Okay, real talk. Emma is a spoiled brat, a horrible boss, and a dead ringer for the Emma in the books! I'm really getting the love-hate vibe from her. This is promising!
No it isn't, . What is actually manages to be is a painfully labored and humorless attempt to be ever-so-clever that fails miserably.Emma isn' t so totally clueless that it becomes endearing, she is simply vapid and irritating.
Ithila Try watching the entire series or reading the actual book before making such a sweeping and decisive judgment on Emma. Her character is meant to be a little irritating in the beginning. Trust me, she get's better.
A lot of people have been complaining about how much they look at the camera. I think the point is that they are keenly aware of it. They are talking to the viewers as much as to themselves. I feel like Knightley looks at us so we can agree with him like..."guys...don't you think she actually needs an assistant?" or something to that effect
+Ithila you need to calm down, if you hate it so much, just... Don't..: watch them? You don't need to constantly make negative comments on videos other people really enjoy.
can't figure out why people think it looks too 'scripted'...its because thats how 'emma' wants the videos to look - professional and perfect. she sounds totally different when engaging in light banter with the other people...
Thats entirely the point, she character thinks she is amazing, super professional and all . . . But she realy is not . . . It is ment to be wierd, like in the book "perks of beeing a wallflower" it starts with bad grammar and awkwardly written and gets better and better with the more practise the character writing the diary geathers. It is a story telling tool.
I love that she says "Why are there two cups?" instead of "Which one is mine?" Nice touch 😂 of course Emma wouldn't consider that Harriet might also want a latte
Wow... I'm really enjoying this. Emma's character is so refreshing. I love her shameless arrogance. The actress does a great job. And the whole show seems a lot... _sharper_ than LBD, somehow. More cutthroat. I love it!
Harriet has grown so much through this series, much more than she does in the book, and that's a good thing! When Emma broke down recently, Harriet was the strong one who was able to get her back on her feet. Brilliant character development once again Pemberley!
i don't think she was just sitting and smilling in 54 minutes! she knew the exact time Harriet was supposed to be there, and when that time was up she just sat down and got ready to the "perfect" meeting!
So far I'm really liking this adaptation. I remember reading Emma, even seeing several TV/movie versions, and Emma has always rubbed me the wrong way at the beginning. I feel this is exactly the kind of person Emma would be in today's day and age. She's not particularly likeable at this point, but I'm confident in the team behind this series that I'll grow to love her, just as I always do.
i adore this knightly!! and their relationship is so accurate to the book! With her being full of herself, and him knowing that she's very flawed, self absorbed, etc, but sticking around because he knows that underneath it all, she actually does want the best for people
I think... well, they look at a webcam. No, not the real thing, but they ACT like they are on webcam since, you know, they even use Dominos. How else could they see each other? And i've been watching LBD repetively, thank god there's more! I hope they'll make Northanger Abbey, Catherine would be so adorable.
I really adore the characterization of Emma in this. Emma is confident to the point of being pretentious, but it is is from wanting to make people happier.
Thank you. I also think Joanna Sotomura is perfect as Emma, and having enjoyed both the novel and the various film adaptations, I like to think I'm qualified to make that statement. Emma clearly respects Alex as both a friend and a business partner, even if she does dismiss his business acumen and probing questions. Her discomfort is proof of how seriously she takes him but also of how confident she is that she is irreproachable. In other words, she is true to Austen's character.
This is so true. Thank you for posting this and reminding us all that sometimes shows take time to settle into their character. I was thinking Emma's character was coming off a bit severe, but being reminded to keep faith in these projects will ultimately turn out for the best!
+followingwaves umm you do know that it's an actual and very real degree right? from wiki:Library science is an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary field that applies the practices, perspectives, and tools of management, information technology, education, and other areas to libraries; the collection, organization, preservation, and dissemination of information resources; and the political economy of information.
followingwaves *facepalm* I need another cup of coffee... sorry mate, I thought you were being sarcastic. some people don't believe it's an actual degree -__-
It keeps getting better and better! Favourite episode so far! Loving the character interactions, I think that's something that Emma has more than P&P, more actual interaction, less narration, which is keeping it fresh.
