    After two years I'm still thinking about how during Gael's fight the lightning strikes were blue instead of yellow, whereas throughout the entire series yellow lightning has been the manifestation of divine power.
    It makes me feel like the blue lightning was supposed to represent that you really were standing at the end of the world, with all the gods dead and forgotten. The lightning, just like everything else, is now wild and untamed, formed of raw power rather than divine fury.

    Gael's "second" second phase is probably the most epic thing in all of Dark Souls. This dude slashing you with his big ass fuck sword, a cape that hits you in the face, frontflip-auto-crossbow-into-mega-knockdown-strike, blood eruption creating a huge thunderstorm everywhere.
    Like, how could you even top this? And I thought Friede's third phase was the most "OMG THIS IS SO AWESOME" thing ever. They really put a lot into making sure the non-meme bosses are absolutely excellent.

    I don't mind Midir's HP. He's a legit Ancient Dragon. If he's not nearly as tanky as the one in DS2 he doesn't deserve the title.

      On ng+7 it took me 7 minutes with a 73 strength 65 dexterity 55 faith build with Lothric Knight GS with refined gem and lightning blade. And that build is very overleveled.

    • @JasonDoe1000
      @JasonDoe1000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      For me it was 10 min on Ng+7 with Profaned Greatsword and Llyod Sword ring, it depends on your position, if you are agressive and attack his face it will be a quick fight

    • @buuhan3189
      @buuhan3189 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Ng 7 practically doubles his health and is the highest difficulty you can achieve so his health come at no surprise. 73 strength is useless considering the cap is 60-66 and 65 dex is as well since you're using a mainly strength oriented weapon LKGS. Your damage is also heavily reliant on what kind of infusion you have. 55 faith for a buff build is not that good considering you should be fine with only 30 faith and lightning blade. 55 faith is suited more for spells like sunlight spear. Overall not a good way to try and say Midir is an unfair fight. @wooshi998

    The way I see it, Midir is designed specifically to be fought face to face. Damage dealt to anywhere other than his head is minimal. Midir also makes a lot of turns so that he is facing you. His mobility and fire attacks he aims towards the ground discourage you from attacking his legs most of the time.
    When you fight Midir with these things in mind and focus on attacking his head and facing him, you notice that a lot of his attacks have a small rest period after he's attacked where you can strike his head for good damage.
    The fight (IMO) requires a lot of patience on your part as you dodge and wait for the correct openings.
    Me personally, I LOVED this fight. It was incredibly tricky as he would 1 and 2 shot me a lot of times. This fight was so satisfying (don't get me started on his atomic breath, especially his finale beam attack) with the way it was paced. Easily one of my all time favourite dark souls bosses!

    I actually went back to fight Midir as the last boss in a chronological order for myself. I tried a couple hours fighting him one day and just couldn't get him. I made sure I was the right level, I tried to exploit his weakness and even tried co op. I hopped on the next day and on my third attempt I finally downed him and felt like a god. Nothing has made me feel so satisfied in a video game as well as that victory. You truly feel like you're fighting a dragon raised by the gods in that battle. To me Darkeater Midir is probably my favorite and most difficult fight in the whole souls series. What a way to end it.

      Midir is dogshit. Pure trash. Horrific camera (like every other large boss). You spend more time chasing him around the arena like every other dragon fight to get hits in (when possible). He does ridiculous damage. He has way too much HP. There's no real instinctive dodging to his moves, you essentially have to plan out what he's going to do so you'll be in a position to whack his head when he's finally done flailing around and shooting fire. He just plain sucks. There are fun and difficult fights, and then there are fights that are difficult for all the wrong reasons, and Midir falls into the latter category.

I write this after fighting Midir, my last boss cause i couldn't find him even knowing deep down the encounter on the bridge wasn't our last, and i gotta say that Midir is the best Dragon in the series hands down. Midir was okay, but not the best in the series. I was hoping he would stand equal to Kalameet, but he sadly stood a bit lower than Sinh the Slumbering Dragon. HOWEVER... Only "Dragon" boss that is god awfully made, is the Ancient Dragon boss in DaS2. Midir is a great boss, but hardly a challenge. He is just a long drawn-out fight of patience and observation, really.

