The most difficult thing is how to organise your files and folders and your work. Things start from one place and end up somewhere else because of the way things transpire and so many other factors. Then we don't remember where we have saved what and which file and folder is current or for what purpose and which one is up to update.. Things can get crazy.
Hello - Absolutely superb introduction and coverage of One Drive , thankyou. You have a great delivery , really appreciate the clarity with which you explain things plus that background etc really give perspective and context - great work.
Finally a well rounded and succinct description. Just subscribed, feel I can learn alot from your channel. Spent hours trying to sync my laptop, phone and Ipad. My lower task bar had the 'cloud' greyed out, and wouldn't let me sign on because I use Hotspot for everything, and it wanted WiFi. Btw love the accent and the beard 🧔
As usual Johnathan, a succinct video. I've just updated to a new Windows 11 pc from a 14yrs old Lenovo, now operating Windows 10 22h2. I've always tried to keep everything on my pc, but in truth I've kept a load of 'rubbish'. I use iTunes, iCloud, Spotify, and I do have One Drive, with 1tb storage, 'compliments' of Office 365, but don't really know how to use them. Do I need all of the various Cloud systems on my pc ? Trying to set up my new pc, and iTunes tried to sync 24,000 photos !!! Where did that come from ? I only have around 6,000 photos, tops. Anyway, your tutorial helped.
Nice intro video, wish I'd known about it before my disastrous initial interaction with OneDrive. After I bought a new laptop I uploaded everything to OneDrive set it to sync to the new computer, and then after that occurred, I ended up turning off sync, disabling OneDrive on both computers, and then using a thumb drive to copy my files from the old computer and overwrite all the downloaded documents on my new computer. In fact, with my connection speed, it took about 1/10th the time and I had all my original create and last edited dates back. I understand the usefulness of backup but cannot understand why it would now show your own create or edit dates as well as the sync date, which would be much more useful. It does not display (could not even find where it even recorded on the uploaded or downloaded/synced documents) the date I myself created, last edited, or downloaded (separate from or before uploading to OneDrive). The sync date is stored on my computer so it looks like all my files were created on the last sync instance. Unless there's a method I haven't been able to find I cannot see/track my own actions on the file, only what OneDrive does. The aversuib ti this is based on prior experience needing that info for legal purposes and also for sentimental reasons in tracking the dates that pictures were taken, when I scanned letters or notes from friends or family, etc. Having been in the US Armed Services, this sort of data was essential in several instances for my own self-protection. It was also true in my work as a contractor. I wonder how this affects things such as legal documents, invetigatory issues, etc. There may be more depth of data that I could not find, so if I'm wrong, perfectly OK. Just not apparent to me and I did do a few hours of exploration and testing but could not find whether or not the originator's edit dates were available in OneDrive's database.
Subscribed &liked . Detailed and informative. Are you using OneDrive or a different cloud provider? Do you perfor local backups? What do you use? Thanks for the video.
Thanks Jonathan an excellent presentation and introduction to OneDrive. Is there any way I can automatically backup OneDrive files to an external hard drive and then on set times will only backup changes to files?
So my mom has outlook and it says her storage is full. We clicked where it told us to free up space and then we had this whole ordeal logging into Microsoft. When we went into the one drive app we tried to find how to delete photos however we could not select any of the photos shown and it kept showing that they were uploading I think. We though we were deleting the photos off of one drive but apparently we were deleting off of the photo app as well. Her emails won’t go Through and we’ve deleted a bunch of photos already. Can anyone help?
Thank you for confirming that saving stuff to one drive is a terrible idea for files that you want to share with other co workers on an ongoing bases. That it’s clunky and bad because that is not what it’s for. Imagine being audited (student files Re provincial education funding) by a government agency and trying to create hundreds of folders saved in someone’s one drive, that each need to containing several documents that are all being generated by different people in their one drive and shared with multiple others out if one drive. Moving the files into the folders was a nightmare
Do you have any suggestions on how NOT to sync folders from OneDrive? seems they provide this "choose folders" feature under settings, but it's not working, if you de-select any folder, it will remove it from your hard drive, so irritating. thx,
I want to turn off all automatic featurres of ONE DRIVE and use it as a remote logical drive that I can manually move or copy files to from my physical hard drives on my desktop using FILE EXPLORER in Win 10. I am having trouble turning off the auto synch features and have found that there is a hidden directory on my desktop hard drive that contains a copy of everything I have stored on the Cloud Onedrive. This is using up way too much disk space on my desktop Logical C drive. You may be wondering why I am doing this and the reason is that I have two physical hard drives on my desktop and a total of eight Logical hard drives. This is to help organize all my files going back 20 years etc.. So you see, I really just want a remote logical drive for backup of my files to be copied only manually.
