This world famous town in the UK has been hit by a wave of negative headlines over recent years. I investigated Glastonbury, Somerset to see if this negative media attention is warranted. In this documentary we spend time with the locals of Glastonbury, the homeless encampments, residents of the caravans, the van life community, and we gain exclusive access into one of the UK's largest alternative communities inside what once was an abandoned building. This has now grown into one of the UK's most infamous alternative communities. With rural homelessness and poverty statistics in the UK currently at the highest they have ever been, with the south west of the United Kingdom being the worst affected area does this explain the huge influx of people into this small British town. How is life in this UK town, does it live up to the headlines? In this UK documentary we find out...
With alarming headlines about the area such as:
Hippies have set up shanty town next to our homes with hundreds of caravans and van lifers, its destroyed our area:

once you have a dirty hovel, with people behaving badly. you lose any respect, and any argument you may have to stay, it's a sad fact. if you have a basic home with basics the a bath, and toilet, that is kept neat, maybe a few plants, your wish to stay is much stronger and more likely to be respected.

I have worked since my eary teens and have lived a modest lifestyle, now I am slowly selling my posessions and saving every penny to buy a van. There will be many, yound and old facing the same future as me.

@@bbuzz1687I think it will become increasingly common. People who’ve been unable to purchase a house are faced with ever increasing private rents given the lack of social housing. Those rents might be just about affordable when working but aren’t affordable on a state pension. There aren’t enough smaller housing association homes on reduced rent to go around, housing benefit doesn’t cover all the costs, etc.

I live around there & cycle down kennards moor drove 3:06 into Glastonbury town, get a coffee & return home. Ive not had any trouble doing so, in fact people smile say hello most of the time.
There was one time I got a bit nervous when a scouser took interest in my bike, but nothing happened, he just gave a compliment. The UK is a dangerous place, so is anywhere really safe? Ive been attacked zero times outside caravans & about 10 times in town centres or pubs.
When I came back to the UK, a few years ago, I had to live in a caravan because it was impossible to rent anywhere, im not a criminal im just a victim of an unfair & cruel government.
I could have paid a years rent upfront no problem, but landlords do not want to know unless you have history of renting & credit rating that is impossible if you lived overseas.
Glastonbury town does have a reputation for trouble caused by homeless people, local residents have told me this, but I haven't seen anything personally.
However it also has a reputation for being very friendly & open. Something I have experienced many many times. There is an incredible vibe in the town of goodwill & humanity.
Its hard not to feel the 'magic' if you walk around & listen to people talking. People draw amazing murals on walls & in chalk in the pavements, people sing & dance in the town centre, people dress in robes, armour, sarongs. There are meditation classes & health foods. There are mystical bookshops. 95% of the shops are unbeleivable emporiums of things that will inspire your soul & lift your day. On that side, its a special spiritual place unlike anywhere I have ever seen before. Which is why I cycle there for a coffee.
I would like the local council to help make these caravan locations better & safer, perhaps with some community projects to get jobs for people & promote community spirit - if it is possible anywhere in the country it is possible in Glastonbury!

I recently moved back to the UK and was first staying in a tent, then renting a caravan, then people rented it wanted £80 for two nights, ridiculous, taking advantage of vulnerable people, I had only a bicycle to get around, street smarts and some money I managed to get an advance from the DWP and a beautiful room to rent in a beautiful city. The government paid my rent while I looked for work, they paid for me to study customer service and cyber security. The UK government is amazing. But I am sober and clean looking so its much easier for me to find a room to rent than most of these caravan dwellers.

One of the causes of homelessness in Cornwall in particular is people from the city's , London, etc, who buy property for use as holiday homes for 2 or 3 weeks of the year, this causes local property prices to skyrocket to a point where local people can't afford a home in the town where they were born where their family have lived for generations, this has been a problem for decades.

This is fundamentally what needs to change, globally - live in 1 house. Towns and parishes could set the number of dwellings that could be used for accommodation and that would be the maximum limit for that town or parish. It would reduce the need for house building significantly. Why won’t this happen? Because buying houses is a good way to hide wealth. I have friends who have been kicked out of rented property so that the owner could turn it into an Airbnb, meaning these places are empty. It’s sickening.

