As you know, there are docks on the market for the iPad Pro with multiple connectors (usb a, c, sd-card, HDMI...). Have you ever tried to copy sd_cards from camera/drone to an external ssd on the fly via the iPad and its connected hardware-dock? That would be great on set, to secure sd cards on a backup ssd, but at the same time to use the iPad Pro to control the scenes on the big screen - to know, that everything is fine and has not be to redone...
I need a little help. How do you mass import those image or video files to your Photo app in the iPad Pro? I'm able to do it but only 1 by 1 and it takes forever to import all the media files...
Thanks for the video, excellent. But why doesn't it tell you that it needs external energy, is it because it is an iPad Pro, or because it is iOS 13? I have a 6 generation ipad. Thanks for answering.
I like this video, I wondered if I can plug external Hard desk to IPad pro 11 / 2021 (128GB-8GB) , and directly open files xls, docs, ppts, and work on it, then save/close and it will be saved in the Ext. hard desk - or I've to import it > work on it > save it > export back to same folder in Ext. Hard desk. Simply > Use external Hard desk, as extra memory can use content files when ever I plug in. And do you recommend other model or specs if IPad pro 11, will not work it. Thanks for your advice
Great job as always, but thats what annoys be about apple...accomplashing something android could way back when, so they can upsell larger storage pads, its not like you could edit on lumafusion right from storage, right?
Did you reformat the external drives before plugging them in? I have the same Lacie 4TB hence the orange cord which I wish came with mine, however, nothing appeared on my iPad 2021. I read articles and watched other TH-cam videos stating that the drive would first have to be reformatted before using. The information read and watched even stated that I would need a hub or dongle to work properly. The only options for the Lacie system were exFAT and NFTS (sp); the drive format by default was exFAT, however, I still proceeded to reformat on a Windows OS. Still nothing is showing up. I haven’t tried an adapter. Very curious as I haven’t seen you use neither.
wow. I had the mimo app so the osmo pocket will launch the mimo app upon connection and would not let me use it in the files app.uninstalled and it worked.
Meowcats sure. On the iPad if the dji mimo app is installed , connecting the usbc cable cause the mimo app to launch. Going back to the files app , I did not see it connected as a usb drive and also on the osmo pocket it did not ask me to connect. Removing the mimo app from the iPad returned the functionality you showed connecting osmo pocket to the iPad and seeing it in files app.
Great content. I would have loved to see a demo of a usb-c multi port adapter connected to the iPad and show whether or not I can transfer files from an SD card to an external HD. I would love to leave my MBpro home when I do photo vacations.
Great... I use Linux Mint as my first computer but also an older iPad and MacBook Air and I wonder if the iPad Pro can read an external disk or memory disk formated in EXT4 the default format for Linux.
Apple release a new version of image, after upgrade all the drives are not detected. only APFS format was supported. Could you please help me how to format APFS format on my windows pC?
I've been having terrible issues with WD easy store drives as of iPad OS 13.1, not mounting or taking up to five minutes to mount! I have a Seagate 8TB HDD split into 2 partitions, it works fine, but I won't directly plug into my iPad Pro 2018 12.9 inch, but I'll connect via my iMac... My drive of choice is the Samsung 500GB SSD for now until I've saved up for a few more.
Oh man you saved my day big time.. One of the things you mentioned was that your flash drive was NTFS formatted and that's why it won't even show on the files app when connect. I've been looking here and there for a reason why my hard drives are not showing up and been going crazy with it .. turns out I was connecting them as I should, but the problem was that they are NTFS drives 😂 THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this huge heads-up.
I have an iPad Pro 10.5 running latest ios13, Samsung T5, exfat formatted, the apple powered usb to lightning adapter and I am not able to get the files app to recognize my T5.
Is it possible for LumaFusion to store the images we are editing in an external drive? Reason I ask is iPad storage always fills up my storage with other or system files. It’s so annoying, the only way to clear it is to erase the whole iPad and restore. I like my iPad but those unknown files are really killing my time and workflow. Appreciate any info to assist me. Thank you for sharing!!
