      This sewing machine is a family gem as my maternal grandmother sewed and helped the whole family for over 50 years and it is working very well today. If you want, I could send you photos, the cabinet, unfortunately, is not original, as this Singer was stationary for a long time, the termites ate all the wood.

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How sad about termites, but family gems are still wonderful :)
      You are welcome to send photos if you like. In my channel "about" page is a link for email. It says for business inquiries, but it is my regular address.
      I hope the suggestion I wrote for the part is accurate for you.

    I wanted to type a note thanking you for your very easy to understand instructions on your Singer 15. My mum has the very same model and the cabinet looks the same also. She brought it from London with her when she came to Canada in 1947. She sewed endlessly on it . She passed away in 2013 and it got left to me as neither of my sisters wanted it. I am a retired mechanic and love all things mechanical. I took it apart washing all the mechanical bits and re oiled it. I watched your video to learn how to thread it and set the tension . I bought some new needles and thread for denim . I am happy to report that after following your tutorial, I was able to sew hems on my new blue jeans ! I was pretty happy . So thanks again for all your help .😀

    Thank you so much for sharing your sewing machine and going through the manual! I have been dreaming of getting and using a vintage or antique Singer sewing machine, but as I am so new to sewing, I am quite intimidated! However, seeing you walk through this gives me some confidence that my dream might be possible!

      You're more than welcome!
      Two things that I love most about these older machines are the logic and straight-forward mechanical principles. They're really NOT difficult to figure out.
      If at all possible and if you have the space, I would suggest a treadle. The early electrical machines are just as strong, but what you gain in speed and a reverseable feed, you lose in control.
      I hope to one day do a tutorial series following the Singer Art Embroidery book - stunning pieces, all created one stitch at a time with a very controlled treadle (not full-speed like modern machines).
      In the meantime, more operational videos will follow - so watch this space!
      Happy to offer whatever assistance I can, just let me know.

      Trust me as long as there is nothing seriously broken, day underneath 24wahington will give you all the advice you need to get your machine up and running again. I The threading of the two bobbins looks the hardest but this kind lady pauses and goes over most of the threading procedure twice over. I’m a bloke so if I can do it I’m pretty sure you can two. I am no sewer and don’t think I will ever be. I just wanted to bring this beautiful old machine back to life and with the help of 24 Washington a small can of machine oil and two reels of cotton my Singer looks just great all prepared for use. If any one asks me I can tell them the difference between the feed dogs and the tensioner! Go and give it a try. I must admit fitting the new treadle drive belt took three attempts. So very easy if you first place it around each drive wheel pull as tight as you can before cutting to size. When I fixed the first two attempts I treadles away but noticed the belt was stationary as it wasn’t tight enough for the wheels to make contact! 3rd time lucky and now it works perfect and looks so elegant. A little bit of history rescued from eventually ending up in a scrap metal merchants or a tip. Good luck and take care and please wear a mask when you are out amongst the masses. Bye for now Barry

      @24Washington  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello :)
      Do you know what model your machine is? There were several types available in 1911. The serial number can be used to identify the model at ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/serial-numbers/singer-sewing-machine-serial-number-database.html
      Once you know the model, you can find the correct manual.
      Leather treadle sewing machine belts and sewing machine oil (it is best to use specific sewing machine oil) can be purchased easily online in a number of countries. Please let me know if you have trouble finding a seller and I can try to help.

    Thank you for the video. Can you do different stitches (zigzag, stretch, etc.) on this type of sewing machine or can you only adjust the stitch length?

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Singer made zig-zag attachments for these straight-stitch machines.
      In contrast to modern machines where the fabric stays in place and the needle zig-zags, the attachments for these older machines work by shifting the fabric from side to side.
      As far as stretch/compression goes, the short answer is no. You can, however, adjust the amount of downward pressure on the fabric, which does allow you to control the amount of fabric passing under the foot to some degree.