Of every community in the whole of Europe Christiania is my favourite. It feels like people actually get excited about where they live because the government isn’t pissing on them with building laws, they build what they want and are very happy.
Summary: rich people get jealous when poor people appear to have easier lives so they make laws to sabotage certain communities of free thinkers from growing

@@thegenius8817 it reminds me very much of the squat/traveller scene in England in the seventies and early eighties, before Thatcher and the Tories found ways to make it illegal or impossible.
If local councils don't have the funds to redevelop empty properties and are prepared to turn a blind eye to the various health and safety legislation being ignored, what harm does it do?
You can at least take people away from sleeping rough in city centres and you may just end up with vibrant, creative communities like Christiania. Either way, with the huge numbers of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees being added to those who desperately need housing, something positive has to be done to avert this crisis.

They have made useable the derelict and uncared for spaces, which is more that the council have done. It about time we started looking after our indigenous population and work together to create a better liveable space and not ‘just’ a barely survivable one. The disused area was obviously cared for by the people living there and they are enhancing that space by keeping it free from neglect.

As a resident of Glastonbury I could say a lot about this subject. We do our best to cater for the homeless community here and as far as I am aware, the new proposals from the Town Council include a new area, properly set up, for them. On the other hand, the Zag Zag building was sold to the guy who owns it for peanuts, with the proviso that it would be restored and used for ‘workshops’ and a meeting area for the Local inhabitants. It was NEVER meant to be used by the homeless community to squat in, which is basically what they are doing. We are a teeny, tiny Town and the problem has got so bad (ie, drugs, drinking, loitering, mess, disorderly conduct) that we can’t support this many van etc dwellers. Regardless of what the ‘nice’ people say, many of them are a problem.

For years I have followed the rise of homelessness in the US where sleeping in cars and recreational vehicles (RVs) seems ‘normal’.
I have long expected to find the same here in the UK but could not easily find it.
    Thanks for showing this reality.
Worse still the US has droves of people who have neither a car nor an RV, but sleep in tents along major highways.
The UK is still some way off that but from this video, we must be catching up, fast.
Apparently, homelessness is worse in the UK than in the US but we are better at covering it up, no longer.
Although cheaper than the US, council tax is a large amount of money, taken from of taxed income that drives down our quality of life in the UK.
The recent cost of living crisis has raised the cost of basic food stuffs substantially.
Apparently budget items have increased by more than branded items.
Yesterday I found Kellogg’s had reduced the amount of Corn Flakes in its 720g box to 670g but with no fall in price (shrink-flation) representing a 7% increase. Oddly the box remained the same size.
However, staples like bread, pasta and olive oil are markedly more expensive now than just two years ago.
Many have to decide whether to heat or eat.
Water bills and council tax have the highest rates of arrears in the UK.
What struck me about those living in vehicles in the US was that many had jobs.
I think this trend following will continue.
Yesterday I also saw my first zombie drug addict in the car park at IKEA, Brent Park.
Standing folded over as if about to fall but not.
Generally our government has sold Britain as a low/cost base to the international community.
We do not create enough graduate jobs and salaries are held low to make us competitive.
The cost of living here is absurd.

In the UK, an occupier may acquire 'Squatters' Rights,' or 'Adverse Possession,' after 10-12 years of continuous residence, potentially leading to long-term legal ownership. Authorities often evict individuals before they reach this threshold, thereby preventing any claim to ownership. The first eviction I became aware of occurred in the early 1980s at a farm in southeast England, where the occupants had lived for 11 years and were integrated into the local community, including schools and other social connections. Such evictions can have lasting, detrimental effects on family life, social ties, education, and employment.

