Somehow she possesses a lot of power in her Whistle Register. It's really rare because it's usually very airy and thin. Rather than powerful. It's so impressive though

Mariah Carey is definitely a Soprano. Her tessitura is really high ... And her vocal nodules only help her with the Whistle Register. Nothing else lol. Her vocal weight and color is really bright and girly. Mariah can go low. But that doesn't mean she's an Alto... And Betty is probably a Lyric-Mezzo. She doesn't have the weight of a true Contralto. But if she sang in a choir… Then yes. She’d be singing alto parts.
Her singing voice is just amazing... I mean you can hear a raspy sort of voice and it seem that it would not be possible for her to hit those high notes.... I am blown away!!

Ok, I keep reading some of these comments and I have to set it straight. Mariah did not "hit" a G#7 in "Emotions" live. She merely tapped the note. It was nowhere near sustained. This F7 was HELD, effortless, and soaring. No comparison, period!
She has been able to hit A7 in another emotions video if I am correct. Also you are wrong, she did hit the note. She was sick so it gave her the extra ease to hit so high just like in her All In Your Mind performance @Philidelphia hitting F7 in staccato. Emotions is only one the many examples of her excellent technique in the whistle register.

That is why I said she "tapped" the note. It was not sustained, especially anywhere near the length and resonance of this F7 in this video. So I stand by my original statement. Also, Mariah can't even sing Emotions as it was sung in 1991 live now. Her concerts are laced with interwoven prerecorded tracks, and if you deny that, your reality check bounced. That is just fact. So add to that, a lack or preservation for her voice, probably because she wasn't supporting her whistle over the years as a proper singer should.

Songs like "Love Take time", "Vanishing", "Vision Of Love" etc. The fact that Mariah can still do a whistles for over 2 1/2 decades with a good consecutive use only shows her dominant technique. Betty also does not have the same voice type as Mariah, she is no where near as fast as Mariah. Being that as it may, Betty and many other whistlers like her sustain whistles because they cannot aquire the coloratura abilities like Mariah can. Emotions is a song made for a coloratura soprano, technically she did hit melodically and that's all that matters. Mariah doing staccato is impressive especially hitting them in the 7th octave.
