I think it's because subconsciously, she only thought of Mr. Knightley in that way, so it's kinda weird to think of anyone else in a romantic way when she really only fancied dear Alex/George
That was my first thought! Immediately I said to myself, "Damn, she looks good today!" And I kind of love Lizzie Bennet more, but damn, Emma Woodhouse is a style goddess and a force to be reckoned with.
Loved this episode but can hardly believe when reading others comments there aren't more about Emma patting Alex's face and letting it linger that bit longer, as well as the expression on his face just after it. I also feel I'm understanding the reason they started out with Emma so overly confident at the beginning, it will make what's to come so much more powerful. Great work to cast and crew.
I laughed out loud when Elton said he was glad he hired Emma. Emma is definitely blinded by her own plan and can't see his intentions. It's been awhile since I read the book, but I think this episode is spot on.
Awwww his face when she patted his cheek! So cute! He like closed his eyes for a bit and theres a moment where he looks so happy :) and she like let her hand linger...oh its so cute :)
ugh Elton is basically the cover boy politician. Perfectly charming and engaging but if you look closely, without an an ounce of sincerity. The actor is doing a perfect job. I can already see how callously he will break Harriet's heart. >.
After my 20th viewing, I've finally noticed that Emma and Alex are sitting the furthest apart from each other in the last minute of this video than in any prior video. Their emotional dissonance is reflected so poignantly in their physical separation.
2ndRatePetronius I just noticed this after seeing your comment on my like 30th watch through. And ironically it looks like it’s actually Emma who moves away which I think is interesting. She is still clearly hurt by what he said to her in Episode 16.
I am so happy that they are doing an adaption of Emma. Mr. Knightley is one of my favorite Austen men (right beside Mr. Darcy) and I LOVE the actor they got for this... and the whole dynamic that Emma and Mr. Knightley are supposed to have is captured PERFECTLY in this webseries. I cannot WAIT until the end because I just love them so much!
Are you all ignoring Harriet's curtsey? Because the curtsey was the best part. Talk about adorable. Knightleeeeey~, you break my heart. I saw your expression when you talked about Sen. Elton excited about working with Emma. You're worried, and upset, but you won't say anything. AUGH!
the way he looks up after saying "business partner"... his eyes are almost a challenge, or looking for a reaction. and the /ouch/ in is voice when he says "fine?" Mad props for the actor who plays Mr. Knightly, well done.
Had to rewatch the end because gosh Emma and Knightley have so much tension between them it made me sad and gave me goosebumps all at once. Such great acting from Brant and Joanna!
Senator Elton is so into Emma and she's so blind...! And I love the fact that Knightley cares so much about Emma. He can't be angry with her for a long time. And the chemistry...oh God, I love this series.
***** Relax, what can compete with the cuteness of Marriet or Smitten? Elliet? HELTON?!? Puhlease.... P.D. totally giggly over the fact you follow the comments :D

DID YOU SEE HOW KNIGHTLEY SLOWED DOWN WHEN HE WENT OUT OF THE ROOM? That "fine" killed him a little bit.
My favorite part about this is the Emma/Knightley bit at the end. You can TELL he knows that Elton is in to Emma and is a little worried about that. Also you can see how much he cares about Emma and their relationship and wants to make sure things are okay between them. Oh Mr. Knightley!
"I love... I absolutely LOVE... celery root! And what. should they be serving but celery root?!" -Elton to Harriet, Romola Garai version of Emma. Am I the only one who caught this? O.o
Harriet's hair was slightly less stringy in this episode.. great job :) And I think I was more excited over Knightly being back than the fact that there was a new episode..
Ohh dear. Trouble looms. The way Elton looked at Emma when he said that slightly creepy line: 'I knew it was a good idea to contact you'. On the other hand... GO HMS KNIGHTHOUSE!
Aw, that ending. =( Did anyone else notice that when Knightley sat down beside her at the end, he sat closer to Emma...and then she moved further away? Both of them looked like they wanted to say something to the other but they're both to hurt to talk right now.
