    Go for it, dude! I was never able to be unemployed, and make art. I always had a backup job, part time when I could get one. Being an artist means you have handy skills, that translate to many mediums. I was a printmaker and exhibited my prints, and sold them,.....I sent them all over the USA, to exhibits. I sold them at local arts festivals, too. Simultaneously, I built custom, one of kind, "art" furniture, and exhibited them as well. I was employed most of the time at a picture framing shop, ( not full time) which also helped me "network" with other artists, and find artsy, side jobs. This was all before the invention of the Internet, & computers. I applied for and won grants, competing with artists all over the state of Ohio. This also supplemented my income. Finding an art dealer or representative is also helpful.

    Keep it up. I was completely disillusioned with the idea of making a living in art by your age. I still do stuff as a hobby, but I am stuck in the corporate life now.

    word of advice being a full time artist doesn't mean you should only focus on traditional art but using you artist mind to create multiple flows of income so; creating and selling music is one, shooting films is another, photography projects, approach everything the same way you approach painting. it's 2019 you don't need to paint on canvas but you need to paint your ideas through the advancement of resources; so paint with films or photography, I saw your website as amazing your art is it would be more profitable if you thought outside the box more; so approach artist and paint their album covers, get into digitalising your paintings and take them from one dimension into multi-dimensions. Your art needs to be appreciated but the aesthetic is hard to be understood just on canvas alone. You know make clothing prints, duplicate your paintings into multi dimensional surface and shift them from paintings into sculpture or everyday objects like a pillow or a sofa that sort of thing that's how you can be full time doing it.

    First, I love that easel you made! So many useful tips and tricks there! Secondly, the dog portrait turned out awesome! I've done animal portraits, but as you are aware, people don't hand over a great photo, and you have to work with what you have, then add reference photos to help with things like head shape, fur, lightting and such. And lastly, don't be afraid of those commissions! I take any of them I can get, providing the client is willing to pay the price. Painting for my own pleasure, then trying to sell that painting is a bit harder. I do it, but i find that what I may want to paint isn't what the consumer may want to buy. But that's me. I hope you are having better luck at that!

    I've enjoyed your video, and energy young brother. It reminds me of my younger days when I too had dreams of making a living as a full time artist. I managed to do it, but it was a different world in the 1990's before the internet when I was making a sole living from it making good money. It was harder, but easier in many ways before the net. You're a talented dude, and certainly more savvy in the social media thing than some of us older artist like myself who have been reluctant toward the net. You will be rolling in portrait commissions if you like doing that type of work which is a good niche. Great job on the dog! Savor these early days of the enthusiasm of discovery as these can be some of your most creative. It could likely vary from full to part time like it does for many of us, but I'm confident you will always be making money as an artist. Best of luck, and hope the road is kind to you.

  • @nicholasjagger6557
    @nicholasjagger6557 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if you read comments. I've just one, and that is if you had left the canvas white and not toned it all, you could have used the white to keep the highlights on the fur, as adding white to a toned canvas will limit brilliance. Sometimes the white of a basic priming can be a good friend. I must say I like your approach and commitment. No one knows but us how much work it takes to be a decent artist!
