Forget all these other people in the comments, they want everything done in 30 seconds and that's why there's so many videos that don't give the info you need. For someone who doesn't have a lot of knowledge on a certain topic (like someone with their first shotgun) every detail counts. A few minutes of explanation gets rid of several hours of trial and error. Thank you sir.
Also. If u have a post 2009 mossberg 500, the forend is shorter. Hogue sells A forend adapter nut that is longer. it just replaces the standard one seen in the video. It makes the 6 3/4 forend inner tube fit the standard 7 5/8 forend.
I bought a forend tool took less than a minute for complete swap and didn’t have to take shotgun apart threads were protected correction had to remove the barrel only part removed for access to the nut

You're right Glory2America...I never bothered swapping out forend due to all the other hellish videos out there that make this look like a painstaking process. I can't believe how incredibly simple this was with just a butter knife and a plastic hammer. Got an Ergo forend coming tomorrow, I can't wait. Thanks a lot!
Tried using the plastic tool and instructions Magpul supplied to take off the castle nut without sliding the entire assembly off the tube, on a new 590A1. Nut was tight enough the plastic tool broke. More involved, but your method is gonna have to be the way I go now, unless I buy an actual steel tool. Thanks for the video, since that will be my likely path now, since the Magpul instructions won't work for me now without the tool
Forget the haters. I have a 17 year old 500A with this exact forend and needed some help. Mine did not just slid off. Your technique worked perfectly. I used a hobby deadblow and in two whacks using your method I had it off. THANKS!!
While some vids are too short and not enough info, yours was too long and way too many steps for this process. But, I think you have good practices and overall the vid helped me. Thx
I've already ordered my new forend, just watched you vid and I'm confident I will have no problems when my package gets here. Thanks for the awesome demo
this is the best video out there for removing the forend tube.i did it today in about 5sec once the gun was apart.no cutting or distoying the forend in any way. thank you very much for posting this.
yes i just did yesterday It has to be a Sure fire 623 LMG light for the 590 A1 with Bayonet lug . any other light will hit the lug . This video helped me out big time yesterday with Fullmetal FMJ reassembly video . before i found the videos i was in hell trying to figure it out it took about 40 mins after i saw the videos ,but it was my first time putting it together since its new
This works great if your castle nut is loose enough for that to work. Mine almost feels like it has loctite on it its wound so tight onto the threads. Probably gonna need a vice.
I know this video is a few years old now but is that the Mossberg 590 American cruiser? I see it has the flag engraved on the side. I have the chance to buy one but I've found very limited info about it online. Few questions, was the barrel Heavy walled or regular? Matte Blued or Parkerized? And if it came with the breacher end was it removable or pinned? Any info is greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
Worked like a charm! Three bumps, then it slid right off. Based on more reading, I think I have the 7-3/4 slider assembly, guess I'll know for sure when the new forend comes in later this week. Thanks again!
Great video, especially after watching a few others hack the forend off. My combo Mossy (18" & 28") with stock & pistol grip doesn't have an inner tube bolt set up? Not sure how to approach switch out???
i just came across this video now i have a mossberg 500 cruiser that I made a little project out of and was curious if this would work with that as well. like, if it were the maverick style forend that mossberg is using for their newer models
the sure fire fore arm will cover up a few threads but that is normal and ok as long as the cap installs tight and it does...the Light is awesome .Allitac on ebay has the lights for 289 which is the best price for the 400$ light and is a authorized seller and it has to be a current light since they were redesigned for the A1 with the LUG . Allitac gets lights from surefire every two weeks so your not getting old stock
Tho those with the need for imediate gratification may find the "sociable" aspects a bit trying (ok, could have been done in five minutes) the attention to detail and reasoning behind it is very instructive compared to so many that either don't tell you why to do something or don't say how to avoid making mistakes so, try to relax a bit. Ya? That said, if you have wooden furniture, a wood foregrip is MUCH easier to remove, even if its old and dirty inside so go for it. It's a great upgrade. Just be patient and follow his other tips. And a small, rubber mallet and a butter knife would do you well. ;)
my mosber 500 did not have the tube and when i removed the stock forend and put the new one on it has play lots of play what can i do to get rid of the play?
I knew about the ATI socket, it's good to have one . . . I just wanted to show folks how to do it without needing any special tools :) Thanks for posting and for the video response !
I used a good old butter knife. Happy you did this video. I couldn't find a Hood vid on this month's ago. Armory channel shows the ati tool which is great but not really necessary for those trying to save a few bucks
Yea, I have a mossberg 500 shotgun, and I'm trying to change out the fore grip, but mine seems to be different, there's nothing to turn on the end of my pump...I'm so confused...oh well, I guess I'll just leave the pump...I'm installing a side saddle and pistol grip now
I’ve been afraid 😱 to change my fore end, because a video I watched scared me into not doing it. This video gave me the confidence (kick in the ass) I needed to do this. Thank you so much.
great video bro ! FMJ told me you had had it & you saved my ass . you should put in your title that this will work for sure fire light installs on 590 A1 since you are the only one with a video on how to swap fore ends . i did a search looking for Mossberg sure fire fore grip light install and came up empty .thanks a Million bro....
Good info on how to do this without a tool. Though you can take the barrel off without having to disassemble everything, but of course then you'll need that tool to remove the forend. But if you get a Magpul or most brands, they will give you the tool.
Could you do this on a wooden forend or am I stuck with the wood? I bought a Houge forend because it'll be easier for me to get a grip on when I'm hunting or shooting in bad weather but I just can't get the wooden one off lol
Nice video. I just tried an ATI Akita forend and it slips under the heat shield on my Mossberg 500 when I pump it. Not sure if you have a heat shield, but I'm interested to know if the Hogue does the same? Is the Hogue Tamer forend a hard plastic?
Legit man legit lol. I didn't wanna buy a stupid tool and knew someone out there had to figured another way out. I just got a fab defense forend so I can't wait thabks

Man this is just not working for me, I tried unscrew it with a pair of metal scissors and wound up breaking the scissor lol and my mossberg 500 persuader is only a couple of months old and hasn't been fired...
+Oni Hall ... lol, sorry to hear about the scissors... I think you just need something a little stronger, like the big knife I used in the video... hopefully you found a way after this!
great video! I learned alot, and you are correct, the past couple videos I watched regarding changing out the fore ends were saying you need to pretty much crush the old one to get it off, I was about to take my gun to a smith to have them do it, im glad I came across your video, now a question for you however, the fore end I bought has the charging arms installed, how would I transfer just the tube to my new fore end?
Thank you for showing people the propper way to do this. There are so many idiots on TH-cam showing people that they should pry the forend apart with screwdrivers. Peolple this is the correct way to do this if you value your gun.
Awesome! You just saved me a whole bunch of anxiety! :) Just got the Mossberg 500a today (first shotgun), and started looking into what what necessary to replace the forend. One question for ya, I know that there are also two lengths of slider assembly for the 500a. The 6-5/8 and the 7-3/4. How is that measured? The length of the slider tube to the pulls or including the end cap the pulls are attached too? Thanks man!
+Glory2America I good for now, but I'll need to replace the tube if I want to put a magazine extension on it. Just wanted to say good advice on putting the cap back on the tube.

informative and helpful! but seeing you use the knife as a "multi-tasker" reminded me of the saying "computer technology is a simple as choosing the correct wrench to pound in the proper screw."
10 years later and this is still a fantastic tutorial.
thanks!
