    Very USEFUL! Any advice on this particular situation I have? I had a refurbished mac and i moved the "photos" app to an ultra wd hard drive. The refurbished mac stop working, so I tried to open it on my old 2011 imac, by opening the external hard-drive and clicking on "photo's library"' icon and then a pop up reads "'Unsupported Library'" The library "Photos Library" is from a newer version of Photos. Please upgrade Photos to open this library. " I did some online research and it seems it's my old imac os(osx el Capitan) 2011 that is the problem? Everything after 2011 should be fine? Your thoughts?

      Thanks for the comment! What is it that you are asking about buying? There isn't anything to buy, which is the beautiful thing with this trick. Every other solution involves some expensive wireless hard drive but this will work with any existing USB drive or stick. The only thing you might need is an OTG adapter that goes from USB C to USB A, if your drive only has a USB A connection.
      As for the drive I used in the video, it's a standard Sandisk Extreme SSD 256GB. But like I said in the video, it shouldn't matter what you use as long as it supports USB 3.0.

      Ed Andrade It wouldn’t be so bad with smaller files, but it’s a pain in the neck with big video files.
      Apple wants us to use the cloud, whether Dropbox, iCloud, or whatever. I get that rationale. But it drives me mad waiting to transfer big files over WiFi.

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thanks man! Figuring this out was as simple as starting with the knowledge that camera memory cards were readable. Then I took a memory card from a camcorder and noticed the photos were showing up, but not the videos. So I popped the SD card into my computer and analyzed the file structure of the card. I noticed the layout of the DCIM folder and nested folders and experimented with different naming structures. Then I figured out the strategy that I show in the video always gave me reliable results.

      Well that largely depends on your cameras. If they are supported cameras, you might be able to simply plug them in with a USB C to USB C cable, directly into the iPad.
      But if they aren't supported models, or dont have that functionally. Your best bet is to import the files to your computer first or use your computer to move the video files over to your SSD, following my video guide for filesystem layout and file naming. Then you should be able to just plug in your drive to your iPad and the import tab in the Photos app should appear. Hope this helps!

    Can somebody confirm can I record the video directly onto this external drive instead of internal memory? Reason of asking is that I would like to record video of my gigs which are like 4 hours long and I don't have enough of storage on my ipad to do that. Thank you

      Unfortunately the ability to write to external storage without the use of some sort of wireless network drive, isnt possible with iOS 12.

    Would this also work with my new IPad (not Pro), but if I used a USB-C to lightning adapter? That way I could go from my Sandisk Extreme SSD to the lightning connection on my IPad? My primary concern is that there may be something funky with the USB-C to lightning adapter that may cause me some issues. Thanks!

      In theory that should work, but I've never tested it myself. Provided the adapter isn't doing anything weird, it should work.

    Hi, thx for the smart trick, really loved your video! I understand I can now transfer photos and videos from my external SSD to my iPad Pro but I wonder if it works also on the other way around and if i can also transfer photos and video files from the iPad Pro to the external SSD drive, because actually I'm already able to transfer photos from my SD card to iPad Pro to use them with editing programs but after that I'd like to be able to make a backup copy of these same photo files on my external SSD HD. Thx for your time!

      Hey thanks for watching! I'm glad you found the video helpful!
      Unfortunately, there is currently no way to transfer photos, videos or any file type directly from the iPad to an external storage device. That still requires either a computer or uploading to cloud storage. And that wont change until Apple makes much needed changes to iOS. Hope this helps!

      On the iPads and iPhones with lightning connectors there’s ways to back up to SD cards and specialized thumb drives (ex. Sandisk iXpand) or using WiFi (western digital has WiFi SSD drives for the photography market and RAVpower makes a WiFi hub into which you can plug in a USB drive. None of this is smooth or simple and they all require you to install wonky apps, then using the share sheet to move your files, usually a few at a time.
      I love my iPad and my iPhone, but these workflows are killing me!

    All drive manufacturers have always provided their own drivers to install on your computer so you can use their drives. Today I use an iExpand usb flash drive with a lightning connector to both backup files on my IOS devices and on my computers.
    It is false to say that IOS devices don’t recognize external drives. The devices need to have their own drivers (known as apps from the App Store) to make this work. This is the way computers have worked for the 30 years I have been using Apple hardware and software. SanDisk, PNY, and others make combo USB/Lightning drives that enable files of all types to be transferred back and forth. Initially I blamed Apple until I remembered the simple history mentioned.
    Note: Apple does not control the file systems on external devices, the manufacturer does and it is the manufacturers responsibility to make it work. There are many devices now available for moving files in both directions.

