@@picklesnoutpenobscott3165 There's no real value to these books *apart* from the fact that it was used in Myst. Aye. I loooove Myst, and I want to make my own Myst book, but I'd use a dictionary or thesaurus, not something like this, even if it were less authentic. Hurting books is a 'no'.
Same! I wouldn’t be able to do it. I haven’t made the Myst book but I have made other fake books using the boxes that are made to look like an old book. Cover it, age it and add tons of tiny details and you have a hollow yet sturdy book to use for anything.
Myst was my very first video game EVER and holds a very special place in my heart. So many happy childhood memories of me and my dad playing through the series, solving puzzles together and and developing our own theories around the infinite amount of lore in the game. Sadly, not many people my age know it (I started playing it just around the time that URU released), so I don't get to talk about it with other people as much as I would like to. But every time someone even vaguely mentions Myst, it fills my heart with endless amounts of joy and nostalgia. Thank you for making this project! It made a weird nerd from the other side of the world very very happy :D
I took Myst down in a 3 day weekend marathon when I was in my early teens. It was a breakthrough for me at the time, having been diagnosed ADD. It taught me that I could focus, if I was interested enough. And man was that game captivating. Even more so the sequels. It has been the benchmark that I hold to my adventure puzzle gaming experiences to date. I played all the way through the third game, Exile, taking about two days each time. And Riven was such a leap forward, I actually bought the coffee table book they produced about its development, “From Myst to Riven”. I’d always hoped the world of Myst and the D’ni would reassert itself as gaming progressed, especially in mobile platforms, but sadly it seems Cyan has mostly relegated it to the “History” shelf for now, with only a simple app port of the first two games. Fireproof games have released what I think of as the spiritual successor to the Myst series in their app based puzzlers The Room 1-3 and Old Sins. Worth checking out if you haven’t.
I've only just started watching this vid, but THANK YOU! If anyone was going to do a MYST build it was gonna be you guys! The fact that technology has now caught up to what was pure fantasy back then is amazing. Who would imagine that books could talk to the reader as if you where in the same room? Thank you Britt and Bill for making another old nerd happy, yet again!
Fun fact, RIUM+ also has a DeLorean and cosplays as Doc Brown, he's a cool guy, I've met him at a convention many years ago. Of all the sources to use, his is by far the most detailed.
Pretty freaking awesome!!! I knew it would be. Been waiting for this one for a while now, wondering when you were gonna finish up. I remember playing MYST back in the day. A very cool game. And now you have made it even cooler! Thanks, guys!
I said it on Patreon, but I have to say it here too . . . OMG!!!!! This brings me such joy! I was a huge Myst and Riven fan (totally agree with Britt on Riven being the best). Spent so much time on these games. This was just a genius way to do this whole project!!!! Took me right back to one of my fondest memories and favorite games of all time! And the two of you are so adorable!!! Thanks guys!!!
Nice work :) I wonder, could you have used your vinyl cutter to make the placement stencil? Then, just applied the glue over top of the stencil, lay the letters, and remove the vinyl? I've been eying a cricut maker lately, so I keep trying to think of new ways to use a good vinyl cutter for prop making shenanigans....
This is just one of the coolest props I've seen recently! Great job. My parents were really into Myst when I was young and then I played it later when I was old enough. Fantastic game with so much mystery and numerous good puzzles that were slightly frustrating, but a blast. Such good memories. Thanks for making my Monday better! :)

My eyes lit up seeing this video! Not many people know about Myst, and its other 2 games Riven and Exile. I used to play the whole trilogy with my dad when I was younger, we had the walkthrough books and everything about it. I was fortunate to inherit the books and game set from him when he passed away a few years ago and it will always hold a special place in my heart. (the ironic thing about growing up playing this game was that we played it in the early 2000s and I was just barely a teenager at the time. thankful I grew up with awesome games like this)
This is literally one of my favorite games from my childhood. Partially because it was just so good and partially because the memories I have playing it with my dad. He wasn't really into video games but he liked this one and we would take turns playing it (me while he was at work and him in the evenings) and sharing our notes, hand drawn maps, and passcodes. Riven stumped us and we never ended up finishing it but we had a lot of fun with both.

