Belvedere is a magnificent baroque complex in Vienna, Austria. It consists of two palaces-the Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere-connected by a park. Let me share some interesting details about it:
Upper Belvedere: Built between 1714 and 1723, the Upper Belvedere was designed by court architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt for Prince Eugene of Savoy, a prominent Austrian military leader. It served as his summer residence and later became a memorial to his military and political achievements. Today, it houses the Austrian Gallery Belvedere.
Lower Belvedere: Constructed from 1714 to 1716, the Lower Belvedere was also part of Prince Eugene’s estate. The prince generously contributed part of his garden to build the Upper Belvedere. The interior decoration was led by Claude Le Fort du Plessy, with contributions from painters such as Carlo Carlone and Giacomo del Po.
Gardens and Orangery: The extensive gardens surrounding the palaces were architecturally designed by Dominik Girard. They feature water fountains and a buxus maze. The Lower Belvedere served various purposes over the years, including being used as barracks and a personal guard residence.
Historical Significance: On May 15, 1955, the Austrian State Treaty was signed at the Upper Belvedere, marking a significant moment in Austrian history.
