Man you are my model. I work from home, got a 4 year old daughter, i play piano (started at 38 year old, I'm 40 now), doing Muay Thai, as a side project learning Russian, and I'm bald like you. I wish I could read more books though
I absolutely agree with you about your first point - have recently been thinking - no I won't listen to an audiobook while I tidy the kitchen I'll let my brain relax and put some tunes on. It feels healthier :D
Hey i am commenting because i really like what you do , as a 21 year guy i always thought it's too late for me to learn music but after watching your video i started learning guitar , thanks for inspiration.
Thank you for your videos ! I will be turning 40 this year. I played the piano when I was younger, i have been out of it for years although I am already in intermediate level. I will start all over again. I also started BJJ to challenge myself. Sometimes I do feel the struggle, like feeling being « lazy » but I need to work on myself ❤
Thank you for sharing. I'm 39 turning 40 this year, 6 year old son, full-time job with 1 hour commute one way (listened to audiobooks while driving, mostly highways), only started piano 3 months ago from zero (i can play yiruma river flow now - using Flowkey), 30min weight training 3-4x/wk at home early morning before work (woke up at 4.30am), 30-45min short distance triathlon training (run/bike) at home after work (built home gym and pain cave at home to make this possible), early morning swim in the weekend (10mins away), 1 rest day. 10-15min digital piano at night using headphone (now learning Comptine d'un Autre Été), bulk of piano learning in weekend. I do meal prep now, and just heat up meal when its time to eat with family. I plan my week on Sunday/monday. I strive to maintain this schedule at least 80% of the time, its easier during work days. I've accepted expected/unexpected life event to happen and adjust accordingly; House chores/maintenance, socials, demanding kid/wife. I'm still struggling to incorporate these habit; Journaling, stretching, mindfulness. I have not come across any side project yet, but the idea has been itching in my head. Thank you for your great example, It helps a lot to optimize my routine!! 🙏🙏🙏

Great content and advice. For me, patience plays a big part in being productive. I want to make all of my progress ASAP, but I have to stretch that drive to achieve something out over a long period of time to make any real progress. No matter how much I want to put in the work now. How does patience factor into your planning/day to day activities if at all? Also, is that Yujiro Hanma behind you?
Hey Daniel, this is a really interesting question, thanks for posting. I actually think that strength training and piano are both excellent for teaching the value of patience: for strength, you literally can't put in enough work in a single day/week to see serious gains, you have to do it incrementally and let the progress come. For piano, you CAN grind for 8 hours in a day, but you see more efficient progress from doing 15 minutes a day for a month. So I think I've learned patience that way, and internalised that it works for when I deal with other stuff. And yes it is Yujiro Hanma! Not a patient dude, but keeps me focused on growing a demon back.

This is extremely inspiring. Love your mindset! I'll have to try making a daily plan and routine to maximize the time I have to learn new skills since I definitely have a problem with consistency. Very glad I came across your channel ^_^
Dang im a guitar player who is starting piano and that’s how i found your videos but I also have been training bjj for 5 years and lifting for 10, i also read a lot and am addicted to productivity (though im also a procrastinator). This video is one of the most “me” videos ever haha i don’t have kids though so I’m hoping that allowed me to do guitar and piano 😄
Great video Joel, really useful. For a beginner do you think 2 X's a week BJJ is enough, I used to do it years ago and want to get back to it but struggle with the timing and commitment (and probably some nerves about starting again!) Thanks
Thanks Jon! When I started I did 2X a week and made progress - it's tougher now because you're going to run into so many guys at any academy that train 4 times a week and progress fast, but really you can make progress with ANY amount of training, especially if you keep notes after class so you remember what you've learned the previous week. There's a famous quote (about violin) that goes; “If you practise with your fingers, no amount is enough. If you practise with your head, two hours is plenty.” - I really agree with that

Very interesting channel. I am pretty much like you, without the success you had mastering many interests. I am on my way though. Out of curiosity. So you learn piano just 25 mins per day? I started learning bass, and devote more or less 30 mins per day splitting my studies in 10 minute bouts. I wonder if this is enough? I have people telling me that 15 mins is enough and nother people telling me that I should do 4 hours a days s:.
I’m very curious about your eating habits and how you get your food and how you cook. I’m just now starting BJJ and the odd training times kind of threw a wrench in my normal routine. I’m also hoping to have a kid with my wife soon so videos like this are very helpful. Thank you!
One day I'll do a whole video on how I eat (TLDR: a good hit of protein and fruit/veggies at every meal, unprocessed foods as much as possible, I don't worry too much otherwise), but yeah odd training times can make it tough. These days I have time to eat, and digest, BEFORE I train (I start at 8:30) but back in the day, I used to eat when I got home from training 2-3 times a week, and honestly it wasn't ideal. FWIW if you really wanna improve at BJJ while having a kid, then my take is that you have to prioritise your family first, BJJ second, then make any sacrifices you need to after that. I watch very little TV and the only videogames I play are with my boy, and I try to train at times when it's not taking away from times I'd otherwise be hanging out with him - but these I do have the luxury of a gym that has very flexible hours. It's tough, but super-rewarding, and if you can find a balance you'll be really glad of it in the long run. Best of luck!

@@zacharysimmons5597 I have a really old one - definitely worth it though, I don't read in the dark but it's great to be able to carry a variety of books easily, read one handed, and take notes that I can quickly refer back to whenever I have computer access
Thanks for sharing all your experience and knowledge. Particularly heartened by your advice on not multitasking. It’s a view I’ve had for a long time. Has never worked for me and find it so counterproductive. I loved the way it was described in the BBC comedy Outnumbered, something like, “doing lots and lots of things at the same time not very well”.

While there have been hours upon hours of riding (maybe 10 to 12k in aprox 12 years), I have been charged with this small crime: have no ego for asking the people who know. People love to be admired and will share a lot of knowledge if you are humble enough to ask. Don't invent everything yourself, specially in subjects that have well known techniques like, say, figure skating, cooking or chess. That's all I can think of in addition to the hours upon hours. P.s. A friend and master rider actually once did tell me "I'm on to you Javier. You've made this incredible progress because you keep grabbing advice from everyone. You call anybody -Master- as long as we spill the beens..beans... he he)
Were you ever a night person earlier in life? If so, how did you switch to being a morning person or did it come natrually with increased responsibility?
Sorry for the delayed reply - I think it came naturally with increased responsibility, but also there's research to show that our chronotype naturally gets earlier as we age (for most of us)
