    I've literally never understood the negative connotations people attatch to being a redhead. I didn't even know it was something people didn't like until I was a teenager. I don't see why it should be any different from any other colour hair. I've always wanted ginger hair, I think it's one of the most stunning and gorgeous hair colours one can have!

    I'm a ginger and I have an INSANE tolerance to cold weather, I live in the UK and I only wear a second layer or jumper/jacket in winter, and you can often find me leaving the house without one some days. People always ask me aren't I cold even though I'm sweating in -3°.
    However heat is a completely different story, sometimes in the summer I open my freezer for a few seconds and stand next to it in a vain hope of cooling down...

    • @rctecopyright
      @rctecopyright 11 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      GabrielSparkletits I believe soundly is referring to peoples with dark skin and reddish hair, commonly associated with peoples around middle eastern areas. Malcolm X was said to have had reddish hair himself which would make him in effect a sort of dark skinned ginger. Am I the only one who gets an image of the lycan-vampire hybrid at the end of underworld after thinking about this?

    • @logansisco567
      @logansisco567 11 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      there could be multiple reasons why this sort of things happen: there could be an allele for the skin and hair genes, say the dark skin gene is dominant and the light hair gene is receptive, if both parents have the allele that gives them the dominant dark skin gene but double recessive gene for light/red hair then they'll have the combination of skin and hair color

    • @rynoxious1
      @rynoxious1 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      people produce both eumelanin and pheomelanin which make up the wide variety of hair color: eumelanin controlling blonde to black while pheomelanin controls amount of red in hair. and regarding the gene mc1r, that produces more of pheomelanin and almost no eumelanin, along with fair skin. but of course there is variation like in all genes.

    OMG I freakin' KNEW there was a genetic reason for my low pain tolerance!! 20% more is EXACTLY the amount of extra novacaine they give me. And the fact that after five minutes of direct sunlight, my skin literally feels like it is burning. Same feeling as if I touched something hot.
    Thank you for this! Will show it to my docs! :)

    • @scientistx5717

      That gene also interacts with several hormones and proteins so the mutation messes the whole chemistry upside down heck research shows red heads skin are thinner ine of the reason they get skin cancer more easily
      That gene was never meant to change as a color gene it has a variety of other functions and when it is messed with sadly variety of health risks and problems rise massively

    • @ConstantChaos1
      @ConstantChaos1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Weirdly though it's also believed that part of why redheads require higher levels of pain medication is that redheads are actually more drug resistant
      I've had multiple drs that and one even confirmed that at least for my psychiatric medications that was the case

    • @Oreothepig

      I was taught it’s due to higher drug resistance and that’s it’s really important to ensure all drs and surgeons are aware of this ‘ginger gene’ issue before prescribing medications and operations. Especially anaesthesiologists as I learnt from repeated unfortunate personal history when it was less commonly known.

      SuperBizalz Hey, thanks for the quick and polite response! You never know what you're going to get on the internet.
      Well, that might be strongly correlated to where you live. I live in Brazil. Here, as you would expect, being a ginger on a general note is very rare (even more so than on other places!). That being said, comments such as "Look at that dude's awesome hair!" are much more common (to me) than "What an ugly hair color." or similars.
      So yes, I guess I have a very different reality from yours on that aspect. Plus, I have seem comely gingers on both sexes, as well and not so handsomely featured ones.

    "Gingers are babies when it comes to pain"
    So, my friend Eve is a redhead, and she has a bone thing that makes her bones break MUCH easier (Is that grammar? idk). and she goes to school the next day, losing the support item (crutches, sling, etc) a few days after that. And she barely ever ISN'T injured in some way. I haven't ever seen her cry, though. Even when her one of our friends broke her finger, she still went to school.

    Gingers are actually more tolerant to pain. As for that 20% more anesthetic, it's because we also have a higher tolerance for painkillers making them 20% less effective. I saw a pretty cool video where they put a group of redheads up against non-redheads in a series of tests to determine physical tolerance to things such as shock, temp, and pain. It was pretty interesting, if you're into the subject.

