As a guy who's been in construction for quite a while now, I would definitely get 2x4 support diagonals on every one of those posts down to at least some stakes in the ground or the next footer before you try to build the top of it. It will help a lot in keeping the verticals plumb and you can take them out later. Been following for a while, keep up the good work!

Absolutely. Proper safety/helper 2x's would avoid putting the building coordinator's long-term health and possible damage to property/pets in harm's way. Matt - wanted to add, come hurricane time the weak point of those 6x6 ground attachments will be the nails. I suggest drilling through the metal brackets, at least in two points and insert long bolts and nuts.

Just a heads up
As a guy who also works on his own doing construction, good job! Tip for lifting any type of post on your own attach a long 2x4 (sometimes two)with one screw near the top in the opposite direction your lifting. As you lift the post the 2x4 pivots and holds the post from falling back down at any level of lifting kinda like standing up an open pair of scissors if that makes any sense. Then it’s braced at least one direction when up and can add brace for second axis to level it perfectly.
Why I watch other people doing construction after working all day still baffles me…maybe just happy to see others have the same struggles. My beautiful wife also doesn’t help me do any hard construction either😂
I'm with you, but Guess u haven't been watching this guy closely - he would rather slit his wrist than put a nail hole in that timber!! Like that fence- screwed from the back- giving minimum penetration and holding power to the slats so that u did not see any evidence of filled holes on the front😳

Stopped watching at the post fall. Dealing with building a barn with 16' 6x6 at the roof line, I could see an accident waiting to happen. I suggest that you set 2x4 braces on each post to hold the posts until you get the framing in place using lag screws. Now I'll watch to see what you did.
Yep, the smaller posts were easier but a hard wind from the right direction will blow the timber down boys. Please put in those 2x4 braces to hold them in place!
Matt, go buy yourself an LS 32 HP tractor with a Bucket Loader and a Brush Hog. You could lift those poste with it. I have 69 acres in SC and I went without a tractor for 20 years. Bought the tractor and now I use it for everything!
Have you ever built a tripod with a hoist pulley at the top? You should consider making 1. As a Retired military veteran at 54, I have been using mine for lifting poles, engines, a zero turn lawnmower and unloading steel off my trailer, loading logs on and off trailer.
I built a large church structure in Costa Rica lifting steel trusses in to place using a version of this technique!! I did have a couple guys helping with fabrication and lifting!!
100% ….for ideas on how to do that a different way using ropes at each end, look up Captain Kleeman as he puts in new beams to reinforce an old gymnasium that he is making into his HQ and storage.
If you had a tractor with a front bucket life would be much better. Your going to need one anyways for the farm. It's only going to make your life and back happier but its going to speed up lifting and moving everything 😂

Always have simple wood stakes and 1x2's holding vertical posts in 3 directions holding posts solid in place. Stays plumb and secure while fiddling with stringers, winds or anything.

The difference in moisture content is what causes the wide swings in weight. Looking good.
Eh, yes and no. He wasn't wrong with his observation about the growth rings. You can have two identical sized boards, same species, with one being double the weight if it's from an older growth tree. I see it all the time.

Especially with pressure treating. Some will absorb more than others. Which is also why the staining should have waited until they dry. (Usually takes at least 3 to 6 months). The liquid will still want to leech its way out.

If you lay down a two wheeled hand truck, roll a beam onto it, lash the beam to the hand truck, you create a lever. You can then lift the end and roll the beam into location.

Two issue I see, First, you are the man. In my absolute best days, even when I was young, there is no way I could have lifted and put any of those posts up by myself. Second, I don't underside why you didn't use leveling wood attached diagonally to hold the post level and square. I honestly can't believe the wind alone didn't tip them over...even with the few nails at the bottom of the posts. Thumbs Up!
I could see you were pushing it by the wild hammer swings ! At 70 now I am reminded of every overdoing it project been there. Health is a priority one over done can shut you down !

