    Not had the Knock, but some likely lads tried my passenger door handle at about midnight when I was fast asleep right next to it!! Scared the life out of me, as it sounded like someone hammering on the door panel. I held firm and didn't move and nothing came of it. They moved on.
    Moral of the story....Always remember to lock the doors once you're in.

      You can use the seat belt as a makeshift emergency 2nd lock for over night if you're worried. There's plenty of TH-cam videos on how to do it. Or alternatively you can measure out the distance from either door and buy a chain that goes through both handles and lock it with a padlock.

    • @suedesignable
      @suedesignable ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Take your seat belts and loop them thru the door handles and then into the seat belt lock. So if someone succeeds in opening the door they won’t get it open very far and you can get moving fast.

      Keep a small axe in the car. Show it and a big smile to any f***er who tries your door. There’s no law against having an axe in your car. Legit wardens and police won’t try to get in, they’ll knock.

    Brendan there are no laws that you cannot sleep in your car in the U.K. the signs are up to discourage, just to keep the amount of people sleeping in their car to a minimum. But these signs are not legally binding. If the police knock it’s probably just to check on you as they have no jurisdiction to move you unless your car is a hazard. Wherever you can be prosecuted for no insurance or road tax means that you are entitled to park up and sleep for as long as you want. The Highway Code actually suggests a sleep after every 2 hour drive. Stand your ground if anyone tells you otherwise. No bill has ever been passed that a company (including local councils) can forbid a legal vehicle parking if they’ve paid for a ticket. Happy camping! 🤗

    • @BrendanExplores
      @BrendanExplores  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very true 👍 I've heard some horror stories though with locals smashing car windows etc... But to be fair, I'm not exactly parked outside someone's house so I should be ok. I hate seeing no overnight parking signs up, especially when the view is so beautiful. let's hope they don't bring in even stricter laws anytime soon 🤞. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment 🙂

      It’s not that there’s a law saying “Sleeping in your car is illegal”, it’s that the landowner can set the terms of the use of their land. If they put a sign up, saying “no sleeping in your car in this car park” - as long as the sign doesn’t ask you to break the law, then that’s a valid term. It’s also a valid notice for trespass purposes. It counts as having been asked to leave in uk law. So by sleeping in your car overnight in a place with signs up saying “no sleeping in your vehicle”, or “no overnight parking”, you are trespassing. It’s not a criminal affair, but it is illegal. It gives the police the power to tow your car, evict you with force etc if you meet one of the other requirements of the new bill - making a smell that someone says is offensive would be enough for example. That said, you could just drive out of the car park in the many hours it would take to organise a tow or negotiate with you to leave voluntarily before getting hands on.
      However. Do you have a knife in your car? Now it’s aggravated trespass, and this is a criminal matter. It would take a real jobsworth to want to press charges, but there are some real jobsworths out there. And the police don’t really have a choice in the matter if a complaint comes in.
      I’m not trying to put you off doing what you do, I think staying quiet was the correct thing to do and you handled it very well. I personally think you’re great, and hope you keep on doing what you do. However, don’t fall into the sovereign citizen mindset where you start to deny what you are doing and what your rights are. Understand that you are trespassing, and it is technically aggravated trespass and do not listen to anyone who tells you otherwise, sovereign citizens will be attracted to your channel like flies and if you let them, they will brainwash you into their sad little cult. If you ever find yourself disputing whether you are a person, or studying the Magna Carta and consulting with blacks law dictionary, or trying to differentiate between driving the commercial activity and captaining your road vessel along the public right of way… you need a reality check, it’s almost too late!

    You could literally be in the middle of nowhere and there's just got to be someone out there who wants to ruin your privacy. I really want to know the thought process of someone who sees someone doing everything in their power to keep to themselves, and then thinks "yea, I'm going to go annoy them".
    Assuming it wasn't the ranger. Here in NZ at the very least the ranger will just leave a ticket on your window. They won't harass you while you sleep. But there's plenty of nosy c&^ts here too 😅

    Another fact, the reservoir is used to keep the river Severn topped up (along with Clywedog) because of the dry weather at the moment. Scary to get knocks, probably rangers, I would have thought they would still announce themselves though, or at least said “no camping allowed” as they left. They don’t know who is in the car though; you could be a large aggressive man for all they know, if you don’t get out they could assume your wild camping in the hills I guess, but your fabric in the windows would suggest your inside. Worst they can do is ask you to leave, even with the new law your fine if you leave. What did those signs say though? Everything is illegal these days, better to just ask for forgiveness afterwards in most cases as long as your not on a farmers drive. I think even if you asked permission to stop anywhere, it would likely be a “no” even if they didn’t mind, cos it might make others think it’s ok. The Elan Valley is a designated dark sky site and they promote doing Astro photography there, so they would expect cars left in the lay-bys into the night really I would imagine as photographers would be out until the early hours.