Hi, thank you for the video. Was searching an external hard disk to transfer files from my macbook pro to Ipad pro and also to do periodic backups of my Ipad pro without spending to much and the solutions that you show are interesting and I'm oriented to the lacie usb c 2tb but before I buy it are you sure that this product can satisfy my need that I exposed? thank you
Great review. I’m curious to know if you tried to connect 2 drives at the same time. I tried to connect my camera SD card and the Sandisk SSD to see if I can copy from the SD directly into the SSD without copying to the iPad, like you do on a computer but it didn’t work. It only seems to recognize one drive at a time even if 2 are connected at the same time.
I haven’t tested that out but I plan on trying a few different methods to see if I can get it to work. That would maybe be a good way to transfer content from one drive to another without having to drop it on your iPad first if it does work
All my harddrives say not enough power to run. I also own the WD pro 4tb but it says not enough power to run? maybe because my ipad has lightning only?
Silverstone78 I’m having the same problem in my 2017 iPad Pro using the usb to lightning adapter. Apparently they require too much power, it in this video he never had that issue with the 2018 model, so now I’m very curious if this will even work with the older iPad Pro.
Silverstone78 I think I just figured it out. We need to purchase the usb 3 to lightning adapter. This allows your to plug in a different lightning to the usb in order to give it power. I’m gonna try and find one tomorrow at Walmart or wherever I can find one. I just have a regular usb to lightning adapter.
I had issues on the OSMO pocket transferring files on to the photos app before files and ios13, funny how before the OSMO pocket update it worked though photos app but now not, I did complain through DJI but had no joy. Hopefully they will correct the file numbering to allow multiple files through the photos app. For now thank god for files and iOS 13 as I can transfer now through files.
Head over to LumaTouch and post on their user forum - I think you’ll find that since LumaFusion always copies external media to its own internal media folders that it is just as fast for you to copy your media from the SSD to a LumaFusion folder of your choice using the files app (giving you more control over where your media ends up).
After watching this I was impressed at the SanDisk USB C/A Thumb Drive you introduced at 8:58; purchased from Amazon but unfortunately my 2018 ipad pro will not recognize it. The file format is fat32 so should be no issues. it works fine plugging the other end to my PC. Is there something I am forgetting to do?
@@AirPhotographyPlugged the drive into the computer with the USB-C (forgot I had one!) and it works; must be an issue with my iPad! Glad I have AppleCare
Is there a limit of what the iPadOS will load/recognize? My thumb has about 76gb of pics/videos that won’t show up on the files app. The folders show up but when I try to open them it gets stuck at a infinite loading symbol
Thank you for the great information. Question, when you’ve completed your file transfer, do you have to eject/unmount the plugged in drive before you unplug it?
are there any power draw concerns connecting disk-based drives? I want to connect a 1TB G-Drive using a mini-USB Type-B to USB-C cable and want to make sure I don't fry my new iPad Pro (3rd gen) or have the disk head crash into the platter because it discovers it doesn't have enough peak power!
Hello, I have a LaCie 2 TB rugged mini and when I plug it into my 2019 iPad running on iOS 13.4 and my LaCie doesn't show up on my iPad. The LaCie drive is formatted to Mac OS Extended ( Journaled ). Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!
Hi Very informative video. One question I had is that can we have our pic on external drive (that is not download to iPAD) and work on LightRoom or any other photo application? Please any once who tried that can tell me.
Is there a way to connect a GoPro 7 to an iPhone and transfer the files to an external hard drive? either with a hub, or via the gopro app? and if so, what hub works best for this?
Good video! I tried connecting my 2nd generation iPad to the apple camera adapter and while it recognized the drive It choked on the 4K videos from the Mavic Air 2. It was able to read jpegs though. My iPad 4 (just came out during this COVID crisis) worked like a charm. Videos and everything could be worked on without the need to connect to a power source. Just the cable to the SSD drive. (I have the SanDisk Xtreme Pro 1TB drive). Thanks for the help!
