Please note: obviously in real life you can't hear the electric whine as loud and clear as in this video. In my RAWs there's barely any wind noise which you normally hear when riding a bike. Don't forget that. The sound experience on these electric bikes is more or less pleasant actually.
fun fact, it might depend on person hearing abilities :D
Did you feel like not having an engine sound made you go faster without noticing speed, and therefore a more risky riding experience?
The whine is quiet enough that you don’t notice but other people do. You can hear blinkers going off, the tires hitting rocks, and leaves crumpling.
@@CorsairMaverick i got the very same question, also.. i'm really concerned about new bikers that are gonna start off with a electric bike. That feeling like tesla owners, you know? "Oh I got an electric vehicle that zooooooom from 0 to a wall in 2 seconds... " maybe i'm wrong...
By the way. It's gonna take a long long time before somebody convince me that this kinda things move my soul more then my 749 full termignoni :D
@@gc2512 would be great to get a feedback from Schaaaf but my thinking was exactly the same as yours!
Smart, it redirects power to the motor by disabling the speedometer when you hammer on!! Very useful!
Its the rider blurring the speed if you were being serious
"REROUTE ALL POWER TO THE ENGINE BAY"
*spooling noise intensifies*
🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍
@@babayaga2841 erm... awkward.... actually Zero patented the "Range Saver" feature on these bikes so when a rider is pushing the motor hard, the computer compensates by disabling all other unnecessary battery drain, like the dash.
Tehehehe
Nice...sounds like my washing machine on spin dry
Tehehe
Hahaha this is so accurate! :D
While slowing down, I'm automatically expecting downshift sounds, but there are none...feels so incomplete. But great riding and content!
But it redirects kinetic energy back to battery, so you get more juice for next hard pushing!
Thanks
The regen has the same effect and depending on your mode (you can set up custom power, torque, regen off brake, regen on brake), you never need to actually hit the brakes. The stock "custom" mode is called "Canyon" so you can visualize how that might be set up with max regen. Once you get used to it, the back and forth throttle/brake/throttle become annoying. :-)
@@karlbloss Exactly.
But so happy so see people of your generation supporting new tech instead of dismissing them as they were not invented in their time.
Had a go on one of these yesterday at a Zero demo day, honestly it was a revelation. I'm not a sporty rider, I mostly enjoy bikes for the sensation of flying along and the engine/gearbox etc are just in service to that experience. This bike is so effortless and smooth, they did a really good job with the aerodynamics of the screen etc, no buffetting. I'd totally have one if they cost the same as a Ninja 1000SX/GSXS1000GT.
Awesome!
You put that so very well. I only had one demo as well, on a Victory/Brammo a rew years back. It was fun, and I'd like to try a much longer ride. That was maybe eight years ago and while in line with others waiting to try, the comments were the price, $20k, was too high. It was basically the live wire at $10k less.
Finally someone who drives the SR/S properly and shows the difference to city scooters.
Thanks
If I'm ever dying on a bike, I am dying hearing the sound of an in line four not the sound of a refrigerator
nice thought, I agree. but maybe we hear the shattering noise of our helmets hammering into the road haha. Wouldn't mind trying an electric one, expand your mind and upcoming sound modules :D
Weeeeeeeeeeooooooh. Weeeeeeeeeeooooooh. Weeeeeeeoh. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Fuck no. I want injectors or carburetors!
True!
Dude get a new refrigerator
Man child
Having this just at home charging slowly/or fast with solar power from your house and taking it out every now and then for a ride or two must be awesome! Free rides all the time.
Yup... been enjoying my 2018 Zero DRS for 4 years now. I keep it set on a Custom mode. Basically Sport mode with a stronger Regenerative braking. My commute is only a 30 mile round trip with a little Freeway driving. Great commuter bike.
Nice!