Matt, here's a thought. If you can the first 6x6 up and bolted in place, temporarily mount a pulley at its top, then use a rope to help hoist the next 6x6 vertically, and so on.
Also Matt you can trim out around the bottom of the posts to make them look better and 45 the corners looks better than square ends 👍👍👍💯✌️

I have always been practical in my building, for example I cannot stand a pergola, they've got trusses but no roof ,you can't sit under em in a rainstorm but we thought it fits the term "carport " because once Kristin has become erected and your house is complete, little Mattey is on the way, you'll probably get rid of the RV and park the pickup underneath it.

Just a heads up for plumbing up future poles or posts. When you get them stood up to near straight check with the level to see which sides is it leaning away from plumb the most. Put your fasteners in that side. Then if you’re going to use shims the opposite side until it’s plumb in that direction. In the other direction, find the side that it’s leaning away from and do the same thing. Only put enough fasteners in to start with to keep it from falling, but still allow you to pivot it. My recommendation would be to use screws rather than nails in the long-term. In your kind of weather with large temperature swings and moisture changes nails can have a tendency to start working themselves out of a hole. They do make barbed nails to help prevent that.
There such a thing as a fence post leveler, it fits on a corner of the post and it has a straight or a bungee that goes around the post and it has two levels on it that will allow you to level from side to side and front to back. Totally level

I have to say that all the work you both have done has yielded impressive results. It does seem somewhat unusual that you have undertaken the building of things that other than your primary abode. I think I would have done that first, but what do I know. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
This may come in late but a thought for future projects is using a dual wheel wheelbarrow. Place one post end on it and strap it on. You can balance the post on the wheelbarrow to make easier. Then lift the other end of the post and push the post to where you need.

It's good to see Kristen help out once in a while, just saying.
They're a team (and a darned hard working one); my guess is that Kristen does most of the things that don't make it to the videos.
Two suggestions: 1) Use 4x4”s; 2) Cast one 1/2” rebar in the concrete base pointing up and sticking out about 6” and drill a hole in the bottom of each post, which will then sit directly on the embedded rebar.
A second little well-meaning thought: two scrap 2x4 used as temporary plumb cripples (one double-headed thru the 2x4 into the post maybe 4 feet up) Then use your long level and the grounded cripples to help hold and plumb the post - secure the post with lag screws. A great job!

I know it's too late now. But, you really need to put temporary braces on each of the posts. Just a 2x4 screwed to the post halfway up and long enough to reach the ground at a 30-degree angle. Then you can stake it a hold the posts while you work up on top. Otherwise the way you are doing it is really dangerous. Be safe, we want to see your videos in the future!

Next time to
avoid the blotchy stain job ,try with two people , one spraying while the other one back brushing with the grain . It will smooth out and work it into the grain leaving a more natural even color.

For squaring the post bottoms, I use a circular saw with a guide clamped to each side. After the 4 cuts, I finish-up with a hand saw. Comes out perfectly square every time with no need to shim. Love what you're doing in your Jungle Sea! 😍

Just another way of doing it my pole buildings have the posts cemented in the ground. You dig or drill a 2 foot hole 2 foot deep you put a cement pad 6 inches thick on the bottom of the hole let that harden then set the posts on the pads, naturally align all the posts and keep them in place with 2x4’s then fill the holes with cement.

Angle braces on each post please, this will allow you to level them and create safety, also once your RV building cover is completed you need to have permanent bracing to secure it please. Love your channel and thank you for all the time effort you've put into it, please take care and be safe.

Matt, just and idea. You can run a 1x4, 1x6 or 1x8 "base board" around your posts to hide your mounts. That way, it doesn't matter about the facing.
the heavy one are full of water man , you need to set them on end for a week or more before staning them or you run the risk of sealing the moisture in and they will rot out fast on you . they need to be 100% dry before staining

That drill doesn't have hammer only setting, it's a cheap hammer drill, not a rotary hammer.

@20:00 PT is soaked in a chemical bath. 180 pounds is the dry weight after they dry out. Those things are at various stages of drying out. Heaviest is soaking wet through and through.
