My daughter and I put together a great pinewood derby model with your advice. Thank you. She'll remember when she's older that I gave her my time and hugs and kisses.
This is the most helpful video about decals I've seen so far. Thanks! I'm not into modelling or anything but I saw a sale on Amazon and wanted to know what the fuss was all about! :)
I love applying decals, They sometimes can be that finishing touch. A great decal in the right place can make a model shine. Sometimes I like the model to speak for itself with no decals. Nice video sir.
Hey man! How are you doing? I used to watch your videos as a kid when I used to dream of being able to model half decent lol. I’m 25 now, and getting around to getting an old kit out the closet and giving it a shot, it’s coming out alot better than when I was 13 lol. I ended up searching up how to apply water slides and finding your channel and this old video just took me back haha. I see you’ve been inactive for a while. how are you? are you still modeling these days?
Just getting back into the modelling after many years away your videos are brilliant for rejogging the memory and for learning new tricks. Quick question? have you ever built the Doyusha Nostalgic Heroes Series 1973 Nissan Cherry X-1-R? I own the real car and plan on building a replica of it and a replica of the actual race car version that Nissan use to race.
thanks have never done decals myself but this video is a huge help Edit: have done my first decals and it works! It really is just as easy as It looks in the video
+ELP Modelling hey man can u review a z32 300zx and a s2000 Im really planning on buying them both but I wanted to see a review on them first u the best thax
Hi so ive just got back into modeling haven't done it since teenage years, come across your tutorials and thought they were great then noticed the dates of them so watched your vlogs and could understand if you've stopped or taking a break. The thing is i couldnt find out if you have. So my main question is Can u maybe update channel or website ? Hope your doing good anyways and your tutorials were great to watch, Would love some more in-depth ones maybe more on the lines of heavily moding kits, many thanks
thank you so much for this video. though i wish there were easy ways like stickers to be able to put it on the specific area. and i am a beginner but ofc it is human to be intimidated when not have done the technique in the first place
great tutorials! I want to buy a mx-5 nb from the 1999.jp website and the kit doesn't come with a hard top, do you know how to make one? like out of fabric or plastic?
+xDrifz Jasons E. Mazkalniņš Honestly never thought of it to be honest! You could either adapt an NA hard top, or an S2000 hard top from www.eightyone81.com using styrene and putty!
Can the edges of a (not yet wetted) decal be sanded, in order to " feather" the edges, so to make them blend in to the lacquer, and not be seen as lines surrounding the decal's letters, graphics, or whatever?
I would figure the gloss surface bit was explanation enough but since you mentioned clear coat, what about applying them to a surface that has been clear coated?
+Mathias Sammer Generally after the clearcoat. You will have a nicer surface to apply them too. Also you run the risk of the clear eating the decals if its too hot.
Can I remove old ones then refit them after Iv painted again. It’s hard to get new ones or they cost a lot Mclaren mp4/6 1/12 model that’s 4 years old now and want to repaint it and airbrush
Okayy.. But what happens if the decal you want to apply is microscopic? Like those red dots for Japanese planes for Tamiya battleships / aircraft carriers ? :)
Had a couple of questions, would really appreciate some insight; 1. If there is already paint (Tamiya Acrylic paint in my case) and the decal goes on top of the painted area, does the Micro Set damage the paint in any way? Such as remove or blob it somehow? 2. When the micro set is applied before applying the decal, the micro set is noticable in that it is very "glossy" compared to the surrounding area. Does that "glossy" appearance eventually fade, blending the decal with the background? Wonderful video, very informative and I look forward to an answer if possible! I'd appreciate answers from anyone, not just the uploader.
I once made an Airfix Spitfire and put the decals of the RAF roundel on the wings. The model sat in my cabinet after it was completed. when i came to look at it again the decals just came off like they weren't stuck on at all and even flaked away. Any ideas why?
I often have the decal edge fold under itself just as it’s sliding off the backing. No way to unfold it without destroying the decal. Anyone have any insights how to prevent or fix this?
+Adnan Jafferjee Sure you can do it without Microset. It just makes life much easier thats all. You're fine to use water jut don't use too much as it will have the same effect as soaking it for too long. The glue will dissolve completely and the decal won't stick :)
+k Gently tap the top of it, or gently bang (for want of a better word) it upside down on a hard surface. If not try and tighten it then try and release it. When its open, clean the inside of the top out and also clean around the threads of the bottle to save it happening again. When you use it again just be sure theres not a build up of paint on the threads too
Decal: *not sliding off*
Me: *panic mode activated*
TheNightDreamer exactly
I always submerge it, get it out when it comes loose and it applies just fine. It's from Revell if it makes a different
Lol
@@Dutch_fellow yeah I waited literally 24 hours for a Revell decal submerged in water but it still didn't come off. I was able to apply decal though
use warm water

Fantastic Tutorial! Really completes the models and got it right first time!
How important is the decal set fluid? I had a bottle but have lost it. Will water on the model surface do the job just as well?
Hey ELP where'd you go mate?
Exactly 2 years since last upload on ELP modelling. Please come back! Maybe just do one video a week or a few a month?! Please Elliot!

