Great video! Very informative, thank you. Trying to diagnose mine at the moment, think I have a bad heat exchanger. Thought about bypassing it as the main reason they did that was for boats in salt water and not fresh water.
I agree with everything you've said. Mine is 35 years old and still reliable. I too get the contrary opinion, my response is that it is 35 years old. I did switch over to an alternator.
I have a 3.7L Alpha One. Very similar. I rebuilt it a couple years ago and did end up replacing the seals on the water pump. It was leaking water into the oil and I didn't know because the weep hole was clogged. Check your video because antifreeze just started leaking from the riser
I got a free boat with one of these, it was sitting with water in the hull up to just under the fuel pump for who knows how long. It turns over freely (after replacing the oil and soaking the cylinders with WD40, before even attempting it), and it's good to see there's still some people working on these. It's going to be a project, seems even simple rebuild kits are getting difficult to find... anyone have any good sources? Especially for the starter motor (the brush springs on mine rotted out, and the brush holder seen better days... the rest of it works though)
I have the same engine in my 86 Larson, changing the metal original gasket this year, wondering if you know the part number for the rubber bellow coming of the riser and if there is a flaper valve in there too. Thanks Gary from Ohio
You need to do a timing cover/water pump seal kit. Its a big job- there is a seal with two lips that keeps the coolant flowing from the water pump out of the timing assy. Better that it leaked out instead of into the oil. This is a known problem and there are other videos online about it. USE THE MERCRUSER OR SIERRA KIT ONLY!!!! No china stuff or you will cry when it fails again!! Good luck-Kirk
Anybody got an oil filter # on this engine online keeps sending me a quicksilver gm oil filter and these blocks were ford . Any help i would appreciate it
I have the same engine N my 23 foot sport craft they are junk Mercury only made them a couple of years because they are junk I have the 190 horsepower with the 4 barrel They are constantly leaking and blowing gaskets
I have the same engine and my 23 foot sport craft It is the 190 horsepower with a 4 barrel it's the biggest piece of junk Mercury has ever built they only built them for a few years because they are JUNK

I recently acquired this motor, think I don’t have spark. Turns over freely.
Feel free to make many more videos about this motor!😅
You figure it out
Best way to check spark is to plug in & ground it out then turn the key. If you get shocked you have spark. Lol

Oh why riser only have 1 slot in it. But manifold gasket has 2 slots in it. Do you goop the hole so water don’t site in the one pocket.

This company is very good- use their lookup: www.wholesalemarine.com/
Where do you get parts for this engine? Looking to replace a couple gaskets on mine.

What does it mean when your leaking coolant out a small pin hole under the water pump circulator casing ?

What's the difference between a 470 and a 170?
Same motor, 470 name came around because it’s a 4cylinder that’s 170 hp hence 470
Anyone know where I can get a new distributor? Haven’t been able to find one for sell
Look for a good used one from the Great Lakes area- no salt corrosion.
Anybody got an oil filter # on this engine online keeps sending me a quicksilver gm oil filter and these blocks were ford . Any help i would appreciate it
Does 470 have fixed orfice system
It uses a Thermostat- its a closed cooling system
Need ur help
Is this for sale
No- keeping it for now...it runs too good!
I have the 165 and runs like a sewing machine.
