Hi Andy! I was trouble shooting why my bobbin was being so funky and turns out I’ve been threading the machine wrong for years! Thanks so much for taking the time to demonstrate how to use this machine it’s so hard to find resources on line. Take care :-)
I love how the tension discs are external, it's just so cool to see the working parts of the machine. I'm also so fascinated how much of the top thread is external to the machine! It's so cool to see! I can't wait to try out my 413- my singer promise is being naughty so it's been sent to go sit in the corner
Hmm... another broken promise, eh? The only weak spot on the 413 is the plastic gear on top of the vertical shaft. It's 50+ years only now and gets brittle. A new gear is only about $10 and you can do the replacement yourself. Otherwise, it's a strong, capable machine and with normal care and oiling can last another 50 years easily.
Wow! You're fantastic. So clear. So Helpful. I just purchased a 413 (Made in Great Britain) from my local thrift store. Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge and experience!
Thanks, Bill. I'm glad you found my channel. You got a nice, capable and versatile machine. Thank you for this entire series. I have this machine that I inherited from my Grandma when she passed almost 20 years ago. I now know how to troubleshoot it and can hopefully get it up and running again.
A very nice inheritance. It's a versatile machine and thanks for keeping it. If you do not have the Instruction Manual a PDF copy of the original is available for free from Singer on this support page: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 Happy sewing and thanks for the nice comment.

Hi, I just pulled out my sewing machine just like this one. I had forgotten how to thread it. I have owned 3 or 4 of this same make and model. It is the best sewing machine that I have a tendency to buy over and over again !! Yes, I absolutely love this particular model ! Thank you for posting and showing how to thread this machine. So happy to have found you !! Big Thanks 😊
It is a beautiful model, isn't it? What nice stitching too. If you ever have some issues, like belt changes, timing, or tension, keep my Playlist for model 413 in mind. The videos may be helpful. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html Thanks for the kind comment and happy sewing.
Hello, Andy! I wanna thank you so much for this video! I inherited a singer 418 that belonged to my beloved grandma. I grew up watching her spend days using this machine and creating the most beautiful items of clothing, etc. Now that she is not around anymore, I had no one to remind me of how to work this out. I'm so grateful for your video! So so so helpful. Best wishes! :)
Family machines are just the best to own. I love that you have your grandma's 418. I'll bet that machine could almost sew by itself after all the love she gave it and the creativity she expressed when sewing. I'm happy the video gave you a reminder of setting it up. I know that Instruction Manuals often do not get passed on with a machine, but you can still get one if you need it. They have tons of information and I can just imagine grandma reading thru it and learning how to use the machine to the best of its capabilities. You can download a FREE copy of the Model 418 Instruction Manual from the Singer Support page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=418 God Bless Grandma and you, and happy sewing.
@@andytubesewing1953 thank you so much for your tips and specially for your kind words. It means a lot 💜 I'll download the manual, I'm sure it'll be helpful! Once again, thank you very much ☺️ God bless you!
Welcome. Since the machine is new to you I'd recommend downloading a FREE copy of the Instruction Manual. It's 72-pages all about the machine, how to use it, oil it, use the different feet, etc. You can find it here at Singer: www.singer.com/search/support?title=416
Hi Andy, I am so appreciative of your tutorial. I inherited this sewing machine, and I would not have known how to use it otherwise. Thanks to you, I have a trusty, usable machine with which to create many projects! I use it infrequently enough that I forget details, and have to check back to refresh my memory, so your video is indispensable for me. Thank you!
Hi Andy, your videos are such a godsend. I’m having an issue with the bobbin thread getting caught in the hook or getting caught under the presser plate. And the thread on the bottom of the fabric is too taut. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Congratulations! A sewing machine geek would know there are 55 teeth on the Textolite gear of the Singer Model 404. Think of yourself as more of a VSME (vismee), a Vintage Sewing Machine Enthusiast! Yeh, that's the ticket, and from one VSME to another, it's a beautiful thing. Thanks for watching.
