Did mine last week. I needed to use the Reddi Sleeves on the cam shaft. I thought to install the sleeves using the groves worn into the camshaft as a reference point but I measured the original cover gasket at .060 in. My replacement gasket (Sierra) is thinner at .030 inch. The sleeves are not very wide leaving not much room for error. I installed the sleeves .030 in. more inward to compensate for the thinner cover gasket. I used a straight razor to carefully cut the adhesive between the top of the oil pan gasket and cover. Once cut the cover was removed with zero damage to the gasket. She has about 12 hours run time with no issues. Took my time, used the correct tools and used a little common sense. Thanks for the video it helped this job go smooth and easy.

For anyone watching this good, useful video, do not install the harmonic balancer like he did in the video using the large center bolt to pull it in. There is a harmonic balancer installer tool that keeps the threads in the crankshaft from possibly getting damaged. Rent or buy the correct tool. Also be sure to check the surface of the camshaft that the two seals ride on. Many times the camshaft is worn out and the new seals may also leak. A speedi sleeve slid over the cam will fix this surface like new.
    Otherwise good video Wayne!!

Thank's for the video, I was told you have to take the engine out to fix this. So many scammers out there in the boat repair. That's why they call it bust out another $1000. Again my local marine shop in Kokomo In. Told me to buy a rebuilt engine and let him Install $2000 and what ever it might also need. That's after he let it set for a month filled with water a ruin my brand new cover, never look at it. I had to stop and ask what's up! My boat filled with water, you need a new engine. Lol I fixed it myself, after watching you rebuild yours. Thanks for taking the time to shows us how to fix the water pump on a closed system. 5 stars rating . Runs great now! P.S don't get your boat fixed in Kokomo IN

It took 2 hours to break down and 2 hours to put back cost $60 for the gasket kit and seals. Rented puller for free to pull harmonic balancer off, the gasket on oil pan was like new. Easy job. So get out there and fix your boat!

The engine only needs to be removed if there isn't sufficient clearance (about a foot or so) in front of the motor for a harmonic balancer puller, as is sometimes the case in larger boats with engine compartments

Wayne I had to do that Job over again!. I started to see vapor like anti-freeze coming out of oil tube next to carburetor. The inner seal went bad due to me being in a hurry and not cleaning off that shaft, after cleaning off the shaft this time it had pits in it were the seal was. Use JB weld and sanded it down going try it again . PS don't put grease in the seals you clog your weep hole and it won't drain. So you know that a seal is bad. If it weren't for you I still be in the yard instead of the Lake. Thanks again for the Video!!!

i had to redo the seal again also. I took emery-cloth and sanded down all the pitting were the seals road on the cam shaft. put it back together and now it works great!

I was thinking about filling the grooves/pits in the cam snout with jb weld and sanding it all super smooth instead of trying to mess with speedi-sleeves. I need to do mine. My boat has been in storage for the past 3 years because it's leaking out of the weep hole. I might have to cut a notch in the floor to be able to get a puller on the balancer. Was wondering if it could be done with the front engine mount still attached and glad to see it can. I was going to use my engine hoist to hang the engine and remove the front mount assembly but I will try without it now. I have the seals and gaskets, just need to find the time to mess with it. Spring is here but we got snow again in Utah. Hopefully soon I can fix it so we can hit the lake this year.

Hello! I have a mercruiser 3.7 - 170 hp. exactly the same type as yours. I just bought this. Now I have discovered a problem. the starter couldn't pull the engine around, so I dismantled it. I have mounted a large iron on the stator, but I cannot move it either to the left or to the right, it does not move at all. Do you have any tips on what could be wrong?

I’m just getting ready to replace the seals in my water pump. My question is it necessary to remove the timing cover if I can remove the back seal with the back cover in place?

Curious as to where I should start. I have coolant in my oil. Should I be checking the water pump or head gasket first? Also curious as to if you flush the engine or just do multiple oil changes?

i would start with a compression test first.

What was the product you applied at the bottom of the block where the oil pan meets the block? I read that you need to use a thin razor along that edge when removing the cover assembly so you don’t ruin the cork oil pan gasket. Did you have any trouble with that seal/gasket after you put it all back together? Also did you need to jack up the engine at all or mess with the engine mount in the front when disassembling?

Do you have diagram for this engine. Looming for the end cap that’s bolted on the long black cylinder mine is bent

the long black cylinder must be the heat exchange unit. look up parts for a mercruiser heat exchange.

Do you know how to remove the stator because I can't get it off and I don't know how to do it without breaking anything.

    • @crazymc3909
      @crazymc3909 4 ปีที่แล้ว

You will need a pulley to remove it and a impact driver. That’s why the holes are there for the pulley to be able to remove the stator without a pulley your basically stuck for ever

just use a traditional puller with bolts they’re sold at most auto parts stores and then there’s 3 threaded holes you screw into then use a impact gun with a 19mm to pull it out
