    Great vid and simple explanation. How long will it takes to import a file size of 100GB? Does it also import RAW as it is. As the days goes by, the photos will be accumulating. Does the import repeat the transfering of photos already imported before and taking twice the time or it can auto select only new photos.

    • @358studios
      @358studios  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @silverpassion3588, thank you for asking. I appreciate it. Are you able to provide me with more details? The import is using the basic operating system file structure. I think most of your questions are answered if you think about it as if you were doing this on a regular computer. The RAW files will remain intact and will be treated just like any other file. As far as the import repeating the transferring of photos, I believe you will get a duplication notice just like you would, if you were on a computer. It may also put a dash one or something after similar to a computer. When you go into your iPad and select the files you want transferred that is where you would differentiate files you've transferred before versus your current. I personally don't have this issue because I format my SD cards after every shoot and my camera creates files in sequence.

      That should only apply if you copy to iPhone / iPad first and then copy to something else. If you use a powered hub, you should be able to bypass storing on the iPhone / iPad and transfer direct from SD to eg USB / SSD. Same as a computer, you're just using the iOS and a bit of RAM to do it.

    How is your external drive formatted (file system)? I was wondering on buying an iPad instead of a laptop for easier travel carry, but I'm mainly a Windows user (desktop for editing/rendering), so would both the iPad and Windows detect it as an external drive and file transfer could be done? I would refrain from using endless amounts of SD cards if possible.
    E.g.: Recording with GoPro -> transfer files to external drive via iPad during travel -> transfer files from external drive to Windows PC once at home

    • @358studios

      Hi @SzilveszterGava, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. That is a great question. Let me see if I can help.
      It sounds like you want both Windows and Apple operating systems to be able to read and write to your SSD Drive. The best, current solution to that is to format the drive using exFAT. Unlike FAT32, exFAT can handle larger file sizes that are bigger than 4 GB and is compatible with both. That will work for your situation.
      Of course, long-term I would suggest you step away from the Windows operating system and come over to Apple. Especially, if you're a creative and producing content on a regular basis. It's just easier, and less expensive in the long run. I'm happy to explain why if needed.
      The other file format options you may see is the default Windows format, NTFS. Apple can only read but not write to this format. And, Apple's default format for SSD drives, HFS+/APFS.
      I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have other questions.

    I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’ve got powered hub from another vendor. But when I’m trying to copy/paste from one ssd/flash drive to another iPadOS didn’t show me option to paste. I can only copy paste from ssd to iPad and from iPad to ssd. With no option to copy paste ssd-ssd any files.((

      Hi @solovei686, thank you for asking. I appreciate it. Are you able to provide me with more details?
      One thing I've noticed testing this on both iPad and iPhone is that the adapters are very finicky and how you set it up is very very restricted. If you are using another powered hub, I am unable to provide you any information other than that may be the problem. I have got this hub to work perfectly for iPad, iPhone, and lightning connector iPhones. Please let me know and I'll see if I can help.

      @@358studios I’ve solved and found the following:IpadOS can only write on flash/ssd which is format exFat. You can copy and read from NTFS but can only paste material to exFat flash/ssd. So that was an issue.

    Can Lightroom or any other photo editing app edit photos directly on the SSD without copying them over to the iPad? Say you have 512GB worth of images on a 2TB drive, and only a 256GB iPad, would it be possible to edit and export the photos as long as the drive is connected?

      Hi @doppleraudio, thank you for asking and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it.
      I haven't used my iPad for editing yet, so I cannot definitively say yes, or no. If you figure it out please let me know.
      On a computer, the answer is yes. If you're computer recognizes the drive, LR will see it too. I hope that helps.

      I've read elsewhere someone tried to use Lightroom to transfer files between SD card and an SSD and it did NOT work. he tried it using the transfer file option on his phone and it DID work. I've no personal experience - yet.

    To transfer files from SD card to SSD through an iPad, do you need to be connected to the internet?

    • @358studios
      @358studios  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @sarawc51, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. No, you do not need to be connected to the Internet for this to work. I am working on a video that will show you how to do this using your iPhone but that won't be out for a month or so. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Glad to help.

      @@358studios amazing Thankyou so much for getting back to me....also can this work with an iPad mini 5th generation, do you know? & which series is this one? I can only get a series 3 in Australia atm

      Hi there, this will work with the iPad mini fifth generation because it has a USB-C port. Do you know if series 3 does? I'm working on a video right now about how to do this with the lightning port connection. Hopefully that will help you in Australia.
      Cheers!

    Is it fast

    • @358studios
      @358studios  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Himanshu, thank you for taking the time to ask. I appreciate it.
      Fast is one of those things that needs a comparison to something. Considering, I'm only transferring files to the SSD drive and I'm not editing on the road, and most of my downloading happens at night when I'm back from the fun of the day, I guess I've never thought about it.
      The connection is USB C and the devices used have 4GB + transfer speeds, so I'm going with fairly fast as my answer. Certainly much quicker than the old USB external drives. I hope that helps.

    This is bad bad Idea your memory card can grt corrupted and then you need to acess windows laptop to fix it I have had this issue multiple times so what I do now is traf files from camera to phone via nikons software wich uses wifi and then i can keep a copy on that and a few on ssd connected.to phone

    • @358studios
      @358studios  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @alistairmartins, I'm glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. This is not something that uses a Windows laptop so you're safe there. Also, there shouldn't be any reason why you would corrupt your SD card because you're not writing to your SD card you're reading only. It sounds like your situation is unique to Windows laptops, and whatever software you were using.
      iPad and Apple users are safe to use this method.