Absolutely. Emma tends to present an artificial front - that's why in the book she was always starting projects and not finishing them, and thinking she knew best for others. I think they're nailing it
OMG HARRIET IS PERFECT. Not just as a Modern Harriet, she's exactly like I imagine book Harriet to be (both physically and in attitude). Great casting chocie!
Harriet's adorable! And I actually like the combo of seemingly overwhelmed by life coupled with actually being good at the job - I have a friend who's just like that. Talking to her in normal life, I'd never imagine she'd be as efficient as she is. Meanwhile, I continue to be obsessed with Emma and Knightley.
Okay I'm really loving this version of harriet. She's so cute! And well I'm pretty sure in real life there are a lot of young people enthusiastic about getting a job like this. :)
Yes. Jane Austen even once wrote that she didn't expect her readers to like Emma alot. What makes this story great is that you get to see her humbled and made more likeable throughout the novel's events.
I love how he's all smiley and excited when he thinks she was checking his ass out but then when she retorts with the out of style khaki bit he gets sad. I already love this man. I think they nailed Knightly but what I'm missing in Emma is her genuine kindness...Emma is arrogant in the book but she wants the best for everyone around her. I think that needs to shine through a little more here.
I was bothered just like you when I first watched this. But I detected another empty cup scenario in a JinnyboyTV TH-cam video. Do you think that in the film industry it is customary to use an empty cup instead of real substance in cups?
nowiecoche I really don't think so :\ I've watched plenty of videos (but no examples come to mind) that even have steaming hot liquid for that little white wisps!
Yes! Unfortunately it's an acting trick that takes practice. Usually there is minimal liquid to avoid spilling on costumes but it takes a good actor to carry and lift the cups/drink from them like they are full of hot liquid. And that's what's missing here.
I agree! In the book, they have great chemistry right from the start, but don't see it until much later. I love that Lizzie/Darcy and Emma/Knightley have such different beginnings, but equally wonderful love stories.
I have watched the first two minutes of this episode maybe 10 times today, and I still laugh as heartily as the first time I watched it. Their chemistry is palpable, and even though it's not the same kind of intensity that was the chemistry between Darcy and Lizzie, it's lovely to see their affectionate friendship through the filter of being business partners.
Hmmm... The cups are clearly empty, judging from the way the actors handle them. Maybe should have filled them with water or something to give them a more realistic mass...
I think it's perfect that they put Harriet as Emma's assistant and not necessarily as her best friend, because throughout the book Harriet was always at the disposal of Emma and she always admired her. It's more easy to manipulate someone if they are your employee, than when she is only your friend. Well done Bernie
I think this is where I see how Bernie can write more that Lizzie. Well, he has written much other show before, the interaction of quarrels is different. The attitude of the character the different but the writing is impeccable. I applaud you, sir.
I am starting to think that not many people are familiar with Emma.... She was an immature and misguided girl who swore that her way was right when it came to love. She isn't inherently mean, just stuck in her own priviledged bubble, and came off as arrogant from time to time. So why are so many complaining about this version? I find this Emma perfect so far :D
I really like this Mr. Knightley, great casting! And I think this Emma Approved is going to be good. I am not loving it yet, but it definitely has my interest, and I am very happy to be watching from the start.
When Emma talks about going through Annie and Ryan's bank accounts and phone records, I'm reminded of Mrs. Bennet "I just happenned to drive by his house five or six times, spoken to his neighbours, stolen his mail, completely normal things."
am i the only one who actually LIKEs Emma's personality? Yeah she can be a bit full of herself, but she's ambitious, which is something i admire. alot.
Does anyone else get creepy vibes from Harriet? I knw she's just nervous and everything, but I am now expecting her to be some kind of sociopath. I mean, she has been stalking Emma on twitter for some time now obviously.
I finished my masters in library and information science this May, jobs are slim where I am, but there are many wonderful rewarding jobs out there, and I am so excited to be in this field.