I have the same setting. Custom Sports mode with 85% regen. Works for me on SR/s 2022
As a person who really enjoys rowing the gears in a car and some spirited driving now and again, I'll say my electric car (which I bought as an appliance) is entertaining in a very different way. It's really cool to never be in the wrong gear and always have the power band at your disposal, and it's really cool to have the accelerator act like a brake when letting off. Handling is pretty good too with all the battery weight down low. It's very different from a Miata, and not nearly as much fun, but definitely fun in it's own way.
Thanks for sharing
wow!! what an honor to be first commenter on your video. Must say digging the sound on this one. 😂😂
Almost :D
After two years with my DSR I still get that TIE Fighter feeling; especially when overtaking :D
Nice!
Hah! Same. Love my little DSR, great for commuting.
i will only switch to an e-motorcycle when fuel is too expensive or normal motorbikes are completely banned.
Makes sense
@@Schaaf If normal motorbikes are banned, I won't get used to it. I will go down the streets and make a revolution with all my petrolheads friends
hope to be dead at that dark times
Like the video bro👌. Love the way your Speedo fades out at above certain speed. Mine doesn't do that😁😁
Thanks
génial !!! super vidéo avec la zero !
Merci
Do you find it hard to realize how fast you're going without looking or hearing a gas engine? Is there an adjustment period for that?
it is a bit different but you adjust to it very fast. Within an hour or two
Curious what your feelings are about the balancing point of the bike. Can't wait to see you on a Energica bike, let's see if it can manage the "Schaaf"power
It's all good
I have a Zero FX. I put 6k miles on it in 10 months. I am addicted to it like crack. I recently had to take it to shop and am going through actual withdrawals. It feels like flying a TieFighter.
I have no issues with losing the engine sound as combustion engines got us used to, but the magic of the gearbox..
That cannot be missing
There is an electric bike with gears
@@krassergamerLP i know, but most of them use direct transmission to reduce weight, since it's already heavy enough
You're right. Changing gears is simply satisfying
Why? Seems so unnecessary. If the bike was powered by a jet turbine, would you still insist on having gears if it didn't need it?
The point of a gear box is to make up for one of the ways liquid fuel vehicles are poor. This bike does a good job of demonstrating that. Smooth riding is best in all situations, and No geared bike will do it better than electric.
Hi Scaaf
How it was with the brake engine feel? does it have any? simulate setting or something?
You can adjust it manually
We had an Electric Harley come to our Bike Mayhem event at the Drag Strip I'm part of the Team at. Yes it was fast-ish against another Harley. But when it ran a pass on its own (low 11's) with no fire & brimstone sound, it was batsh!t boring. Mind you the torque of the thing tried to tear up our track prep which was interesting in its self. But I'd still prefer the sound of my '21 Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 over anything else.
Yeah, a screaming V4 or high performance twin will always sound better than the electric bike whines. Governments around the world might try and force us to go electric but I'll always have a ICE bike in my garage no matter what.
The Tuono beats basically everything 😂
@@kugangles9860 Ok boomer.
Maybe boring to watch but definitely not boring to ride! Every other Harley seems downright anti-social by comparison.
The bike even sounds different from the start of the video compared to when the warning light comes on. Sick video bro!! Btw is the power progressive or is it just boom full power right from the start till the end? BTW Love the little Leather asmr at the end hahaha
Good question. It feels there is a little progression but theoretically the torque should be max right from the go
It is very sad that Alta (e-motorcycle company) got mishandled so hard and died on a predatory takeover scheme by Harley. We could have seen a revolution in a near future or at least have some healthy competition leading to faster and better progress in the market. Ryan from F9 did a cool video on that.
This. Even if all EV suck in some way we need to pray that they are successful in some some sense so the market will invest money to develop better, lighter and more efficient tech. As we live on an Globe floating in Space, Oil will run out sooner or later and we better have supreme battery tech by then.
I'll watch that
I feel like I've never been all that impressed by the Zero's (SR/F, SR/S) performance. Sure the roll on power feels pretty strong compared to an ICE bike cruising in high gear, but in a flat out acceleration the Zero's have always felt underwhelming compared to what people claim about "EV ACCELERATION". The 0-60 acceleration feels even more underwhelming which is a shame because theoretically the EV powertrain should do well off the line (the Livewire crushes the Zero in this respect). For me it's just hard to justify middleweight performance figures for Streetfighter V4 money, especially when combined with all the other huge deficiencies that the Zero's have. It's also hard to justify a Zero SR/F/S over a Livewire or Energica, which are better in basically all aspects.