      Andrew Benson I've been roaming the internet for quite some time on facts about redheads and I can safely say that the majority of the studies that has been made on redheads and pain shows that redheads have a higher pain tolerance towards thermal pain. The only source that indicates, that redheads can tolerate less pain is some survey that was made once that indicated that redheads were less likely to go to the dentist because they were dreading the pain that they'd have to go through.

      In all fairness, the redheads in the show were all from a very hot climate, California, their winter is what we call in the north a very hot summer. If Mythbusters had tried that test with the cold water on redheads from Iceland, the experiment would have lasted hours per person.

    • @dankayur2910
      @dankayur2910 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hapacalgirl I don't think that's quite how hair genetics works. Black usually dominates all else, implying that your mother is actually a carrier of brown and you didn't get her black haired gene.

    • @hapacalgirl
      @hapacalgirl 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Kayur Actually very little is known about hair color genetics. Additionally like other coloring (skin, etc.) it is more about the amount of eumelanin, and various forms of melanin that you produce. While it is completely possible that my mom is a carrier of brown hair (not sure how likely since everyone I met on her side of the family has black hair including my brother), it is more likely I produce less eumelanin which resulted in my brown hair since I am definitely a carrier of a MC1R variant. In addition my brother tans while I have very fair skin that burns easily. As for eye color, its simple genetics, brown eyes are dominant over all other colors, so while I am heterozygous brown eyes considering my dad is homozygous recessive for blue eyes, my eye color is actually brown, however my future children have the possibility of blue eyes if I marry someone who is a carrier of blue eyes.

    Also, that thing about being more sensitive to temperature actually makes a lot of sense. I absolutely HATE heat and humidity, and can really only tolerate 70 degrees Fahrenheit (depending on humidity) at most, without being uncomfortable. But I seem to just generally prefer lower temperatures than people I know. And I'm from Wisconsin, so 'cold' to me is like 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Any other gingers prefer cooler temps than people you know, or is it unrelated to my hair colour?

    Incorrect. We have a high tolerance to opioids. As a half ginger I can tell you that I receive no high from percs or vicadin. I only needed pain killers for extremely painful accidents like tearing all the muscles in my foot and crushing my thumb. It wasn't a pain tolerance issue, it was an issue with taking 5 pills just to have any affect of just barely taking the edge off.

    My favorite part of growing up red was no girls my age wanting anything to do with me, all of my grandparents friends being in awe of my hair(age gap 60+ years), getting made fun of for having red hair, retaliating towards criticism of my genetic makeup and being told to "chill you're white". But the best part is reminding everyone that we all bleed red, and i can remind you, if perhaps you've forgotten

      But it is best left as a mith or it would be yet another reason to discriminate against them. Better let the Europeans continue to get the slack for even the readheads are guilty of discriminating against blacks. But if you really want to find out, you can always research the subject.

      Natalia Ortiz Are you serious or just joking? Every gene of every organism in the world is a mutation. That's how dogs evolved from wolves and humans evolved from ape-like creatures. Through mutation. Your blue-eyed and fair-skinned friends are very recent "mutants" in the context of human history.

    • @DjCheryl
      @DjCheryl 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      fedfoofy IMHO - man did not evolve from apes....although we are closely related, there's a slight variance in DNA sequence that separates us from them....as is the case with other living creatures....in fact, it could be said that we evolved from dolphins....and, apes from whales....as we are all closely related....no tangible evidence has ever been found to support and/or prove evolution....millions of fossils have been found, and are still being found.... however, none are of animals in the evolution process....such as a fossilized half ape/half man..... so, the Theory of Evolution is just that to me...a THEORY for now....or, until it can be proven to be 100% fact....BTW, how do we explain the apes occupying the planet with us today? And the wolves? Why didn't they evolve? Maybe they overslept and missed the "Evolution Train"!!! LOL Like I said in the beginning....IMHO....so don't be hatin'....and, NO....I don't believe in the "BIG BANG" Theory either! I'm somewhere in the middle.......... like, "The Theory of Big Evolution Bangs"....or, something like that!!!

