    Please note: obviously in real life you can't hear the electric whine as loud and clear as in this video. In my RAWs there's barely any wind noise which you normally hear when riding a bike. Don't forget that. The sound experience on these electric bikes is more or less pleasant actually.

      The whine is quiet enough that you don’t notice but other people do. You can hear blinkers going off, the tires hitting rocks, and leaves crumpling.

      The regen has the same effect and depending on your mode (you can set up custom power, torque, regen off brake, regen on brake), you never need to actually hit the brakes. The stock "custom" mode is called "Canyon" so you can visualize how that might be set up with max regen. Once you get used to it, the back and forth throttle/brake/throttle become annoying. :-)

    Had a go on one of these yesterday at a Zero demo day, honestly it was a revelation. I'm not a sporty rider, I mostly enjoy bikes for the sensation of flying along and the engine/gearbox etc are just in service to that experience. This bike is so effortless and smooth, they did a really good job with the aerodynamics of the screen etc, no buffetting. I'd totally have one if they cost the same as a Ninja 1000SX/GSXS1000GT.

    As a person who really enjoys rowing the gears in a car and some spirited driving now and again, I'll say my electric car (which I bought as an appliance) is entertaining in a very different way. It's really cool to never be in the wrong gear and always have the power band at your disposal, and it's really cool to have the accelerator act like a brake when letting off. Handling is pretty good too with all the battery weight down low. It's very different from a Miata, and not nearly as much fun, but definitely fun in it's own way.

    We had an Electric Harley come to our Bike Mayhem event at the Drag Strip I'm part of the Team at. Yes it was fast-ish against another Harley. I feel like I've never been all that impressed by the Zero's (SR/F, SR/S) performance. Sure the roll on power feels pretty strong compared to an ICE bike cruising in high gear, but in a flat out acceleration the Zero's have always felt underwhelming compared to what people claim about "EV ACCELERATION". The 0-60 acceleration feels even more underwhelming which is a shame because theoretically the EV powertrain should do well off the line (the Livewire crushes the Zero in this respect). For me it's just hard to justify middleweight performance figures for Streetfighter V4 money, especially when combined with all the other huge deficiencies that the Zero's have. It's also hard to justify a Zero SR/F/S over a Livewire or Energica, which are better in basically all aspects.

    • @Schaaf
      @Schaaf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I also enjoyed the Livewire more actually

    • @PartikleVT
      @PartikleVT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Top end power really benefits from light weight. Narrower power band becomes more accesible and there less need for torque. EV's strength is the the instant torque and lack of powerband so in a motorcycle application that strength is kind of wasted and not much is gained in return. For a motorcycle you want your power to be as dense as possible, and currently I think ICE does that better. In heavy weight applications like cars EV's are easily superior because torque is a big factor.

    • @RaceWithTime
      @RaceWithTime 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caspianprince isn’t a Zero SR/F/S spec’d with 12kw charging more expensive than both the Energica and Livewire? Sure the max AC charge rate might be better but it’s still half that of the other’s DC charging and at least in the US it seems more likely to find level 3 charging than a level 2 that can supply 12kw. If I’m charging at home I don’t really care about the AC charge rate and if I’m on the road I’d only ever consider a DC station. The weight advantage of the Zero doesn’t seem to translate into better performance or handling but I guess it’s probably easier to push around the garage.

    • @caspianprince
      @caspianprince 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RaceWithTime here in Blighty there are 22kW chargers everywhere interesting, and DCFC generally only in boring places like motorway service stations and supermarket car parks. I got my Zero as an ex demo for about £2k off a new one, in 2020, when they were somewhat cheaper in general - total cost was about £7k cheaper than the cheapest Energica. When I test rode an Energica it broke down, and was so heavy I could barely move it, whereas the Zero is just "normal bike weight". And the Harley I didn't even try to get excited about as it was so far out of my budget I'd never ever be able to afford one.

    Dear Schaaf and All, as someone born in '81 and being a motorcycle technician I can state 3 things:
    #1 for commuting: electrocity for sure, that's the future
    #2 for fun: almost any internal combustion engine bike :)
    You just can't compare how much you're involved in the process. If you have any doubts just see David vs. Goliath (cb 500 vs zx10?) from Schaaf himself. You'll see what I mean.
    #3 Of course I know that ours is the last generation to feel like that, I'm fully aware that I'm a dinosaur who will be extinct in a blink of an eye.
    PS.: #1 yes, I do have experience with electric bikes, I'm also a test rider at my company
    #2 God bless you all (owner of a '89 transalp)

    I really look forward to when these bikes will be more common along with much more frequent charging stations, bigger range and faster charging speeds. It's okay to wait for your car like 30 minutes to charge up, but when I'm out on my bike, I just want to ride and not wait like hour and half for my bike to charge up, I usually got no time to waste lol. I'm guessing the ride is very very smooth because there isn't any engine vibration, depends on the surface of course, so that's a big plus for long distances.

    It's much noisier than I expected, I suppose I will hear stronger wind blowing covering engine sound.
    It's so linear the output you got the impression of a smooth driving but then big surprise: breaking are powerful and prolonged so you were fast. Much superior to Honda's DCT gear changes are impercettibile, best quickshifter ever made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I know police in the States use this bikes, so is really surprising the heating problem, pursuits ends after 2 minutes?!
    Range: it's a city motorbike so no reason to choose a sporty bike.
    That immediate power lure me to much I would lose my license as fast as I find a cop.

    It is legit for commuting or a short ride in the afternoon. When i would start offroad I would take an electric too...
    But for touring the technology is not viable at the moment. Also when you think of the harley ride recently ... can you imagine to cruise on a electric one? Sure, but is it desiraable - i am not so sure.
    Where is the rev matching? ;)
    Hmm and the heat warning, now imagine how much fun you would have at 30°C ...

    das mag jetzt doof klingen, aber für jemanden der mit nem Bike im Berufsverkehr pendelt stell ich mir das irgendwie schon geil vor. Kein V2 oder R4 Motor der einem die Eier wegkocht im Stop&Go Verkehr, kein Lärm der einem eh nur Ärger macht, an der Ampel einfach wegballern und wenn man dann doch mal bock auf Landstraße nach der Arbeit hat hat man trotzdem 2-Rad Feeling. Irgendwie geil.