    Very likely to have been the local ranger doing the rounds of the car parking spots. If it was the Police they would have kept knocking and actually have identified themselves. In both cases the worst thing that can happen is being asked to move on. I've had three knocks over the years, and they've all been decent and polite (as I was to them) and just asked me to move onto another spot. I wouldn't be put off by it though, although makes you jump at the time it's not too bad :)

    Been to Lake Vyrnwy many many times. Those large picnic tables often get visited by bright orange Chaffinches which are not scared of humans. I was there with my late father once eating some sandwiches in about 2013 and about six Chaffinches just appeared on the table eating our bread. The reason you got the knock is that is a very conspicuous park up. Those picnic benches are a very popular spot. I would have parked in a more 'stealth' spot at the very far end of the lake. Also, Lake Vyrnwy is haunted. It is said that from twilight onwards the 'removed' residents of the 'drowned' village rise up out of the water. I'm guessing they are not overly fond of English 'stealth' campers too.

    Possibly the game-keeper or the owner of the land, knocked, and assumed the owner was off somewhere. This is why I only went wild camping once, in the Corbières in France. Nearly died of fright when we saw headlights coming towards us along the track. Never again. We picked a spot by a natural spring surrounded by poplars, in the middle of vineyards. I didn't sleep the entire week I was so frightened at night. I'd say, don't camp where it's not allowed. You don't want to piss off the landowners. There are plenty of people with land who let campers stay the night. That's better.

      @@BrendanExplores If you ever have the opportunity, France has a network of farms and rural properties that allow overnight camping. It's rough and ready, but authentic. Real working farms or vineyards. If you go in the autumn you can ever do the vendanges and make some money. Backbreaking work, but plenty of people meet their partners that way. Winemakers are desperate for grape harvest crews in France. The vendanges last about three weeks. I don’t think it was the police, I have knocked a few vehicles in my time and we always used to clearly state we are the police and I would turn my own torch on myself to show that. As for the second vehicle with it’s headlamps on, that has happened to us a few times. I put that down to a driver just making up their mind what to do next. Lovely walk around to the waterfall. Great drone footage of the reservoir - quite an impressive dam. Looked tasty chicken skewers. Looks like a fabulous spot you chose.
    Looked a bit spooky when the car turned up and woke you. You never know what folks are up to do you.

      @@BrendanExplores I have a Toyota Estima. It's low profile tyres, 455 watt solar panels, 5x100 amp batteries, DVD player TV, with kitchen in rear with a choice to have a double or single bed, I chose a single bed. Epever MPPT Solar charger. Single front seat drivers side. Rear left side seat is wooden as I made a fold up lounge seat. Got 2 fishing poles with sticks, lpg gas for my cook top stove, even put the solar panels on top of my car roof racks. My TV aerial rotates 360°. It's like a mini RV in it. I live in New Zealand. Even got a fridge/freezer and I use it as a footstool. I bought the car because I did not want to pay rent anymore. For the same price I just go drive somewhere and get a window with a view.

    Watching this from the passenger seat on our journey back north after the festival - so lovely meeting you. Great video mate and yes we can confirm those kettles are a bit shit 🤣 we had an orange one and the plastic nozzle where the water pours out melted and it started going all over the worktop more than in the mug. It sadly found itself a bin shaped coffin. Hope to catch up again sometime. Courts 🧡

    The knock was likely a local authority officer checking parking enforcement. If so they would take down your car ref number to see if you are a repeat offender. As they aren’t police they have no power to get you out your car but they can clamp or send a fixed penalty notice.

    My first watch of one of your videos. Great content and you look like a pro. One tip I would give is to get rid of that electric coolbox. Best thing I ever did was to buy a Yeti coolbox and I also have one from Icey-tek. They're not cheap but well worth it and a real game changer when you're off grid. They're really solid and the insulation is fantastic so they stay cool for days with no water dripping everywhere soaking your food. You wouldn't regret buying one.

      @@BrendanExplores with cool boxes, the rotomolded ones are all really good. But there is really no need to pay yeti or igloo etc prices because there are literally 5 factories in China churning them out and each factory has its own mold - you’ll start to recognise them. The cheapest of the lot is the mold with a bottle opener on two corners and you can get one in white (don’t get a dark colour, they absorb energy and heat up far more) or light brown for £70 and it will perform just as well as any of the other rotamolded coolers, including yeti. The extra cost, the extra £330 upwards is all for the brand and the fashion. They all keep your food cool just the same as each other. You’ll find plenty of tests on TH-cam saying otherwise performed by people who make their living selling coolers and plenty of tests performed by people who do not sell coolers that find them all about the same. Hmmm…