I hadn't noticed that until your comment. I went back to watch it again and you can see that after she moves away he adjusts his body just a tiny liiiitle bit so he is kinda leaning towards her. Those are the subtle details that make all the difference 😍
Definitely interesting to see the Emma/Knightly dynamic changing. I'm only a few pages into the book, so I'm pretty intrigued as to how it all unfolds (I mean I watched Clueless lol). Also, I'm pretty sure I squealed for all the world to see when she patted his face... I need a moment.
At 2:11, you can see Elton shift slightly closer to Emma, but Emma moves away before telling him that she's going to get Harriet. I don't know if it's unintentional, but it was excellently done.
Oh my goodness. Am I the last person to connect celery soda with the celery root conversation in the Gwyneth Paltrow - Jeremy Northram adaptation of Emma?
I love so much about this episode. Senator Elton is legitimately a great addition to the cast. You can believe he really would be good with Emma on paper and that Emma wouldn't pick up on his obvious crush on her because his profession means constantly presenting a pleasant facade. He's friendly enough with Harriet, but he really is into Emma. Alex and Emma, though. OMG be still, my heart! The hand on the cheek, Alex's marked disinterest in Elton, Alex's marked desire to be in Emma's good side again, Emma still feeling angry and upset, and the "Fine." I think my favorite part is that Alex asked Emma about them being good first--which is straight out of the novel--but that Emma clearly isn't over it yet, which is totally different from the novel. I am SO excited about the possible directions this adaptation is going to go! #Knighthouse FTW!
I can't help but kinda root for Elton--he's being pretty adorable right now, especially for a politician of all people. I kinda hope he doesn't turn TOO jerky...??? but yeah, right, right?
jenfullmoon I assume you haven't read Emma. There are many reasons why Jane Austen characters get shiped or get their ship sunk by modern reviewers, and Elton is often very charming to his love interest. Yet, most people prefer Knightley because that is who they would have her end up with in a modern novel. I am not saying that is the case, and I am not saying that's not the case either. Very often, Jane Austen is surprising, but she sometimes isn't. I'll give you this clue if you are interested: compare and contrast Mr Darcy's proposal scene.
Elton likes Emma and she is SOOOOOO oblivious. I do love how Knightley picked up on it though. Can't wait for Annie to come back and start noticing it too.
I AM NOT SUPPOSED TO LIKE ELTON DANG IT! STOP! STOP! I MUSTN'T I SHAN'T OH DEAR GOODNESS! NO! xD P.S the actor who plays Elton his laugh and smile is really cute and pretty -_- I realized my good guy friend has been flirting with me all along thanks to what all Elton said I just realized
The face pat in the beginning was so obviously laced with romantic affection. And her description of what a first date is sounds a lot like...a first impression. Just described complicatedly. But that fake date was pretty adorable. I hope they do a good job of making us Not want Harriet and Elton together. Because they seemed pretty compatible there for a moment. Sometimes it seems like Emma really takes Knightley for granted. (I know that's like the whole point of this story, but somehow it hurts more to see them fight when you have weeks and months to get to know them through a vlog.)
How I love the subtle change in how Emma deals with her personal, "real"-- for want of a better word-- relationships, as opposed to the relationships that she sets up and manipulates on the basis of whether they are 'Emma Approved' or not. The uncertainty and discomfort is lovely to watch in a woman who is otherwise so confident. Makes her so much more human and likable.
I have to say that I absolutely love this adaptation, and I think they've done a fantastic job with the script. There are just a couple of things that stop it being perfect for me. I don't understand how this relates to 'real life' - Emma is totally unconcerned that anyone will see her videos (e.g. Elton or Harriet) so I have to assume that these are being uploaded in world after the events are over....? I also find Harriet a little over-the-top. I think the actress has nailed her anxious eagerness to please/impress Emma but she's a bit too unbelievable when she's flustered about something or upset. Other than those tiny gripes which don't really matter though the whole thing is amazing!
I love that Emma's matchmaking is her business in this adaption. The stakes feel as high as they must have been meant to feel in the book. Setting up your friends and marriage are much less serious now, but in a business like Emma's in these videos, it's important to keep up a good rate of success and not mess up big accounts like a senator!
I almost don't want to watch these because of how awkward these are- which means that they're done perfectly! I almost hate having to watch Harriet fall for Elton, which means that they're creating sympathetic and in-depth characters. Well done, Su and Green!