A fun project and a cool video! As a follow up, you guys could do a video showing how to age/distress a new book (like a cheap journal) for all those who might be squeamish about cutting into an old book. Maybe hide a small tablet in it or have a little build off to see who can think of the most creative way to make a hide-a-book
Ah! This is so nice! While my dad had both MYST and Riven, I grew up on the latter. I remember having to swap out disks! Looks super fun to do and I might have to pick up one of those old books just for this purpose!
Easier way to plot out where the phone screen is probably would have just been put it in plac and bring up turn on one of those full screen flashlight apps. Then you could trace exactly where the perimeter of the veiwable screen is using the light showing thru the page.
Instead of measuring and hoping you get the right location for the final window, you could just turn the phone on and trace the outline of the screen. Awesome job!!

I just tried Riven for the first time, found a copy of it at a Goodwill. Tho, even with an iMac G3, changing the disc for every new area is a hard mechanic to go back to. Might just wait for the VR version to be released to finish it.

How many book lovers died a little watching this video? Destroying 150 year old book :o You could of made a fake book to use. It would of been more work I know but it can be done. Love the project though guys. Keep up the good work.
it causes pain to watch it happen, but Harpers were like the readers digest condensed books of their day there were tons of them and they are still plentiful enough to not be rare on the whole. their main value outside historical is to the people hunting them down to make myst books out of them, (but it IS much preferable to build a lookalike than murder a book that's survived this long.) That's what they used for the original game prop though, so, sometimes people like to go that extra step for authenticity.
Thanks for watching! This book is a catalogue that can't be used anymore and isn't something that can really be read for fun. Now it has a new life being used and loved by us!
@@punishedprops Historical recreationist use catalogs all the time for reference material. I have several myself as they give insight to actual items that were for sale during the past. Once I realized a real gorgeous 150 year old book was going to be destroyed, I turned off the video. I just couldn't watch.
@@punishedprops Not sure that is the best reason to justify destroying one. ;) I would at least verify if books like that are rare, if not at all.. go for it... if it kind of is... make your own. That's what I would do at least. Love the video nonetheless.
not to date myself but, I remember being so amazed that my friend's dad had a computer that could run Myst. It was one of the first really cool-looking games I remember from when I was growing up.
I *Loved* playing Myst! Was super fun and the graphics were awesome. I used to play at night when the kids went to sleep and it was really creepy for some reason being all alone on the island... Riven was fun but Myst was my favorite. Nice book!

Thanks for letting us know you're interested in that build! We have our current schedule worked out, but there could be room for this kind of video in future plans.
The maker part of me likes the concept, but the book lover part absolutely abhors the idea of partial destruction of such an old book. So mixed feelings overall lol. Also hopefully those noisy neighbors stop, no way you can file any complaint about excessive noise?
Instead of measuring the phone's display and carefully plotting it out on the first page, couldn't you just have turned on the phone inside the box and traced the lit up rectangle through the paper? :D

