Three, two, one. The president is live, announcing to 100 million Americans that there are nuclear weapons in Cuba. This episode brought to you by DomiNations! smarturl.it/CubanMissile1
And one of many phrases generated by the specter of nuclear Armageddon. Which is still not far off, if rational minds like those at work in CMC are push aside.

I thought i understood the CMC from school in Canada, but these videos paint so much of a clearer picture. Thank you for making education engaging, memorable and free.
I never thought about the fact that the Cuban Missile Crisis (or even the details of the Cold War in general) would be taught in Canada. I get the feeling it was more like the teacher telling his students how two nations almost dropped the biggest ball of all.
Who knew that there were actually shots fired during the Cuban Missile Crisis? I honestly had no idea! I thought that it was purely a bunch of military posturing and backroom deals! Better tune in next week to see how it all unfolds.
We came even closer when a Russian satellite detected US missiles on their way to Moscow. Literally every green light went off to return fire, but the Russian who was suppose to actually push the button thought it was odd that the USA would launch missiles without any kind of provocation, fully knowing that Russia could easily return fire. And he successfully predicted that the USA hadn't launched missiles. Turned out there was just an electronics malfunction, which was promptly fixed.
This incident wasn't a lifetime ago though, it was only 56 years ago. That's what is really unsettling about it. As now we are approaching a similar scenario, one once thought vanquished. Yet here we are again at two minutes to midnight.
This is the Cold War, rhetoric is the way it work. Back then, Osama Bin Laden is still look upon as a "moderate rebel" by the West so don't bother. In case you want to know more , check out US praises of Vietnam Ngo Dinh Diem and South Korea Syngman Rhee, enough rhetoric for the whole Free World :)

Every time I rewatch this series, I can’t find a more perfect distillation of the lunacy of the time as the line “this isn’t whack-a-mole, it’s sign-language with destroyers”.
Yep and that one beat could have potentially destroyed the world as we know it today. A cat’s curiosity may have killed itself but a bear’s curiosity apparently means the death of much of the world.
Nathan Gatten the media basically fucked the influence of the US folk in the Vietnam War after the Tet Offensive, even though the american marines and the south vietnamese soldiers repelled it, of course, they had heavy casualties in infraestructure and lives... I sometimes wonder if that media could have been able to report during the WW2 in any front, the outcome would have changed in any way, like making gory descriptions of the battles or reporting rumors back home when information was harder to verify...

TheSilverSky91 yeah, I think the same, but just thinking how things could have changed if the media could have had access to certain info, like the hundreds of bodies spread of american, brittish and soviet soldiers in all fronts and the impact in those at home expecting their soldiers to come back from their fronts

Fun historical fact: At the same time JFK went live, announcing the missile crisis, a satirical comedy album about kennedy and his family was being recorded in front of a live studio audience. "The First Family." The audience roared and laughed at the numerous digs at the president, unaware of the developing situation occurring right outside their studio. It's a very interesting snapshot of public sentiment of JFK and cold war relations on the day that announcement went out.

Amazing video as always! I'd love to see you guys do a series on the Habsburgs, especially Charles V and his immediate family. So much happened during his rule, such as the conquest of Mexico and much of the Americas, the fall of Hungary and the siege of Vienna, the birth of the Protestant Reformation, the Italian Wars, the rivalry between Francis I and Charles, European efforts to halt the spread of the Ottomans, etc. It would be a nice way to tie in with the Suleiman series that briefly touched on them (the Habsburgs).

