  • Everything you need to know to get started. This video covers equipment, adjustments, mixing, spraying and cleaning. I made this video because I had such a hard time finding the information I wanted to feel comfortable that I wouldn't screw up and waste money. This is an introduction, I am a novice HVLP sprayer.
The format is super simplified and broken into sections within one video.

Hey man heres a few pointers if you want better results :
    A) DONT use BRUSHING Lacquer, go to Rockler or Woodcraft and buy lacquer that can be sprayed easily and if its humid get retarder thinner, otherwise the finish WILL turn white after you spray it, or in the case of BRUSHING LACQUER the white will be trapped under the coat, and you will not get it out. (ive tried to many times) .
    B) use a smaller tip size than the harbor freight gun, It's meant to be for automotive paint which is a LOT thicker than 50/50 lacquer.. My go too for painting high gloss guitars is a 0.8mm tip.
You get PURE ORANGE PEEL with a 1.8 or whatever the gun comes with from Harbor Freight.... the only way to avoid that is increase pressure which is an overspray generator and an energy consumer...., and youll definately want a respirator for that....

I just seen this video and read you comment. Where do you get a 0.8mm tip for the HF gun? I have the same sprayer and would like to start spraying. Thanks, Gary

    Hello Keith
I as rule don't normally comment on videos and such, but just wanted to give you a heart felt thank you for posting this video, your "Guy out in the garage" view point and explanations are a very refreshing and very welcome after the usual "armchair experts" that frequent You Tube with their "I'm a expert and only my opinion counts" I have been finishing guitars for about ten years using prepackaged nitro lacquer in rattle cans and that has been fine over the years, but have been wanting to move up to a HLVP system, your straight forward explanations and demo have given me the push I needed to go invest in a similar system, will probably do the Harbor Freight route as well ( I can just hear the trolls ) I watch my money and don't blow it on other peoples expert opinions, what you are using will fit my needs just fine, thank you again for posting this,it's much appreciated............Steve

Thanks for the video, one of the things I've learned is to set the regulator psi with the trigger pulled. That will give you an accurate psi reading of the paint coming out.

One of the best videos I've ever seen. Some people complain it's too long but it's like a real lesson so of course it's long. If you have no idea what your doing, this video is amazing. You literally answered every question like "Can you leave the gun with lacquer in it" no one answers this anywhere. Keep it up.

Good evening, from UK, I have to be honest with you. I am clueless on spray guns, as a hobby i make verneer boxes, and have always used shellac by hand. However, I like you was frustrated by seeing videos that were just not helping me to choose the right equipment . After seeing your video , you have made my choice easy. Good video probably should use a mask those vapors will mess ur lungs up. Living in so cal I sure miss deft brushing laquer loved that stuff . I def wouldn’t leave the material in the gun once they plug it’s a pain. A lot of time I store thinner in the cup and put the tip in there also . Last tip would be use sanding sealer before the gloss sand it in between coats nice glass like finish . Usually the first few coats raise the grain and sanding sealer sands wayyy easier than the gloss . 👍🏻 great video

Sorry cant be on board with this video for multiple reasons, I sprayed for 20 years straight as a Pro and now have started again for my new love woodworking. I would love to feel and look at your work up close based on the vid my guess is your version of "looks awesome finishes great" are not the same as mine. Now on to the positive I like you took it upon yourself to take up spraying, my advice is to put more effort into learning more best pratices and be more technical as you want your finish to be predictable and repeatable at a high level.

    • @viewer844
      @viewer844 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Renob Tankit Thanks for your comments. With all sincerity, can you point us beginners to a better video (one of yours perhaps) where we can learn this stuff? I'm 100% with Keith - you can get little bits and pieces of some of this on various videos, but not all of it in one place. In particular, how many coats are needed? How long between coats? Do I need to clean between coats? How high should the pressure be? What tip do I use for lacquer? For latex? For poly? For varnish? Can I spray lacquer over oils-based stain? Over water based stain? Over shellac? Do I need to thin the lacquer? How much? I could probably come up with 10-15 more questions. I can't find a book on this anywhere.

Keith's Woodwork Hi just a couple advices, 1- you should put sanding sealer first then sand it down with a fine sandpaper
2- adjust the pressure with the trigger pulled all the way
3- and most important, that harbor freight gun is going to get all rusted in the inside. You can go to Home Depot and get yourself a husky spray gun that is going to last way longer and do a way better job for only about $49.00.
      I hope this helps. Cheers...

Great simple video but dude, if your spraying lacquer you gotta use a carbon filter mask. Those fumes will get you over the years. Gotta give credit for the attempt but man, this was painful to watch.
    1. Buy Lacquer designed for spraying.
    2. Adjust your pressure when the air is flowing through the gun.
    3. Put a moisture filter ON the gun.
    4. ALWAYS wear proper PPE with Lacquer.
    5. Don’t use a container with a different label. Have some empty, unlabeled containers on hand and label them with the product and rations and mix date.
    6. Never leave product in your gun. Clean it properly after each days use. A little thinner is ok but not mixed.
    7. READ THE LABELS. Brushing lacquer specifically says not to be sprayed. And make sure you dilute with the correct product per the label. Some say lacquer thinner, some say MEK or MAK. READ THE LABELS or PDS.

Do not spray a spray gun in to your hand regardless if there is paint in it or not! Please use a respirator if you are spraying paint thinner or any other poison. Christ