I also enjoyed the Livewire more actually
Top end power really benefits from light weight. Narrower power band becomes more accesible and there less need for torque. EV's strength is the the instant torque and lack of powerband so in a motorcycle application that strength is kind of wasted and not much is gained in return. For a motorcycle you want your power to be as dense as possible, and currently I think ICE does that better. In heavy weight applications like cars EV's are easily superior because torque is a big factor.
...except price, weight, and 12kW AC charging, which were the three things that decided it for me!
@@caspianprince isn’t a Zero SR/F/S spec’d with 12kw charging more expensive than both the Energica and Livewire? Sure the max AC charge rate might be better but it’s still half that of the other’s DC charging and at least in the US it seems more likely to find level 3 charging than a level 2 that can supply 12kw. If I’m charging at home I don’t really care about the AC charge rate and if I’m on the road I’d only ever consider a DC station. The weight advantage of the Zero doesn’t seem to translate into better performance or handling but I guess it’s probably easier to push around the garage.
@@RaceWithTime here in Blighty there are 22kW chargers everywhere interesting, and DCFC generally only in boring places like motorway service stations and supermarket car parks. I got my Zero as an ex demo for about £2k off a new one, in 2020, when they were somewhat cheaper in general - total cost was about £7k cheaper than the cheapest Energica. When I test rode an Energica it broke down, and was so heavy I could barely move it, whereas the Zero is just "normal bike weight". And the Harley I didn't even try to get excited about as it was so far out of my budget I'd never ever be able to afford one.
Awesome video!
How does the engine brake feel with these? I've readed that there's a "regenerative braking" setting that changes depending on riding mode.
Thanks! Yes you can manually set the level of engine braking which indeed is the recuperation
Man that's some great riding Schaaf, bautiful video as always!
I was at a Moto Expo recently where Zero had a booth, since then I've been wondering how do these electric bikes actually feel to ride compared to the ICE motorcycles? What's the feeling when you roll the throttle back, is it choppy, as it doesn't look like that in the video?
Thank you for the beautiful content, it's a breath of fresh air in our current times!
It's as smooth as it can be
It's not choppy at all. They just pull and keep on pulling until they top out. Smooth as butter. Very easy to Speed on too, I catch myself having to check the Speedo more often than I do on my CBR600(which I only ride for fun). My Zero is for commuting and I have to say, 1st thing in the morning, the silence is great. No loud race pipe pissing off my neighbors.
Within two seconds I was reminded of the Jetsons lol. Great ride
Hehe thanks
How does it feel when decelerating? Is there any engine brake sensation? Or was it just a pure braking system that slowing it down?
It has adjustable recuperation
Regenerative braking. You can adjust it to your liking. Can get it so high the rear tire will want to skid as it unloads under deceleration. Would not recommend, I found that out the hard way. 😁
Thank you for giving me a reason to stay away from electric motorcycles. Nope!
Welcome!
Good review and video. I would just agree with a lot of people the range is to short to make these bikes viable.
Thanks
I was waiting for a take off 😁
:D
Algorithmus Moin aus Hamburg, bei dem Sound kommen Erinnerungen in mir auf . Vor vielen Jahren arbeitete ich in einer Fabrik und bin oft Gabelstapler gefahren , ... ach ja *DAMALS* . 🤓
Hahaha herrlich, danke
Klaus, bist du es? 😂
is the sound coming from a speaker or created by motor
That's the mechanical sound of the bike, nothing fake.
Literally sounds like a commercial plane about to take off. Insane
I rode one of the dirtbike style of this bike the other day doing a state inspection- man that thing was fuckin fast. I have owned a couple of big I4 bikes before, and the zero felt every bit as fast as anything I’ve ever ridden.
