Not really. Not significantly more than other ships for sure... especially with the addition of night vision. Don't buy into the marketing... the "Hauler" is really a "Hopper" (as the only thing it's good for is hauling your own ass around), and the Krait Phantom is really the KraitX.
@@vib80 it's more about its heat profile. The phantom runs cooler than most other ships, except maybe the diamondbacks. You can probably idle in SR with no issues. Still, NV does screw up stealth quite a bit.
Hands down the best exploration ship in the game for me. It does everything I ever wanted from an exploration vessel. And yeah, I was kinda expecting to hear about built in Guardian tech...
Hah, precisely my thoughts. ASP looks like a failed geometry homework of a 6-th grade schoolkid. Phantom has those Millennium Falcon vibes. Each to their own I suppose. I can admire utilitarian practicality of Lakon ships, but Krait isn't exactly luxurious or sleek looking either.
Hmm, high jump range, low heat signature, high speed, ability to land on medium pads. This might just be the logical smuggling step-up from my Type-6! That ship had held its own in that role for years, as the jump range on the python just never quite cut it for me. Also if I find myself needing to defend myself then it's a much better choice than the type-6 for sure!
Honestly? I prefer this over the MkII. While I... Didn't care for the MkII, as I didn't care for Python, I like the Phantom. The lack of the 3rd large weapon and SLF is "meh" to me. The thrusters are cool, the cockpit looks like DeLacy finally found a paint bucket, and, maybe I'm biased, but I get Firefly vibes from it (more than MkII, oddly enough). I don't use it for combat, due to the missing hardpoint, but I didn't use Mk2 for combat, either
Yep, the phantom is only good for exploration. But it is damn great... I mean sure, me gaining 2Ly range over my old dear now probably scrap metal asp explorer, does not sound like a big deal but it is... it really builds up in the end... when doing 30 jumps, you get to do 1 jump less... now imagine going to the core in a ship with 71.5Ly range vs ~69.5Ly range. in general, 2.8% decrease in time spent jumping there would equate to around 7 minutes saved! Yeah who am I kidding, it's just pleasing to see ever so slightly higher jump ranges for your dedicated exploration ship...
How does that stack up against an engineered Anaconda? I got an exploration spec Anaconda with a jump range a little over 60ly, but I'd always be happy to find something that jumps even further.
@@TheTattorack Well Anaconda is supposed to be the furthest jumping ship in the game. So if you wish to make it jump further, I'd suggest engineering it further, basically min-maxing it (for example, my asp, and now phantom krait uses a 1D... yes you heard me, 1D power distributor; I have engineered it to the point where it just about gets me 1 boost out of the engines haha, and that will do for me.) While it may be nice to have a fighter onboard for those awesome canyon flights and quick scenery shots, I'd never fly with a fighter while exploring; I do obviously always have an SRV onboard though. Oh and of course, you **will** need the guardian FSD booster unlocked. for asp, phantom or anaconda all respectively, it gives a flat 10.5Ly jump range boost. Infact, I am rather surprised you have managed to have an exploration fitted anaconda remain under the jump range of an exploration fitted asp. I have a not that great setup for exploration anaconda as well, and it gets up to 79Ly currently. But to be quite fair, I'd never explore in an anaconda; the supercruise is just so painful, and while going from point A to B, it just gets in the way by having to slow down at each star, instead of just instantly pitching one which way when getting out of your jump.