Hi Andy! Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. I've learned more in twenty minutes then I've learned in 5 years, I inherited a Singer Model 413 when I was 8 years old, and I never learned how to use it, now turning 13 I have finally figured it out because of your video, Thanks.
you're welcome and thanks for such a nice comment. you have a very nice machine to learn about sewing with and I hope that you have fun with it and that you'll stop by my channel again when you have time. take care
COngratulations. A worthy machine for home sewing & crafting. I have a playlist of videos for this model that includes maintaining and repairing and oiling it, etc. It may need a good oiling. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html Also, Singer has a very nice 64-page Instruction Manual all about using the machine that you can download for free from their website www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 Happy for you, Brigid, and thanks for watching my channel.
Thank you for refreshing me on this, I own this exact model and have since the 70s. I have never had it serviced until 2020!! It's in the shop now and I get it back in a few days; I was going to buy a new one, but I'll keep this oldie but goodie. I rarely sew, but I do make pillows and craft items once in a while.
I'm glad you found my video. It's great that you have a shop that will work on it. It's a great machine for home sewing and have when when you get it back.
Thank you for your detailed tutorial! I was gifted this machine and I have no idea how to sew - hoping to make good use of this machine ❤️ will be going through your other tutorials step by step!
What a nice gift you received. I'm glad you found the video and there are more of this model number that may be about possible. Good luck and eventual happy sewing!
@@andytubesewing1953 Hi Andy, I have started sewing with the machine and straight stitching absolutely no problems but when I do Zig zag I am getting drop stitches. How do I trouble shoot it? Followed your timing video but everything seems to be right.
@@yxyc87 Yes, the first thing we think of is timing, but other things can affect ZZ stitching. I always replace the needle first. Even a slight bend in the needle can cause it. It can still work for Straight Stitching, but make the "thread loop" out of reach for the ZZ needle position. Also, be sure you are using LESS needle thread tension when you sew ZZ, especially the wider settings. The swinging needle already is putting tension on the thread. Let's say you normally use 3 or 4 for straight, then try 2.5 to 2 for ZZ and even less if needed. There is a slight possibility that the "Stroke" of the take-up spring (check spring) is off. Usually not, but if someone worked on the tension assembly it could be off. Here is a video explaining the Stroke of the take-up spring. th-cam.com/video/t3UqzYRo-cc/w-d-xo.html I don't want you going down rabbit holes, so always check closely any setting before you decide it needs adjusting. I've had a number of viewers tell me they checked timing so then we tried needles, stroke, thread & needle size, different fabrics, etc. Lots of time was spent and nothing fixed it. When I convinced them to at least check the timing one more time very closely they admitted they found it to be off and reset it and all was good. Try a new needle, then look really closely at the timing settings.
Thanks. One of the best videos of setting up a/almost any 70s Singer machine. I have a 507 I inherited from my mother in law, my wife leaves the sewing to me, your video applies pretty much to my machine too. Best wishes from Wales.
Thanks for these videos on the Singer 413 Stylist. I just bought one in a cabinet last week and haven't had time yet to try it out. When I do I'm sure these vids will be of help. The one I bought is in excellent shape, almost like new, I couldn't pass it up.
Congrats on your 413 Singer. I also have a playlist for model 513 which is the next gen of this 413. I have a lot of adjustment videos in the playlist that I will not be showing in this one for the 413. Hi Andy! I’ve just inherited a singer 416 and had no idea why the tension was so bad. Turns out I’d threaded it completely wrong! You’ve been so helpful, thank you so much! ❤️
I'm glad you found the video. It's a very nice model. If you want you can download a free copy of the original Instruction Manual from Singer at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=416 It has 72 pages of instructions for using all the features of the machine, lists of fashion aids that fit the machine, needle size chart, and basic cleaning and oiling instructions (please oil the machine) that can help you get all the benefits of the machine. Happy sewing, Erin.
Your videos are so thorough and helpful! I have watched at least three after finding a 413 at the thrift store, and it has hardly been used! The manual is definitely lacking. When I googled how to oil it, your video came up, and at first I thought “oh no, I’m not watching a 40 minute video!” But I was SO glad I did, and I watched several more of yours, and now my mechanical confidence feels sky high :) Thanks Andy!
Time flies when you're having fun, right? Thank you for watching an commenting on my videos. The 413 is a very capable model. It's only weakness is the plastic gear on top of the vertical shaft breaks sooner or later ( 50 years old soon) I hope yours has many more years to go but if it cracks keep this video in mind b/c you can replace the gear for about $10. th-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/w-d-xo.html (yes, you can do it!) Best of luck, and take care.