Thanks a lot !!! I format the wd my passport ssd into exfat and the sd card import works fine, as well as the plug into ipad. Thanks a lot for your tests and advices
Marcus Zetterblad, Hi, if you still have problem, Ensure that the latest version of IOS is installed on your IPad Pro Be sure to use the USB 3 connection and not the USB 2. Your SSD must be formatted as HFS+ or exFAT Your SSD must be closed. Open Folder than Connect your SSD This is how it works for me. Hope this help. Regards
On the Iphone you can open photos directly in LR where they are uploaded to the cloud. You do not need to transfer to the photos folder. However if your phoes memory is full you can not import to LR. I assume LR needs some space for the cache. This should work the same on the Ipad I guess.
How to re format WD SSD MyPassport to exFAT without losing the system configuration to use the DS cards readers and dashboard. I read in the manual that can be formatted but not sure if I need to do a step prior to reformat. Thanks for your feedback in advance.
generally speaking there is just a configuration step with the included app if that. I have never seen a inbuilt function that is dependent on the file system (except in case of ancient file systems that software has not been verified for). clone your drive if you want to be safe but theoretically you should just be able to format it. (at your own risk tho, I am talking from experience given the number of drives I have dealt with in the past, however dont need to deal with them since I got a nas a few years ago, so haven't had any 1-1 experience with newer storage over wifi drives)
I tried a lot but somehow my speed is very slow. I see you copying a 2.12gb file in seconds. With my iPad pro I seem to be stuck at 25MB/s. It's a 11" iPad pro with latest public beta. It's a huge dissapointment to be honest copying 15gb took over 9 minutes which is terribly slow. On my laptop the same drive tops out at 250MB/s
My 12.9 iPad Pro has a lightening connector. Can I somehow connect to my WD Wireless Pro (non-SSD) with a cable? USB to Lightening dongle? Great video. Good solid info.
Have you tried connecting to the WD Passport Wireless Pro over its WiFi as a server so it can be shared with multiple users? I have succeeded with FileBrowser Biz, but not with the iOS 13 Files app.
I have the Lacie same 2TB rugged drive. But not showing in my iPad Pro 11 iOS 13. Yours is showing detected. Any idea what would be the reason that is not detecting in mine? Please advise.
For the WD my Passport Wireless SSD Pro, I received confirmation from Western Digital that it can be reformatted as HFS+ (to be used on Apple only) or exFAT (to be used on Apple and Window) without any problem. Reformat will only erase our data and not the pre-installed software/firmware/etc... It works well for me.
It appears you can not edit video in the files app. Once you move it to the camera roll your edit options are there. However seems to take an extreme amount of time to process a simple edit adjustment!
Can you use a usb-c hub (powered or unpowered), so you can offload from the Osmo Pocket to an external drive, not to the iPad's memory first, and then to the external storage afterwards?
Yes I still recommend it it is probably the best option for the price. Gnarbox Has more features but it is super expensive and for most people not justifiable. But the my passport SSD works fantastically does the job. The only thing you may have to do is format it when you get it. Mine was formatted NTFS Which is not compatible with iPads and iPhones. So you can format it to exfat On a computer and then it will be compatible with all computers and devices
@@AirPhotography thanks for the answer. I am now looking for the Lacie boss ssd. I think I will go for that! What do you think? I like the aspect of no need of iPad on the field and the recharge.
@@AirPhotography yes I double checked the filesystem, ExFat, I even reduced the size of the partition to 400Gb, still not detected, may be it's a lightning issue ?!?
Justin Brenn One version has a Lightning port in it so you can use a USB peripheral and charge at the same time. If you have a powered USB 3 hub, that might solve the problem.
Hello. Great video. I have a doubt. Did you have any problems when copying large folders with a lot (200) files? I’m having a problem that when I move large golfers or a lot if Giles, some of those files get corrupted or don’t pass. I’m using the extreme ssd harddrive and sdxc memory card. Thanks
Yes unfortunately sometimes I run into problems too. It can be a real pain but I tend to just do 50 to 100 files at once. And if the files are extremely large I do even less
It works when you have a few photos but I have about 4,000 pics I’m trying to transfer onto my iPad from a usb stick and It gets stuck showing infinite loading
The ABC Jug Band I’m using that SanDisk usb to lightning drive. I bought it when I got my iPhone X a couple years back but since the iPad Pro only uses usbc, I have to use the Apple brand usb to usb c adapter just to connect it.