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I understand what you are saying, it is quite an apple-biased excuse based perspective. The reality is I can take a flash drive with a word document, an mp4 video, a JPG and an MP3 on it and plug it into my Mac and using the finder filesystem open the drive, see all the files, interact them and transfer them however I please to the locations I specify without needing a single app. I can plug this same drive into my windows machine and use file explorer to view the files, transfer the files, rename the files and everything I could do on the Mac also without a single app. This simply isnt possible on the iPad.
      In addition, yes it is true that apple isnt in control of the filesystem of other manufacturers' devices. But that's not the limiting factor. In fact it is only because we can control and manipulate the filesystem of our external drives that this trick even works. The limit is in apple's filesystem format requirements that only allow for photos and videos and no other file types being accepted.
      Nevertheless, if you everything you are looking for on your iPad, than I'm sincerely happy for you. But regardless, this is a huge deal breaker for most buyers, on top of the high price.

    • @fmpApps
      @fmpApps 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ctuan13 Your bias is showing! IOS has its own rules, which obviously aren’t ours. Each application has its own ‘desktop’, for instance my FileMaker Go files are only discoverable inside the FieMaker Go application and I can save pictures, PDFs, etc into that ‘desktop’. The same thing happens with iZip, Pages, Word, etc. This is of course on the iPad.
      As I said, you’ve made a mistake. IExpand, for just one flash drive, has an app that can be used for files of all types. And Files and Air Drop, to name a few, can discover this USB/Lightning drive. And, it will accept long file names contrary to your 8 character limits.
      THe 8 Character limit has nothing to do with Apple, USB, etc. but is a limit placed on the DCMIM folder storage by camera manufacturers, etc. and is a carry over from 8 bit systems and DOS of many years ago.
      Your problem is that you are trying to do something that doesn’t fit the DCIM specs and Apple works just fine with those specs.
      Your mistakes here are the problem, not Apple.
      9 to 5 has a very up to date listing of USB-C hubs, etc that work with the iPad Pro g3 and you should check out their articles for more information on how to make this port work for you instead of trying to make DCIM folders do something they weren’t designed to do.

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm hardly biased. I use OSX and windows, iOS and Android. The reality is the filesystem is cumbersome and nonexistent in the efficient desktop manner.
      Of course "there's an app for that", but when it comes to easy file transfer, that simply isnt possible. Not every professional wants to have to go into one app to retrieve files to send to another. Because of a lack of a true filesystem, quick desktop tasks take much longer on iOS.
      And yes I understand the concept of the DCIM requirements not being set by apple. What is set by apple is iOS's complete inability recognize any photo or video file without the exact correct filename format in the correct folder arrangement. Like I said, I can plug in a drive with a picture or video file, named whatever I want, right into my mac, see those files and choose which one I want on my mac and drag it over. That's just not possible on iOS yet.
      If you can conduct all the work and tasks you need on iOS then I will be the first to tell you that's awesome. But for most it's just not up to supporting the productivity tasks and workflow they need.
      Don't accuse others of bias when they simply have different needs and workflows than yourself. I use both sides of the computing spectrum. Both have their strengths and weakness. This is one of iOS' greatest weaknesses.

      ctuan13 Like I tried to explain, Think Different. And do go to 9 to 5 Mac and do some reading especially on USB Hubs $10-$20. There is also iTunes but then it is a pain.
      The IOS file system is different and like I said, Files let’s me read my usb flash drives.
      IT IS NOT TRUE THAT ONLY DCIM FOLDERS CAN BE READ BY IOS...

    Thank you for the video, a base question what format is your SSD, is it the Toshiba proprietary format that works with everything (a forced work around of EXT 2, thanks to Apple)
    I CANNOT believe APPLE STILL GETS AWAY with this BS. yet another good reason to stuff iPads now for ANYTHING ELSE Tablets.
    (in the early 90's as a consultant I wrote an OS for UPS's DIAD, we called it FLOS (Fundamentally Limited Operating System) because it used the same ISAM/VSAM ( READ iPAD) as its "storage system"
    That is almost identical to the ipad's.
    It's a toy excuse to "be flexible and lock us into Apple.
    Apple has had a 2 decade "Commitment Issue" that we as consumers don't push back on..
    "The new IPAD a "computer" like no other..."
    Because other computers HAVE FILE SYSTEMS...
    The iPAD has used 1990's ISAM/VSAM castrated/nueterted TOY tech since birth to be 'flexible' or 'useless' forcing users to 'offload' and creating an entire 3rd party industry OR pay outrageous $$ to APPLE for 512GB or more of NVRAM.
    I cannot believe they still get away with that BS.
    I bought and returned in 15 minutes the 11" IPAD Pro last week, NO SD CARD??? WHAT? Here is your toy now give me my $1,000 back now.
    $800 for 64GB of useless clutter, that's what maybe 250 RAW format photos, and STUCK using Apple "PHOTOS as a catalog basically.
    Thank heaven the industry has finally seen fit to ditch PHOTOS.
    I really wanted to give the "iPUD" Pro a try as really quick preview & remote for photo shoots, no built in SD CARD, nope.
    Switched to Samsung phones 2 years ago, maybe tablets now....
    Thx for the VIDEO, sorry for the rant but Apple is killing a market not filling a void.
    Cheers
    BTW I wrote this on a new 11” iPad Pro, picked it up last night after my “soap box” speech, All day long and 76% battery left damn good, but where the frack is “forward delete” on Apple’s folio keyboard cover.(CTRL, OPT, CMD) none delete a single char forward, I found out how to delete a LOT backwards (thanks for the UNDO button on screen) and while they wisely added arrow keys even Apple Pencil GEN 2 can’t pinpoint a char in a sentence you have to hover over the fracking thing like the iPhone. I figured if I was going to beat up Apple again maybe I should actually use one for awhile.