Thank you for this video andy! i just bought a second hand sewing machine and its pretty old. i am new in sewing and most sewing videos now have a new machine which im having a hard time following..your video is the most helpful for me! thank you for sharing! i hope you are well and good!
Thanks for the nice comment, Shelia. You don't mention if you have 413 model or another, but either way, I recommend reading the instruction manual that Singer made (if you have a Singer machine) The manuals a nicely done and contain a lot of useful information about using the machine and it's attachments and caring and oiling of the machine. Oh my gosh Andy, if I had a nickel for every time I have watched all/part of a video of yours I would have a jar full! This one I have come back to for a 418 I got for $40 a year or three ago. The tensioner is giving me some irritating issues AND I could not remember where to put the thread between three disks. Andy to the rescue, as always! Thinking of you, nice up here right now, August 2, 2:25 pm and it is only 83°! Wish I could send you some…. 💜🌞💜 Jonee
Oh, man! I have not felt 63 in a long time. At 3PM today it was 110 here.🔥 So tired of it, haha. I love that you are still finding my videos helpful. I think this tension assembly is the same as you have on the 418: th-cam.com/video/PSCY72bJ3x8/w-d-xo.html Stall cool, and God Bless.
@@andytubesewing1953 Well, today promises to be hotter - 98° and huuuumid. Yuck! That tension assembly appears to be exactly the same, thank you for saving me once again. Stitchin’ on the corner in Winslow 🎶🎸🎶 Thinking of you, Andy.
Great, then you can buy which ever one you like! So many good ones to choose from, like the 403A Special: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg.html
Andy, at 15:00, when you attempt to move the thread from left to right, to get into that "eye", have you tried holding the thread top & bottom, and guiding it from right to left...it seems like I remember threading it like that on the 457 that I learned how to sew on...rather than manually "poking the thread" through that eye... try it, and see if it works ...thanks, Shari
I wonder where you did read that. It's a good tip 👍. I'll try it next time I have a machine with that wire thread guide on the front of the nose cover. It is odd that the 413 manual does not show the nose cover having that wire guide. The thread guide is around on the side and down low, haha. The 457 manual does show the wire thread guide on the front of the nose cover, but the instructions do not mention the threading method you describe. Holding the thread above and below for tension and moving it into the guide from the left would work great. I can almost hear the little "ping" as the thread snaps in. Thanks for commenting and sharing on my channel, Shari, take care.
I'm glad you found the video then, and thanks for letting me know it helped. Stop by again if you have time. I have a short playlist of videos about maintaining and repairing the 413 model if you ever need them: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html
I bought this sewing machine today attached to a table. I'm new at sewing and your channel is exactly what I need. 2 videos and I'm ready to start sewing! Thank you so much, I still need to watch the other Singer 413 machine. Should I get someone to tune the machine and clean it from the inside, since it wasn't in use for a long time...?
If you have a trusted sewing technician who charges reasonable rates then yes, have him/her do some cleaning and oiling. You can maintain the machine yourself if you like. My other videos for model 413 include cleaning and setting the tension, replacing worn belts if needed and how to oil the machine. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html Those are the basic areas that can need attention on a vintage machine. You can do that. If the needle bar is dirty, just clean it with some alcohol and a rag. Brush out the nose end and around the tension unit and the bobbin and feed dog area to get any old lint out. Use canned air to blow it out if needed. Follow my oiling video and wipe off any old oil you can and put new, fresh oil. If the motor belt is cracking you can replace it just follow the video. If you have tension issues it may just be a dirty unit so clean it by brushing/ blowing out lint and clean with alcohol if needed. Timing belts last a long, long time so it is usually serviceable and OK to use. You can download a FREE copy of the Instruction Manual from SInger at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 It will show how to remove the bobbin case for cleaning. Keeping the machine clean and oiled it the most important for good sewing and long life. Happy sewing, Tali. I'm glad you found my channel.
I have 4 sewing machines, all inherited from family, a Minnesota treadle machine from my grandma, a 1950's Keystone and the 1970's Singer stylist from my mom, and a 1930's (?) Singer Featherweight 221 from my aunt. During these days of "sheltering in home", I'm cleaning, oiling, and trying to sew on them all. THANK YOU again for your videos and for sharing your knowledge.