  • @shalocs1
    @shalocs1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you adjust tension issues

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally speaking, tension will be adjusted with the upper tension dial (see at timestamp 06:17).
      Turn clockwise to tighten and and anti-clockwise to loosen.
      If your top thread is making loops underneath, you need to tighten. If the top thread is completely tight/straight, you need to loosen.
      I linked to my manual in the description. There is a section on tension adjustment if you would like a direct reference.

      Hello.
      Singer sewing machines like this will have to be purchased used, as they do not make heavy cast iron machines any more.
      There is a company in India which makes a similar machine for sale. Perhaps if you search on the Internet for "Cast iron sewing machine" or if you want foot-powered, "cast iron treadle sewing machine".

    Excellent, I have inherited a fold away Singer treadle machine and considering learning to use it, potentially for stitching classic car seats amongst other things. At the moment I don't have a clue , so a new adventure in retirement. The machine is mint as it is a fold away, only the wood needs some TLC and maybe a bit of varnish.

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What a wonderful adventure awaits you! And such a marvelous idea to work on classic car seats!
      Your machine will most definitely make it through a single layer of leather or vinyl to top stitch or emboss.
      If it struggles with two layers, you can always look into getting a heavier duty Singer 31-15. I have a treadle model one of these, too, and it will feed a more sturdy upholstery thickness thread and power through thicker materials.
      Best of luck, and I wish you a very happy retirement.

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  ปีที่แล้ว

      The first thing to try is to completely remove the top and bottom threads, and start again. When you thread the needle, make sure you go the correct way. For some machines it is left to right, for others it is right to left.
      Also, make sure the needle is not backwards. The long groove on the side of the needle must be facing the correct way.
      Often making a correction to these areas will allow the stitch to form properly.

      I hope this isn't patronising (it's always impossible to judge what people know), but make sure the belt goes all the way from the lower fly wheel (attached to the pedal) up to the balance wheel on the machine itself.
      When this is connected, your feet will be able to operate the machine.
      Start with your hand turning the balance wheel towards yourself, and then let your feet take over.
      Practice without the machine being threaded, because there's a knack to it that can take time to acquire.

      @@24Washington not patronizing at all (i didn't actually know what those parts were)! thank you! However I think there is something wrong with the motor as the belt looks fine (though i think it is different from your machine) and there is a light that is not turning on.

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh. You have a motorized version.
      Ok. There are a few different configurations of motors.
      If you're sure that the machine worked for your friend, then it sounds like either something got jostled loose during the transfer, or something isn't plugged in all the way.
      The cable for the light bypasses the motor, so it can turn on as long as the power cable is connected.
      You've checked the bulb and if the light has a switch of its own?
      The motor is powered by pressing either a foot pedal or knee lever.
      I wish I could give you hands-on support to solve this mystery, because it's totally my thing ...
      but sadly, I think I've shared all I can from a distance.
      Do you have the manual? If not, if you provide the serial number, I'd be happy to look it up and see what can be found.
      Sorry I can't better assist.

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  ปีที่แล้ว

      The first thing I would do would be to completely remove the threads, and re-thread the machine.
      Make sure that the needle is inserted the correct way and threaded correctly. Sometimes it's front-to-back, left-to-right, or right-to-left. You will need to check.
      It is unlikely that there is anything out with the mechanical timing/synchronization, as it was working so recently.
      I would try the threading possibilities first.
      Good luck!

      The machines I have used on my channel are "lock stitch" machines. Their stitches are made by the top and bottom strings looping over one another.
      With these machines, it is not possible to use only one string.
      If you get a chain stitch machine, this will use only one string.

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My machines have always been found locally - by keeping an eye out for newspaper listings, or online classifieds.
      The one featured in this video was acquired when I was living in London, England, and found through the "Loot" paper.
      Since living in the US, I have found machines through Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, and even eBay local.
      You can look up the serial number plate online to get an idea on exactly when it was made, but it's really important to test the machine to make sure that everything functions smoothly.
      Rusted internal components can be an absolute nightmare, and often require far more effort to correct than the machine is worth.
      Good luck with your search!

