Crazy on how actually great this device runs linux, perhaps when steamOS comes out we will have drivers include from kernel or some (non-free?) packages that we could install, if GPD bothers with that at all, that is.
On KDE 5.26 that I see you have System Settings -> Shortcuts -> Audio volume and there you select what you want and Add custom shortcut and then pressing the button is enough.
HoloISO appears to run well on it, for an official SteamOS release the ball is in Valve's court but they'll probably hold it back until the Deck stops selling.
Loving all the WIN 4 content, interesting to see linux working great apart from the fingerprint sensor. Would be interesting to see SteamOS running on this, ETA PRIME did a video on it as a matter of fact.
Phawx why are you not making any videos of the new 8840u gpd devices. I just ordered one and i can't find any videos really. Is this because it's essentially the same as 7840u ones? Still, i subbed to this channel because you would go deep in details about gpd devices. Sorry but please show us the win 4 8840u! Love your channel!!!
Is suspend-resume stable + working? Taki said on his discord that he can't get sleep to work on Windows, only hibernate. Wondering if it's the same for Linux.
I love how the onexplayer 2 got to reviewers at the same exact time as the win 4 and yet I've seen 1 video on the onex2 and so many on the win4, I think it's clear which ones the reviewers like more 😂
onexplayer even it comes to gen2, still heavy and no interesting hardware design, even it follows switch attachable controller, but not new to ppl. win 4 is the real pocket size machine with physical keyboard which a lot of ppl asked for after win 3 released. I pre-ordered win 4, but I like the design to detach controller when take it to work... I also got a win max 2, guess I will only keep one of them eventually...
I do think there are some packages that allow you to use a fingerprint reader. Can't really recall as my current laptop doesn't have one, but I was looking in to it a while ago and it does seem possible with most (laptop, mind you, this might be different) fingerprint readers.
I've got a gpdw4 myself with both windows and Ubuntu 22.04 on it. The volume button still doesn't work. But I've tried the SteamOS (holoiso), the volume buttons are working. I'll investigate on that clue when I have time

If it wasn't for those little buttons like the Vita I would love this device I mean I don't have it BUT there's nothing like full-size buttons like on the STEAM deck or controller,
And yet, everyone wishes that Sony made a successor to the Vita and none of them complained of the small BUTTONS. Hell, Switch owners don’t complain so it’s not that much an issue…just like the mousepad on the Steam Deck.
Is the built-in keyboard usable in shell? And how good/bad it really is? Seems like not a single reviewer on yt actually tested the keyboard, even Linus "forgot" about it :(
How difficult it would be to use a eGPU enclosure via Thunderbolt in Linux here? It would be great in a home usage when connected to a TV and a stand for power. Thank you very much and happy new year.
Is 27W total power with 11-12 watt TDP what is typical for you? On my WM2 in Windows, 12W TDP results in something much closer to 20W TDP - this is with say RDR2 or Ghostwire Tokyo running a solid / dead on 12W on TDP.
Preordered mine and in the meantime trying to find out how is the GPD Win 4 when it comes to fan noise? I guess using ultra high settings for tripple AAA games it might be roaring, but does is keep silent or at least very quiet during lower end gaming and emulation situations?
If you can make a video of try to run Lost Ark with GPD Win 4 I will appreciate it. I am really interested with this console but I am hesistant to see how it runs with Lost Ark because that is the game i am currently playing. Until someone show how Lost ark play in this device i am not sold to buy this.
Thoughts: -Good form factor; looks like a fat psp/vita but unsure if I can go back to a smaller screen coming from a steam deck -Why use Linux when it comes native with Windows? Windows more support for games -Does this have gyro? no gyro is a deal breaker for me now after being spoiled with it on the SD -How much does this cost and is the source trustworthy enough to give our hard earned dollar? -Thanks for this video as someone that isn't looking to purchase a new handheld anytime soon it's nice to look at other alternatives out there and seeing how the gaming handheld is evolving/devolving into smaller form factors? -Last point, how many out there would actually game at 40 watts TDP that gives less than an hour? maybe when plugged in only but what's the point of a handheld if its plugged in?
