I've been playing for about 15 years, but I'm inconsistent in practice and I struggle with reading. I tend to become frustrated quickly. Thank you for the advice! I think I've got one of my old schoolbooks that I can brush up on the basics with.
Thanks for the tips. Will try to integrate a few in with the other stuff I’m working on. I’m working through Arthur Migliazza’s Boogie Wookiee book right now. Thanks for sharing!
I tryed learning to read with the novice type of books but its very hard for me, I know, scales, chords, inversions, but they are all on my mind memorized. I end up learning/memorizing songs with apps like synthesia. My main issue is the reading of the two staves. Ill give a go with your method. Thanks
I've seen some TH-cam channels playing songs with that. I'll probably lean on that to get playing and then work on pairing that with referencing the sheet music.
Is being able to read music even that important. I've been playing the piano for about 3 yrs on my own and the way I'm learning pieces is through syntesia videos. In thr beggining it is much quicker and you can also follow the fingering
If it works for you that's great! I tried those videos very briefly when I started, and I found that I had to rewind a LOT, and was struggling to remember the pieces without a video reminder. For me, reading the sheet music (or having it in front of me) is the most efficient way to get the 'information' in
It's important if you want to play more complicated pieces easily. It does take a little while to learn from scratch, but when you do it it's so helpful when you're playing the piece, and actually makes it faster to learn than syntesia.
I play by ear...I've tried to learn sheet music a few times in my life, but strangely enough I can't get it down. Don't get me wrong if you hear me play you'd have no idea, and I even played and read sheet music for the sax in high school...but reading both hands at once breaks my brain for some reason...while doing it by ear 🤣
Kudos you can play by ear , wish I could too but rely heavily on sheet music . Also this is an excellent explanation of learning sheet music , I learned sheet music as took theory exams when young but could never read and play but after a huge gap in playing can suddenly play and read as took the same approach of borrowing loads of books and trying them out and training the brain to read and play
I'm confused. Why did you say Fur Elise is tricky. Its one of the easiest. Thats what I remember... Ok my first time on your channel. Will have to check when you started playing. I like your videos
Ok i just looked at your other video. For Adult learners. You've come far and from your perspective I can sort-of understand what you found hard. Good job man! Way to go.🎉 Would be good to hear where you'll be in 10 yrs time with music. 👏
ive got 53..i never play piano before...(lazyness)and suddenly,on my own without reading music...in less than a 3 months..i play very fast..very odd.....

Thank you for this...I'm 27 and have talked about wanting to read music since I was 14. This inspired me to start finally so thank you
You are the only person who has a realistic journey and valid points. Thanks 👍

Chords (keyboards and fretted stringed instruments for the most part), arpeggios and scales - regardless of the instrument.

Get a teacher in real life. Nothing like a few lessons from a good teacher

If your ears hear everything and your brain remember forever then no need

I feel like this about playing by ear - anything I learn that way I just CANNOT remember
