Aaaah... here it is. the mystery clip from Du-Beat-E-O. I've wondered about this ever since the mid 80's. This actually isn't the Runaways. It was literally RIGHT after the Runaways broke up, in the spring of 1979. The original idea for the film in the beginning was to feature what was left of the Runaways, which at the very end was basically just Joan, Lita, and Sandy. Lita and Sandy walked out before filming began, so they hired 3 actresses to appear alongside Joan as ‘the band’. The film was never finished. It was abandoned mid-production and never saw release.
I found a copy of the film in 1990 on VHS at a flea market in New Jersey. I could not believe my eyes when i found it. It was a bootleg with a handwritten label.
I still can’t believe Sandy threw Sid Vicious into the London River because he kept on trying to get at Joan. Wish they put that into the Runaways Movie. R.I.P. Sandy😢
Yeah, they would have been like slightly older sisters when I was growing up younger and though we can verify they were exploited, abused, ripped off, highly overworked and even raped and kidnapped, they were STILL MORE BADASS than they ever were given credit for! Also very intelligent and a better band than MOST of the guy bands!! Achieved great worldwide heights under 18! Name guys who were that good!
Wow - Rainbeaux - she lived down the street from me (Arleta CA in '75?) - my friend Karen boarded her horse at her little house - her son Justin was about 2 and she lived with some guy named John (who was a pervert and she knew it) always trying to pick up on me & my 13 year old friends. She was an absolute sweetheart. I had heard that she played with Joan Jett back in the day. I only knew she was an actress (in fact Phantom of the Paradise had just come out when she first moved here). I never knew she was her original drummer. Outstanding! RIP Cheryl!!!
Wowza! So happy you made it out unscathed. Joan seems to have a true heart. If not, please do not tell me differently. She is awesome. Have a nice day.
Thanks for the recollections Susan, it's nice to hear a little info about Cheryl even though it was nearly 45 years ago. Seems like just 5. Cheryl should have had the lead part in "Pretty Women" instead of Julia Roberts, she would have been perfect for it.
Wow Susan, that's awesome! I'm a huge fan of Cheryl and would love to do a book and/or movie about her. I have so many questions to ask about her, let me know if you are open to answering. God bless, hope to hear from you again soon!
I actually had a couple of bit parts in that movie and helped out with minor stuff when I was in high school. I played a ghoul in one scene and a vampire in a fight scene. I met her for a few seconds as I came out of the latrine on a set in an abandoned beanery in Fontana. She smiled shyly and with both said "hi". She was a year older and I was enchanted, of course.

@@Brewzerr Joan talks about this film in her documentary 'Bad Reputation.' She mentioned how it turned out to be a weird porno movie that she didn't sign up for and didn't actually want to do the original film but had to or she would've gotten sued.
The Super8 clips are of Sandy, Cheri, and Joan in the backseat of my dad's car. Lita was sitting backwards on the armrest between the split bucket seats filming everything. It was Dec. 1977

Wow! This is shocking! I've never seen or heard of this...I don't think! I couldn't figure out what I was seeing and first! I was like...the other girls are not recognizable and Joan looks like her so it wasn't the movie, "The Runaways", so I was way confused! Fascinating! Thanks for posting this! Is this from anything officially released?
In the original footage from the movie they were being perused by some big butch lesbians and trying to get away from them. I didn't think that story line would fit with this video or needed to be included, so it was cut from the final edit of this video. Full unedited clips from the movie "Du-Beat-e-o" can be found on youtube if you'd like to see them as they were originally filmed and intended for the movie "We're all crazy now".
Beautiful!
Godspeed, Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith.
Here for Cheryl!!
...but Joan had one of the best stage presences of anyone I've ever seen!
omg Joan is extra adorable in these clips. Her little head shake at 0:30 is the cutest thing. Love this! 😁👍
She really was cute there
An American Icon! How cool that she never changes; she loves music. Simple.
My favorito song of her!
JJ has never changed ❤
What a crazy year for Joan in 1979. I appreciate all the details! Great job👍

It would have been an incredible film just for the presence of Joan who gave it her all.
Awesome video. A truly hidden treasure.

So...someone else was a drummer in The Runaways before Sandy West?! Huh?
Cheryl Rainbeaux Smith on drums, she was a Penthouse Playmate, but my favorite was probably Lemora 1973 movie .

It's actually the film and the other girls are sadly just actors, Joan Jett is the only one really there, (this was just after the band broke up)
I wish they would have completed this movie in some form (even if it was a bad movie), I'd have loved to have seen 70s era Joan Jett acting.