I'll try to address your concerns in the order you listed them below. 1. While it comes with Windows 11 pre-installed, I think it's just a matter of some people preferring the freedom to install and run whatever OS they want. I think this video is just to give those people who may want to install Linux information they would be interested in. 2. According to the officially provided specs of the Win 4, it has a 6-axis gyro. 3. The base price is currently $799 for the 512 GB SSD and 16 GB DDR5 RAM (6400 MHz), but if you spec your device to have 32 GB RAM and a 2 TB SSD, you'll be looking at US $1198. The middle option is 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD for $899, I believe. These prices include a 10% discount for purchasing the unit (reserving/crowdfunding) on Indiegogo before it reaches and begins final production. The units we are seeing reviews of are the prototypes. The company is based in China and I believe they are using Indiegogo as their platform of choice to reach a broader audience. GPD has had 16 campaigns on there if you include this one and they do have a history of making the devices that are crowdfunded and then selling them to consumers. You will get a device that is either the same as advertised, or very nearly identical to the prototype/advertised device. The issue I see is that because they are located in China and may not have international offices to assist customers, you may run into issues with obtaining repair parts or the like. This is just a guess on my part, I have not had any personal business with GPD until now as I recently posted the money for one. GPD is not a software company, but fortunately, the device runs on Windows and that takes care of a lot of worries for me. We'll probably only see community making applications for it specifically, so Valve has a huge software advantage over GDP. I would expect the SD to see more firmware updates. 4. I plan to emulate on this and play less demanding PC titles on it, so I'll probably see more like 3-4 hours on it before I begin trying to min-max it with lower power consumption settings, but I travel for work and if I want to continue playing something a little more demanding that I've been playing on my PC while I'm away from home, I can put up with plugging it in while I'm in a hotel or something. In all honestly, most of my playtime will probably still be at home just lazing about. :p Edit: the GPD device has more power with its newer CPU than the current iteration of the SD. I am thinking Valve will refresh the SD at some point but I don't know if they'll upgrade the CPU for more performance or not since, technically speaking, the price range it is in means it isn't directly competing with some of these more expensive devices.
@@Magnosummit If money is no object yea I'd get one of these too. But SD cost $400 plus Micro SD is cheap if you want to upgrade drive space. I'm happy there's healthy competition for handheld gaming right now. Everybody wins.
@@harissonbond7499 The point of 40W is that you can dock it and connect it to the GPU. At that point I doubt it would even need to go to 40W, but this would allow the CPU to get the full power and the eGPU to do the heavy graphics lifting. Now you have a decently powerful handheld that can dock and become a mid tier or better gaming PC. It’s an interesting prospect. I already have a dock for my Steam Deck to connect to a TV and use ethernet, so I might use 40W even for that use case without an eGPU. If you can do it, why not have the option?
@@harissonbond7499 I agree. I don't think the competition could possibly hurt the handheld market. I think for what you get with the Steam Deck, it's well worth it at the current prices. I shelled out the extra on one of these because I prefer the PSP/Vita styling and I really value the physical keyboard. I am looking forward to playing Morrowind on it, among other things. Also, since you mentioned the microSD slot for the Deck, these GPD devices do also have a microSD for expansion (I just forgot to mention it alongside the storage options). Anyway, sorry for the long responses! I have high hopes for the Win 4, but I still think the Deck reigns supreme at its price and utility to the average consumer.
Do you think there will ever be a handheld PC that is upgradable like how PC are ? As in the ability to upgrade that helps to prolong the usability to be able to increase the life span, as in due to affordability
Yes you are both right but a person can dream, things are moving a bit too fast to keep up as everyone wants those high res, 8k something with 200+ fps, I saw that because of this some AAA games are failing and indie games are getting way ahead if I'm not wrong
Pretty neat! Still on the fence if I should get this or a KT-R1. Small form factor is still the biggest factor besides power for me. Let‘s see if I can even get either shipped in under 3 months lol.
This thing is powerful enough that you can fully utilize Windows 10 without any issues. Hell, it's what it officially ships out running on, and is what the drivers are targeted towards. Running games through a compatibility layer isn't worth the miniscule fps and battery life saved
The biggest problem with running windows10/11 on these handhelds is that it has stripped out nearly all touch Utility. Windows 8 and 8.1 were GREAT on handhelds, but 10/11 removed all of that functionality. Linux has much more robust support.

When you see Doom Eternal run this well at these settings on a device like this, you realize just how insanely UNoptimized all other games are.
I read your comment and I still wasn't ready to see that performance...
Is there a future in such a device, I want to play Steam games in bed, please advise the best device, thanks.
doom games are optimized so well its insane