Hallo hätte mal ne frage. Cb 500.
NGL, I HATE IT. They will never become the future of motorcycling unless gasoline engines are outlawed. We all know that part of the visceral experience of motorcycling is hearing that engine roar and feeling that rumble. No way on this earth I would EVER buy an electric bike, period. (same goes for my car, btw)
Still, thanks for the video.
In my mind electric bikes make the most sense as city commuters. That's pretty much it.
Yup, I also think so far they're only good for short commutes
Commuting on a bike? Cold in winter. Wet when raining. You have to change your attire for work especially in spring with all insects flying into you. For commuting buy a scooter instead which provides more shielding and storage or go by bus/car/train.
I tend to judge my speed going in to medium speed corners by what gear I'm in - is this difficult to judge with an electric bike?
Since I judge my speed mostly through my actual speed I didn't feel a difference
No different that a Gas powered bike. Been riding both now for 4 years. Gas powered for 30+. You judge it by speed and feel. You may think you're judging it by gear but that's a placebo effect. All that's telling you is what part of the power band you're in and how much power you have left on tap.
@@Schaaf lol 🤣🤣🤣
I got to ride a zero a few years back. My ride normally an r series, although I drive a leaf to work because it is cheap. My impressions were that it accelerated in a way I was not expecting, but after jumping off it left me feeling, well a little empty. Would I buy one? Yup, because it would allow me to ride everyday, but gonna miss internal combustion, even though it really is frankly flawed.
Thanks for sharing!
Omg i would love to ride one of those. Electric power delivery is so much nicer in cars.
Yea
How’s the acceleration comparing with the Kawasaki Z H2?
The Z H2 pulls a lot harder
Love from mizoram
Thanks
Hey schaaf, can you drive the New Moto Morini x-cape 649?
unfortunately not th-cam.com/video/A_lVU5NGIUY/w-d-xo.html
Imagine riding for three hours and listening to this mosquito sound
The battery won't last that long lol
damn, it would be hard for me to ride in the twisties because of lack of the sound, but its great anyways, and great vid ;)
Thanks
How cool would it be if they added some element to filter the air and produce a more interesting sound, like the sound of the star wars 74-z bikes..., right?
Pew pew pew
please do a review on the verge hubless electric bike as well
th-cam.com/video/A_lVU5NGIUY/w-d-xo.html
Dear Schaaf and All, as someone born in '81 and being a motorcycle technician I can state 3 things:
#1 for commuting: electrocity for sure, that's the future
#2 for fun: almost any internal combustion engine bike :)
You just can't compare how much you're involved in the process. If you have any doubts just see David vs. Goliath (cb 500 vs zx10?) from Schaaf himself. You'll see what I mean.
#3 Of course I know that ours is the last generation to feel like that, I'm fully aware that I'm a dinosaur who will be extinct in a blink of an eye.
PS.: #1 yes, I do have experience with electric bikes, I'm also a test rider at my company
#2 God bless you all (owner of a '89 transalp)
Thanks
@02:17: That moment in this silent new world, where everything is different - but in the end is still the same. Bikes and cars.
Yea
It's like flying
It is the future right here.
probably
It's now.. You can buy it 👍🏻
Damn, if the drivetrain overheats that quickly then that's a no go for the summers out here in the southwestern US. I'd melt that motor in one canyon run when the temps can get 100+.
Indeed
Uau! It looks cool to ride!
Thanks
Screw that i love shifting up and down RIDE CLUTCH!!
Cool
It looks like a nice ride, but I personally need the explosions.
Same
Did you miss the vibration between the legs ?
Nope
i will never buy a electric mike if i don t have too.. but videos like that put my heartrate and bloodpreasure at ease when i look at future EU laws
Good!
How did you make it go over 124 mp
lol
Nice
I mean I’m not a huge electric fan but HOT DAMN THIS THING CAN SURE GO
it does!
WOOOAH !!!