    This video was so helpful! I wonder if you might be able to help me? When I disengage the needle the treadle runs like butter, but when I engage it the belt stops spinning and I can’t make it work. Do you know what might be causing thing?

    • @24Washington
      @24Washington  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hopefully I'm understanding you correctly.
      But just to clarify :
      The treadle, wheel, belt portion machine runs smoothly... But if you engage the actual sewing mechanisms, everything is either slow or completely immovable?
      At best, it means that your machine head needs some TLC and oil.
      At worst, something could be seized or bent.
      Let's hope for the first.
      You're going to want to slip the belt entirely off of the fly wheel so that you can tip the head back.
      You'll also want to remove the upright plate from the left side (where the needle goes up and down) and the round one at the back.
      Check the machine for any accumulated dust or fibers - especially at the places where you see joins in the mechanics. Use a smaller paintbrush or old toothbrush to dislodge it.
      Don't forget to tip the machine head back and do the same underneath.
      Before proceeding with this next part, please be very very careful not to get anything onto your decals.
      These suggestions are only for the metal working parts.
      If you can get ahold of some kerosene, it will make the job easier. Kerosene is excellent for thinning any old oil that may have dried (old oil can be as bad as glue). You can also use other lightweight oils (I believe gun oil often contains kerosene, and there are penetrating oils like Kroil, too. Just be very, very careful to avoid your decals.
      If you cannot get these, you can use regular sewing machine oil.
      You can use a dropper or fine-tipped dispenser for more accuracy, but in short, you want to get oil in all of the joins - sides, back, and underneath
      Use the oil port holes on the top of the machine as well.
      If the machine can turn just slightly by hand, you will see where all of the movement takes place. Don't force it - just a small movement back and forth will show you.
      Allow it to rest for a few hours and wipe away any oil that you can see. Repeat the process, and hopefully it will start to turn more easily.
      If this does not help, there may be a mechanical issue, but they can take time time to identify.
      I hope this helps. Good luck! :)

    • @24Washington

      My machine has never been connected to a motor, but many were made with one.
      Personally, I prefer the control attainable with a treadle, but some people, especially those doing long seams or hems, appreciate the faster speeds a motor can deliver.
      However you decide to do it, it's not difficult to connect. The receiving thread for the motor mounting screw is almost certainly already on the machine, on the right side below the wheel.

    My grandmother died 13 years ago. I inherited a machine almost identical to this, but never took it since it reminded my grandfather of her. Sadly, because this year is just the worst, he died last week. I'm having a family member help me get it from his house sometime in the next month. There is no way this will fit in my hatchback so I'm going to have to borrow a truck. Apparently the table got wet at some point so I have to do a small amount of restoration. Luckily I think it's just the wood so it's an easy fix.

      @24Washington  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, how awful. I'm so, so sorry for your losses :(
      There are small screws under the machine that will allow you to remove the heavy cast iron head.
      Make sure the belt is loose, tilt the head back, and you'll see the flat screw heads. Once they're loose, the entire head will lift off of the two hinge pin and you can fit that in the foot well of your car.

As a child of the 60s I well remember that the factories of most towns and cities were 99% filled with women using the machines and the other one percent were warehouse/ drivers and of course the over lookers were males cracking the whip if you weren’t keeping up with demand. I've inherit a similar sewing machine from my granny, just discovered it was manufactured in 1916, unfortunately don't have the manual, cause she bought used in the 40's and I'm trying to learn how to use. Your video was super helpful, thank you so much for sharing! ♥ (Now I just need to have some coordenation to move my hands and feet ate the same time and pace LOL)

    Mary, will I be able to find a new treadle sewing machine like yours that's not electric, the power goes out so much here in Salasala that I don't want to stop sewing in the middle of my project?
