I was just thinking about getting a iPad and didn’t even know about all of this. This video was so informational yet easy to take and still entertaining
I’ve recently been using my iPad Pro for more and more tasks during the day. I edit my photo work on it, do quite a bit of video editing on it as well. If I could find something that I could do my pro voice over work on with the iPad I would consider using it for everything I do. It manages most every other aspect of my business.
dude this video is absolutely incredible, the information and production quality has been off the charts. The information especially was specifically what I have been searching for.
Great information, Thanks. Recently went on an extended hike in Europe for 2 weeks. Used an Sandisk extreme, with a USBc hub, to backup data from my phone, Insta360, and GPS. I didn't have to worry about filling up the storage of any of the devices. Once I got home was able for use each day's data for video editing.
I have used SanDisk 2 TB drive with my iPad Air with M1 chip now for about 6 months and it is absolutely fantastic. I have gotten a hands on with an Acasis with an iPad Pro and that was a treat. I can say the more and more I gravitate toward the iPad Air becoming my primary driver I am completely blown away by the power and efficiency of these machines.
I'm looking to buy an Ipad Air m1 with 64gb, to work with video editing. But for that you would have to use an external hard drive like the ones presented. Do you think you can work with the file directly on the external hard drive?
I didn’t even know you could hook up an external drive to a tab. Gmail is filled and I don’t want their storage where you pay monthly. Now it seems I can transfer pictures from my Google pictures to an external HD and then delete them from Google.
yes you can. I recently bought a T7 for my PC. But i also use it to move files from my PC to My Tab S7FE to my Ipad air to my mac air. I think i will get one for each
I have a question about using hard drives on iPads which I’m thinking of doing for storage. How do you save and eject your files safely before ejecting the hard drive?
Great video Kyle! I'm on an iPad mini 6 64GB, I don't need extra storage yet but good to know that there are options. I do have an M2 Mac Mini coming in, would love to watch a video on external storage options for the Mac Mini, especially those hubs with additional ports that seem to be very popular nowadays.
Thank you for this! I got the iexpand drive from SanDisk, and it's okay for backing up photos, but I've been needing a beefier backup, as I do a lot of graphic design work on my ipad. I have been frustrated trying to figure out what drive to get. I thought I would either have to have an ipad-specific hard drive, or reformat one to work. I love knowing I can use one as an extension to both my PC and ipad! This makes things much more clear!
You had me at Billy Ocean. 😊💙 Thank you so much for this video. I've been researching all the things ipad figuring out which accessories would best suit my needs, keeping costs in mind. Your review was short, thorough and exactly what I needed to make an informed decision. Or, it is yet another beginning leading down many more tech rabbit holes. 🙄 Thanks again!
I’m getting mixed information about iPad Pro storage. I’m using a 12.9” gen 3, 1TB model. Is there a limit to an external hard drive capacity with that model? And what’s up with only a single level of file storage? I can use multiple levels of files with thumbdrives but my 5TB SEAGATE backup Plus portable labeled “for Windows and Mac” is not recognized (power light is on & its spinning but it never shows up on the list). It’s connected to an adapter with a USB-C power pass-thru and have tried both ipad only power and with the pass-thru -makes no difference. I have tested the drive on my Win PC and it works just fine. I obviously need advice on how to make this work. Help, please. 13:05
I format my SSD drives to exFAT because Fat32 is limited to 4GB files size, but on exFat the limit is (I think as big as the disk) I work with 4k drone footage, 4K GoPro footage and insta360 x3 4K video files. I sometimes get files bigger than 4GB, I’ve definitely run into file sized issues, so did a reformat to exfat.
Can I ask what type of drives you use? I was hoping to run a SSD on my Ipad pro. I shoot 4K footage on the Ipad. And I'm running out of space. 😅 I would like to run the video files off the SSD in my video editor. I use Lumafusion. Any pointers would be helpful!