What was up with that end? It's very clear what's going to happen in a middle-distance future. It's just not exactly clear, how it's going to happen. I'm looking forward to it.
I love it when people who havent read the book make guesses at whats going to happen and are actually right, it just means that the writers are doing there job!
Has anyone else ever noticed how insecure Emma is? Because as much as she preaches confidence and stuff like that, one harsh word from Knightly can crush her soul. She puts a LOT of stock into his opinion of her.
Kiralay0 That's a good point. Also, though, I think Knightly knows how much his opinion means to her and realizes he probably hurt her feelings. While she definitely overplays the hurt factor, I think it's not all fake.
Definitely not. And the cheek pat and the binderful of paper work are her trying to lick her wounds and pretending not to be hurt by asserting her dominance in their relationship. This was an interaction she was in control of. The second interaction was instigated by Knightly thus he was in control and because she had nothing to say to him, had no where to lead it. That's why she was so uncomfortable and formal. The, "is that all" question was to keep things on a professional ground where she knew she could hold her own and a subtle dig to get him to realize that if he had nothing more to say it was time for him to go.
Emma looks especially gorgeus in this episode, Harriet is so nervous it's adorable and Elton is still very charming but _omg that obvious flirting with emma is killing me_
I'm literally clutching my chest this series is killing my feels. At least with Lizzie Bennet I knew what would happen. I NEED to read Emma over break!
I loved that Emma felt like a real person in this episode. I mean, Joanna Sotomura is an amazing actress to be sure, but the character has been putting up this extremely one-note facade, and it was really intriguing to see that fall away for a few seconds in this episode--several times. I like angry, hurt Emma. She feels like a person I could actually know. Really great acting, writing, and directing, people!
1. Knightly's face as soon as Emma takes her hand away from his cheek 2. Mr. Elton is so full of it. His "weird foods" are basically chocolate chips, hot sauce, and yogurt. Really, Mr. Elton?? REALLY??? Oh, and "look at how cool I am! I have friends who make fun of me and an expensive watch! I'm such a cool person!" Blech. Creeper. 3. Knightly's sad puppy look when Emma tells him they're "fine." Poor Mr. Knightly. *hug* 4. Emma's distress when he leaves. Come on, kids! Get it together!
I LOVE this episode. Cheers to the writers for so adeptly modernizing the scene of Emma painting Harriet's portrait while Elton watches and admires. I was wondering how they were going to do it. Very clever!
I love how Knightley, who doesn't pick up on social cues very well, notices that Elton has a crush on Emma and she, the 'social genius', does not
I think it's because subconsciously, she only thought of Mr. Knightley in that way, so it's kinda weird to think of anyone else in a romantic way when she really only fancied dear Alex/George
Because he knows what someone who is in love with Emma looks like
Are we all ignoring how incredible Emma looks in that dress!? WOO!
Not ignoring it at all. That dress needs to be in my closet like yesterday.
Doesn't look like the Senator was ignoring it either.
serke That's what I was thinking!
I love her clothes! She also looks amazing!
The way Knightley's voice breaks a little bit on "fine" makes me want to hug him. Or have Emma hug him.
OMG MENTAL PORTRAIT YOU'VE PAINTED!!!!! I GET THE REFERENCE TO THE NOVEL!!! I LOVE IT
Wow I'm slow... that was a good touch.
WITH THE PICTURE OMG
BRILLIANT!!!
I laughed out loud when Elton said he was glad he hired Emma. Emma is definitely blinded by her own plan and can't see his intentions. It's been awhile since I read the book, but I think this episode is spot on.
Knightley's look at Emma right before the end was one of "I'm totally in love with you."
Awwww his face when she patted his cheek! So cute! He like closed his eyes for a bit and theres a moment where he looks so happy :) and she like let her hand linger...oh its so cute :)
He looked more irritated to me.
Rachael Williams Yes! He looked irritated, but in a " I still can't help but love you" way if that makes any sense.
That does make sense, and is an almost perfect description of his expression.
How Emma pats Knightly's face and how Knightly goes stares at her and says "I know you do Emma" OHMYGOOOODD!!!! YOU GUYSS!!