      Samuel Freeman As you said....no, that’s not correct. First of all, the dragon on Archdragon Peak is a corpse. Second, the dragon in Ash Lake is a descendant of the everlasting dragons, not one itself. Kalameet, Midir, Sinh are all Ancient Dragons/Archdragons if you like, dragons that most likely existed alongside the Everlasting ones but weren’t everlasting themselves. The only true Everlasting Dragon we meet at all in the series is Seath, while he lacked the stone scales he’s still an everlasting dragon by birth - just lacking the scales.

    Midir is definitely the coolest "large monster" boss I've fought in the series so far. Far from one of the hardest bosses, but I would say he pretty much represents the apotheosis of the dragon boss archetype. And Gael is undoubtedly one of the best bosses in the series, if not the best. He's tough, but the mechanics of the fight itself are so perfectly done. It's like an insane, rhythmic dance between two master fighters that steadily gets more and more chaotic and intense without ever losing that rhythm. It gets more complex, but never in an unfair way. Gael takes what makes bosses like Artorias fun and, similar to Midir, perfects the formula. You will probably die many times, but nothing will feel more badass than your final, victorious round with him.

    Well, to defend a few of the weak points you mentioned... most of the gankfests and environmental hazards can be solved by observing and using your environment. The fucking angels? When they cast curse on you they reveal the position of their actual body. The harald knight gank stairs? Clearly positioned so you can plunge attack them (just like every other Harald Knight in the DLC except the one in the middle of the swamp), in most cases it one shots them. Still annoying, but mostly because of the fuckers who throw lightning at you. It can annoy you if it's not what you are expecting from the game, but to be fair they kinda needed a way to kill us who have hundreds or thousands of hours logged in the series, to remind us that feel of the first time where we used to hide behind our shields looking around every corner, behind, up and back, looking out for ambushes and ways to get past seemingly impossible threats, and at least for me they succeeded. The swamp is kinda meh (still better than every other swamp in the series because it doesn't fucking poison and slow you), but it's also not that big in comparison to other areas and leads to some cool stuff. And the Dragonslayer Armour is just there so we can all get that fashion souls and some lore implications regarding the timeline of the DLC.
    I also want to say that, once you get rid of the environmental hazards, both the Dreg Heap and the Ringed City have some of the best exploration in the series. Places you can see, with items and enemies, but you don't know how to get to. Those moments like in DS1 when you get to a place and then see other place where you have been before, then realize there is a full part of the area you missed, or when you go full fucking circle back to a place you were 2 hours ago. That kind of thing is the exploration I like, and it's totally present here.
    Oh, and the fun of the NPC boss is invading as the boss yourself. It's probably there because the feedback they got from the Gravetender, and I love it. I also love the other 3 bosses, Gael and Midir easely took some of the highest spots in my top, and the Prince is an excellent boss overall, just not as memorable IMO.
    Everyone do yourselves a favor and buy the fucking thing, it IS amazing, and imo the best DLC on a Dark Souls game by far (not including Bloodborne since my PS4 died before I got to play The Old Hunters ;-;).
    Edit: I've been playing a bit more as a Spear of the Church and I can say they do balance you when you get to fight against a host and phantom. You get more HP, the special item recharges faster (I think, not 100% sure) and... you get poise. Like actual, DS1 poise. Honestly with the special item, the kinda soulmass thing you shoot automatically, more hp and poise I felt like an actual boss. I only got one 1v3 but I'm sure I gave the host a hard time. Killed both his phantoms and I died when he was most likely out of estus and with like 100 health, and I'm not any sort of PVP master. In terms of 1v1 I think it's somewhat balanced. The painting guardians are not that hard to kill, and as a boss the advantages you get are the soulmass and item, but you can't estus, while the host most likely has his 15 +10 estus to chug.

      @welcometovalhalla2884 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ARTPOP Reign I already got the first item, the description says it enhances protection, so I'm guessing it gives more defense when you invade as a boss. I can't equip/use it so I guess it's just a permanent passive boost. 15 more wins to go for the second item, but I'm guessing it's another item you get to use during the fight.

      Oh, the Pilgrim Butterfly things reveal their host position? (I wouldn't call them angels, since they are definitely not the angels that were mentioned in connection to Gertrude and Lothric, these have definitely feathers).
      I missed that. Always scouted to find out, if I can catch some hint on the host position, like where the butterfly moves to when idle or so. But how do they reveal their body's position? I've never noticed any special effect or so.