Kind of you to let me know, Nola. A very nice collection of machines you have there. For your two Singer models you can download FREE copies of the Singer Instruction Manuals from Singer at this link, just enter the model number into the search box: www.singer.com/support The manuals include section for oiling and maintenance. It is in a few Singer models from that period and known to dry out and crack. Here is a video I made for replacing the gear on one of the machines. It will show you what to look for: th-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/w-d-xo.html Hopefully the gear on your machine is fine but if not you have a resource for help. Thanks for watching my channel and good luck.
Thank you for responding. I'm going to binge watch your channel in my spare time. I did find a TH-cam channel devoted to featherweight, and I followed a video to show me how to oil all 31 spots! Thanks again.

Hi I just bought this machine everything in a cabinet I know how to do everything to get ready to see but noticed I need the class 66 bobbin I watched your last video about sliding the black lever over before inserting the bobbin Mine does not have that feature just a chrome plate But what I have noticed is watching your bobbin case spin even without a bobbin in it I Cannot seem to get mine to move at all I’m hoping once the bobbin is in maybe that effect to move and grab the threaded needle will happen Or this might be something that needs fixing somehow
Hi, S. Sounds like a few things going on with your machine. So I think you mean the hook does not turn and won't snag the needle thread, among other problems. Since a non-moving hook is a critical problem, let's work on that first. The hook is turned by a timing belt on the bottom of the machine. The belt is turned by pulleys, and the pulley on the right is the "power" pulley that is on the end of a shaft that goes up to the top of the machine. Up on the top that shaft has a plastic gear that is known to break and even crumble to pieces. If that is the case you have to replace that gear. Here is a video about how to do that. It is a different model, and the machine is slightly different, but even the gear part number is the same. By watching the video, or some of it, you can see where the gear is and take a look at it and determine if it is broken. Of course, a big clue is the pulley and belt is not turning on the bottom. You can then decide if you want to replace the gear. Here is the link to the video: th-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/w-d-xo.html Good Luck, S.
Andy Tube Thanks so much !! Great help I will check that out !!! Thanks again. Andy I paid 10 bucks for it and it’s in great shape with the cabinet I hope it’s worth fixing
Very good question, Rachel. Model 413 uses class 66 bobbins part No. 172336, which means the plastic bobbin, as shown in the original Singer Parts diagram. (Class 66 bobbins have curved sides.) www.google.com/search?q=singer+bobbin+172336&oq=singer+bobbin+172336&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60.8391j1j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Model 9960 uses class 15 bobbins. Part No. HP30222.The ones with flat sides. Vendors show plastic and metal under that part number. Singer has a page that TRIES to explain their different bobbins. Look here >> www.singer.com/sewing-resources/complete-bobbin-guide
@@andytubesewing1953 Thanks for responding so quickly. The 413 I rescued from the garbage is being serviced right now. I'll be sure to buy the right bobbins. I have been using 15s with my 9960 but the clicking noise I get is caused by using the wrong ones according to the person who just serviced that machine. Not sure I believe her though.
@@rachelgreen4626 Could be. There are a couple 3 different types of class 15 bobbins (I don't use any, but have read that) Thank you very much for rescuing the 413. It is a worthy machine and deserves to have a good sewist like you to take care of it. Thanks for the feedback.
I'm so glad I found your video because I inherited this machine and have misplaced the manual. I thought I had everything threaded correctly (I'm assuming I don't) but after bringing up the bobbin thread and getting ready to sew nothing moves when I press the pedal
Oops! Nothing, like even the handwheel does not turn? BTW, you can download a free copy of the original Instruction Manual for this model directly from Singer in PDF format at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 I'll look up my own records while waiting for your answer.
Yes, and I apologize. Mea Culpa. That is the only thread I had on hand, sorry. How about a FREE Singer Instruction Manual for the 413? www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20413%20Stylist%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf Pages 11 thru 15 show winding the bobbin and needle. It totals 64 pages and has tons of information about the machine.