it causes pain to watch it happen, but Harpers were like the readers digest condensed books of their day there were tons of them and they are still plentiful enough to not be rare on the whole. their main value outside historical is to the people hunting them down to make myst books out of them, (but it IS much preferable to build a lookalike than murder a book that's survived this long.) That's what they used for the original game prop though, so, sometimes people like to go that extra step for authenticity.
The Sphinx was originally built with a lion head 6,000 years ago. Then 4,500, its face was re-carved to resemble King Khufu.
wasn't there a game after riven too?
Exile!
@@punishedprops Yes!
This is such a great idea! I love the video with both of you (not that the solo videos arent also amazing)!
Thanks so much for watching!
Really cool project but I think by far the best part was both of your giddiness and overall excitement.
Love this one! This was one of my favorite games!
Aww yay! Thanks so much!
GIR: Ooooooooooooooh!
Zim: A Hunter-Destroyer ma--
GIR: What is it?!
Zim: A Hunter-Destroy--
GIR: What is it?!?!
Part of me is a bit sad that a 140 year old book (or at least the content) is gone, but I also played MYST and this is amazing!
We're super stoked to give this book new life! Otherwise it would have just sat on a shelf not being used by anyone
Great work guys!
Thanks so much!
Riven being Britt's favorite = great taste in games.
Stay classy you two.
You too!
Nice game but 6 cd's swapping was sometimes frustrating.
It was great to see/hear Britt more in this one!
Aww thanks!
not to date myself but, I remember being so amazed that my friend's dad had a computer that could run Myst. It was one of the first really cool-looking games I remember from when I was growing up.
Right? IT was SO unique for its time
2:25 ... Britt, L = 50 in Roman numerals. It's volume 54 ;).
Thanks!
That intro, Awesome! Man, I love you guys!
Did you ever play The 7th Guest?
Thanks so much! Oh yeah! HA! It was a really shoddy Myst clone, but kind of bananas and kind of worth playing as an artifact of the time.
@@punishedprops 7th Guest came out before Myst, but I agree that it's shoddy lmao
I *Loved* playing Myst! Was super fun and the graphics were awesome. I used to play at night when the kids went to sleep and it was really creepy for some reason being all alone on the island... Riven was fun but Myst was my favorite. Nice book!
That's wonderful!
Hey! (Not an actual) Roman numerals bot here --- In actuality LIV represents the number 54. Thusly, the book utilized here is the 54th volume of New Monthly Magazine.
Cheerio!
Thanks!
If only you could have got your hands on the linking book from the recent anniversary kickstarter campaign.
That would have been cool!
Do you do comissions?
Thanks for your interest, but Punished Props is not currently taking on any new commission clients. Thank you for your understanding!
Yoooooo that intro... this whole thing!!!! is so nostalgic holy crap i loved that WAAAYYY to much lmao this game came out when i was born and my grandma got me into it when i was about 10. THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER.
Aww thanks so much! We're so glad you liked it!
J'ai adorée le jeu, votre démo donne des idées 😁 superbe travail!
Thanks!
So many memories with Myst. I have the first 2 actual books, book of Atrus and book of Ti'ana.
That's awesome!
Iv never heard of myst but I will 100% check it out :)
Also great work as always!
I would love to see more props Brit loves from her games , It would be so interesting on the different taste is games/props, if there is ofcourse :P.
Cheers you two!
It's an awesome game, we love it so much!
Shipping was a little more than $40? Didn't the seller know about media mail?
For Letters, why wouldn't you use a resin printer?
That's also an option!
The hammering just makes it sound like a legit workspace. I bet it's one of your interns just banging on stuff for effect :D
Hah! I wish
Lookin at my 25th anniversary edition MYST book with some side eye!
👀👀👀👀
You know what's funny? I'm going to be streaming Myst soon. As soon as the adapter arrives for my old PC so I can capture the video, that is.
If you like retro games, you should drop by and say hi!

The intro was perfect!!
Thank you! We were super excited to make it :)
YAAAAAAAAS!!!!!!! The red pages! The blue pages!!!!! That fireplace puzzle!!!!! The music!!!!! YAAAAAAAS
Best game ever!!
Awesome project!
Thank you!
Will there be more Bill and Brit builds? I love the chemistry between you two!
Who knows!
You guys saying that silicone mix looks like Banana cream, it reminded me of the Banana flavoured Penicilin medicine for children. Almost the same sort of bright, almost luminous, yellow colour!
Oh dear XD
I loved this video. So awesome!
Thank you so much for watching!
I loved how the ending of Riven lead into the beginning of Myst
Full circle!
Love Myst. I want a VR version.
I still haven't beat Riven, but I did play Exile, and I picked up their more recent game, Obduction.
Heck yeah!
I have always wanted to see someone make a good xenomorph costume without spending a million dollars,
you guys should try that.
Thanks for letting us know you're interested in that build! We have our current schedule worked out, but there could be room for this kind of video in future plans.
My design professor worked on Myst! I gotta send this to him and see if he enjoys it!
That's fantastic!
The maker part of me likes the concept, but the book lover part absolutely abhors the idea of partial destruction of such an old book. So mixed feelings overall lol.
Also hopefully those noisy neighbors stop, no way you can file any complaint about excessive noise?
Probably not, considering it's an industrial complex XD Thanks for watching!
It's not Volume "L Four". It's Volume 54. L=50 IV=4. LIV=54. Yours (LXVIII) is volume 68.
Instead of measuring the phone's display and carefully plotting it out on the first page, couldn't you just have turned on the phone inside the box and traced the lit up rectangle through the paper? :D
I sure could have! Probably would have been easier XD
