Deus Ex Machina It's because this game has had its unique formula for so long. Imagine if Nintendo announced, that okay, the next main series pokemon game is going to be a real time game instead of a turn based game. While that idea would make for a good spin-off, you just can't do such drastic changes. Just look at other franchises, which tried to do a significant change to the formula, such as star fox, and banjo kazooie. Didn't go so well, now did it?
Muistimetalli Comparing Pokémon to Runescape is daft, but hey, there's osrs now and both rs3 or legacy. We should be thankful that every player can now enjoy whatever style of gameplay they like.
I Love Slutty Rabbits May not be the best example, since runescape is an online game, and pokemon is way older than RS, but both of those games have an unique style, which made them stand out. How about Star Fox and Banjo Kazooie then? No matter what kind of a game, people don't like massive overhauls, since then you're essentially buying a new game, which makes you question: is this really the best game of this type? But yeah, at least Jagex didn't ignore people who didn't like EOC, although legacy has loads of problems for pking. Shields are worthless, dual wielding doesn't make sense, since it makes you risk 50% more, and since you have the same DPS as someone with a 2h weapon, but lower individual hits, you really don't want to go with that. Most special attacks are still useless because of tiers, or being 1h weapons. High hits are way too easy to pull off, and the ideal pure would have 75 att, 1str and 1 def. With any kind of melee-using pker, you want to avoid leveling up strength.
Muistimetalli if you want. a better comparison I would say ssbm and ssbb would be a great example. Ssbm is better more skills shile ssbb is lame and easy. Just like eoc and 07.
I Love Slutty Rabbits It's not daft at all. He's talking about the principle of the change, the games don't have to be similar for that to make sense. In any situation involving a community, ripping out the heart of what makes a game enjoyable and changing it is never a good move...

You could never imagine how I felt coming back to runescape about four years after I stopped playing in 2010 when I saw all that changed, I gave up for another two years and returned again when I discovered Oldschool Runescape. Now I play it all the time.

YEAH BLOODY EOC! I was ok with all the bad updates they had, EOC was the one that ruined the game for real. Cause I played runescape because of its style, the EOC transformed runescape into dota/lol. If I wanted to play dota/lol style of game I would play those games!
Am I the only one who hates the graphical update Runescape received? The Art style that is?
Back then, the Art style was fitting. The game was looking medieval. Now? Everything is exaggerated. Everything colorful, and unrealistically detailed. Look at the armours for instance. I wouldn't expect everyone to be able to craft such detailed equipment. I would rather expect people following a known template. Everyone looked like a knight because the template was proven. Now - people add all the unnecessary aesthetics to an armour as if it is too easy. It no longer looks medieval, it looks like a WoW clone. Unrealistic details and exaggerated effects everywhere. As if it is a cosplay convention instead of a medieval themed game.

+Aqil Amran I would rather make them the rare aesthetic versions of standard armour. For instance you can make normal steel armour at level 30, and at level 40 you can craft their fancy versions to show off your skill. But standardizing fancy armour made it a medium and now - nobody really appreciates good looking armour. When everything is fancy - nothing is fancy.

The biggest problem with the EOC update I had was the flat out lies from Jagex in the game news. It was clear in the forums that the majority of players didn't want the update, but constantly in the news Jagex said it was popular and most wanted it. It was a lie anyone could see through with a simple two minute search through the forums. It was so insulting and a blatant sign that they didn't give a damn about the players.
+Burning Kitsune Mask EoC was mostly mod marks idea, and he refused to not let it be released, in several of his interviews he made it obvious, and went as far as saying it would "Never" be removed either. (and now that legacy mode is a thing, as well as oldsrs, mustve been 1 hell of a hit to his pathetic ego)
ofc this was the same guy who said that botbay/w.e program wouldn't ban innocent players giving his word on it, and then 10,000's of players got insta perma banned just for logging in.