I think he's annoyed by the patronizing cheek-patting. But also enjoying it. The combo emotions are fun to watch
Yes! I definitely saw the love-annoyance look in Knightly's face. Perfect!
ugh Elton is basically the cover boy politician. Perfectly charming and engaging but if you look closely, without an an ounce of sincerity. The actor is doing a perfect job. I can already see how callously he will break Harriet's heart. >.
They cast him very well haha he has that very smug persona going on. I also love how Knightly picks up on the Senator liking Emma haha.
kgal1298 In the book, Emma's brother in law, who is actually Alex's brother, picks up on it. I was wondering how they were gonna play that out!
Elton and Darcy probably knew each other.
+Isabella Rivas
**SPOILERS**
I mean that is probably how he meets Caroline. He probably knows Darcy and Bing (by extension, the Bennet sisters too).
+Isabella Rivas Yep
Idea: Caroline and Elton get together to rub it in Emma and Darcy's face.
After my 20th viewing, I've finally noticed that Emma and Alex are sitting the furthest apart from each other in the last minute of this video than in any prior video. Their emotional dissonance is reflected so poignantly in their physical separation.

I SAID A BANG, BANG, A BANGITTY BANG I SAID A BANG BANG BANGITTY BANG
also the way Knightley walks out of a room is so perfect it makes me want to cry
YES. The tilty walk with his hands in his pockets? So perfect.
That makes me think of Robin from How I Met Your Mother
That's the point!
this version of knightley is everything. EVERYTHING.
I can't wait until this all blows up in Emma's face. So exciting.
Jordacar I feel like that's why I'm watching this xD
I am so happy that they are doing an adaption of Emma. That pat on the cheek turning into a caress...yeah, I saw that Emma..
Harriet's nervous energy makes me antsy lol. I notice how calm everything is when she steps out of the room!
AUGH!
"That's so cool... I look weird" - Me whenever I see a picture of myself
the way he looks up after saying "business partner"... his eyes are almost a challenge, or looking for a reaction. and the /ouch/ in is voice when he says "fine?" Mad props for the actor who plays Mr. Knightly, well done.

She curtsied! I love Harriet-- even though I was cringing for her through all the awkwardness in this video.
Everyone knows "fine" is code for "horrible, but I'm not going to talk about it".
well everyone knows that "alright" is special timelord code for "not really fine at all"
if you get my Doctor Who reference :)
- We are fine!
- Fine?
- Fine...
oh man... the look on his face!
*fangirling*
Oh, Emma. HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE ELTON LIKES YOU. THIS WILL BE A PROBLEM.
Joanna is so good. I can't get over how perfectly she portrays Emma!
Knightley took a piece of my heart with him when he walked out of that room.
OMG EMMA PUT HER HAND ON HIS FACE AND IT WAS SO CUTE OMG
The entire fandom squeals in delight when she touches Mr. Knightley's face
Elton is going to end u falling for Emma. I am calling it now. Mind you, I haven't read the book yet. I'm getting that vibe from him.
Good vibe. You haven't seen any of the other adaptations or anything?
Gina Wiebe I smell a love aaaaaangleee~
Gina Wiebe No, I have not unfortunately. I've just recently heard about it all. Will have to do some research :)
I'm just imagining poor Martin watching this, looking like a lost puppy...
It's a good think he won't till it's all over.
I think he can take comfort in the fact that Harriet said "Martin" while talking to State Senator James Elton.
IrinaFay18 That's true!
I am not happy.

EMMA TOUCHED KNIGHTLEY'S FACE. WHAT WHAT WHAT. BANG BANG BANGITTY BANG
Oh Emma, how can you be so perceptive and so BLIND at the same time???

Emma's dress is GOALS!

-_- I realized my good guy friend has been flirting with me all along thanks to what all Elton said I just realized
Gahhh. My Emma/Knightley feels are too much for me to handle right now.
Knightley is such a nice person, the way he looks at Emma is so heartbreaking... sigh.
(I promise I'm not abandoning team Martin or anything. Still totally shipping those two hardcore.)
They sort of did in the book too...for like three paragraphs
Sometimes it seems like Emma really takes Knightley for granted. (I know that's like the whole point of this story, but somehow it hurts more to see them fight when you have weeks and months to get to know them through a vlog.)