Lol no, che is used in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Southern Brazil, Bolivia, Galicia and even the Falklands to varying degrees. Its origin is uncertain, as there are expressions in Guaraní, Venecian Italian and Valencian Spanish from which it could have originated. Your comment also implies Cubans were ignorant of its meaning, when in fact you are. Che loosely means friend, dude, mate, pal and is used similarly to the Venezuelan "Pana", the Colombian "Parce" or the Mexican "Güey", "cuate" or "Carnal", the Costarrican, Honduran and Salvadorian "Mae" or "Maje", the Lunfardian "Pibe", the Paraguayan "Kape" and the Cuban "Asere", and that's just scratching the surface. In short, there are variations and equivalents of Che in pretty much all of the Spanish dialects, so it's pretty outstanding to think the Cubans wouldn't have understood its meaning. The term is commonly used to refer to Argentinians around Latin America.
First of all, great video! I learn so much that I never new in these series. My dad worked in Devonport Dockyard during the crisis; when the deadline for the ships to turn around came, knowing full well that the yard would be a primary target if there was any kind of nuclear exchange, he and his colleagues went outside for a last cigarette and to look for the flash.
Also, I want to say that this series reminds me of your Seminal Tragedy series, and also the juxtaposition of the Justinian and Khazrau series. Rather than taking sides, it renders both in tragically human - and relatable - terms. Thank you for doing what you do :)
The tension, reminds me of the opening scene in war games. I remember seeing it as a child, trembling in fear as the 2 officers pull the keys that have to be turned simultaneously for millions of people to die. This is something humanity has to avoid at all costs
You know, it’s funny. I look forwards to watching these videos and have watched nearly all the extra history episodes, but in school I don’t enjoy history class at all. And I don’t think it’s the fact that i have to do worksheets and stuff. Yeah worksheets are boring but if we got to learn from videos like this and fill out worksheets after as more of a way to make us pay attention I think all history classes could be fun again. Instead of reading out of textbooks and writing endless notes we could actually want to learn about history.
Presentation is key. You can take a fantastic setting and story and make it boring as hell. Look at the 100 Year War, or the Norse civilization, or the Mongolian Empire (and what stopped them from expanding into SE Asia and Japan). All of these things are actually riveting stories and settings, but until recently there hasn't been interest in them.
This past week due to common cold..... I lied in bed most of the free time and bringe watched your channel. Now 9 out of 12 recommended vid are from EC. Really love it... keep pushing great content.
+MagnuMagnus You're apprehensive about how *which* current government is being run? The Cuban one? Or the Russian one? Personally, the current Venezuelan and Iranian governments are the ones that are scaring the shit outta me.
+Tano Strelok No, I'm not scared because I'm Columbian, but because of all the harm the Venezuelan government's policies have done to its own people. I'm not scared of the Venezuelan government, I'm scared for its citizens because of all the needless suffering the Venezuelan government has caused to the Venezuelan people. I have empathy for those poor bastards, and for what's been done to them against their will, and I'm scared it's going to get a lot worse for them before it's going to get any better.
People see the incident as look how dangerous nukes are ...but to me the nukes just saved the day ... No leader was ready to start a war .. if this was devoid of nukes I don't think the peace would have been maintained ... US would have invaded Cuba ... USSR would have invaded Berlin ... We would have been in WW2 situation all over again back in 1960's
partha sarathy not only that but because of the restraining leaders of the time. The military were absolutely primed to fight but the president’s were able to restrain them enough. Having capable leadership is just as important.
Nuclear war threat is good enough as long BOTH parts are sensible enought, to understand that Mutual assured destruction is not the way yet you only need one magalomaniac with acces to nukes to fuck this world
Nice job on the F-8 Crusaders. I really like Nick's artwork. I think you guys made a great call with the art team. I think David is better suited for the Sci-Fi stuff, while Nick is better suited for the History shows.
Love it when you guys use historical recordings, video, photographs and such. You've got a great style for your art that helps you break down and illustrate stories, but seeing a photograph or hearing a voice can be a powerful kick to the head. "That's him. That's real. This isn't just a story, it actually happened." That realization, that moment where the tangible reality of an event just slams into you, that's what I study history for.
the thing i love of this series of the misile crisis is how Thrilling yet tense they are, if it's having me at the edge of the seat, i can only imagine how stressful would be for those involved.
There are probably plenty of people here who know this, but I do see the misunderstanding all the time. The military's DEFCON status counts from 5 (normal force readiness) to 1 (maximum force readiness). I was in NORAD for 4 out of the 6 years I was in the Air Force, and I see the mistake all the time. I think even a song said "Defcon 5!" once indicating that things have gone terribly wrong. It's actually the other way around. We want to stay at 5 as long as possible, 1 means we're all dying... Since 9/11 We've been at a permanent 4...
My mother was in elementary school in Miami, Florida during this. She still remembers everything vividly. Her class would do nuclear drills by hiding under their desks.
1:50 Fun fact. That plane crashed because the pilots had so little sleep that they thought they’d take the harder, tighter approach for the runway just to test it out, as well as some confusion as to where the Cuban border was as the light used to show it wasn’t working.
Point of order: the U2 plane was hit by shrapnel, it wasn't a direct hit, as portrayed in the video. Furthermore, as I understood it, orders from Moscow were to not engage. If the Soviet general on the ground had issued different orders, I imagine he might have gotten into some hot water.
Three, two, one. The president is live, announcing to 100 million Americans that there are nuclear weapons in Cuba.

