I've thrown cast nets for a long time and I still prefer a 4 or 5' net. For learning a 4' is perfect. I don't like big nets because they catch too much bait, too many rocks, and they're heavy so they're hard to toss. I can easily throw a 5 or even 6' net without putting it in my mouth and make perfect circles most of the time. But I can't explain my technique, I'd have to show you. It's all about arranging it right and giving it the right spin when you toss it.
I'm 49 and started catching my bait in cast nets when I was 11 or 12 in Florida. And I still have a 4' net in my car at all times with 2 rids, tackle and a bait bucket. Most of the time I use jigs and don't bother with bait, but once in awhile I catch finger mullet or peanut bunker or killifish for bait.