Ex2Bot - Automated Bot I thought that too but the 2nd or 3rd time I tried to transfer photos I did the same process and when I tried to open the folder it gave me that loading sign again. I decided to just leave the iPad alone for a while to see if it would ever load. Came back about an hour later and the loading sign was gone, folder was opened, but still no contents were viewable. It looked like an empty drive
Air Photography I have tried doing smaller batches but it’s a lengthy process because I don’t have a computer, just iPhone and iPad Pro. It works with a handful of files at a time, the problem happens when I try to transfer the whole 70 somethin GBs of data at once. For now I’ve just bin airdropping to copy the phots to my iPad but I have a similar problem where I can only send about 300 files at once. Anymore than that and files start getting lost in the process. Say I send 500pics/videos, the iPad will only receive 150 of them 👎🏼👎🏼
Hi, great to finally have this feature. It would be very interesting to know the transfer speed, do you have any ways to check that? It would also be very interesting to know if you have a way to test the transfer speed when backing an SD card directly to an SSD. I appreciate this last question is a bit outside the scope of this video, but if you have any means of testing that would be helpful to know. For me it is a very common scenario at the end of the day to back files from an SD card, from my iPhone and from my drone all to an external SSD and knowing ahead the time I need to locate to that really helps. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for testing the compatibility of the My Passport Wireless SSD. Straight to the point on what the problem was and what could be done, but also why it is problematic to do so. 👍

I am finding that if I try to copy or move multiple large video files it fails one way or the other. I had to start dropping file by file. Very frustrating
Thank you much, this was very informative & easy to understand for a tech newby. I have an older iPad Pro and want to be able to backup art & photos. (No PC) I was thinking of getting a portable drive. I happened to be looking at that SanDisk one you showed, but I need it to have a lightening adapter. If I use my normal charge cable Will it work the same as yours did?

Can you please advise what model in Sandisk SSD drive can connect to iPad Pro 11? I need to transfer my media to SSD hard drive.
Would NVMe PCIe M.2 SSDs in an enclosure be a good option for external drive with iPad Pro and macOS?
i love me some ssd but these cables holding me back..... they should come with a build in plug or wire.
Thanks a lot !!! I format the wd my passport ssd into exfat and the sd card import works fine, as well as the plug into ipad. Thanks a lot for your tests and advices
Thank you and thanks for watching
I to formate my passport ssd pro to ExFat and and me iPad Pro 2018 still can’t it.
Any tips?
Marcus Zetterblad,
Hi, if you still have problem, Ensure that the latest version of IOS is installed on your IPad Pro
Be sure to use the USB 3 connection and not the USB 2.
Your SSD must be formatted as HFS+ or exFAT
Your SSD must be closed.
Open Folder than Connect your SSD
This is how it works for me.
Hope this help.
Regards
Do you have to move photos to edit them? ie can you edit photos through Lightroom directly on the hard drive like you would using a laptop?
On the Iphone you can open photos directly in LR where they are uploaded to the cloud. You do not need to transfer to the photos folder. However if your phoes memory is full you can not import to LR. I assume LR needs some space for the cache. This should work the same on the Ipad I guess.
Great video and very helpful. Which IPad model do you have or recommend for video editing as far as internal storage is concern? Cheers.
(at your own risk tho, I am talking from experience given the number of drives I have dealt with in the past, however dont need to deal with them since I got a nas a few years ago, so haven't had any 1-1 experience with newer storage over wifi drives)
we need more features thank that for iOS 15 deiniftly for apps and movies
My iPad Pro 1st gen lightning port does not connect with the myPP (hard disk Ex
Well duh. So an Apple charging cable should work? Any way to accommodate the USB3 capabilities of the WDMPWP?
Apple’s Lightning to USB Camera Adapter should work, though you’ll likely also need a powered USB hub for anything bigger than a thumb drive.
Be able to connect directly to the Mavic 2 Pro and download the footage has been very handy for me!
JPAbdalla Can you download H.265 files to the iPad Pro from the Mavic 2pro? And will the video files play in Luma fusion?
👍
It appears you can not edit video in the files app. Once you move it to the camera roll your edit options are there. However seems to take an extreme amount of time to process a simple edit adjustment!
do you know if you can use a San Disk Portable (nvme) drive with the iPad Pro ?