    • @fedfoofy
      @fedfoofy 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DjCheryl Hi, I think you initially misunderstood my comment. I said man evolved from ape-like creatures, not apes. Humans and apes share a common ancestor, but humans didn't evolve from today's apes, of course. But I also wish to clarify your statements about evolution. It is called the "theory" of evolution because in science, everything is a theory. Gravity is also a theory. Theory simply means an explanation, and a scientific "theory" is supported by evidence; it is not the same thing as an hypothesis. But you might say, "well there is the *law* of gravity," but that is only describing the mathematical constants of gravity like Fg = (GMm)/r^2. The actual idea that there is a force that attracts all matter is the *theory* of gravity. Now about the fossils, what do you mean "animals in the evolution process"? Every organism is a step in evolution, so every fossil is an intermediate form between a species in the past and a species in the future. Evolution doesn't happen in a day, so you won't ever see a half ape half man creature. In fact, if you were to find one, that would actually disprove evolution, not prove it, since the theory says that evolution happens gradually over thousands of generations. So when you mention the apes and wolves of today, they *are* evolved forms of past organisms. They have adapted to their environments well, monkeys in jungles and forests, and wolves in mountains and tundras. Evolution doesn't simply go from monkey to human, it goes from one creature to several different creature. That's what it means when we say that humans and apes share a common ancestor. A single species splits into different populations into different climates, and over time each group evolves separately in their respective environments, resulting in very different organisms millions of years later, such as monkeys and humans. And why do you mention the Big Bang theory? It is not related to evolution, and I never said anything about it. Anyways, sorry for typing so much and thanks for reading.

    I was told by several doctors that true redheads (not just people with reddish hair) have a high resistance to pain (except thermal) AND to painkillers - hence the higher level of anaesthetics. Both my mum and I have partially woken up in surgery. It is something to do with the relationship between the MCR gene, melanin, and the pain centres in the brain.

    The gene is actually thought to have evolved due to folate degradation in response to UV light. The effect of UV radiation on skin (causing skin cancer) does not become detrimental until after reproductive age, thus having little to no influence on successfully passing the gene down.

      According to what?

    • @AnimaSola3o4
      @AnimaSola3o4 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. We are simply more tolerant to the medicines that block pain. The fact that we require more anesthesia supports this, because anesthesia for surgery has nothing to do with pain tolerance. We just don't use the medicine as well as non-reds.
      But, there have been studies that support both hypotheses that we have higher AND lower pain tolerances. But as the video pointed out, the studies suggest that we have LOWER tolerance to thermal pain (makes sense since we have less protection against heat/sun), and HIGHER tolerance to other types of pain. In other words, we are more temperature sensitive, but have higher pain thresholds.

    • @mandi-von
      @mandi-von 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jake H There have been studies about redheads and their relation to different types of pain. Here is a particularly interesting article with resources listed at the bottom, but there are a handful of similar articles as well. :)
      sciencenordic.com/redheads-feel-different-kind-pain

    • @dankayur2910
      @dankayur2910 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      AnimaSola3o4 You're mixing up tolerance and sensitivity. Studies show that the average person of the hair colour feels more thermal pain than those of other colours and starts to feel it at a less extreme temperature but not necessarily that they can't put up with the same temperatures. You have a higher SENSITIVITY to thermal pain.
      This would logically mean that you are exposed to more pain throughout your life, potentially causing you to build up your ability to cope with it, your pain TOLERANCE. Since you don't experience any more non-thermal pain than anyone else (same sensitivity) you would then be able to withstand more intense stimuli than others might.
      This is, of course, all generalization though, your mileage may vary.

    • @AnimaSola3o4
      @AnimaSola3o4 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Kayur I don't think I am. Higher sensitivity and low tolerance are basically the same thing. If you're highly sensitive to something, you won't be able to tolerate it as well.
      And we do have a higher tolerance for non-thermal pain than other hair colors. I don't believe it has anything to do with the thermal pain or building up tolerance from that. It's just that we naturally don't feel it as much.

    About a century ago, people in England were still concerned about their children getting “rickets”, which is a disease caused by a Vitamin D deficiency that presents weak rubbery bones and bowed legs. Rickets is not really an issue these days, but an interesting anecdote was that redheaded children were observed to be resistant, if not immune, to rickets due to their phenomelanin being able to absorb more Vit. D than their darker haired peers. So… Mutation or purposeful evolutionary function? I guess it just depends on the shade of iris in the beholder.