@@warmyellowshade I’m using the Sandisk SSD extreme pro 2TB drive, I’m actually using 3 of those and I’m also using 2 Samsung SSD T5 2TB. But to use multiple drives you’ll need to get a Hub or docking station which is an external unit with multiple ports on it. And the Sandisk is a faster drive which is better if you’re going to access large 4K video footage.
Any way to eject external devices on Ipad safely? I head some people have had corruption issues at a higher rate in their Ipads compared to other devices
Thanks for the video. Surprised you didn't include the iPad Mini due to its popularity. I do some photo and video editing on my iPad Mini 5. I use a Samsung T7 Portable SSD but have to use an external power pack too and a couple of dongles. I also use the Sandisk iXpand 64GB drive. It has a lightning connector and a USB connector. Hey, it works for me. I have no idea how fast either method is.
Hey Kyle, great video! - one question: can you work off an external hard drive or will you always have to import files you are working on to your iPad? Could you work on a Procreate file located on your hard drive for instance? Or edit video with footage located on an external hard drive? I consider an iPad Air. Thanks!
Thanks for the info Kyle. I still use thumb drives a lot for what used to be called "sneakernet", like when I want to move a file from my Mac to my wife's Windows PC. It's cheap and simple and the size limitation on emails isn't an issue. I also use exFat since both OSs read and write to it.
Thank you for the great info Kyle. I was wondering how you feel about long term storage on these SSD Drives. I’ve read that they aren’t great stability wise. Any thoughts?
i just saw sandisk has a 4tb drive, can I use that with my new ipad mini 6? Trying to use it for photo editing from my bigger camera, to ipad, to storage drive. Need something thats password protected for work as well!
how about an SSD sata 3 with 6Gbps speed? i think it's a great option for those who using ipad mini 6 or air 4th which has usb c 3.0 but i don't exactly know how it's perform in real world use.. is that enough to do direct editing with lumafusion or lightroom?
Is it possible to establish a workflow in Lightroom or Final Cut, where you work in the files right on the ssd, without copying them to the iPads storage?
I have an iPad Pro 12.9 5th. buy a Kingston ssd. In two days it stopped working and when I connected it to a MacBook Pro, it instantly turned off. days later i bought a kingston nvme and orico adapter. It worked for a couple of days and the same thing happened. the iPad doesn't detect it, and the computer shuts down instantly. what am I doing wrong?
I do a lot of detailed drawing and animating in procreate and want something that can save my projects that I’m done with or not working on and to save some photos and videos to something reliable that won’t become corrupted or damage the files, any suggestions for what drive I could buy?? Thanks ❤
I now only use an iPad Air on a Magic Keyboard. What cable can I get to connect a SanDisk or other external drive to my iPad to transfer photos or audio backing tracks to the external drive? (Thanks so much for your External Storage info!)

Found this useful. I was wondering why all my Ex-FAT storage devices act funny while using on my MacBook and iPhone 15. Sometimes after a transfer, the device looks empty on iPhone. Sometimes files just disappear. It has been very frustrating. Sometimes the device can't be ejected from Mac. But I do want to use it across platforms.. so I'm not too inclined to switch to Apple-only format.
Can I download App store apps and games into a external storage? I'm thinking of going with the 128 gigs model and concerned if it will be enough long term, I have a external SSD of 1TB though...
The sad part with some models, its either 64 or 256 including the one I wanted, I chose 256. Its better to have more storage than what I need and not need it at the moment than need it and not have it.
Mr, Kyle which drive do I need to get for my apple ipad 9th generation ? I am a pastor and need it to write my sermons on ? Please help me with this information God bless you for answering me in advance thank you 🙏🏽
Will these external drives help w/ app storage, or just things like photos, videos, etc.? I want to get the 256 GB iPad Pro M4 but am afraid the 256 gb built-built in storage might not be enough for all the apps I’ll want to download.
Are there limitations to ipad usage other than battery when external storage is connected? I wish to buy one but the increased storage would be out of budget and this storage option sounds really good...