Wow. Love your videos. Thanks for taking the time to do them. I have this machine, (and 6 others) and haven't used it in awhile. I wonder if you could give me some insight on which vintage machine is best for heavy duty sewing, like several layers of cotton. I am making masks and my Viking Rose, and featherweight are not quite 'heavy duty' enough for pleats. Thanks so much!
Your 413 can sew layers, but if you want something stronger then I like the 403A if yu want ZZ or the 404 if you only need straight stitch. I probably have 100 videos of those two models on my playlist pages: th-cam.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists?view_as=public Here is an in-depth comparison video: th-cam.com/video/Nee9PavxWhs/w-d-xo.html Other straight stitch HD models: 15, 66, & 201 if you want the heavier Iron Horse models.
Hi Andy, my new belt came in today, and I was able to install and get machine to run. I think it still needs to get some old lube out though, the motor spins nice and fast for bobbin winding, but slows down and needs help starting. Question I have is for the bobbin winder selector knob, ours was missing, we can manage without, but would prefer finding one. Do you have an idea for a source? Threading machine, what surprised me was the little horizontal slice in the needle clamp., I don't have a lot of experience, but that was a first for me.
That selector knob is not even shown in the parts diagram so I can't give you a part number. It is a part of the arm cover. No one will be making new ones any longer so you need to find an online seller who is parting out a machine. Connie has the complete arm cover for $20 if it is worth that to you www.thriftyfarmgirl.com/shop/singer-413-stylist-parts That's not something a seller would usually sell by itself; no market for it and not enough profit, ao it would be included with the arm cover when sold. As to the binding of the motor running, there are a lot of causes for that. If the timing belt is too tight, if the worm gear on the vertical shaft is too tight against the gear on the bottom of the cam stack, If the takeup lever is bent a little, etc. Oiling as per the instruction manual is always required.
@@andytubesewing1953 Thanks for Connies link, I ordered the top cover, needed the spool pin as well. Trying to make the machine as complete as I can. I followed one of your tips on letting machine run in for 5 minutes to work in the lubrication, that helped a lot. I'll check that the top gear is not too tight against the other one. The pulley I had ordered recently split. Not sure why, but popped apart. However, it had arrived with no through hole, it was solid on one end so it only went partway onto shaft, the old pulley had a thru hole. I use a drill bit to create the hole. Maybe that stresses it? Have new pulley on order now.
1539 is the needle thread tension assembly on the front of the machine. Is that what you are asking about, Simon? What is the model number of your machine?
no it was the little hook on the face plate, mine was on the front under the tension wheel. same model as yours btw: 413 stylist, thanks for replying so fast btw! really appreciate it! @@andytubesewing1953
@@simonfraser3332 It turns out that MY 413 is the weird one 😲I've verified that your 413 has the correct setup. The sister machines, 416 & 418 have the wire guide on the faceplate. I guess someone put a 416/418 faceplate onto my 413 model. The actual faceplate (which can be called a nose cover also) is the same type and size on all three models, but only the 413 has the thread guide on the bottom of the nose. I also looked up documents for the next generation, models 513, 514, 518, 533, & 538 and they all have that style you have. No idea why the 416 & 418 have the wire guide, although a few earlier Singer models use that setup also. I sure wish the machine could talk. I just got a 413 in cabinet, and it looks like the little black gear on top of the vertical shaft is stripped, so no movement of the hook. Any idea where to get a service manunal? I see the gear is being sold at numerous places.
As far as I know, there is no separate Service Manual for model 413. I believe the SInger Techs used the 416-418 manual. The 413 was the lower-end version. You can buy the 416-418 manual here: manualsoncd.com/product/singer-416-418-sewing-machine-service-manual/ but it does not show how to replace the gear. I have a few videos for model 413 for other maintenance: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html Also, I have a video about gear replacement on a 457K: th-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/w-d-xo.html and for the 466: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKJTjJ3dRTrDPtIqR6DMoaex.html Those videos may give you some ideas about how to go about it and how to get access, etc. The Gear is SInger Part #155819 a very common part across several models. The original factory gear was white, so if you have a broken black gear it is an after-market replacement gear that has also failed. I found most black gears to be of lesser quality than new white gears, but maybe they are better now. I'd still prefer a white one though.