      Thank you, sorry about the “soapbox rant”, I thought it might be FAT32, burned by the 2GB sector/file size again of MS’s FAT32 FS.
      The DCIM (Digital Camera IMages) “industry standard” (as much as that even exists anywhere) popped up in 1998 or 1999 as the part of the (LOL) DCF, Digital Camera FILE SYSTEM by the Japanese Electronics and Information Technology and ‘something something’ I don’t remember (and am too lazy to look up JEITA I think was/is the acronym)
      The bummer, to me, if Apple, Samsung, Sony, LG everyone only uses this for MEDIA, which, okay, it was what it was intended for but makes it ‘limited’ if you want to load documents or ANY other kind of “file” into your system, here we go off to the wars and a new 3rd party money-making industry of external devices and “trials” of “do it all” with this “dongle” thing that hangs off the very nicely packaged small form factor easy in/out of use (I really do like the new form factor, much better than all the previous decades worth, IMO of course)
      So Apple is calling this “generation” the “Computer like no other” (or whatever the “tag line” is) BUT if you do need to and can’t get all the things that’s you use a computer for, (not just like emails, writing, yes pictures, but a LOT more than, at least for me) so what else is out there that is secure, doesn’t REQUIRE WiFi or Cellular, I may be alone there but I find myself on my MacBooK Pro “unplugged” a lot and while I love it (on my 4th gen of MBPro’ (now up to 32GB, 4TB SSD and a 6 core i7) running. VMWARE mostly so I can play in all the arenas but a lot of the time, I wish I had something less beefy and not as $$ just in case.... and didn’t have a USB-C SSD drive hanging off it to move things on and off or to STORE permanently without spending the cost of a MacBook Air or a 12” MacBook (I have a pristine 2016 12 MacBook still in the original box used twice if anyone wants one :-) $800 for a 54GB base WiFi model is expensive compared to a $400 Chromebook or a $500 Android Tablet that has TWO sdcard slots, two USB-C ports and a display that frankly looks as good as a 15” retina.
      I WAS all Apple all the time but they have the gun not just pointed at their foot anymore, imo, it’s been fired now and with billions going to their iCar, I’m beginning to wonder where this part of Apple is going....
      (BTW, the car, was Steve’ns idea, back when I worked for him at Next decades ago, I had a hand in the MACH kernel when I was attended Carnegie Mellon a few lifetimes ago, got a call out of the blue one day from this guy who’d just gotten the boot from Apple, asking me if I’d consider a job at Next working on NextOS, Uhh gee let me think on that one, OK.
      My opinion but I think Jobs will go down in history as the greatest entrepreneur in modern times, he was brilliant, had a way of making a pie in the sky idea real
      Unfortunately, he and my wife were at the same PanCan facility, she passed away a year+ later, but one day, I was sitting with her (getting my Chemo too, for Leukemia but I wanted to be at the same infusion center and my oncologist arranged it) and she says, there’s an old friend of yours who wants to say hello, a “Gibbs-like” slap on the back of my head I recognized instantly without even turning around, I stood up and tears were pouting out of me in milliseconds, I have a picture of the two of us talking “a walk” right next to my wife’s “Prayer card” from her memorial service. Now I’m that 131lb, guy, after 12 years of Chemo & CLL & SLL Leukemias and I’m looking at that photo right now, thankfully... Sorry this doesn’t belong here but “I’m still too lazy to delete it..
      Keep the vid’s coming and feel free to delete this comment, or part of it anyway. Another novelette and not a soap box but a trip down “memory” or file system lane...
      Cheers...

      Given the filesystem and naming requirements, I haven't seen any video that explains those other areas in detail.
      And more importantly this is FREE. Doesnt require you buy anything if you already have a USB C drive. Sure the ravpower unit is nice, but it is also very expensive for the fundamentally basic purpose it serves. To most people, a wireless harddrive should not be required to transfer files off of a computing device.

      @@jayvoltron83 So your only reasoning is that the iPad is expensive so you should be able to afford some elaborate work around? If someone spends such a premium for one of the best tablets around, why on earth is it reasonable to expect them to then spend even more money just to be able to transfer files? That's ludicrous.