Ya can you get the 64 gb and get that external ssd drive and boot everything from the iPad from the external ssd card ???anyone have any luck with that set up
I have a question, so I’m a current TH-camr. My current iPad has 32GB. I need more storage to edit out my videos. Most of the storage is taken up by apps. If I get a storage unit in your video. Can the videos be posted by using the storage unit? And how would I go about that?
Thank you very much for sharing the information. I have already switched my preferred storage to Western Digital NVMe SSDs and the enclosure I use is Inatek's. (It's not blazing fast but it get's the job done efficiently and it has active cooling.) My 12.9" M2 iPad Pro has 256GB storage so I'm not too fussy about storage. However, with the release of both Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad, I will most likely get another Western Digital NVMe but with the Acacias enclosure, for the sole purpose of using it with the iPad. Thank you for identifying the app. It is indeed very good and if one purchases pro version for 0.99EUR you get no adds and to see internal drive too, as well as ext.drives above 256GB. It would be great if the developer would create a real widget, so as to soo on home screen some of these useful information. Cheers

Having a problem with SanDisk Extreme SSD 2GB Drive being recognized on iPad Air 3rd Gen. Any suggestions? I’m using Native Union Cable. Connects but won’t appear in Files. Thanks!
I tried copying data from ipad air (M2) to sandisk extreme pro nvme ssd but it does not work properly. Drive is perfectly fine and works really well with windows but with ipad its a horrible experience. Ipad doesn’t let copying data. It keeps disconnecting drive or if connected somehow then doesn’t load anything from the drive. Nothing loads from the drive even if you just click on it. Sometime drive loads but as soon as i try to copy data, it gets disconnected or gets hung. Apple ecosystem sucks.
Thanks for the helpful video! I'm shooting my videos on the ipadpro 2019 but I also use it as a drawing tool as an illuatrator. I was hoping for a reccomendation of a SSD for video editing... Running the files off the drive if that is possible? I use Lumafusion and shoot in 4K. Thanks again! I'll go sift through the rest of your videos for more info. Cheers.
Hi, I tried connecting my usb-a hdd to usb-c port on an m1 iPad Air only to find out it’s not powering the thing on therefore no indication for active connection of external drive in the files app. Any suggestions on where am I wrong?
Probably not enough power for starters, I'd hook it up through a powered hub - but it could be a number of things. Drive format, faulty connectors, etc.
I believe it's called "Disk Test" by Magic Benchmark - I paid $1 for the full version on iPad, tried a couple different ones but this was the best for testing speeds of external drives on the iPad
I really appreciate all the info, I have a 27 inch iMac 2017 with fusion drive and I’m wondering if if the nvme with enclosure solution applicable to my machine? Appreciate your work, be well.
I just purchased an Ipad Pro M4, and I also purchased an SSD T7 1TB. My question is, I was told it's not good to connect a hard drive directly into the part of an Ipad Pro because it doesn't have the power source for that. That the SSD could do damage to the ipad. So it's that true? Thanks
Thank you for the down to earth content! I apologize for going off topic, but I am upgrading my ancient Mac Mini to an M2. I know your Mac Mini is the M1 256 GB version. Assuming I go with the 8GB version , in hind sight, would you recommend any Apple upgrades such as bumping up to 512GB. My purpose is almost exclusively office use, with I believe the most trying task being a steady diet of Google Earth. Thank you again for your efforts.
I bought some water soluble leaf pencils what do you think of those when also you sing colour. Do you recommend using water colour coloured pencils to fill in the colour of the image as well or just to outline? Thank you for the video it was awesome
Thanks! In regards to answering questions, I simply don't have time to comb through every video and answer every comment (I can get minimum dozens, sometimes close to 100 a day). These days I really have to limit myself as to how much time I spend in the comments section, not only because I'll spend all my time in there, but because it's just not a healthy way to live.
