That gamepad driver sounds like a real hotshot, I should challenge him and knock him down a peg. But I heard that he tragically died on one of the chicanes at the old Hockenheimring, taking it way too fast and kissing the wall at top speed.
R.I.P. in peace, hotshot! You will be remembered! o7

The thing with Assetto Corsa is that it boomed with the Internet Generation and Modern TH-cam so people was able to get along and enjoy something in the modern day with a lot of recordings and saves online.
GTR2 boomed BEFORE the Internet Generation of TH-cam, Leagues through Online Forums, Mods and Game Patches which are a bit of a pain for those who just want to do some quick racing and not having to prep something up for a little while before having to jump in a race. Plus, no more Matchmaking and that's an extra step to getting into online racing.
Overall, the time of this game fell out of the modern era for it to get the recognition it deserves. rFactor 1 as well is going through its final days before falling into the same hole as GTR2. Dedicated Matchmaking has finally shut down after +18 Years and the main place for League Racing Results posting (LiveRacers) is shutting down, so that's another game that will eventually be forgotten or remembered by time.

    • @rogerwennstrom6677
      @rogerwennstrom6677 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I'd say yes and no: GTR2 certainly still was alive for the period of leagues through online forums, and it had a big modding community. (and the same can probably be said for even older games such as Gran prix legends)
It didnt have enough official patches though, I'd grant you that :)
If it would've had been supported better, perhaps it would've stayed even longer?
It wasn't perhaps optimal for quick racing though, and it certainly had quite a few flaws, quirks and bugs.

I love AC but there is no such thing as a simulator with no damage.
AC has almost zero damage. Even if u set mechanical damage at maximum there's barely any damage.
AI opponents in AC don't have any.
In GTR2 on the other hand both the AI opponents and you have very realistic damage if u set ur damage at maximum.
Bottom line is Assetto Corsa needs a good damage mod.

The main drawbacks for GTR2 today are its graphics, it's basic FFB and some AI issues, especially in multiclass races. I bought it in 2007 after playing the shit out of a pirated copy. Did more than a few league races. Played a shit-ton on public servers we had way back (GamersCrib FTW)
I still love it and play it every now and then. There are some brilliant mods for it. From the 90s BPR series to the GT1 seasons to the late 00s seasons. The classic 90s BTCC mod is fantastic too. The FFB to me is fine; its definitely not as nuanced and detailed as newer stuff but it translates what the cars are doing. There's some mods that improve the AI but its very track and car dependent.
But its the graphics I just can't get through. It seems stupid really but it's DX9 is just a bit too old for me. Maybe I'm jaded from playing it for so long - being stuck with a shitty rig for years tends to do that.

    • @tritekk
      @tritekk ปีที่แล้ว

for me it was the ffb, it was beyond awful on my t300rs even with fixes, i bet it would feel fine on an older logitech tho

If you look for only the high quality mods, graphics is not bad at all. I personally don't care too much about graphics but if you get the VirtuaLM tracks and Power and Glory mods for example it looks even better than vanilla.
Aside from the first lap I think the AI is really good in GTR 2. It is just as good as modern sims imo and it very rarely wrecks you or dive bombs you. But yea graphics are a bit old and physics isn't as advanced as modern sims

I picked up GTR2 about half a year ago (saw some vids recommending it and it's hella cheap on steam sales)
I gotta say it's probably my favorite Sim now. I always loved how RaceRooom cars felt and now after playing GTR2 and Race07 (had to pick it up as well lol) SimBin titles make me the most immersed in their games.
Also what made GTR2 stand out were the actual 24hour races you can do and the lack of UI in the game. Makes it really immersive.

I mean, if you fix up the AI, there is something beautiful, magical about running a 24H race, be it Daytona, Le Mans, Spa, Zolder, Silverstone, etc. Fix up the AI, let me hand off control to the AI and save/load races as I please, and those are things that sell me on a game, support all the inputs. You got my money.
Also GTR2 did not fall into the trap of modern sims of trying to be everything for everyone, it focused on two years of FIA GT, and the community did the rest.
Man, Spa was a blast in the 24h even with broken AI. Spa in Race 07/Evo was also fun too, I dunno, Simbin nailed, and Blimey! nailed, the feel of Spa and a car on the track at speed. Plus, come on, GTR 1 and 2 got something not many sims today get.
A demo. You had a demo for GTR1 and 2 that were here's a track, here's some cars, go have fun and see if you like it. And it had marketing, too. I remember my local games shop had floor to ceiling GTR2 display when it launched with a purple Maserati on the display flying down through what was supposed to be Eau Rouge., and ful on multi page reviews on PC gaming mags of the time, I'm talking full on PC Gamer/Zone/Format sort of mags and got praised for being great in those reviews. I mean, I want the next cult classic racing sim to have a a demo. I want it to have actual marketing behind it and have something great about it, not just oh here's GT3 cars, here's the Ring.
Point is. GTR2 stood out in 2000s racing sims, because of how good it was. It did something different and did it well, it did one thing and one thing very well. Was it perfect?Nope. But, it was awesome.

I had this simulator but at the time I was too young and unequipped to fully appreciate it. But I remember one thing that no other game ever made me consider: Engine braking when shifting down with cars that had no auto-blipping. Monza, Maserati MC12. Downshift, 4th, 3rd, 2nd... 1st-aaaaaand car spins. Why? I was not locking the wheels while braking. Keep in mind at the time I had no internet at home either, so I couldn't even look by myself. But then, it hit me. "When I downshift to 1st, rear wheels are spinning... slower than the asphalt I'm running on!?" I was still not considering that it was directly related to engine RPM and torque braking, but there it was. A perfect practical example of what a hardcore simulator such as GTR2 can teach to someone that was 13 at the time.