+landmine36 One thing I always remember things as "the upset minority will be the loudest voice." It is entirely possible a majority of players like EoC and just never voice their opinion. But who knows...
I remember when EOC came out. I was logging on to RuneScape after school, I was really tired and I wanted to pk and do a quest with my friend. Then a long cutscene came along and I felt like I was in a different game. I tried to like it, I really did, but it wasn't RS anymore. I still miss the good old RuneScape ;(
Jagex's good reason for EOC :
"Hey guys, we want half our population to leave again, we kinda have too many players so I got a good idea!".................
Carl Johnson We never had to many players, we had to many bots, that eoc made people quit, yeah it did. But it's not the #1 reason the amount of player decreased a lot. Eoc haters will blame it for everything.

lolz poep You have facts to prove it wrong? You remember the bot nuke back in october 2011? How the player count decreased drastically, the fishing spots that were full of bots running around in free to play worlds, they were gone after the nuke, completly gone, months later a few came back, but since then, those spots haven't being horribly full of bots.
Remember the mining coal spot in falador? After the nuke, hundrends of bots in almost every world were gone, there are videos that have prove of the before and after of those places, go search it up.
Eoc, it dint decreased the amount of players no where near as the bot nuke did. Even if it decreased the player count for atleast a year, it started to grow back up because player started to come back, as always.
The skillcape changes wasn't Jagex's fault though, the update was polled, and the design was released beforehand, enough people voted yes, and then they complained when the update was done, typical RS community

cat intensifies they gave us pictures, to know how something will look you have to either see a short vid of it turning around or just putting it ingame, i actually voted for ''dont change the skillcape only update the icon'' which now sadly, i still think would've been much better, but of course, every member can vote and just as in real life, most don't even know what the thing is they are voting for and just vote for the current highest votes ^^

I usually disagree with the #1 but I completely agree with you here. The day they came out with EOC is the day runescape kicked the bucket. Wildy pking was bad and trade limit was fucking horrible (I myself was a merchant) but EOC made the game unrecognizable
***** Made it look better, yet there are many other better games compared to Runescape now, since it is like every other mmorpg. The only good thing Runescape has over any other game is probably the quest system, but the rest is shitty as hell.
Sepulchure Valen RS really does have a pretty unique quest system, but now that we're comparing MMORPGs, so does Elder Scrolls Online.
I have played Elder scrolls online (Even completing the daggerfall covernant questline (half way through the aldmiri one). But I'd still give the best quest system in an mmorpg to Runescape. But that alone isn't really enough to make a game top level or great.
runescape was good because it was simple. EOC was unnecessary and took away why the game was so popular
David Ferraro i wouldn't say its the only reason that made rs popular, but it certainly added a different style of combat for sure. either way, the old style of combat is back as legacy mode so no one need miss out.

I started to play runescape few months ago and I play RS3 first then try OSRS and I agree they should keep the old design but add like pauldron and unique design on the breastplate. The only armor that has the design of the old school is The adamant.
These updates were all very important to the game, they reminded Jagex why poll booths are such a good PR move
While I personally like EoC, I wish it was never added to the game. It was a combat update hated by an incredibly huge number of players with an even larger number not wanting or even thinking about a combat update in general. It caused more harm than it did good.
Theres no way i can agree with that. We'd never have arraxor or raids with no eoc it was for the best so every can play the game they want but jagex implemented it poorly at first
Jetzido they implemented poorly period. Unplayable for months, forced tens of thousands of loyal players to lose up to 10 years of progress to waste it on a completely different game. A lot of epic, saught after items became worthless as well

Jetzido "Finally" won't bring the thousands of players back. I've been playing OSRS for a while now, and I think I'm going to be sticking with that. RS3 left a foul taste in my mouth and for personal reasons, I doubt I'll ever play it seriously.
I felt cheated when firemaking got updated in RS3. It was the most click intensive skill and they made it as afk as cooking.

BlitzBaller0 most click intensive skill? go back to 2007 and try to fletch to 99 which i did, there was no fletch all option you had to manually create strings from flax and manually click on a bow string and carved stringless bow. I easily had to click over 1 million times easy.

Eoc was a piss poor update and Jagex knows it. Proof of this is the introduction of old school rs. They knew they fucked up and were going to lose half their player base if they didn't do something. So they used os to keep people playing.
EOC wasn't as bad as it was fucking stupid how they implemented it. EOC in 2015 imp is way better than the old system, but the way they threw it on all the players and didn't give us any choice was dumb.