@@jyrgenruut I guess I'll be sticking to my Anaconda, then ^^ I really want to get the Guardian FSD booster but it looks like such a boring slog to get. @@TheTattorack Well, actually, material traders are your biggest friends!... (take what I am about to say with a grain of salt as we can now easily detect high degrade emissions with our new exploration tools and I have not tried out gathering materials yet!) Basically you can just go to a system where you know you get high-grade emissions, and farm them for easy grade-5 manufactured materials, then once you need anything at all, whether it be grade 3 or grade 4 or 5 or whatever... you can trade the farmed grade-5 material in for that without having to loathe over the grind all too much. Of course, to exchange shit for those wake exception thingies you need for grade-5 fsd, you will need other data to do it; easiest way to do that is to actually do passenger missions (especially at a place like robigo as that gives massive credits per hour on the side)... basically when greeted with the completion of a mission, very often one of the rewards may be a grade-5 or grade-4 data material, in which case you can accept it... and then just like before, just go to a data material trader and exchange what you gained for what you need. raw materials are similar, except usually I'd say you should definitely just land on a planet with a grade-4(max for raw materials afaik) material with like a 2 to 5% content, then land in a crater and go forth in your srv grinding the shit out of it... Getting a maxed out grade-5 increased jump range fsd with mass manager modification should not take more than about 2 hours of grinding if you are unlucky. As for guardian fsd booster... yeah, it's a grind for the guardian technology components... at least in the last update it was so ridiculous that I honestly was considering reporting it as a bug that you gain other guardian materials from the ruins like 2-3x more often than guardian technology components... but then I remember who we are dealing with as the developers... edit: also sorry for the long post wow... @barbarino I had my asp since before I even had horizons :P... I went to colonia, then sag-a and then back to bubble (did some back and forth of course)... and later on did some other exploration trips within 5KLy of the bubble and once going out to the netron star fields (that was still before passenger missions), to get elite exploration. The ship had 0% paintwork and while I had regenerated the integrity from time to time because... well... it directly impacts how big of an impact you can take accidentally... it was still really quite low when I sold my asp to upgrade to my current, phantom...
Don't be fooled. It can haul more cargo and has the potential for some serious teeth and still use a medium landing pad. Jump range is a bit low, but I have zero regrets about buying it once I engineered the FSD and the thrusters.
I watched this and then went and bought a phantom. The advantage over my old Mk II is the higher range. It’s great for the price if you want to do everything without having to purchance another ship to fill a certain role. It has many internal slots of the same size (i.e. 3x class 3 and 3x class 5 compartments) meaning that there is less picking and choosing between what module you want in what size slot. It is also more fun to fly than both the Python and the MkII. Real talk tho, it's about time we had an upgrade past the Asp Explorer as far as exploration ships go. I'm happy the Phantom has its niche there. I for one think the Phantom was done right. Now when are they going to fix the Crusader?
Yamiks....I too rammed myself into a planet haha. However mine happened at night, and I was too stoned to remember they put in a night vision mode lol. Anyways, great review as always! I LOVE the Phantom for it's jump range. This is my exploring vessel of choice when I cant take my Anaconda, or I feel like flying a ship with more maneuverability. I still have a fully kitted out Krait MkII, so I love them both regardless. Have a great holiday Yamiks my dude!
the phantom is an explorer and stealth variant of the mk 2 the top section of the sip is also vastly different i love both kraits wires, as they are only only ones in the game that look good
Yep, there's a reason we call it the KraitX. Which I suppose makes the MkII the Krait Scout. Which means DeLacy got things right, unlike Lakon... the Scout is the more general purpose ship and better able to face combat. The KraitX is the more stripped down version intended for a single job that's simple and safer. It isn't quite an AspX killed though... the AspX still has an edge in supercruise maneuverability. Of course, you don't need to turn and face things to scan them anymore so that's less of an issue, but it still is an advantage.
My ship. Suits my style of play down to the ground. It’s all the best bits of the Cobra and the Asp Explorer for smuggling, exploration and rank mission grinding and stacking.
I think you missed the point of this variation of the kraith : it is built for jump range AND speed. With engineered thrusters, you can achieve almost 600m/s, which means in terms of large ships, I only fear about the clipper. Clipper is great, I love mine, but it can only jump 3 times in a row before getting out of fuel, which means you must always use a slot for a fuel scoop, always, definitely not the same ship usage.
Awesome ship to grind HazRes with focused pulses and bi-weave. You can stomp pirate packs for many hours without any refueling, ammo restocking, or whatever. It's also agile nuff and with somewhere decent pip management and power plant aiming can be a true menace for any elite NPC out there.
I got it for its range and because even though it was built upside down it looks pretty cool. Named it Platinum Hawk, Star Wars and Robot Chicken reference ^-^ Use it for exploring, light combat, refueling, repairing, and smuggling lol
My old Asp X got replaced with the Phantom. Was able to transfer almost all my engineered modules to the new ship so the price tag for the upgrade was about 30M with the 15% discount. So Asp X pilots...don't think about it. Just upgrade to the Phantom.