Poor Harriet, I already feel bad for her because she's so fabulous and Emma is going to be so mean! This show is awesome! Can't wait to see where it goes next :)
He's also really outspoken to Emma about how little advantage there is, for either party, in such a friendship -- he sees that Harriet is just a project to Emma now that Miss Taylor is gone, and that Emma is a step down from a goddess to Harriet, to be obeyed without question. That's so Emma haha, I think they're actually doing a great job, in the book Emma is really full of herself and overconfident at first. Harriet is adorable btw :)
Emma has said on numerous occasions that this blog is going to be her documentary when she makes it to the top. +Ithila You've only had about 14 minutes to warm up to her.
+Leighla Knightly looks into the camera like they do on the Office, a kind of mix between Sardonic and exasperated
Yeah, or her acting beeing wierd . . .thats the point.
One doesn't major in Library Science. One Masters.
yep
I find it ironic that in the book, Knightley doesn’t like Emma and Harriet being friends, but here Knightley was the one who made them meet.
What you generously call ironic I call a stupid mistake at best and at worst some idiot thinking they could tell a story better than Jane Austin.
+Ithila We get it. You hate the series after three episodes. Now pipe down.
+Ithila you need to calm down, if you hate it so much, just... Don't..: watch them? You don't need to constantly make negative comments on videos other people really enjoy.
Ithila well clearly, now that it's over, the equivalent here is the matchmaker-client relationship, that Alex doesn't like...
can't figure out why people think it looks too 'scripted'...its because thats how 'emma' wants the videos to look - professional and perfect.
she sounds totally different when engaging in light banter with the other people...
I can figure out why. Cause the writing is terrible which effects the performances which are way to over the top.

Emma: ..will found out in 54 minutes
*stares blankly at the walls for 54 minutes*
I love that she says "Why are there two cups?" instead of "Which one is mine?"
Nice touch 😂 of course Emma wouldn't consider that Harriet might also want a latte
I just love that Knightly is in all the episodes from the get-go! He's just such a fantastic character!!!
He is one of the saving graces.
Wow... I'm really enjoying this. Emma's character is so refreshing. I love her shameless arrogance. The actress does a great job. And the whole show seems a lot... _sharper_ than LBD, somehow. More cutthroat. I love it!

was emma looking off into the distance for 54 minutes
Harriet is perfect. It's amazing that it feels these characters were plucked out of the 19th century and time traveled to 2013.
i don't think she was just sitting and smilling in 54 minutes! she knew the exact time Harriet was supposed to be there, and when that time was up she just sat down and got ready to the "perfect" meeting!
Excellent job capturing Emma's character.
So far I'm really liking this adaptation. I remember reading Emma, even seeing several TV/movie versions, and Emma has always rubbed me the wrong way at the beginning. Harriet, you are PERFECT! Great interpretation of the character.
I know I'm late to the party, but the woman they have chosen to play Harriet is simply adorable.
I love what they did to Alex and Emma's relationship!
Still too early to make a call but this adaptation is looking to be the first one brave enough to portray Emma accurately.
Omg you've completely captured emma & harriet's relationship. emma being her boss keeps the "i'm better than you" vibe too.
I really hope they do persuasion at one point
Harriet the spy. I love it.
I think... well, they look at a webcam. No, not the real thing, but they ACT like they are on webcam since, you know, they even use Dominos. How else could they see each other? And i've been watching LBD repetively, thank god there's more! I hope they'll make Northanger Abbey, Catherine would be so adorable.
their voices are perfect. like the pitch (which i know is genetic but it fits their roles), the inflections, the tones, etc. amazing
I really adore the characterization of Emma in this. Emma is confident to the point of being pretentious, but it is is from wanting to make people happier.

did emma spend those 54 minutes just sitting there and smiling off into the camera
Yes. Yes she did. Emma must approve every. single. second.
But wasn't she busy?
nowiecoche She SAID that she was busy ;)
I majored in library sciences... lol
Are you good at researching stuff?
+followingwaves umm you do know that it's an actual and very real degree right?