@@andytubesewing1953 Wow, thank you! It looks like the 413 is from the same series as the 457 and uses the same vertical gear. Will watch that video now! 👍👍 Would you still recommend getting a white gear? Any preferred source for it?
@@andytubesewing1953 Thanks to your good instructions my 413 now has a new gear and is working fine! 👍👍 The noisiest part of the machine is an intermittent rattling from the nylon sleeve riding on the eccentric shaft in the tensioner. I think mine is a light turquoise color.I bought it because I thought I could cannibalize the parts for my 401A and my Touch And sew, but you said the machines were totally different. .Summer is not a good time to work on machines, much too busy. Looking forward to tackling the 401 again in the Fall. I’ve gathered all the things I need to finish the machine. I’ve decided to clean the top section without removing all the parts, which you advise would be the best thing to do.
Hi Dorothy. I have three playlists that may help you with the 401A. They cover work I did on the 403A, 404 and 503A. I'll list them here and you can look at the playlists and pick different videos to watch. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKIB4kvIHCfHYuyLMUp5A4UI.html th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKInZUROdMNIGGO_nfhM2u6D.html th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKJZaZn2zl3LsnV2d7UhrqvX.html Anyone can download a FREE copy of Singer's Service Manual for the Model 401A here: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf It has 45 pages of adjustment, remove and replace instructions. If you removed something from the nose end and it destabilized the whole cam section I'm thinking you removed the needle bar driving arm. The Service Manual will explain that, and I made videos in the playlists of the model 503A. Here is the main page listing all my playlists by model number: th-cam.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists?view_as=subscriber
So the machine is new to you? Please be sure the machine is in sewing mode, and not bobbin winding mode. Next, be sure the hook is rotating when you turn the handwheel. The hook is the part that holds the bobbin case in place and turns counterclockwise when you turn the handwheel. If the hook DOES turn but won't pull up the bobbin thread then the hook may be out of time. Here is a video for your model that shows how to check and set the timing: th-cam.com/video/pANycD90wQg/w-d-xo.html Going back to the hook rotating thing... if the hook DOES NOT turn then you probably have a broken plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft. This is a very common problem due to the age of the machine. A new gear costs about $10 and you can do the work yourself if you are willing. I have a detailed video about replacing it. The video is for model 457, but the principles and most of the parts are the same or similar to your 413. You can see the video here if needed: th-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/w-d-xo.html (watch at 1.5 speed and see the timeline below video for the start times of the different steps.) There could be a couple other reasons for your bobbin thread not coming up like you put the bobbin in backward, the needle in backward, threaded the needle backward or the needle is not completely inserted up into the needle clamp. Since your name is "Creative" I'm assuming you did all that properly so the timing and the gear are the most common physical problems that cause the bobbin thread situation. You can fix this, and change your name to Creative 1 2 3 ✨ Good Luck.
I think you are talking about the Pressure Dial that regulates pressure on the presser foot to hold fabric against the needle plate. Page 18 on the Instruction Manual. FREE manual here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=513
If you threaded the needle and bobbin case properly and can't pull it up then the machine may be out of timing. That is how the needlepoint and hook point line up when the needle is starting upwards. Here is a playlist of my videos for this model: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html One of the videos is about the timing: th-cam.com/video/pANycD90wQg/w-d-xo.html You can check the timing without making adjustments just to see if it is set OK. The other possibility is the plastic gear on the top of the verticle shaft is breaking apart and not turning the timing belt properly or at all. The gear can be replaced if needed.
I was sewing and my bobin got messed up so I took it out and realized my bobin area looks completely different from yours. I'm at a loss on how to put the bobin in
The machine in the video is a Singer Model 413. Are you sure your machine is a Singer Model 413? Because all model 413 machines have a bobbin/hook system the same as in the video.
@@andytubesewing1953 yes. It says "zig-zag model 413" under the stich control nob. I found a video for an even older model and it was the same as the bobbin in mine. I fixed my bobbin. The bobbin area and one of the thread guides is the only differences between the machines.