There were plenty of caravans and wild dogs howling at night 25 yrs ago when I was up there often for a weekend or week in my tent. I mixed with some of the homeless, and they seemed really sweet. I know the situations changing now...there looks more caravans, and the drug and homeless issues...and mh issues... are all much worse. The govts we had ran the country down from the 70s and 80s...and friendly communities that had resources for everyone are non existent now. Public baths closing, sports facilities closing...care facilities closing...Housing issues, employment issues and so on, on the increase...then add immigration problems...the country is imploding and it's unsettling for everyone. Glastonbury itself is an unusual place...it has high spiritual energies that attracts people, unaware of its spiritual significance and meaning, although they sense something and it draws them. Then it has the music festival, and it has the Tor, the Abbey, the Wells, and other sacred places, and quite a decent size shopping centre that reflects the spiritual core of the town. It's a shame there is not the money to upgrade the caravans, and develop those buildings and sites...the people seemed respectable...but without resources, it can seem like a losing battle. Meanwhile in the northern town where I live there are plenty of empty houses.
You can buy a terraced house for £70k, a three bedroom semi for £100k and average monthly private rent is £600.
This is not only the consequences of not enough housing on a national level but also of not levelling up and regional inequality.
When towns like where I live are left behind and in the top third of most deprived towns, when they've got nothing but minimum wage, low skilled jobs nobody from outside wants to come and live here because it is not seen as a place to come to make a good life. We are also losing much of our own young as many go into further education, get professional qualifications and then subsequently have to move away to those already overrun cities like Bristol or London in search of those professional jobs they want. So our young are making the housing shortages in those more sought after locations even worse.
I think this is one reason why the plans for a new housing estate to be built on the edge of the town I live in have been kicked into the long grass. What's the point in building more houses in a place where they can't even sell the existing houses? Even though there's a massive national shortage of housing, there's no point in building new ones in northern towns like mine where nobody wants to come to live.
I believe that if the better quality, skilled jobs were spread out more evenly across the entire country then the people would naturally spread out more and the property hotspot areas such as Bristol and London could be somewhat relieved just by this better usage of the housing we already have.
It's simply crazy that we have some places where there's 60 people all fighting over one tiny flat at £3000 per month rent when in some northern towns there's entire rows of empty, boarded up houses they can't sell for any amount.

If only the council would provide legitimate areas of waste ground for the homeless, of which there are many, there wouldn't be lanes full of semi derelict caravans which I agree is a bit of an eyesore. I hear the comment that 'some people have chosen this way of life'. There really isnt an alternative for many. For instance, if you have a dog and no partner or family, you cant just jump into a house share very easily. Renting is out of the question. Perhaps the dog has issues and is 'un-rehomeable' as animal shelters are also overwhelmed and have to choose which dogs to take in... where does that leave you? Do you abandon your best friend to get into a house share or stick with him? I know what I would do.
I dont think choice is a part of this. The system is making it harder and harder for people who dont fit the mold to survive.

Although it had been sold off some time ago and i've no idea to who, it was nice to see inside the building, thank you for taking the time to be so respectful to those who've made it their home and speaking to the lovely lady living there, I really do hope they manage to continue living in their home.
The cost of living is absurd in somerset(to be fair it is everywhere) with rent sky rocketing, the 40% homeless figure isn't surprising, but is saddening, with so little well paid work in the area that allign with the rental demands (which as a single occupier would take up to 3/4 of your salary/wages) means if you're born working class here and don't move to or within commuting distance of bristol / bath you can get shafted fast.

Anyone else remember when the festival was great? It's a sham now. I knew the end was coming when Beyonce headlined years ago. That sort of music was never what Glastonbury was about and unfortunately it signalled the end of real music, the rich tapestry that represented real people's voices too. Most people can't even name a current band because music is suppressed by the record companies who opt for their paid-for, do anything for fame, bland conformists.

Joe, you are a legend for shining a different light upon situations like this. It is no surprise more and more people find themselves homeless and helpless in this country. It is their vilification that often keeps them down and unable to see hope. It seems to me that this is their only hope.
However, in a country obsessed with land ownership and possessed with a very negative view of traveling folk, I can only see this ending one way. Money is power is the sad truth and they will be forced to leave. Nobody will care that they may die on the streets just so long as they're gone.
I really hope many more people see this kind and considerate piece. You are completely none divisive and that is a precious commodity in these times.
    Much love x

This made me cry. It is 2024 and people should not have to live like this when we have a Government turfing up the greenbelt to build houses for the 'visitors' coming here on a regular basis.
Why can't our PM build proper sites with warm showers and toilets for these people to live in peace and get help instead of being moved from pillar to post.
People might say 'oh they are alcoholics or druggies' but come on, living like that would turn anyone to booze or drugs.
This could happen to any one of us, it could happen to our kids, so why can't our Government help its own but can help everyone else?

James mate, 700 people came into the country today alone. As long as there are more people coming in to the country than houses we can build, houses will always have a ridiculously high price. In addition the labour market is flooded which brings wages down! By the way were out of land for building new homes hence why they infill building in peoples gardens etc.

@@cw3728 There's a strange irony isn't there, if I was a betting man I'd say that most of the people living like this are relatively low skilled or qualified in anything marketable, and would lean towards labour and socialist ideology. Yet they seem completely incapable of making the connection between millions of low skilled foreign nationals arriving in the last few years alone, and their inability to find work and access public services, welfare or housing. Voters prove that democracy doesn't work.