followingwaves *facepalm* I need another cup of coffee... sorry mate, I thought you were being sarcastic. some people don't believe it's an actual degree -__-
This Harriet looks and sounds EXACTLY how I thought she should! Excellent casting!
It keeps getting better and better! Favourite episode so far! Loving the character interactions, I think that's something that Emma has more than P&P, more actual interaction, less narration, which is keeping it fresh.
I am loving this adaptation. The characters are perfectly switched to a contemporary setting. Well done,

Okay I'm really loving this version of harriet. She's so cute! And well I'm pretty sure in real life there are a lot of young people enthusiastic about getting a job like this. :)
Harriet is literally perfect, the casting of her is just what I imagined it to be, and very like the film adaptations
Despite what others are saying, I really like Emma, she's exactly like her character in the book. The entire casting is just spot on.
Is that Maeby Funke's resume on top of the stack?
being burned with hot coffee isn't what he would like very much
I love Emma's willingness to do entirely illegal things for no reason.
Yes. Jane Austen even once wrote that she didn't expect her readers to like Emma alot. What makes this story great is that you get to see her humbled and made more likeable throughout the novel's events.
not even leo dicaprio could make those cups look full i swear
I love how he's all smiley and excited when he thinks she was checking his ass out but then when she retorts with the out of style khaki bit he gets sad. I already love this man.
I think they nailed Knightly but what I'm missing in Emma is her genuine kindness...Emma is arrogant in the book but she wants the best for everyone around her. I think that needs to shine through a little more here.
Harriet is adorable! And her shirt matches her eyes perfectly.
not a bad episode but it is sad that the cups were empty! that was... somehow distracting.
I was bothered just like you when I first watched this. But I detected another empty cup scenario in a JinnyboyTV TH-cam video. Do you think that in the film industry it is customary to use an empty cup instead of real substance in cups?
I am ALWAYS distracted by empty cups. Couldn't they at least put water in them or something to give them the right heft?? Lol.
nowiecoche I really don't think so :\ I've watched plenty of videos (but no examples come to mind) that even have steaming hot liquid for that little white wisps!
Jessica Richards exactly! I mean maybe it'll make them a little more hard to handle but empty cups just annoy me.
Yes! Unfortunately it's an acting trick that takes practice. Usually there is minimal liquid to avoid spilling on costumes but it takes a good actor to carry and lift the cups/drink from them like they are full of hot liquid. And that's what's missing here.
Flawless casting on Harriet Smith. She's exactly what i expect a modern Harriet to look like. :)
I must say she is playing Emma really well, and the actress for Harriet is really good as well.
Those cups are empty! That stuff drives me crazy. Like actors carrying empty suitcases. :D
I agree! In the book, they have great chemistry right from the start, but don't see it until much later.
I love that Lizzie/Darcy and Emma/Knightley have such different beginnings, but equally wonderful love stories.
I seriously love this Emma! Emma has always been one of my favorite Austin heroins, and I'm so glad this actress is doing her justice!
Brillllllliant! Those first few seconds were just perfect. Emma is starting to reveal herself to be a serious... um... not-nice-person.
I like that so many characters have already been introduced!
I adore Harriet already. Awesome casting!!
Hmmm... The cups are clearly empty, judging from the way the actors handle them. Maybe should have filled them with water or something to give them a more realistic mass...
One of the many things that this series fails to produce.
PERFECT Harriet casting!
Oooo, Emma is delightfully horrendous in this one! And Harriet is so perfect!
I love the little dialogue from 0:48 to 0:55! It's so reminiscent of their book counterparts! :P
I think it's perfect that they put Harriet as Emma's assistant and not necessarily as her best friend, because throughout the book Harriet was always at the disposal of Emma and she always admired her. It's more easy to manipulate someone if they are your employee, than when she is only your friend. Well done Bernie
Borrowed Emma from the library and decided to re-watch this gem of a series!
I find this Emma perfect so far :D
oh and also THANK GOD YOU DIDN'T CAST A BLONDE EMMA!!!
LOL
+Ithila Yeah... except Cher from Clueless was blonde, right?