what's the best glue for glass and lights? the humbrol one i have just pulls paint off
+k th-cam.com/video/R1I3z9mf_z4/w-d-xo.html Complete glue guide :)
Hey! it's me, Apple Works. I'm loving your how-to series. i'll be setting these as my standard rules whenever i'm building. :)
I´m going to get started into the models. Do I need something more apart what the box brings? I mean, paint or stuff like that? Thanks man.
With most kits you need to buy paints glue and brushes separately but some kits include them 😉

When you do have a flat or matt finish, is there anything different to do that would help with applying the decals on that finish? Thanks.
Excellent! Simple and easy to follow instructions
This is an A+ tutorial!
This worked immediately for me!
Hey guy, where are you? come back to You Tube! cheers!
Thank you for this! Can’t tell you how many decals I’ve broke trying to do it with my fingers

Also I have a bad habit of buying complicated kits! Could you suggest some basic starter kits?
Thanks for the tutorial mate..
Any good clearcoat tutorials that you have or know of?
+Jimmy72nd Depends entirely on the clearcoat, but I'll have one coming very soon :)
Thanks for the tutorial! It was helpful and and I’m less intimidated now :D

Happy new year elliot
I would figure the gloss surface bit was explanation enough but since you mentioned clear coat, what about applying them to a surface that has been clear coated?
Thank's bros, you made this look simple. Did my first decals following your instructions and everything look's fine!!👍
Hey @ELP Modelling! Should I apply the bodydecals before or after the clearcoat?
+Mathias Sammer Generally after the clearcoat. You will have a nicer surface to apply them too. Also you run the risk of the clear eating the decals if its too hot.
+ELP Modelling thanks ;)
What's up elliot, been two years man
this used to be my favourite scale model channel
thank you do much for the amazing clear video..your voice and accent is so damn awesome
Awesome video bro! You are getting real professional man!!!
+KBTDK Wow thank you! As I said to Niki, so glad people have noticed the extra effort I've gone with on these new videos :)
when comes the second part?
I have a 1:1200 scale model aircraft carrier and the whole deck is supposed to be covered in decals, I'm really afraid of messing it up lol
How old would you class decals as old? Like a month or two? Or like a year or something
5+ years
If doesn't have micro set ? if the result will be same ?
And what is the use of micro set ? Thanks

1) microset does not damage paint
2) microset dries clear when it evaporates
Thanks for the video needed this info best tutorial yet. Hats off to you. 👍🇺🇸👍
Will the advanced video cover carbon decal application?
+Shakotannn Absolutely :)

Roll over decal with a very wet Q-Tip. Decal keep rolling up with it. What am I doing wrong?

I love videos like these, makes me want to finish that old Nissan ZX300 I have in a box.

How do I remove the original decals on my minichamps I want to apply the tobacco decals but they have put incorrect wording in its place
Thanks good video. Very nervous as I have a 30 year old trans am hood bird to go on a monogram 1/8 . Looks fine on sheet but I'm new to modelling 🥺
I know no one is gonna answer but what is a good starter kit to buy ? And what type of glue do u use
a: Wrong. b: Tamiya kits are good. (E.g. The Mazda Eunos at £13) c: Model glue. I use hornby/ airfix
always need advice on doing things thanks
+bigeddie1231 My pleasure! Anything in particular you're after?
Great video and helped me soooooo much. 👊
Guys question, is the water decal hold last for years? or will it detach on long time if not coated after putting them?
You need to clear coat them for them to last, they may peel off over time if you don't
What you just did, will it work if I try to apply it to my house key? I want to make my own images and apply them to my keys.
Yup, as long as you clearcoat it afterwards
Great video, helps a lot, thanks!
he posted a review on his blog back in october but nothing since then.
New fan here, hope you're well and back on TH-cam soon- thanks for the vids
They will stick to a painted surface right
How would I know if my clear coat would damage the decal?
Thank for the tutorial, I will apply a decals on my Gunpla model kit
Very helpful video. Cheers !!
Do you know any site to buy already made car models ?
+ayy lmao 👽 As in built model kits or diecasts?
+ELP Modelling Finished built models
+ayy lmao 👽 eBay is your best bet, or get someone to build one for you. But wheres the fun in that? :P
i have a revell set will it work
Harini Hegde Yes
Excellent video, thank you.
Well being 16 and doing a 1:700 scale Iowa class, I jumped it and soaked it too long. I kinda wish the helpful hints were at the beginning
Is it alright to do it without Micro Set? Or is it a guaranteed failure if I do it with just water, bearing in mind I'm a novice.
+Adnan Jafferjee Sure you can do it without Microset. It just makes life much easier thats all. You're fine to use water jut don't use too much as it will have the same effect as soaking it for too long. The glue will dissolve completely and the decal won't stick :)
where did you got
Thanks great tutorial short and simple
Just started again and the lid for my silver paint is stuck, do you know how i can get it off without cutting it?
+k Gently tap the top of it, or gently bang (for want of a better word) it upside down on a hard surface. If not try and tighten it then try and release it. When its open, clean the inside of the top out and also clean around the threads of the bottle to save it happening again. When you use it again just be sure theres not a build up of paint on the threads too
ELP Modelling That worked perfectly, thanks
+ELP Modelling Do you know anything about resin casting? I've been looking into it cause i need some more R34 wheels