    • @welcometovalhalla2884
      @welcometovalhalla2884 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sephyrias I'm not 100% sure since it's not the way I located it, but I saw the last one from afar and waited for the thing to start casting curse on me so I could go for the run. When I got to the thing, it was covered in the same light that falls from the sky and cursed you, so I guess if you run to the open and scout the area when it starts cursing, you will be able to see the light above the main body from afar. Actually I'll look this up really quick and edit. Yeah I was quick on calling them angels, but the light beam they shoot to you leave some sort of feather trail once it hits.
      EDIT: The moment they appear you can see a pillar of light illuminating the main body. I'll check myself later if the same pillar appears when they curse you, I'm pretty sure it does.
      EDIT 2: It does appear when they curse you.

    Seems fairly spot on. The only thing I have to disagree with is Midir. People always compare dragons in Dark Souls with Kalameet and honestly I think the comparison isn't really appropriate with Midir as the only similarities between Midir and Kalameet are that they are dragons and breathe fire/darkness into your face. I found Midir a lot better done to be honest. No crazy ass hitbox funkyness that resulted in conniptons and his pattern was a lot better and improved.
    The only thing I didn't like was the instant charge to the face.
    Regardless of this, the DLC is fantastic and I'm in love with it.

    I noticed that you primarily tried to attack Midirs legs and tail. If you instead only focus on the head the fight becomes way more enjoyable and is probably one of my favorite fights. For one the camera only struggles if it gets caught in Midir and if you don't stay under his belly it won't get caught in him. Secondly, you deal almost 2x as much damage if you hit his head and it is also way easier to tell the difference between his attacks.
    For me this boss was really interesting since it is the only mostly physical huge boss I can think of that actually gets harder if you try and use the strategy of showing your face up it's ass and mashing the R1 button.
    Instead it rewards methodical thinking and only going for the attack when you have the oppurtunity

      James Bevan I think ocelotte died. His father is carrying what seems like nothing, but the dragon children can become invisible (case and point Priscilla) and halfway through the fight oceiros slams his hands into the ground. PGSawesome How can Yorshka even be a legitimate child of Gwyn though? Gwyndolin was still his lastborn at the time when Gwyn was already cinder. When she says "father Gwyn and Sister Gwynevere", she is reciting the Darkmoon acceptance pact that Gwyndolin said in DS1 word for word. I don't think it is to be taken literally. She is young and her name was given to her by Gwyndolin.

And his next stage (which I still haven't beaten btw) is relentlessly agressive and hits like a truck to the point where if even one of your dodges isn't perfect you might as well give up (at least on NG+4. Now with all the bosses in the series, are you going to do another fan-voted poll for best and worst bosses? Maybe not worst as I doubt that would have changed much, but best on the other hand sure as hell will have changed with the DS3 DLC. Plus I still have an excel document with the results from the previous two polls (was a chore to type in), and I really am curious as to which bosses would lose votes and which ones would gain votes given how close the top two was.
    I don't know if I'm just a nut for stats as well as a music nut, personally I could never play a souls game as I just don't have the paitence (have a somewhat short temper when it comes to games and RNG, I have a love-hate relationship with Pokemon thanks to the hax and can get pretty pissed off), but the music and watching the boss fights I get a kick out off. Plus I like reading the lore as well (have the wiki app on my tablet).
    Instead of just doing the top ten I could see this being broken up into five videos for the top 50 (each video would count down ten starting at #50) with possibly the change in votes accounted as well. That way Demon Souls and Dark Souls 2 could make it given that Demon Souls was in the top 30 and DW2 was in the top twenty. It could be cut down to top 30 if need be. Just a suggestion when you have the time.

    I seriously agree with your thoughts on the Gael fight. It was incredibly difficult, but every time I died, I didn't get angry or upset. I knew that I could overcome the challenge. I was using the new paired greatswords for my first few attempts and sorely missed my shield, so I switched back to my normal play style and after a couple more tries finally took him down. I was a little sad to find out that that was the end, but the secret invasion afterward as well as the link to AoA was great. All in all, I am extremely happy with this DLC

    • @CookiesFTA
      @CookiesFTA 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alberto Ocada Only did it on NG+5. I can't imagine what horrors await in +7. Midir took me an hour and a half, and Gael at least 45 minutes. Having said that, on my final run, I did both almost without getting hit (only took a couple tries before I could completely avoid damage on Gael's first phase, and I was mostly getting hit on the 2nd and 3rd due to bad roll directions).