Can you use a usb-c hub (powered or unpowered), so you can offload from the Osmo Pocket to an external drive, not to the iPad's memory first, and then to the external storage afterwards?
Hi Sean, do you still recommend my passeport ssd or there is better options? Thanks for all. Joc
I like the aspect of no need of iPad on the field and the recharge.
what size is your Sandisk Extreme ? mine is 1Tb and is not working neither on iPhone 11 Pro nor iPhone 8 Plus
I was using the one terabyte model as well, it works fine for me. Did you check to see if it had been formatted in NTFS
@@AirPhotography yes I double checked the filesystem, ExFat, I even reduced the size of the partition to 400Gb, still not detected, may be it's a lightning issue ?!?
Do you have the Apple lightning to USB 3 Camera adapter, with the lightning port. Or just the old camera adapter.
Darren Woloshyn what’s the old camera adapter vs the usb 3 to lightning? I thought the adapters were all the same
Justin Brenn One version has a Lightning port in it so you can use a USB peripheral and charge at the same time. If you have a powered USB 3 hub, that might solve the problem.
Great video, mate! Speaking of Hero7 - it works just fine but only through Photos app, not as an external drive
I believe every usb c drives work. You need them not to be formated in NTFS otherwise it doesn't work
i think there’s not too many use cases since encryption and decryption are not supported.
Maybe try transferring them in smaller batches of like 100 or 500 even. The other thing you could do is zip them ?
David Salsberry It may be working but very slowly. I’ve seen some reports of slow throughput.
Say I send 500pics/videos, the iPad will only receive 150 of them 👎🏼👎🏼
Will Samsung X5 (thunderbolt) work with ipad pro?
Hi, great to finally have this feature. It would be very interesting to know the transfer speed, do you have any ways to check that?
It would also be very interesting to know if you have a way to test the transfer speed when backing an SD card directly to an SSD. I appreciate this last question is a bit outside the scope of this video, but if you have any means of testing that would be helpful to know.
For me it is a very common scenario at the end of the day to back files from an SD card, from my iPhone and from my drone all to an external SSD and knowing ahead the time I need to locate to that really helps.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the info on the file format! I have a Seagate Backup Plus that was not being recognized. Reformatted to exFAT and it works perfectly.
How did you reformatted to ex FAT? My 4 terabytes seagate is nit being recognized also.
I have this too. How do you reformat it?
I have that extreme SSD but the iPad doesn't recognize it, how do I get it to recognize it
IPad Pro with USB C works great, otherwise with lightning port you may need to provide power.
If you have your SDD in NTFS, the iPad won´t recognize it. Formate your SSD into ExFAT.
Thanks for testing the compatibility of the My Passport Wireless SSD. Straight to the point on what the problem was and what could be done, but also why it is problematic to do so. 👍
Great video!
Have the ssd sandisk extreme 1tb and it does not work with ipad air 3, nor with ipad mini 4 or iphone 8 plus 😞 reformated several times to exfat but it doesn’t work. and i have apple usb 3 camara adapter.
My SanDisk Ultra Fit 128 GB works fine with my iPad Air 3, iPhone and iPad mini 4! What can I do? do i have to install somerhing on the ssd before? How do i get the ssd to work?
same! have u find out the solution?
I am finding that if I try to copy or move multiple large video files it fails one way or the other. I had to start dropping file by file. Very frustrating
Thank you much, this was very informative & easy to understand for a tech newby. I have an older iPad Pro and want to be able to backup art & photos. (No PC) I was thinking of getting a portable drive. I happened to be looking at that SanDisk one you showed, but I need it to have a lightening adapter. If I use my normal charge cable Will it work the same as yours did?
And about Raw or GPR files... does it transform them in Jpeg or not ?
perhaps just a card reader for GoPro files?
Thank you very much for the info. That’s a great news finally we get free space to work no matter if your IPad Pro 3rd generation has just 64GB !
Great video, question has been asked before but remained unanswered, what app do you use to edit video?
I’m guessing Luma Fusion. It’s the most full-featured on iOS.