Thanks
No matter how fast is the electric bike but the gear changing petrol bikes are 🔥🔥🔥
True
I really look forward to when these bikes will be more common along with much more frequent charging stations, bigger range and faster charging speeds. It's okay to wait for your car like 30 minutes to charge up, but when I'm out on my bike, I just want to ride and not wait like hour and half for my bike to charge up, I usually got no time to waste lol. I'm guessing the ride is very very smooth because there isn't any engine vibration, depends on the surface of course, so that's a big plus for long distances.
Indeed
Why you has blurred the screen panel?
Keyboard warriors
I think they sound better in person but maybe thats from the helmet muffling the higher pitched tones. They seem to sound a bit deeper and throatier when youre the one riding if that makes sense.
Not really but thanks for sharing
It's much noisier than I expected, I suppose I will hear stronger wind blowing covering engine sound.
It's so linear the output you got the impression of a smooth driving but then big surprise: breaking are powerful and prolonged so you were fast. Much superior to Honda's DCT gear changes are impercettibile, best quickshifter ever made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know police in the States use this bikes, so is really surprising the heating problem, pursuits ends after 2 minutes?!
Range: it's a city motorbike so no reason to choose a sporty bike.
That immediate power lure me to much I would lose my license as fast as I find a cop.
Liked this clip!
Bye
Freedom everyone
P.s.: hope you got the joke

Ok
I laughed at 4:20 when you met a Tesla haha :D
the Tesla 3 overtaken at 2:19 😉

The Verge motorcycle might offer solutions to the range and temperature problems at the cost of more unsprung mass at the rear! I hope you get to ride it one day :)
Cool
Please stop! You're spending my money. This is too cool.
Is it in miles or kilometres
Km
I have to admit, I simply love those electric bikes. I have been cjty commuting on electric maxi scooter (china) for 9 years. Last week test ride Energica EVA RS (there is video on my channel). On standing you can feel the weight, but once it starts moving.....it crazy. All that torque and recuperating power......i love it!
Ride safe Schaaf 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Nice!
These bikes having a 80 mile range battery that takes 4 hours to charge is definitely not the future.
Thanks
❤
Thanks
It is legit for commuting or a short ride in the afternoon. When i would start offroad I would take an electric too...
But for touring the technology is not viable at the moment. Also when you think of the harley ride recently ... can you imagine to cruise on a electric one? Sure, but is it desiraable - i am not so sure.
Where is the rev matching? ;)
Hmm and the heat warning, now imagine how much fun you would have at 30°C ...
You're right about that. Especially cruising would be no real fun with an electric
Is it cross 200+

that sound is ridiculous lol.

One thing i will like about electric bike is no vibration at all 4 cylinder smoothness dominance will end here
I love electric bikes and their sound, you should do more videos with electric bikes, i advise you the energica ego or eva ribelle
I unfortunately don't get Energicas
Are you in mph?
No
Schööfl, dain freund hot die richtige, die Duke III. 😂
stimmt :D
It's definately an experience i can't wait to have. The technology is not quite there i guess but i'm looking forward to what the future brings.

So basically it’s like a fast gearless scooter.
Nah it rides like a motorcycle
It sounds like an ambulance going very fast.
Sounds like crap.
Hahaha
Can you do wheelie on that bike?
Yes
你是技術,任何车你都能玩出如此
Ok
I like it very much (SR-F). But for me and the other traffic 80-100km/h is fast enough on this kind of public roads 😉⚡🏍
Thanks
Oh no,... we're reaching electric bikes as well..
please, dont let ICE Die! even hydrogen power is a good option, we like vehicles because of the noise they made :(
great video, nonetheless!
Thanks
When there is 300 kms of autonomy and à price < 15 000 €, i’ll go for it.
Same
It hasn't the front brake on the bar or I can't see 🤔
It definitely has
You don't use much and confuse me..haha
This is something I could live with. Really great fun bike or seems to me.
I would use it as a tool more than a toy. It could save me a bunch on fuel.
Yup
Irgendwie geil.
Völlig richtig. In der Stadt macht das durchaus Sinn!
