Being able to withdraw your kids from indoctrination cirriculum is also an issue. I have had to pull my kids out of a lot of days of schools because the schools do not respect parents rights to withdraw from any subject they feel is not beneficial for their child even though it's law for parents to be able to do that. Schools have weaved the indoctrination through all subjects means sometimes you just have to keep your kids home. Schools especially where I live are super political.

teachers is not a 9am - 5/6pm job with sat or any weekend work as many other jobs do way more hours including shit hours the amount of school holidays is months over year so plenty rest for teachers if get their time to check study & home work yes school attendance is 100% parents problem!!! well done , about time NZ schools great work

Quite frankly, it doesn't matter what you think are the reasons, causes or implications. Parents are legally responsible for the whereabouts of their children. If their kids are not safely getting to school in the morning, it is the parents responsibility. Oh, and it's definitely much more than just an anecdote that there are many parents in NZ who take their children out of school for 2 weeks+ just to have a holiday "while it's cheaper". You can learn a lot from a holiday, but money shouldn't be the reason to miss school.

As someone who might have kids this adds a reason not to. If a kid had high grades they should be allowed to stay home. Kids get sick, there are bullying/mental health issues etc Sure that might lift attendance but at what cost

The previous government just wanted to claim racism every time factual root causes were mentioned. If the root causes of parents and guardians who neglect their children are identified, and resources are allocated into trying to fix those issues, there is a better chance in helping that child before the damage done to them is irreversible.

I support a teacher only day as it was in the past. There's more expectancy nowadays so why not. Kids are expected at school more often, schools running from an estimate of 9 am - 3 pm weekly, and the way you've structured the work being taught and expectancy of it being done is enough. The reasons he expressed are some real reasons why kids aren't at school. Next families and students will bum out on the teacher/ principle for having to apply what the central government is expecting of them to do and next comes Oranga Tamariki. A lot of schools absent are parents taking kids out for holiday because school time you get cheaper airfare and accomendation discount etc