@@jellofish1455 How odd, but I'm happy you were able to fix your bobbin 😊 If you'd like a copy of the Instruction Manual it is available free from the SInger Support page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413 Happy sewing.
uh-oh. ☹If you are confident you threaded the machine properly then it may be a timing issue. Timing can go out from the needle hitting the needle plate ( needle strike ) and moving the needle bar up or even a worn gear on the top of the vertical shaft. Here is a Playlist of videos for Model 413: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html One of the videos shows how to check and/or reset the timing: th-cam.com/video/pANycD90wQg/w-d-xo.html You could watch that to check if the timing is OK or not. If the top gear is worn, damaged, or completely broken then the HOOK may not be turning properly or even not turning at all. It is easy to remove the bobbin and watch the hook as you turn the handwheel towards you (counterclockwise) If the hook is NOT turning the gear is probably broken. I do not have a video for replacing the gear on model 413 but this Playlist for model 466 shows how to replace the gear and the machine parts are similar and could help. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKJTjJ3dRTrDPtIqR6DMoaex.html
I'd like to try and help you but your statement is not clear. I don't know if you mean the motor doesn't run or the needle doesn't go up and down or a detail like that
A coincidence? Maybe it's a good sign. The correct bobbin is a SInger Class 66, plastic or metal if you prefer. If you use a Class 15 bobbin with the flat sides it will catch the thread and tangle into a nest very quickly. If that is not the cause, let me know a little more info and I'll try to help.
@@andytubesewing1953 great thanks so much Andy..i thing this is a class 15 steel bobbin..i'll try the class 66..an yes it was getting tangled up🤨..all the best!
@@PhilipRawbon-rk8uv I have videos for that on a 413. Here is the Playlist of videos for Model 413K th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html One of those videos is for checking/setting the hook to needle timing: th-cam.com/video/pANycD90wQg/w-d-xo.html
Hi Andy! I was trouble shooting why my bobbin was being so funky and turns out I’ve been threading the machine wrong for years! Thanks so much for taking the time to demonstrate how to use this machine it’s so hard to find resources on line. Take care :-)
Oh, man! That must have been super frustrating. Glad you found this video them. Smooth sewing ahead now, and Happy New Year.
Thank you so much, the machine standing for so long from my grandmother, I never use to with..
God bless you Ser..
Thank you and happy sewing!

@@andytubesewing1953 Yes, it is. Thank you ever so much for offering your services ❤ 😊 Much Appreciated.

Thank you!
Welcome, Sara. I appreciate your comment and thanks for keeping my channel in mind. Happy sewing in the New Year.
Hi Andy, your videos are such a godsend. I’m having an issue with the bobbin thread getting caught in the hook or getting caught under the presser plate. And the thread on the bottom of the fabric is too taut. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Great video, Andy! I think I'm officially a sewing machine geek now, as I watch videos how to thread machines I don't even own, lol!

Here is a video explaining the Stroke of the take-up spring. th-cam.com/video/t3UqzYRo-cc/w-d-xo.html
I don't want you going down rabbit holes, so always check closely any setting before you decide it needs adjusting.
Thanks for the video!! My used machine has been sitting idle for years but now I've got some time and this video totally helped.
Great to hear! Thank you.

Your videos are so thorough and helpful! I have watched at least three after finding a 413 at the thrift store, and it has hardly been used! The manual is definitely lacking. You are awesome!!!!!!
I'm blushing right now. Thank you very much.
You are a life saver good sir

You can download a FREE copy of the Instruction Manual from SInger at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413

Hi I just bought this machine everything in a cabinet
I know how to do everything to get ready to see but noticed I need the class 66 bobbin
I watched your last video about sliding the black lever over before inserting the bobbin
Mine does not have that feature just a chrome plate
But what I have noticed is watching your bobbin case spin even without a bobbin in it
I Cannot seem to get mine to move at all
I’m hoping once the bobbin is in maybe that effect to move and grab the threaded needle will happen
Or this might be something that needs fixing somehow
Here is the link to the video: th-cam.com/video/M3bFtlV1Y6s/w-d-xo.html
Good Luck, S.
Andy Tube
Thanks so much !! Great help I will check that out !!!
Thanks again. Andy
I paid 10 bucks for it and it’s in great shape with the cabinet I hope it’s worth fixing
@@Sharonb777 If it is the gear you can buy a new one for around $10.
I'm confused about bobbin size. I have 2 Stylists - 413 and 9960. What bobbin sizes should I be using for each? Thanks for your great videos.