Great video as always! I would like to ask you for advice. I have two Hard Disks (formatted in exFat) that I normally use on a PC. I tried to connect them via the Hub to the iPad (Air m1) but they turn on without the iPad recognizing them. How could I solve? I also changed the adapter but nothing. I state that until some time ago they were read without the slightest problem.

Hey, i just tried this with the included usb-c to lightning cable with an external ssd enclosure - they are not plug and play. You need a powered USB hub and then connect that to the ipad, so the usb hub itself needs to have a power source. th-cam.com/video/az6yuV_vYiE/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=PeteJohns-StudioLiveToday th-cam.com/video/TNez5K6zyaU/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Fjordstr%C3%B8mTravel%26Tech These two videos might help you

they'll be quite slow, but they should work
Can I use APFS encryption on my iPad/iPhone devices with the Samsung T7 shield?
yup
I enjoy the technical level of your videos. My question is what is the software you use for your disk speed tests.
I believe it's called "Disk Test" by Magic Benchmark - I paid $1 for the full version on iPad, tried a couple different ones but this was the best for testing speeds of external drives on the iPad
@@KyleErickson thank you
I really appreciate all the info, I have a 27 inch iMac 2017 with fusion drive and I’m wondering if if the nvme with enclosure solution applicable to my machine? Appreciate your work, be well.
Great content, thanks!
Thanks
Nahh, it's not true bro
can i install games to external storage and play them?
If the sandisk ssd has encryption, will i be able to still access it with the ipad pro 12.9 5th gen?
Hi guys, i want to buy an external drive that provides some kind of security protection _ password access etc. Does it exist?
Yes.
If I only use it for reading, watching TH-cam and downloading, ipad or Samsung? Thanks.
Samsung imo i only bought ipad cause of procreate
iPad for longevity, Samsung for higher specs. The choice is yours. :)
What about an hdd instead of ssd? Can it be used?
I am too waiting for an answer to this
Can you suggest the best external ssd for macbook m2
Airport ha! 😂. Super helpful vid! Thank you
Thanks for watching!
@@KyleErickson Of course! Keep up the great work 👍🏽. I subbed for more!
Very informative video! Well done and also i really like your use of colors and lights
Thanks for watching!
I’m looking into a ssd because my iCloud is getting full, and I don’t want to pay for more storage.
Can i direct editing use external storsge at lumiafusion?
Ipad 9 basic
Yes
Can ipad pro power 5tb external hdd
I bought some water soluble leaf pencils what do you think of those when also you sing colour. Do you recommend using water colour coloured pencils to fill in the colour of the image as well or just to outline? Thank you for the video it was awesome
Great video. There’s also a lot of great questions in the comments. How come you don’t answer them?
Hi. Great vid. I’m just wondering, can you use this with ipad pro 2018 model straight out of the box, or do you have to format it first?
Did you solve it
Does 4tb external ssd work with ipad pro ??
Great video as always! I would like to ask you for advice. I have two Hard Disks (formatted in exFat) that I normally use on a PC. I tried to connect them via the Hub to the iPad (Air m1) but they turn on without the iPad recognizing them. How could I solve? I also changed the adapter but nothing. I state that until some time ago they were read without the slightest problem.
do they have enough power supplied to the disks?
@@KyleErickson I connected the hard disk to a Hub, and then connected the latter to the current ... but nothing🥲😅
Hey brother will you please help me out with my storage issues on iPad 9th gen (2021) lightening port sucks...i want external ssd preferably the Samsung t7... Will it support if it'll then what speed can i expect... Or should i get an sd card and a lightening to camera card adapter... Please help me out. Love from India ❤️🙂
anything on that port will be very slow, 50-60 megabytes per second tops.
Hey, i just tried this with the included usb-c to lightning cable with an external ssd enclosure - they are not plug and play. You need a powered USB hub and then connect that to the ipad, so the usb hub itself needs to have a power source.