"This isn't whack-a-mole, it's sign language with destroyers"
brilliant sentence. also usable for most of military maneuvers in most crises.
I love these episodes
When he said "offensive missiles" I imagined something like missles being launched with missles dropping pamphlets that basically say "screw you!"
We can't get 5 minutes without humanity trying to destroy itself
Oh yes we can. Look at tod
NEWS: NK IS TRYING OUT NUKES
Yeah your right
If those missiles hit Washington DC, humanity would have a chance of getting restored...
Oh the irony
@@walterbrunswickDC isn't the only problem. Beijing and Moscow are part of the issue too
I love the use of actual footage of Kennedy's speech
The tension, reminds me of the opening scene in war games. I remember seeing it as a child, trembling in fear as the 2 officers pull the keys that have to be turned simultaneously for millions of people to die. This is something humanity has to avoid at all costs
this series is one of the reasons why i remember the order of events of the thirteen day crisis really vividly
3 extra history videos in a row! Is this heaven?
This past week due to common cold..... I lied in bed most of the free time and bringe watched your channel.
Now 9 out of 12 recommended vid are from EC.
Really love it... keep pushing great content.
This story is making me super tense about events that happened close to 60 years ago. Keep up the good work.
This is why diplomatic relations are so crucial, and why I'm so apprehensive about how the current government is being run.
MagnuMagnus same. Without calm and tactical leadership anything can happen.
+MagnuMagnus You're apprehensive about how *which* current government is being run? The Cuban one? Or the Russian one?
Personally, the current Venezuelan and Iranian governments are the ones that are scaring the shit outta me.
hippyjason
Current U.S.
hippyjason unless you're Colombian I don't see why would you be scared of Venezuelan regime.
Even knowing how it turned out, your presentation is managing to create tense cliffhangers. Well done.
thank god Kennedy was president during this period in history. so many other presidents would have ended the world
Even Robert Kennedy was pretty aggressive and wanted to attack Cuba.
generalnawaki. I was just thinking during the video, what a president like Trump would have done in that situation
Lol I just relised that Kennedy built a “wall” of destroyers around Cuba.
Jami Rahkonen, i dont think you would be around to ask that question if he was.
VC Donovan There's a literal Russian agent occupying the Oval Office right now! A Republican president no less. You're clueless.
I have learned SO much on this channel!
”It’s not whack-a-mole, it’s sign language with destroyers.” I think that is the greatest thing I’ve heard in a long time
"This isn't wack-a-mole, its sign language with destroyers!" Love that line.
Eeeee, this means the B-59 incident will be next episode....! :D Arkhipov saving the world with cool head in a hot sub.
I'm looking forward to it !
Hehe...Lebanon was mentioned, even if just for a second here :)
HemaG fellow Lebanese??
Michel Sfeir yep
Greece was mentioned too.
CEREAL KILLER and my US state, but apparently they couldn't take the bears.
So were the Greeks for some reason xD
This makes the CMC so much more understandable!
I know what happens, but every episode still has me on the edge of my seat watching eagerly!
7:00 - Did we seriously almost destroy ourselves over a damn bear?!
Yes, and there were other absurd close calls, though not involving bears.
This is beginning to feel strangely like the earlier "Seminal Tragedy" series. Loving it so far guys.
LEBANON!! Mom WE'RE FAMOUS
Mom get the camera!
Just 5 second ;-;
Praying for you guys rn
People see the incident as look how dangerous nukes are ...but to me the nukes just saved the day ... No leader was ready to start a war .. if this was devoid of nukes I don't think the peace would have been maintained ... US would have invaded Cuba ... USSR would have invaded Berlin ... We would have been in WW2 situation all over again back in 1960's
partha sarathy not only that but because of the restraining leaders of the time. The military were absolutely primed to fight but the president’s were able to restrain them enough. Having capable leadership is just as important.
Nukes prevent open conflict. Until they end all life on our planet.
nerfvideos96 and that's exactly why the great war happened in the first place, too many weak leaders
Nuclear war threat is good enough as long BOTH parts are sensible enought, to understand that Mutual assured destruction is not the way yet you only need one magalomaniac with acces to nukes to fuck this world
Funny how that works.
You really make this feel so intense. WHile watching, I can feel the sense of nuclear winter looming over
Nice job on the F-8 Crusaders.
It's terrifying to think something like this happened so recently.
the thing i love of this series of the misile crisis is how Thrilling yet tense they are, if it's having me at the edge of the seat, i can only imagine how stressful would be for those involved.
Since 9/11 We've been at a permanent 4...
the narration just makes the tension of the times so palpable good stuff
them cliffhangers
Considering we're all still here, this never turned into a full out war.
The King's Soldier that's funny
Ethan Republic spoiler alert
The King's Soldier jeez man, spoiler alerts
There is no Cliffhangers in history read a book about this subject or go on Wikipedia
4:05-4:20 is like... VSMR. The pictures in the rhythm they appear on the screen gives me goosebumps.
My mother was in elementary school in Miami, Florida during this. She still remembers everything vividly. Her class would do nuclear drills by hiding under their desks.
How that gonna work though
My grandpa was in that invasion force assembled. It’s crazy to think what would’ve happened if they pulled the trigger.
That was amazing animation on the Kennedy address. :D
Although I know in broad terms how this ends, I'm still on the edge of my seat with that cliffhanger!
EXTRA HISTORY; THE SPACE RACE
please oh please james
This aged well
'sign language with destroyers' is the best thing i've heard all week
As a human, I can confirm that this is something that we would do.
Subscribed after finding the 1st video of this series. Fantastic work, very entertaining!
If my memory serves, the American UN Ambassador is former Illinois governor and 2 time Democratic Presidential candidate Adlai E Stevenson
It was indeed Stevenson.
Good work. I really love this channel.
1:50 Fun fact. That plane crashed because the pilots had so little sleep that they thought they’d take the harder, tighter approach for the runway just to test it out, as well as some confusion as to where the Cuban border was as the light used to show it wasn’t working.
ITS EXTRA HISTORY. THERE ARE no games here!
All AA missiles are like that. Planes are fragile so a direct hit is not needed.