Meek RS3 isn't pay to win at all. Pay to win means that you gain an unfair advantage by buying stuff with real life money. In RuneScapes case, that would be for example tier 99 weapons that couldn't be gotten without irl money. Is there anything like that? No.

But hey if u got the money then by all means let ppl buy bxp, it's that their money. U shouldn't let other ppl's experience in the game affect urs. I had to get 99 agility in ape atoll many years ago, was about 35k exp an hr. Now ppl can use silverhawks. I'm not going around saying rs is pay to win. I couldn't give 2 shits how ppl get their lvs. I had fun and still have fun playing rs the way I like it. After all I play for my enjoyment now others. I wish more ppl would feel the same

You couldn't make decent money in that time unless you already were rich enough to do the limited PvM or staking. Slayer was terrible money, even dragons barely were worth it...
Piraja27th / Mestasi I liked being able to alch things for profit though. Lol. Bots made supplies cheap as fuck, which made skilling cheap as fuck. Agreed though, bots were a problem, but it's not like they didn't have some benefits.

That was the year I started playing it! I think I quit a couple weeks after the jackpot wheel was added into the game.
I played from 2004-2008, but I was always on and off after that. I do remember some of these later things like summoning, and constitution... I just don't think I seen them in the game more than once or twice before the entire game changed and became unrecognizable to me.

Why and how. RS3 has more concurrent players than OSRS atm. I would just like to know how EoC killed RS. I played before and I play now and I think that EoC was bad at first but necessary and got better over time as it got the right feedback. but please be civilized and explain simply "why" i just want to know. i gave you my views, i want to know yours
If you haven't played EOC since the update, just stop talking. Runescape's combat system is SCORES better than the shit it was back in the day. Point...click....point click...
you wanna know why? because it was unique and tradition to how the game was. it was not EOC or RS3 that made the game popular it was the " point...click....point click..." that made the game popular. yes the the player count has w significantly since 07. anyone who "claims" to have played since then could see that. So if that is not proof enough that the game has gone down hill. Then I don't know what is. And if an update can cause this to happen, then yes it is a crappy update, no ifs ands or buts.

***** Uh, no. It is true that you would never reach a consensus, but an update where the majority are upset for good reason is arguably a bad update. Good updates are those that players enjoy and contribute to the development of the game, a bad update is one that pisses off a lot of people that has little to no value to the player base or game.
Ex. Runespan? Bad update. Introduces nothing but a semi-afkable xp orgy that completely shatters the achievement of the skill.

The count is all players on Runescape servers including both RS3 and Oldschool. Also, a good deal of the time, Oldschool is the one with the majority.
I remember when the wild was taken away. I logged on really early right before school to pk and I go into the wild and try to attack someone and a bunch of people were just standing around like "why can't we attack" then it literally made me so sad. I stopped playing my low level mage account and just went back to my main.

I played runescape from 2003-2012. held one of the top ranks in the game for a couple skills for a while. what killed it for me was all the skills eventually got easier and easier to train, and the veterans got no recognition for their efforts vs people who could do the same thing the vets did in a fraction of time. took me over a year back in 2005 to reach max combat skills, eventually hit max overall in 2008 until summoning came out, I would enjoy doing rs 2007 again but I don't really want to put in the effort again.

There’s always old school runescape, which is runescape, but the 2007 version where EoC, summoning, and dungeoneering weren’t in the game! OSRS gets new updates regularly and the updates themselves are also polled on before release (if 70% of the community votes “yes” to an update, it gets released into the game) there’s well over 200 quests, and the graphical style mimics 2007’s runescape look, and the soundtrack has more than 700 songs! (also the armor doesn’t look weird in this version lol)

Old school has bad graphics and even worse gameplay, you can't run around much and the entire combat system is based on luck and not skill. Personally, RS3 is a continuation of RS and will outlive old school in a few years if something isn't done to graphically improve old school.

