That’s because mercenaries are usually called contractors. They usually have loyalties to the country that they are from. So they normally don’t just fight for the highest payer.
but but without private armies, how the organizations get some helps when they are in difficulties? hiring private armies is cheaper than hiring national armies…

The Americans didn't start it, mercenaries have been around for thousands of years. Even the word "freelancer" was originally a term for mercenary, Lancers on horseback free from obligation to any nation.
People should also remember that the Geneva Conventions do not apply to mercenaries. They are under international law, open game.

Wow! What a tremendous report! Other channels would have dragged this( if they had the guts to make such a report) and made it into an hour documentary, but not Wion. Kudos to Wion and Palki! Keep up the great work.
I never impressed from all anchors who shout and on other hand, she never shout. she is most talented one and She questions viewer within the flow.
I have seen few American channels make such report. They didn't talk about Turkey in detail like this but they did about America and Russia.

I'm an X Army Ranger with a lot of different skills. When I got out I received a few BIG offers to turn mercenary. Turned them all down but the offers where there.

During the 70's to 90's I was involved on the "fringe of instability" in African, South Amrrica, Cape Verdes, Seychelles and Syria in aviation.....since I 'worked' for private sector people we could be classified as 'Mercenaries' as life was too unstable to call it a career!

The main role of a mercenary force is to engage and keep your enemy occupied and weaken them from within so that your main army can win the war for you. Indian empires like Mauryas & Guptas used to enrol mercenaries. Indian military establishment kindly note.
Most European and American mercenaries is in support role (helicopter mech, communication, logistic etc. etc.). Like in Saudi/SANG. The Saudis can not do anything without the backing of technical staff from EU and USA. As for "grunts" you can hire 20 Pakistani for the same money as 1 American.

One big issue is that they are not held by the rules of legitimate armies/navies, etc. US mercy in the fight in Iraq is that they cared nothing for the Geneva Convention, which forbids mistreatment of prisoners of war. Cheney was claiming water boarding wasn't torture, but the Spanish Inquisition used it on people specifically as torture. Put Cheney where he doesn't know when he can breathe or not, and he would change his tune. They were even used as far back as when Washington moved troops, horses and canons over the Delaware River silently to defeat Hessian mercs hired by the British in the Battle of Trenton when they woke up in the morning. Most of the Crusaders were thugs promised heaven if they fought for the Catholic Church. Of course, they couldn't read the Latin Vulgate and took the work of the Catholic leaders. the Bible never told them to take things from the Middle East, they did it based on lies, and then were tortured by the ing of France who could not legally take the treasures for himself, but had a puppet Pope put in place to torture them so they would give up the stolen riches. Mercenaries were not introduced by Ottomans. If you look deep into history of warfare you'll find them everywhere. Mostly they were used by Christian Kings in 1&2 Crusades. Roman's used them , Alexander used them. Interesting stuff is that most of the times Private soldiers were actually slaves, farmers, poor citizens forced by kingdoms /Lords / Knights/ Nobles / Warlords to fulfill their military objectives.
Achillies was also a mercenary but not slave..

This is definitely one of many reasons why I would never give up my second amendment. I could definitely see our own government using private armies to subjugate the populace. Even though we would be horribly outmatched, I'd rather have some means to defend myself.
I have no problem with small groups of mercenaries. I honestly believe some people who were formerly in the military got burned out. Especially those that fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of their brothers and sisters gave up life and limb for nothing.
Honestly if major powers could keep their mercs clean and only allowed to be used against actors, and only go into conflicts and areas, a lot of the issues with the practice would go away.
This actually helped a lot against piracy off the Somali coast.

Yes, at least when American learned of crimes they tried to resolve things. Russia and a few others get away with anything, even against the very countries they are supposed to be "helping!"