The Krait Phantom is the exploration ship I was dreaming of. Not just me, either. It's currently the 4th most popular ship going on Distant Worlds 2, with over 200 CMDRs heading out in it! Fun facts continue: 1st: Anaconda 2nd: AspX 3rd: DBX
Secretly, I was hoping they'd take the Constrictor have updated the model. The internals and jump range are different enough to have made it a separate vessel.
It’s like cars - the Python is the “luxury” model with a beige interior your grandad buys, the Krait is the SRi version you get when you can finally afford the insurance, and the Phantom is the 1.6 litre diesel rep’s model that will do 60 mpg on a motorway and comes complete with shirt hooks in the back. The real purpose of the Phantom is of course so FDev can sell more aftermarket ship skins and spoiler kits, but that’s still better than a monthly server fee, so fair enough really.
If youre trying to get a medium sized exploration ship that can also be an excellent all-rounder I could highly reccomend it if you have access to engineering or not its still a amazing all-rounder
I just picked up a Phantom yesterday and it's going well. It has significantly more jump range thank the Mk2, and since I'm not fitting a fighter hangar it actually comes out with more shields with Guardian Shield Reinforcements. Faster, jumps farther, more shields if you fit for it....loving it! It may feel like a ripoff compared to the Python or Mk2, but the jump range means I can go farther and still have 2 large and 2 medium hardpoints.
I bought the ship and fit it for exploration and then took it out. I got to agree with you on pretty much everything you said in this vid. Jump range is really the only thing the ship has going for it. I've got mine right at 70 light years (65.+ loaded with fuel) Not bad but not good. o7 CMDRs
1:47 well, i imagine it's like with jets, like f/a 18a, f/a 18b, and f/a 18c, they are all f-18 hornets, but each one is a bit different, why design a whole new jet when what you want isnt that far off from what you already have?
I really don´t get what you guys like about phantom´s cockpit.. I tried little bit exploring and I couldn´t stand those two stupid warning lights constantly blinking at my eyes. Not mention two massive frames blocking my view. Actually with the 3.3 update removing Orca´s restricted slots it now becomes pretty good exploration ship with good jump range and nice cockpit view. It has become my no.1 exploration ship
+Tattorack Mine is at a smidgen under 60 with legacy engineering. If I could be bothered to re-engineer it, I suspect I could get it over 60, although not by much.
@@TheTattorack Yep sure can get over 60Ly. And have srv, afmu, research limpet, cargo space, a huge 6A fuel scoop, and boost to 625m/s with a cruise speed over planet surfaces at 507m/s. Oh and not to forget it handles high gravity worlds like a charm thanks to proper thrusters. However as GiRayne stated, jump range in today's exploration doesn't mean a whole lot.
You buy it for a high end exploration ship replaces the aspx diamondbackx, it's a cheap alternative to conda. Or you buy it as a stepping stone to krait mk2 or python. Those are its only purposes or if you like its good looks.
TBH this is one of my 4 medium ships of choice for different rolls. Combat: Either Krait II (for SLF and maneuverability) or FDL (manoverability, shield sthrength, utility slots, huge hardpoint), multipurpose/deep core mining, Python. Exploration: Krait Phantom (Better Jump range and internals than AspX, lower price and better maneuverability than Anaconda (yes, that's a large ship), way better internals, fuel scoop, and fuel tank than DBX) . Making my first run to Colonia in a Krait Phantom now.
I have my phantom stripped down and light... Boost speed of 590... Max speed of 422. Jump range of 45ly (no guardian tech). It turns fast and can take on 6 Thargoid scouts with ease :)
@@maxslayer11 i've pretty much engineered it to the max (massmanager on FSD, 5A GuardianFSD Booster, and all lightweight mods) i´ll send you the link when i am home o7
For me Phantom beats ASP Explorer at exploration due to slightly better jump range, enough room to fit supercruise (essential when I need to leave the ship flying itself on a long supercruise to automatically enter orbit at the destination) ad it looks and sounds cool. In and around the bubble it gets places fast what your collecting engineering materials.
Hey, anyone else seeing the video like it was meant for the old school 3D? I'm on mobile right now and it looks like there is a slight offset in the red and green images.
