a floor. For £15 i'd rather see that destroyed than an actual gameboy

Most are just a 'NES on a chip' which includes storage, so no opportunity to shove a Micro SD card full of ROMs on there. Weirdly some come with cartridges supposedly 'containing' more games, when all they do when inserted is flip a jumper setting which switches memory banks on the internal chip to access more games already stored on the chip itself.
Hmm, it's possible I know far more about these than is healthy.
