I think that people who criticize the transfer or grid method don't realize that even if you did transfer an image and skip over the free-hand drawing, you still gotta paint it, and that alone is a task that only a skilled artist can pull off. Congratulations!
Ade le hey! So the transfer method refers to either using a projector to trace the lines into a canvas or using graphite transfer paper to trace an existing drawing made on paper or digital which has been printed. Some people also use a grid method which is basically drawing from a grid or coordinate method which guarantees perfect proportions
Exactly. also the end result is the exact same, only with transfer you are saving A LOT of time in the prep stages of a painting, so as you can get to the actual painting stages. I find it's usually only non artists who critique such. It is an annoying criticism
@@livetochange974 Who says he cant draw. he could grid that out if he wanted but why waste all that time and energy for the same result, especially with a commision when its not like your're getting paid by the hour. when you say 'colouring' is easier to draw im guessing you dont paint
There was a time when I wouldn't have used carbon paper to transfer images, but in our world as artists, we need to think of how to best manage our time verses the money we are paid to do a commission. Do I love drawing freehand? Yes. Is it cost effective? No. Clients want to pay less and less for our art, and yet we need to make a living. So the use of helpful tools such as carbon paper is essential to our work. In the end, the painting process is still "our talent" and that's the most important thing. 😊
Thats 100% ok! I remember when I first started painting i was always ashamed to say that i used a reference picture. As if having a reference makes the painting less skillful xD Me personally i prefer to draw freehand even if it takes more time, not only because i feel more accomplished but also because i feel as though i learn more and pay closer attention to forms, lighting, how things work ect. It is all personal preference and no less impressive if you trace the imagine before painting it.
@@c.j2138 I agree that drawing freehand helps you get better. And I do that when I can. Sadly in this world of "want t cheap and fast" it doesnt allow me to do freehand as often as I like. Clients rarely know what goes into creating art. And we as artists suffer for it. Thanks for that lovely reply!
Dude I just realised how unique your channel is for an art TH-cam I can tell you put a lot of effort into the film side of things that’s what I am going to do when I start my channel
I just want to say to you and every other artist or individual who sees this; Art is Art no matter the form or how you choose to do it. Don't ever feel like you have to explain YOUR choices in YOUR art to anyone. Individualism is what makes all of you special. FREEDOM!!!! LOVE&LIGHT!!!!
I'm a Painting BFA grad, I didn't start use image transfer/grid methods for the first couple years. I too thought that is was "cheating" or "faking"- which it still CAN be. Some people without formal training or mastery of foundational observation/drawing skills will rely on these methods as a crutch to compensate for their lack of skill. For example, I had one colleague explain "I can paint but I can't draw." Which is like saying "I can run but I can't walk." Understanding of the fundamentals is as important as any other stage of your process However, many trained and talented artists, professional and amateur, use these methods as a tool for accuracy and effeciency. They can draw, but these tools help them be more effective with their time. And as an artist selling work/commissioning, spending less time helps to make your work available to more people by making it more affordable.
I 100% feel the same way. And I'm an MFA grad. Understanding fundamentals is the most important thing. Once you understand, you are then free to use the tools at your disposal.
"Some people without formal training or mastery of foundational observation/drawing skills will rely on these methods as a crutch to compensate for their lack of skill. " Sorry, I don't get your point. What is the problem with that? The important thing at the end is creating a piece of art. Doesn't matter how. I don't have mastery of foundations, heck not even the basics, but I love creating art and I use whatever is at my reach. Grids, transfers, stabilizers (in digital painting), etc etc.
One's who "trace" usually get caught. You can easily tell by how their portfolio is and how consistent certain parts are. Especially by artists or enthusiasts because there are tell-tale signs. Same thing goes for people who use digital filters and fx on stock photos then call it a painting.
Looks really great. Im so glad you mentioned it that it takes all previous experience of smaller projects that end up culminating in the total arsenal of experienced and aquired skill to end up in each next bigger projects or projects of totally different sort. I am also glad that you mentioned the cost. People underestimate the materials required to complete any picture. Afterall we are not painting on printer paper. My colored pecils for example cost $5.00 each or sometimes more. The only thing they see is paint on paper. Sadly often times they dont even see how many layers it requires. How time consuming it is. That is why most dont understand or want to accept the price for art and are therefore totally unrealistic. Your painting is truly beautiful.
You're fast becoming 1 of my favourite artists to watch on TH-cam, your passion and drive really shows when you speak about what you're doing. It really helps me to feel like things are achievable if I keep pushing forward and learning. Thanks dude!

Dude, I was so stoked when I found carbon copy paper! A serious game changer. Had no idea it even existed until recently, but now I use it to transfer my own sketches onto canvases or watercolor paper to paint. I definitely could see how people could think it's "cheating" because it does make the whole creative process much easier, but I like to think that's due to the fact that it is indeed a tool like you say. Anyways, dope video as always sir!
Don’t apologize for your methods. Enjoy the outcome if your satisfied. You did a great job on the dog! Practice distant (perspective) impressions, try using a 1 1/2 “ brush, loading it with a cool colour and pressing it against the canvas, then lifting away. Darker colours as you move closer. Good results.