Great video. For a small company (5 users/laptops, no domain, just a windows workgroup) we want to use onedrive business and share folders with data. Is the info in your video enough to set it up this way? Of is there a white paper available to set this up the most efficient way? They are using it already but have problems seeing each other files and data.
Hi, thanks for the video. I am still a little confused. I want to save all my photos from my pc to one drive cloud. My pictures are in 'This PC folder. How do I get the 'pictures' folder to automatically back up to the cloud? Thank you.
Hi..Have scoured TH-cam for a tutorial that covers "what happens to existing content within the MyPC folders of Desktop, Pictures and Documents, when OneDrive is set to backup those folders..Is the MyPC content 'moved' or 'copied' to OneDrive ? If copied and all folders in OneDrive are set to "always keep a copy on this device", has one effectively doubled the hard disk space utilised on one's PC ?

Please use a step by step guide and give me as much detail of how to do it. Thanks again
Hi Jonathan, do you usually sync sharepoint sites or just add the shortcuts to onedrive? I always run into sync issues when syncing sharepoint sites Thank you
Hi! I have a problem at mycompany that I hope you can help me with. We use a single OneDrive account across multiple devices for convenience. However, recently after receiving a new laptop, I have noticed that anyactivity I perform on my desktop is visible to my colleague on her computer and the other way around. How do I stop that?
I have bought anew Samsung S23 Ultra and for some reason my photosvfro ny samsung gallery have gone into Microsoft Cloud automatically i am so angry i didnt allow that feature i have no idea how it happened as i cannot use any of my other Samsung features like getting rid of reflections etc. It wont even let me delete the photo.
Is it possible to see the photos on the onedrive app via android mobile but not on the pc?! And how could one download these photos on an external drive? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
What happens if 2 people are working on the same document and one doesn't have internet access? Will it crrate 2 copies once the 2nd person is back online and their version uploads?
Great video! Thanks for posting. Quick question. From what I understand is that the vault is only on your personal OneDrive not the Business version but you mentioned that you can store more in the vault with a paid version. So are there really two versions of the personal OneDrive? One associated with the free account and one with a paid account.
I loved this! When I am working on a Word document and I select the option to save it on the computer but it always appear on my OneDrive. Are all documents stored on onedrive even though I chose to save it on the computer instead?
Very thorough, but I'm not seeing an option where you can ONLY save files to the OneDrive cloud. For instance, when you open a file that is "available when online" with corresponding blue cloud, and then close the file, the file status will automatically change to "available while on this device' with corresponding little green check in white field in green circle. This means a copy will be on hard drive now too. How can you only store files on cloud and still use desktop apps associated with that file? Thanks.
Hi and thanks for your tutorials. I would like to ask you if it is possible to connect OneDrive to an external memory to perform daily backUps. I move my most important files to an external memory. I would like to make sure that every time I update or modify my files on the external memory, the same changes are reported on the One Drive cloud. I know that DropBox has an option called DropBox Backup which I have tested and it works very well. I would like to know if OneDrive supports the same function especially for linking with the Office Suite.
Good question. Don't know if one drive has that capability. Like that local backup featuring on dropbox. This is not exactly what you're looking for but Windows File history will work in conjunction with OneDrive to keep version copies of your files on an externally connected Drive.
My laptop is on Hotmail and there is also a photo and OneDrive (is it?) The smartphone is on Google and the photo is also on Google there, so I have a problem with OneDrive
Great video. I have 1 question -- I already subscribed to the online Onedrive / Microsoft 365. Do I still need to install the Onedrive app on my MacBook? What advantage would it have over the online version? Thank you 💯🖐
I find that if a folder/s contains a series of sub-folders that OneDrive only uploads the first sub-folder and subsequent sub folders are empty is there a way to overcome this situation? BTW I am from Yorkshire too (west)
Thanks for the prompt reply, Jonathan. I have been doing a bit of research and I found one comment that mentioned 'file size' so I will have a look at this. Added to that, I may have tried to add too many files in one go. My plan now is to start again and try uploading files/folders 'singly' and see if this makes a difference.
Very useful video, although I would point out that it's rubbish that you don't have an Internet connection on a jet plane. Perhaps you haven't flown anywhere in something like a decade, but if you have, you might have noticed that nearly *ALL* planes now have in-flight WiFi with actually fairly usable download speeds. I thought this video was really old on that account, but no, it's only a year old. Kind of obsolete misinformation being spread here, I'd say.