Now make a krait designed for purely combat. One huge hard point where the ship launcher was and the three large points on top. I would never need anything else.
I definitely agree but I only find it good for exploring. Now I'm interested in what you are going to say about the Mamba because I personally thought it was a bad ship until you see how it moves around a pvp target in space. It's actually better than the fdl in that aspect. Hit box is bigger but who cares if no one can keep up. Just saying
I got one for exploration and its better than my AspX. I love the sound of it on it's boost and happy overall with it. But its no Gutamaya. And we NEED more Gutamaya ships!
Well, I had an unegineered Phantom fitted for VO mining (5A FSD, Undersized core internals, 96t cargo) and it jumped 32 Ly unladen, 24 Ly fully laden, without and FSD booster. That with 5B scoop and 5C tank. If you min-max, you don't really need to engineer it IMO.
Despite the lack of one LG hardpoint, I actually prefer the Krait Phantom over the Mk2 for combat. Gasp!! I know, it makes little sense but it handles better, is faster, sounds better while boosting, and has a great look. That said, I agree the Phantom is more of an exploration ship overall, it IS a multirole ship (sorry "The Pilot", I disagree). It can do all mining types, pirating, smuggling, or even trade to a degree. Like V. Jones said, it's all about personal preference. That said, I have 2 Phantoms yet I have 3 Pythons for various roles. Lol
Someone please inform Vindicator Jones that his EQing needs work. Classic first-time mixing error with scooped mids and nothing but shredding highs and boxy lows. Quite a contrast to Yamiks' vox, which is quite well mixed.
Krait Phantom is not ONLY meant to be an exploration ship. Its also makes a good stealth ship!
Riiiight. For all of those times you have missions that "require" stealth. All of them. I mean, who can even count that high...?
Not really. Not significantly more than other ships for sure... especially with the addition of night vision. Don't buy into the marketing... the "Hauler" is really a "Hopper" (as the only thing it's good for is hauling your own ass around), and the Krait Phantom is really the KraitX.

Real talk tho, it's about time we had an upgrade past the Asp Explorer as far as exploration ships go. I'm happy the Phantom has its niche there. I for one think the Phantom was done right. Now when are they going to fix the Crusader?
I saw that changling at 0:56
The phantom replaced my asp x finally!
That’s it’s only purpose. Asp x upgrade.
Have you got a moment to talk about our lord and savior, Diamondback explorer?
I kinda like the look of the smaller design for an exploration ship. If i recall correctly i can also get a bit of a boost to jump range over the Mk.2
Oh boy, a Vindicator Jones & Yamiks video?!
Scary isnt it
Even with a fully engineered fsd, it's jump range is still lower than that of the AspX. Or did I miss something?
The guardian FSD booster
Phantom is also a great PVP ship. It runs very cool with a huge power distributor.
Be a good pa ship.
the phantom is an explorer and stealth variant of the mk 2
the top section of the sip is also vastly different
i love both kraits wires, as they are only only ones in the game that look good
I liked the collab with Mr. Jones.
It felt dirty, but in a good way.
I build one solely for exploration and I love it ! even after 9months. I don't miss my ASPX a bit.
03:33 "Docking with Debby" ....Hahaha, Oh my sides!!! x'D
What is with the subliminal cartoon Pegasus thing?
Hah, shag carpet. Then we'd have Barbarella!
Wouldn't mind that so much; Barbarella's ship was pretty dope :)
I got it for its range and because even though it was built upside down it looks pretty cool.
Named it Platinum Hawk, Star Wars and Robot Chicken reference ^-^
Use it for exploring, light combat, refueling, repairing, and smuggling lol
The Phantom of the Space Opera. A spooky personal narrative.... Availible now on the frontier store for just 10$
My old Asp X got replaced with the Phantom.
Fun facts continue:
1st: Anaconda
2nd: AspX
3rd: DBX
Still waiting for a guardian hybrid ship
Phantom has become my dedicated materials gatherer and bubble taxi.
If youre trying to get a medium sized exploration ship that can also be an excellent all-rounder I could highly reccomend it if you have access to engineering or not its still a amazing all-rounder
Did anyone else notice the evil pony?
Reminds me of the TARDIS secondary control room.
.... I've also run my phantom into a planet..... Once.
