My 180 Gallon Vivarium is Taking Shape

  • Let's set up the all new 180 gallon vivarium! I believe that I said previously it was 190 gallons... not sure where that came from, but it's definitely 180. If you remember I just recently took down my old 125 gallon vivarium and this is its replacement. I think that it turned out great, but it's an unfinished canvas. There's still so much work to be done. Regardless, I wanted to share my progress thus far.
Since I've explained most of the things I've done in this video before, I wanted to take a different approach for this demonstration. I thought that it might be helpful to give more insight on how I make aesthetic decisions (placing plants, hardscape, etc). I didn't want to bore you, so I did my best to keep it at a minimum... I know, I can get quite “ranty” about it!
I also want to circle back to something I talked about in the video, that I may not have elaborated on well enough. Originally I had two lights in the enclosure, an LED shop light and a CFL heat lamp. I accidentally left both lights on for the first day and I quickly realized that the plants were getting cooked! So any acclimation issues with the plants happened in less than 24 hours! Everything has been fine since then, but unfortunately I lost a few plants and others took a beating (ficus pumila and anubias). However, they are already showing off a lot of new growth. I'm sure the change in humidity (70% to 95%+) took its tool as well.
Anyways, after I removed the light and added some more ventilation holes (I will show those in a different video), everything has been great. I was pretty bummed about all of this, but I try not to have unreal expectations about my work. Stuff happens, you just gotta take it and find a solution. Also, in case you're wondering, I'm keeping this setup at a consistent temp of 76° F and a humidity of 95%+. I will talk more about that and how this vivarium works in the follow up video.
Let me know down in the comments what you think about this setup thus far. Do you like it better than the old or did you like the 125 better? I suspect that many of you will miss the 125, but give this one some time. That setup didn't get that strong overnight!

SerpaDesign I have a question for you! I have a 30 gal terrarium set up with a few live plants. It’s a tropical set up and I have a Gold dust day gecko in it. Plants are growing nicely and everything is seem to like the whole set up. I noticed the other day that my begonia leaves have holes in them. While looking closer I noticed two really small snails on the leaves. I quickly removed them and I am still noticing more holes. What do you recommend I do to remove these snails? Do you know of any “snail proof” plants? I was told to add a small blue tailed skink into the terrarium and that it would do some damage on the snails. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I’m sure you’ve dealt with snails before

I recently visited the state's main public aquarium and found the terrestrial and aquatic enclosures lacking. your habitats far and away exceed most of the public aquariums and zoos I've visited. you, sir, are not only knowledgeable on how to create and keep the inhabitants, you are an artist. I am always amazed and learn from your beautiful creations. thank you.

Most zoos are only worried about making money... Builds for certain animals are kept minimal or lacking due to costs... Don't know why though.. Zoos make a killing. Though, if Serpa did some zoo builds. They would be immaculately beautiful.

Your vivariums are really, REALLY good. Having only just planted it, this enclosure looks what I’d call grown in! You mentioned geckos and arboreal reptiles in the video, so I’m going to guess one of the larger New Caledonian species (given the size of this enclosure). A leachie would probably wreak havoc with all of those thin-stemmed plants, so I’m going chahoua ;)

I'm definitely going to build one. Only difference is that I will add brown anole lizards and orchids since I like them and live in Florida.

Tanner have you considered doing a video series on where to start in the hobby of bioactive vivarium keeping? The whole idea is beautiful, and appealing, but daunting. It would help to have your thoughts on where to start

What does SerpaDesign and a hollywood housewife have in common?
They have the same yearly budget on silicone.

Super Glue (basic constituent) is used in ER's to close wounds. I use it regularly. Once it touches moisture it sets.

You should do a biotope-style project, or tank that is built to represent a habitat in the world, isopod from that place, and plants and animals from that place

You should probably plant the Anubias on the ground, near moisture-tolerant plants. The Anubias may grow mold in its pot due to its high water needs and the springtails may not be able to get to it.