    • @Alberto-vx4ev
      @Alberto-vx4ev 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PGSawesome Demons took me 3 hours, Midir took me like an hour and a half as well, but oh man, Gael took me like 5 hours lol. Especially since my main weapon was the Onyx Blade and I'm pretty sure he's like super resistant to Dark, and I generally don't like to switch around my builds but I did end up using other weapons. Not to mention I get one-shot by the Harald knights and two-shot by the Ringed Knights. I could just be bad though cause it shouldn't be that much worse than NG+5. It was fun nonetheless.

    I loved the Gael fight, just kind of wish he was the halfway point, not the last boss. For a DLC centered around the Dark Soul, and with all the talk of Angels and Londor and stuff..... there was a surprising little amount of that.

    • @CookiesFTA
      @CookiesFTA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vernula There's almost zero mention of Londor in the DLC or leading up to it. Londor is pretty much just an explanation for one of the endings. As for angels, that was all fan guesswork.

      We didn't fight against two of the three Sisters of The Sable Church? Leaving one up in the air that we had no reason not to expect we were going to run into? This wasn't called the City of Hollows?
      You can say there's zero mention of Londor, but the people who expected Londor can be legitimately pissed because this game franchise uses small clues to bring you in on the big picture. And ALL the small clues pointed to us going to Londor.

    Why do you like O&S so much. The Demon Prince is much better IMO. Much more fair and less cheap. O&S is just hard because they're both so aggressive all the time and the second phase is easy as hell.

    • @gilgamesh852
      @gilgamesh852 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      O&S is kinda a meme these days. They arent in my top 10 at all. If you dont just R1 R1 R1 them (like most people complain that they are so hard" they are pretty easy. You can even beat smough with just a bow and running from corner to corner in the second phase.

      O&S isn't even close to aggressive by modern Soulsborne standards, half the time you can walk away from Phase 2 Pikachu (would that be Raichu?) and use a fucking Humanity lol
      I think it's not difficulty that makes it a top 5 fight, but just how fun it is, and how nice it is compared to... you know what, lets not even talk about most other gank bosses. *horrid flashbacks of TW&D and the cliff of doom*

    • @DrunkenEros
      @DrunkenEros 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I think nostalgia plays a large part too. It was the first time for many that they experienced something like that, so there was more hype. As time went on and there were more bosses like them the hype died for the newer ones, making O&S seem even better by comparison because of said nostalgia.

    I just wanted to say, about the Spear of the Church boss, the health of the person you fight, NPC or not, is affected by how many people you have summoned to help you like a normal boss. they also get a base amount of bonus protections when summoned which can be increased by giving 10 spear ornaments to get the soul dew or whatever it's called. The boss is a bit lackluster to fight but being summoned is surprisingly fun, especially when you're fighting multiple people.

The bosses didn't have that Bloodborne feel that Sister Friede had at all, and most of the enemies are as Dark Souls as it gets. The areas especially felt like DS1 more than ever. Maybe the insane moveset of the weapons, but that's kind of it's own thing, there aren't weapons like that in Bloodborne either.

    @SandboxforAircraft ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I Really Think Midir's boss design makes him one of if not the best in all of souls, since you can learn quite a lot of his attacks even before you encounter him for the first time due to his overworld encounters, which also provides a lot of hype and surprise for when you finally encounter him for an amazing bout. Midir is still at least a 9/10 in my eyes, although i do understand the gripes people have with the fight.

    Gael is a mix of so many bosses : The Orphan (like you said); the intro and some moves remind of Artorias and even the Abyss Watchers (with the jumping-side-spinning attack); the long but predictable 5-6 moves combo like Manus, Soul of Cinder and Pontiff; the DragonSlayer Armor where you're bombarded by fire-like orbs; he also reminds me of Ludwig with a first phase beast-like and a second one where he (seems to) becomes more human

    I was having the same issues with Midir until i stopped going under him completely. I started just standing in front of his head, dodging backwards, and hitting his head (which takes double damage over his legs) and while it's still a long ass fight of endurance, it becomes much more manageable when you only have to worry about reading his tells and not about wonky camera issues. You also barely have to worry about his downward fire attack.

I would much rather prefer a boss that is fun and easy(Nameless King), rather than a boss just made to be hard but not fun(Darklurker). And if a boss manages to be fun and hard, than great(Ludwig). So how I would rate it would be based off fun, instead of difficulty, but I know other people have different values when it comes to bosses.