Very good question, Rachel. Model 413 uses class 66 bobbins part No. 172336, which means the plastic bobbin, as shown in the original Singer Parts diagram. (Class 66 bobbins have curved sides.) www.google.com/search?q=singer+bobbin+172336&oq=singer+bobbin+172336&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60.8391j1j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Model 9960 uses class 15 bobbins.
Thank you so much!
You are welcome and happy sewing
I seen some videos on other machines but not for this specific one I'm tryna get the tension knob tension correct
Here is how to work on the needle thread tension assembly for your model 413
Thank you 😊
Welcome 👍
the best tutorial
I'm glad you like it Herbert and it was kind of you to comment.
BTW, you can download a free copy of the original Instruction Manual for this model directly from Singer in PDF format at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413
I'll look up my own records while waiting for your answer.
Can you use colored thread?? It's hard to see the white thread
Yes, and I apologize. Mea Culpa. That is the only thread I had on hand, sorry. How about a FREE Singer Instruction Manual for the 413?

Pages 11 thru 15 show winding the bobbin and needle.
I probably have 100 videos of those two models on my playlist pages: th-cam.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists?view_as=public Here is an in-depth comparison video: th-cam.com/video/Nee9PavxWhs/w-d-xo.html
Other straight stitch HD models: 15, 66, & 201 if you want the heavier Iron Horse models.
@@andytubesewing1953 Bought it and installed. Thanks. Now to figure out the birds nest.
15:39 this was at the side of the machine for me! ...wierd //or is mine just missing a peice?//
Thank you for an interesting question, Simon, and for watching my channel.
oh my gosh! that's so cool! thank you for the reply! :D @@andytubesewing1953
also if you don't mind me asking another question, I've noticed the presser diel and stop diel wont budge, you know any way to fix this? thanks in advance
Would you still recommend getting a white gear? Any preferred source for it?

@@andytubesewing1953 Thanks to your good instructions my 413 now has a new gear and is working fine! 👍👍
The noisiest part of the machine is an intermittent rattling from the nylon sleeve riding on the eccentric shaft in the tensioner. What do you think of greasing in between the sleeve and shaft to lessen it?
Hi Andy, I hope you’re having a great summer. Thanks for Another great video.I have a 415 style which is similar to this one.
Andy , You made a video that showed how to restore the machine but not take all the parts out of the bottom and top section of the machine. Could you please tell me which video that was? When I Removed all the parts from the nose section of the 401A It destabilized the whole section with the cams when I remove that long wire. I’ve decided to clean the top section without removing all the parts, which you advise would be the best thing to do.
Hi Dorothy. I have three playlists that may help you with the 401A. They cover work I did on the 403A, 404 and 503A. I'll list them here and you can look at the playlists and pick different videos to watch. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKIB4kvIHCfHYuyLMUp5A4UI.html

Anyone can download a FREE copy of Singer's Service Manual for the Model 401A here: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf
It has 45 pages of adjustment, remove and replace instructions.
My bobbin thread doesn't feed through to catch hold for me to pull both threads towards the back. What should I do? I have a Singer Stylist Model 413.
What is the top knob on the left of stylist 513 for
I think you are talking about the Pressure Dial that regulates pressure on the presser foot to hold fabric against the needle plate. Page 18 on the Instruction Manual. FREE manual here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=513
My needle won’t pull up my bobbin thread, what am I doing wrong ?😩
If you threaded the needle and bobbin case properly and can't pull it up then the machine may be out of timing. That is how the needlepoint and hook point line up when the needle is starting upwards. Here is a playlist of my videos for this model: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKVlkxPT9FMTdvUUGj8Ydf8.html One of the videos is about the timing:
th-cam.com/video/pANycD90wQg/w-d-xo.html You can check the timing without making adjustments just to see if it is set OK.
@@jellofish1455 How odd, but I'm happy you were able to fix your bobbin 😊 If you'd like a copy of the Instruction Manual it is available free from the SInger Support page here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=413
Happy sewing.
ANDY HELP MY THREADS WONT JOIN WHEN I LOWER THE NEEDLE

413 likes..huh..thats the model i have Andy..but having trouble with the bobin set up...think its the wrong bobin for this machine