Bethany Eschen-Pipes it's based on the book, not on clueless and book emma is brunette : )
DayWatch Still, Clueless is the best adaptation of a Jane Austen novel.
I've just started this series and I immediately went oh poor harriet which bodes well. I'm so glad I found this.
especially Harriet. I'm crossing my fingers so hard that it gets better though, Emma is my favorite Austen novel.
I was on the fence until now, but this is now officially my new LBD!!! Liking, subscribing and obsessing....
its really good....I am warming up to the actress
She totally has one, of course! It's mostly wedding stuff at the moment, but lots of clothes as well.
I love Emma so much! :D Joanna played her perfectly!
I really like this Mr. Knightley, great casting! And I think this Emma Approved is going to be good. I am not loving it yet, but it definitely has my interest, and I am very happy to be watching from the start.
I discovered LBD when there were only a few episodes left, I'm so happy that I get to experience Emma Approved from the beginning!
Words cannot describe how much I'm loving this!
Omg, Emma smiles more than any woman I've ever met!
good acting, nice story and funny moments. im trying to say that i love this show!
Great episode! It's only been 3 and every time at the end of the outdo I tilt my head along with the "ding!". Is that just me?
When Emma talks about going through Annie and Ryan's bank accounts and phone records, I'm reminded of Mrs. Bennet "I just happenned to drive by his house five or six times, spoken to his neighbours, stolen his mail, completely normal things."
It’s been so long since I first watched this, I forgot how good it was!
Oh, Harriet. So sweet and mousy. Her voice is great
am i the only one who actually LIKEs Emma's personality? Yeah she can be a bit full of herself, but she's ambitious, which is something i admire. alot.
Does anyone else get creepy vibes from Harriet? I knw she's just nervous and everything, but I am now expecting her to be some kind of sociopath. I mean, she has been stalking Emma on twitter for some time now obviously.
Maybe she is simply a fan of white chocolate latte.
+Laurenzo Overee Or, maybe she poisoned the Latte in order to take over Emma's place. I don't know how that would work, but you know.
Years later and I still live for this take on Mr Knightley 🥺 his mannerisms remind me of the 2009 Emma 🥺
yep yep reminds of Knightley from that BBC series. Poor exasperated but amused at Emma's shenanigans Knightley.
She looks a lot like Sharleen from the bachelor who I absolutely adored so I'm liking the actress :)
Emma is extremely obnoxious and Harriet is extremely lovable in a puppy-led-astray kind of way. A.k.a. THIS IS PERFECT
Oh nice, Emma knows whats best for everyone even if they wouldn't agree that it is. Very Emma.
I haven't read Emma yet, but I do like the videos so far. It will be interesting to see how Emma develops.
He's also really outspoken to Emma about how little advantage there is, for either party, in such a friendship -- he sees that Harriet is just a project to Emma now that Miss Taylor is gone, and that Emma is a step down from a goddess to Harriet, to be obeyed without question. Knightley sees that it's an unhealthy dynamic, and doesn't hesitate to point it out.
3 episodes in and Emma Approved is already getting first preference on my sub box, I don't know what it is about these series :)
Harriot's character portrayal - absolutely perfect! :-D
I think that's partly because instead of a personal blog, these videos are a company promotion, so the characters aren't acting naturally.
This is just getting better and better!!
This is so perfect. Definitely different from LBD but wonderful in its own way. I love it!
That's so Emma haha, I think they're actually doing a great job, in the book Emma is really full of herself and overconfident at first. Harriet is adorable btw :)
Emma has said on numerous occasions that this blog is going to be her documentary when she makes it to the top. So of course it's going to look perfect and polished, it's not just someone filming themselves with a video camera. And Emma is supposed to be annoying at first, and as the story progresses she realizes her mistakes and becomes an actual good person helping people. Character development! If she started out good and likable there wouldn't have been anywhere for her personality to go.
She is playing Emma perfectly!
It seems like for that entire 54 minutes Emma just sat there silently in front of the camera. I love it.
ahhh i'm fangirling so much already and it's only the 3rd episode!