Sexual innuendo. So much sexual innuendo.
I use the Phantom for mining. Love this ship. Great jumprange and awesome view in VR.
How is it for mining? I'm using the MK2 rn, and have had a conda in the past
I don't use mine for combat, it's an exploration ship. Pretty sick
Hahaha fuck the ending was hilarious. Hahaha just silence. Dammit yamiks
Why is there a random vampire unicorn in one frame at 55 sec?
Once you unlock the Frame Shift Booster, Phantom beats out the AspX for a Rat ship.
I bought the ship and fit it for exploration and then took it out.
I got to agree with you on pretty much everything you said in this vid.
Jump range is really the only thing the ship has going for it.
I've got mine right at 70 light years (65.+ loaded with fuel)
Not bad but not good.
o7 CMDRs
Wait. You fitted it for long jump range and wonder why it's bad?...
Can it do over 60ly in jump range?
Yes my jump range is just under 62ly s.orbis.zone/1cax and like you said guys, thrusters are amazing
And I forgot to mention, this baby just never overheats. You can scoop like forever
Do u still recommend this ship? Is it worth selling my asp for it?
build this puppy for full cool running and you have a very efficient smuggler
I have 2 Kraits...a Krait Mk II and a Krait Phantom. The Krait Mk II is my AX Ship while my Phantom is one of my Exploration/Stealth ships.
Yea, I actually bought the Phantom only to replace my Asp. Don't see any other reason to use it.
Now this what I call... a " DYNAMIC DUO " lol 🤣
Seriously dude, I love this shit 😂
I have my phantom stripped down and light... Boost speed of 590... Max speed of 422. Jump range of 45ly (no guardian tech). It turns fast and can take on 6 Thargoid scouts with ease :)
Which of the kiraits is a good exploration ship with out engineering
The Phantom is my new explorer with a 71ly jumprange ..and i love it
What is the build to get that range. Mine is like 59 to 61 ish
@@maxslayer11 i've pretty much engineered it to the max (massmanager on FSD, 5A GuardianFSD Booster, and all lightweight mods) i´ll send you the link when i am home
o7
@@maxslayer11 made you a link with my mobile
s.orbis.zone/1ckl
For me Phantom beats ASP Explorer at exploration due to slightly better jump range, enough room to fit supercruise (essential when I need to leave the ship flying itself on a long supercruise to automatically enter orbit at the destination) ad it looks and sounds cool.
In and around the bubble it gets places fast what your collecting engineering materials.
Krait phantom has the perfect optional internal slots for pirating and has decent manoeuvrability and top speed
Made 60 mil pirating low them diamonds with the phantom already made the money back going to engineer it to its fullest
If those Krait Phantom Cmdrs could read, they'd be very angry!!
(I'm a Phantom pilot and this video hurt my feelings :D :D)
I bought it purely for the jump range. Sold the AspX, and never looked back.
Hey, anyone else seeing the video like it was meant for the old school 3D? I'm on mobile right now and it looks like there is a slight offset in the red and green images.
Now make a krait designed for purely combat. One huge hard point where the ship launcher was and the three large points on top. I would never need anything else.
Plot twist: this is a favourite among AXI's veteran ring
As a dedicated explorer, kraft phantom is actually an awesome option for short range expeditions of 3 months or less, any longer and I use my anaconda
Answer to intro, the phantom is a little faster in realspace and I believe it has better jump range
0:55 Why is there always a pony in your vids?
I don't get something, when it comes to jump range we're talking about if it's engineered too right?
Well, I had an unegineered Phantom fitted for VO mining (5A FSD, Undersized core internals, 96t cargo) and it jumped 32 Ly unladen, 24 Ly fully laden, without and FSD booster. That with 5B scoop and 5C tank. If you min-max, you don't really need to engineer it IMO.
Harsh!! Great exploration ship :)
I'll never replace my old trusty Asp!
We had discussions on it, and I really need to upgrade my Mic, its super sensitive, and hard to dial in, and keep it dialed in.
How is everyone getting better jump than aspx? I built the phantom on coriolis with A rated fsd and G5 range mod and its maxing out at around 42ly
Did you downsize other modules? There is more room to downsize in the phantom and it has a smaller hull mass than the aspx.