At some point i should get a 1/43 version of it but that's not a priority right now. Great to see someone remembers that our small country made one of the racecars of all time!
If you like the car this much, i do know the whereabouts of one of the drivers during it's lifetime, Bas Leinders! iirc, he works for some of the mclaren customer teams in GTWC europe (Optimum motorsport) and IMSA (inception racing) and often comes onto our F1 broadcast as an analisist. I also know someone who's a good friend of him, who also has possesion of Nelson Piquet JRs 2008 raceworn helmet, as well as funny and amazing stories of his (the friend) as a on-site vendor at some races.
Bas has driven a lot of cool stuff over his career, usually in association with Marc VDS racing (merged into Boutsen VDS in GTWC europe today). Stuff like the AM Lola B09/60, Z4 GT3 and Matech Ford GT GT1 and tested with Minardi i think.

I love the Vertigo. There are two versions of the Vertigo. The Streiff powered by an Alfa Romeo V6 is the one that comes with the game. They also built the .5 Spirit powered by a Maserati/Ferrari V8, but that one didn't race, didn't come with the game and had no downloadable mod that I could find. The mod I did find was the Maserati GT, powered by a 4.2l V8. With some document editing I now had two versions of the racing Vertigo, the V6 Streiff and the V8 Spirit. GTR2 is such a great sim.

I've been playing GTR2 since pretty much the release of the game. I still have the original disks, although I use a no CD patch nowadays to spare my disks. But it's always been on my hard drive for as long as I can remember. It's a fantastic sim and it deserves every bit of praise it receives. More people should try it. And as you say despite it's dated graphics, it has moments when it looks, if not like a contemporary sims but one that's a few years behind. Well worth it. More people should experience this title, and if I may, also bring up SimBin's other masterpiece (in my opinion at least) Grand Prix legends. Although you can get that experience in GTR2 alone with the Power & Glory mod pack, for the most part at least. Great sim, great video. I'm happy to see that there are still people out there that care for this piece of gaming history. I know this comment's been all over the place, and might seem quite incoherent, but I tried.

After I adjusted the config to my liking it felt like the best racing game you can play on the controller. FH5 for example assists you way too much and the wheel speed isn't adjustable enough so it always feels like some cheap mobile racing game where you feel out of touch with the car itself.

GTR2 and Race07 was my entry to simracing, but nowadays every time that I return to GTR2 I feel alienated with the game, right from the get go with his complex and outdated menu. So most of the times I do a race and uninstall the game. Race07 holds better for me.
PS: Try my controller settings for AC.
Speed Sensitivity 80%, Steering Speed 10%, Gamma 1.5, Filter 0.6, Deadzone 0.03 (or w/e fits your controller). And for the Race settings: Stability Control 70 to 80%, TC and ABS on or off, is your choice. It fits for everything, racing, rallying or drifting, and I'm on par with my timings, compared with a wheel, or about 1 second slower.

GTR2 still a golden masterpiece for myself, much more better than Assetto Corsa.
(Especially the modding community, there's no extra paying mods on GTR2 so I can play things like 90s Super Touring Cars stuff without paying extra fees like other nowdays Racing Sim.)

If you want it to look good and have an Nvidia card just run it with DSR at 2.2x resolution. Neverminded the HQ mods. They are good but DSR with the vanilla will looks better if your PC can support it.

GTL/GTR2 is proof racing games who does driving really well, is more important than graphics. if you play in 4K and the highest settings blabla in some new game.. but going over a curb is not satisfying, you wont play that game for very long.
RBR is the same level of cult driving classic.

    I love GTR2's immersion.
Specially when running the Spa 24h, which is what this game was designed for in the first place, and 90% of the AI retire from the race.

I agree with what you say about older sims , I still have my original discs for games like GTR 2 , Grand Prix Legends , GT Legends and others . I've been playing GP Legends for over 20 years and unless my wife threatens divorce , I'll probably play it for another 20 years ! Like GTR 2 , the graphics aren't great , but the immersion and feel is what keeps me coming back . I feel that a lot of modern driving sims have sold there soul , concentrating on appearance , sacrificing driving feel for bling . As for your comments about GP Laps - Jake is the man ! Like you I highly recommend watching his channel , he has a real passion for what he does . I'm a huge fan . Thanks for the video , hope it helps to convince more people of the value of these older sims .

i for one abandoned gtr2 after modders started gatekeeping the modern imsa/wec mods like they made these from scratch...then i realized playing AC is far better because what i was looking in a sim racing can be found in assetto corsa...the grandpas can keep hugging GTR2...

I find controller in AC easier than Controller on any other game. I just set it up as a wheel out of ignorance. I went back and tried using the inbuilt controller option but found it completely unusable (i steer with my right thumbstick and use the left for throttle/braking). But even if i didn't it still wasn't a good experience, so i went back to setting the controller up as a wheel.
Also, don't use traction control as, on some cars, it adds seconds to your lap times.

Man, I loved this game so much, although I had no idea how to set up gear ratios and lost many races because of it.
Best memory was getting fierce competition from a Ferrari 550 around Catalunya and noticing it started leaving a trail of black smoke. In a few laps it caught fire and pulled off track. Never seen anything close to it, besides in the original Grid when the AI drivers would lose their nerve and spin out/crash.
