Once again boys you nailed it , super songs by a super group , R.I.P Paul Hester on drums , Nick Seymour on bass is Mark Seymour’s brother from Hunters and Collectors and of course Neil Finn is a true legend , Crowded House are still touring, I seen them last year in Melbourne at the Myer music bowl , they still got it 😊

At 37, god I’d love the opportunity to discover crowded house again, my father would blast them out through the huge Marantz stereo in the early 90’s. Neil Finn is well rated but at the same time greatly underrated!

Crowded House was such a great band. I preferred Neil's influence in CH over his earlier work in Split Enz (which was already brilliant). Crowded House has a really strong catalogue, and I truly cannot wait to see and hear the next four tracks.
Also, it brings tears to my eyes and a sad smile to my face when I see Paul Hester so happy here in this video. He is missed dearly and clearly left our world far too early.
This is great entertainment Ross, I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve.

Was? (you probably meant "were"), but both are wrong. Saw them live in November last year.

    • @lencooke944
      @lencooke944 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@ValerieKerr11 Hahaha, Valarie, are you a schoolteacher? If you are, then the tone of your comment suggests that you work at Crunchen Hall (The Big Friendly School). Sorry, I love a good Matilda reference.
There are singular and plural verbs. Let's keep it simple, because we can cloud things with noun counts and the like.
So, generally (yes, there are exceptions) 'Was', is singular and 'Were', is plural. Take notes if you like (or is that: take notes if you want? Hmmmm). Stay with me.
As I was talking about the (one) band, Crowded House, they become singular, even if they are made up of individual members. Tricky I know.
If I was talking about individual band members collectively (plural) you would use 'Were' doing something, like if I said that Neil and Paul 'were' eating goldfish before the show, it would sound correct. If I replaced 'were' with 'was', then I would sound like I were (deliberate) schooled with a loose concept of grammar.
Anyway, enough of that. It's just silly fun.
I somewhat agree with your second suggestion of me being wrong. You are of course pulling me up on the fact that Neil and 'friends' still play. Yes, they do. And I know Neil still is a master of his stagecraft. So, I won't argue with you on that.
However, I have to ask the question: did you see 'Crowded House', or was it (or were it [sorry, I can't help myself]) Neil Finn "and band" back in November? If it was (were) really Crowded House that played, then I accept your admonishment. If it wasn't (weren't), the original lineup, then, I wonder where the line is drawn where bands stop being one band and become another?
Valarie, if not on grammar, at least we can find common agreement on the fact that Neil Finn is one of the finest singer songwriters to ever have come out of New Zealand ... or Australia for what that's worth. Neil Finn is kind of like Pavlova, born in New Zealand, but found its (his, was, were, is) fame in Australia.

Still hard to believe that happy drummer, that spreader of joy, Paul Hester committed suicide 9 years later. It was such a shock and still hurts to this day. What a concert this was....just phenomenal. They did it all again on the opera steps over a decade later and again....bloody phenomenal. Crown involvement was through the roof on both occasions!

I was at this concert and it was awesome, I was also at Crowded Houses first gig at the iconic Espy in Melbourne, as they are a Melbourne Band the original name of the band was the Mullanes...Which was Neil's Mum's Maiden name, Tim Finn did join Crowded House for a short time as did Split Enz keyboard player Eddie Rayner, The Crowded House Drummer And ex Split Enz Drummer Paul Hester sadly took his own life after a life long battle with depression..Crowded House have recently reformed again with Neil's Sons and Nick Seymour on Bass...Neil has just finished as lead singer with Fleetwood Mac as the band has finished after the passing of Christie McVie.

They were such a great band live but somehow the magic that is Crowded House isn’t really apparent here. I think some of their best performances were when they were in their “busking” configuration. The drummer with just a snare a cymbal and brushes the bass player with an acoustic bass and Neil doing his thing literally out there on the street. When you saw them like this it was clear that they just loved doing what they were doing

Neil is an amazing writer & definitely his best writing was from the Crowded House era, this song while popular wasn't his best work IMO but check out their double album Recurring Dream, The very best of Crowded House, it's an album that even after 26 years still delivers, Elvis Costello once said he'd wished he'd written the song Private Universe, out of 34 tracks (some repeat live versions) there are at least 30 that are just outstanding still all this time latter, if you love the songs you have heard you need to get a copy of this album, you won't regret it, by the way Neil & Jimmy Barnes do a version of (Hunters & Collectors) Throw your arms around me & a mean version of (The Kinks) Lola (Live-My first gig) that are worth checking out.

    Great choice, Ross.
I’ve got the Farewell Concert on DVD and it’s thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.
Not only is the music always at a high standard, but the band is obviously revelling on the evening.
I always see the crowd out in front of them and get taken by imagining myself in Neil’s place - I’d have been completely humbled by the idea that you’ve got hundreds of thousands of people who’ve all come out to listen to the songs that you’ve created. I’d have to just take a moment to soak it all in.
With the massive crowd it helps to understand that Melbourne gets massive crowds to events; whether it’s Aussie Rules footy or the Grand Prix or the Australian zOpen tennis series, Melbourne can fill a hundred thousand seat stadium without breaking a sweat. That was never Sydney’s strength, especially back in those days. So to see that crowd there is extra astounding.

This was the first Crowded House song I'd heard back in the late 80s/early 90s. At the time I was like Alex and had no care for it because of other types of music. Kind of makes me want to go back and live my life from around age 10 and actually listen with adult ears to the music I was hearing.
This is definitely one of those sing-along Neil Finn songs. Definitely a crowd pleaser. The observation on the straightforward, solid drums from the last songs is absolutely spot on. Nothing spectacular but it doesn't have to be. Charlie Watts was the least noticeable member of the Stones, but everyone else in the band will tell you all of their improvising doesn't work without him.

Terrific track, it takes me back to my college student years! Alex, it surprised me to hear you say that you were a Crowded House virgin, since "Something So Strong" was a top-10 single in the United States . . . but I pulled out the internet machine to see what it had done on the UK charts back in 1987, only #95. But "Don't Dream It's Over" was arguably an even bigger success (another single from the debut Crowded House album -- I hope Ross is going to give us that one in the next two days!), and that only got to #27 on the UK pop chart. I guess you had to have something from this iconic concert however ironically from a song writing point of view and obviously IMHO this was not ‘so strong’ but hey ho there are so many more amazing songs to listen to from Neil and certainly some much better Crowded house songs, so loads to pick up in Neil Finn week 2 (hopefully)

Most of the time I’m screaming live is better than recorded..... but not with the Finn brothers.
Both talented and brilliant , but their live performances never capture the musical brilliance of their recordings or official video releases......
Their individual brilliance is in writing, composing, putting a band together and arranging...... not so much in performance.