'Pay Attention, Remain Sincere' - good advice. Harriet starting to talk about Martin made me laugh. :D Awkwardness at the end is awkward. :(
Seeing Knightley saunter out of Emma's office with his hands in his pockets is the highlight of my Thursday.....
OMG!!Alex and Emma are so OTP it hurts my soul
Emma and knightley are too cute! I cannot deal with all the feels i have right now!
"Paint a portrait" - again with the very subtle book references. Nice touch
This is a timely episode, seeing as I'm going on a first date tonight.
I have to say, Elton managed to make this a lot less awkward than it really was.
Every episode of this just gets more and more perfect
the last scene just killed me.
Easiest way to describe it- a documentary selfie-style that isn't uploaded to the net. Documenting future greatness.
This adaptions makes me actually like Elton. Is that wrong even though I know what's about to happen?
Oh good, I'm not alone in that...
I love that Emma's matchmaking is her business in this adaption. The stakes feel as high as they must have been meant to feel in the book. Setting up your friends and marriage are much less serious now, but in a business like Emma's in these videos, it's important to keep up a good rate of success and not mess up big accounts like a senator!
senator elton is obviously thirsty emma, and it's not for celery soda (cough cough its you)
0:36 that touch though
product placement is emma approved *wink*
OH SNAP! I own Emma's dress except mine is purple. *proceeds to take it out of the closet to wear tomorrow*
Where'd you get yours? They have a link, but the dress is slightly different.
unfabgirl Mine is a purple "matte jersey dress" from the Lauren by Ralph Lauren collection (you can google image it). I got it at TJ Maxx on sale.
I almost don't want to watch these because of how awkward these are- which means that they're done perfectly! I almost hate having to watch Harriet fall for Elton, which means that they're creating sympathetic and in-depth characters. Well done, Su and Green!
Poor Knightley. He's the only one who sees things like they are.
Why do I love the way Knightley leaves a room so much?
"I hate to see you go, but I LOVE to watch you leave!" ;)
Harriet's "I look weird" is me after EVERY PHOTO.
Awww, the tension between Emma and Knightley at the end :( Alex's face is so expressive ♡
What was up with that end?
It's very clear what's going to happen in a middle-distance future. It's just not exactly clear, how it's going to happen. I'm looking forward to it.
THAT SEXUAL TENSION WHEN SHE WALKS AROUND KNIGHTLEY WITH A BODY TIGHT DRESS AND TOUCHES HIS FACE
Emma looks so stunning! Definitely the prettiest Emma so far in my opinion :)
Oh god you can already see how much James likes Emma aghhhh. And Knightley can obviously see that! This is getting so gooooood
oh knightly is so in love with emmaaaaa
Emma "Captain Oblivious" Woodhouse strikes again! But seriously, I want to edit this Knightley into every Emma adaptation.
ahhhhh the tension between emma and knigthley is making me squeall!!!
I love it when people who havent read the book make guesses at whats going to happen and are actually right, it just means that the writers are doing there job!
Oh no, Elton gave Emma the lip look... And OH GOD ALL THE ALEX/EMMA FEELS. Do we have a ship name for them yet?
I haven't read the book, but I can completely tell that Elton is interested in Emma! Great acting!
Has anyone else ever noticed how insecure Emma is? Because as much as she preaches confidence and stuff like that, one harsh word from Knightly can crush her soul. She puts a LOT of stock into his opinion of her.
And that's why she's acting the injured party here and Knightly is the one trying to get on her good graces.
Kiralay0
That's a good point.

Really great acting, writing, and directing, people!
For anyone struggling with this, I'd recommend starting at the beginning and watching them all one after another. It helped me.
1. Knightly's face as soon as Emma takes her hand away from his cheek
Knightly. *hug*
4. Emma's distress when he leaves. Come on, kids! Get it together!
Love it!!! The Emma/Knightley chemistry is ridiculously good.
Ahhh, I can just feel this series finally hitting its stride. I'm really enjoying the lovely work.
I LOVE this episode. Cheers to the writers for so adeptly modernizing the scene of Emma painting Harriet's portrait while Elton watches and admires. I was wondering how they were going to do it. Very clever!
I like the Senator. I hope he turns out to be a good guy, and that he doesn't get completely screwed by Emma's machinations.
Have you read the book? :-P
I have not. Feel free to judge me. :)