I get your point, and I agree with the '08 graphics thing, if they made it optional, so everyone could choose to use it or not, it would definitely be a nice improvement, and I'd probably use it myself. I guess what I meant was the overly flashy outfits and combat moves and all the stuff you see in EoC today. RuneScape was never like that, and it never should be like that. But I guess we should be happy that OSRS even exists, if not, we'd all probably have quit and never looked back. I thought about playing RS3, but re-learning the whole game all over again just doesn't seem to be worth it now. I don't like what it's become these days, so not much motivation to play it.

Yeah, I agree. I actually got a visage drop back on RS2... it was 2008 or 09 I think, anyway, it was like 37-38m when I got it. Now basically every newbie and his mother has a DFS, so I felt pretty bad by looking up prices for the stuff I had in my bank.
EoC/Rs3 was a completely different game, unlike RSC transition to RS2. It should have been offered as a new, separate title instead of forcing veterans to try and adapt. Killing Jad became a Dragon-slayer-difficulty task, gameplay mechanics were forcefully and haphazardly changed, and, agree or not, the game, mechanics and graphics were broken for months before it even was REMOTELY playable. The management team in charge of forcing players to switch games should have been sacked ago.

I Agree with most of this, except for EoC. No I do not hate EoC, I didn't like it at first but now that I know how to use it, it isn't so bad. The reason I say EoC wasn't the best update ever is simply because it divided the community on a scale larger than any other update. The people who bitched about it can go to OSRS, or Legacy mode on RS3 now though, but obviously that won't stop them from bitching about it.

The Innocent Potato Not really. The new UI is very limited in what it can do. You can't make the old UI for example. Or maybe you can, but it's just too hard to do. It is more mobile at the cost of being much harder to use. The most important part of a UI is being easy to use, so I think that's just a bad trade-off in this case. It becomes unnecessarily difficult to use in order to become unnecessarily mobile. You could do everything you needed to do with the old UI and it was all already in a place you could easily reach. For the new UI it's hard to find what you're looking for and it's hard to find a good place to put it to use again later on. And you're not even free to put it in any way you want because they didn't even go all out with the mobility thing if they were doing it anyway. Like I said in the beginning, you can't even remake the old UI in the new UI, and that's just one example of what it can't do. At least, I don't think you can.

Removing the wilderness killed it for me for a bit. Then when EoC came, I was done runescape for good. OSRS just brought me back, and I'm loving it.

i left after Guthix died. i returned to old school with him were the world was balanced and everything was right.
I kind of wish the Wilderness was still gone. I miss the days between 2007 and 2011 where there were "bounty servers" where people can fight in the Wildy, while others on the other servers can explore without the fear of being ambushed. Even on the lowest-population servers I still find myself quaking in fear that someone will hunt me down.

I agree, the game should always get an update. But an update like EoC? No way. People liked Runescape because it was unique. No other games were similar to it, and that's why people found it fun to play. EoC made Runescape a shitty rip off of WoW, seriously. And yes, oldschool was released, but it also had a negative effect in the game. It split the community into two, which eliminated even more players to the original RS. What they should've done in my opinion was to never release EoC, but added the new updates to the game as they should've been added normally, like Vorago for example.

I just remember one time I logged in and it looked like a completely different game. I had to do a tutorial as if I was a new player, but it wasn't the tutorial island I remembered. Everything looked different, even the bronze armour and weapons. At that point I stopped trying.

EOC killed PVP to make skilling more interesting.
The added 0s to damage made it underwhelming to max hit.
The split OSRS and RS3 made it so the game and its mini-games are empty.
I miss house parties the most. Now they're nonexistent..
i actually liked the non PVP wilderness. I spent 95% of my time there Rev Hunting w/ friends. it was super fun and i quit after they killed rev hunting

I personally loved the summoning skill during it's original release.
I know longer play Rs3 outside of making money for Bonds, and stick to Oldschool, but still wish it came to Oldschool because it was something I always wanted in Runescape and loved it.
I do understand that many people didn't enjoy it and it will never come to Oldschool, but we all have our opinions

The game became so unrecognizable from the game I started to play in 2004, it became such a different game that it completely lost its charm and simplicity
EOC was actually the best thing that ever happened to the game IMO. Gives the player something to do apart from left click and occasionally eat. It also seemed to purge all the toxic players (outside of F2P worlds) , which Im guessing flocked onto LoL at that time around 2012-2013
