  • I use big words like "bracket", "wire thingy", and "bezel". I also show you how to save $60+ dollars by doing it yourself. With only a few simple tools you may already have, you can do it too. Time to complete was around 1 hour and that will depend on your level of mechanical ability. However, it shouldn't take you longer than 1 1/2 hours. Please subscribe to this channel for more how to's, VLOGs, and other commentaries that you may find interesting.

    Spot on video. My 2004 TJ Sport was a breeze following your instructions. I sat my MacBook on the driver's dash and followed your step by step directions, less than an hour to finish. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

      It was funny, the look on my buddy's face when i asked him to record the video for me while i went through the steps to do it. Thanks for watching. That's an innovative way to get the work done. I usually watch a how to video and then have to go back to check if i missed steps. Pretty smart of you.

      I thought so, I got the same Columbia Edition. Have you ever tried replacing the sub woofer in the center console? Mine blew out a few years back and never bothered to replace it.

    • @daveinreallife
      @daveinreallife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I added one to the trunk. A cheap, WalMart powered sub that claims to push up to 300 watts RMS. But, as small as the passenger compartment is, and the openness of it, I didn't have to set the subwoofer settings too powerful. Quadratech sells a synthetic, rubberized direct replacement sub for the center console. Im sure it would sound great with a factory set up. I just don't know how it would work out with the wiring of an after market stereo like this. Most of the factory subs in the consoles blew because they were paper and several years of weather exposure (cold, heat, humidity) tends to destroy them. I did have the center console out to disconnect the wires from the factory sub so I didn't have to listen to it anymore. It was blown too. Sounded nasty even if the bass was turned all the way down on the factory radio. I cant remember where that would splice in to the aftermarket head. Good Luck! Thanks for watching

    Great video, helped me a lot, only hang up for me was I dropped a socket while trying to get the nut off the back of the radio that holds the anti theft device. Never did find that little sucker....hahaha...hope it don't rattle or I will be looking for video on how to take more of the panel off to further behind to look for it. Good idea also to take the anti theft device off completely, I could see this rattling down the road, I did not put the two nuts back behind the dash either, they appeared to do nothing but hold the bracket on anyway.

    • @daveinreallife
      @daveinreallife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would imagine that the socket will eventually fall down onto the floor boards. I hope it does anyway. I have a habit of putting the screws/bolts back into empty holes, but that would be acceptable if they don't serve a purpose otherwise. Thanks for watching and 'Im glad it helped!

    • @tedehman
      @tedehman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My aftermarket stereo had not been secured in the back to the "anti theft" bracket and the head unit does move around when on rough roads and the tabs on the "tin" sleeve broke through the plastic bezel which caused the head unit to slip inside the opening. It needs to be secured in the backside somehow. I am in the process of doing something about it right now.

  • @wermielyte
    @wermielyte 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very informative. Did you have to do anything special for the factory sub to work or is it integrated in the aftermarket wiring harness?

    • @daveinreallife
      @daveinreallife  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wermielyte It was integrated before, but my sub was blown when I bought the Jeep so I just disconnected it. It sounded horrible. You can buy an aftermarket sub that is a reproduction, with better construction and design. As far as if it will work with a new stereo, If there isn't a separate wire for that, it can be connected to one of the other front or rear speaker wires so it will work. Subs are designed to produce sounds at lower frequencies so picking up higher ones with this method will be non-existent.

  • @Hangryaf
    @Hangryaf 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi dave. I have the exact same jeep you do which is pretty awesome. I desperately want better stereo quality, naturally, so this video is great. I live in a crappy area. Of course nobody even looks twice at what's going on in there now. But I worry that this would attract attention w the top and doors off. Do u think this will be easily stolen or should I just keep the crappy stereo and get speakers that they may not see instead?

    • @daveinreallife
      @daveinreallife  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lane Mitchell you can do something like this www.quadratec.com/products/product_search.php?pn=14026.215,14026.23XX,14026.9XXX&cn=iVault%AE+Consoles,+Stereo+Mounts+%26+CombosKeeps your stereo secure for the most part. Although, most locks are for the honest people anyway so its really up to how safe you consider your parking spot to be. Jeeps are, for the most part, easy to get into anyway, so any valuable that you want to attach can be removed in your situation without any problems unfortunately. Hope this helps. Dave

  • @patricio5717

    Great video thanks for sharing! just one question, where did you get the all cable adapter to do just plug and play with the pioneer stereo ? is this a kit? came with the specific radio? thanks in advanced!

    • @daveinreallife
      @daveinreallife  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PatO Andres Pérez S. You can buy that type of harness at Best Buy, or pretty much any store that sells aftermarket car stereos. Just look for the one specific to the vehicle. The stereo itself comes with a harness that you will have to splice into the one that you buy, and then just like the video, its plug and play after that. This way, you don't cut the factory wiring. It was a pain to figure out but it was worth it in the end. I hope this helps. -Dave

    Dave, awesome video. I’m going to tackle this tomorrow! However, since I read that you were going to update the video, please don’t skip the wiring portion. Being as handy as a rock, I was hoping to see how you did it. It looks like you put a VERY similar Pioneer stereo into my exact model TJ. The wiring info would have probably saved me some frustration! Also, I noticed you put the Bluetooth mic on/near the mirror. How did that work for you? I’m going to try and mount it somewhere lower, near the bottom of the instrument cluster, to avoid excess noise with the top off. We’ll see! Thanks again!

    • @daveinreallife
      @daveinreallife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mike! Where I put the microphone has worked great. I have a soft top and it does pick up a lot of the noise from that but i'm sure it would do the same mounted anywhere else. As far as the wire went, I just followed the instructions that came with one of the kits, if not the stereo itself. Somewhere in all the stuff I got for the install told me what color did what and it just worked out. Thanks for watching and i'm glad the video helped.

      I believe I got the kit from my local Best Buy. Relatively inexpensive and pretty much any Jeep/Chrysler kit will work as long as it specifies 1.5 din for the size. The stereo I installed was a single din size, so the install kit was basically a filler. Here's a filtered search at Best Buy. www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?st=1.5+din+stereo+install+kit&_dyncharset=UTF-8&id=pcat17071&type=page&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=&sp=&qp=&list=n&af=true&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys

    • @daveinreallife
      @daveinreallife  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      compared to the factory radio, its freaking fantastic. I don't have any amps or subs, just using it with the factory speakers. The remote control that comes with it is very user friendly. As far as the bluetooth goes, its great. No sound distortion when playing music from my phone. Sounds just as good as if i was using the aux jack. Phone calls sound great too, but I only have a soft top so it gets a bit noisy for the person on the other end. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other question.

    I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 2 door. I wanted to upgrade stereo to one with a navi screen, hands free phone, etc. My tech told me I have a 1 and 1/2 din and a 2 din with the screen right in dashboard will not fit. So he put in a Clarion with a pop up screen which has already broken once since the heating vents are right behind the pop up screen. Can anyone advise?

      +Louise Merrick The space for the stereo is a 1 1/2 DIN, the newer models after 06 (JK) have the 2 DIN size opening. I wouldn't be able to suggest any product unfortunately, sorry

    Doesn't seem too difficult. Just not 100% sure about crimping the wires. Is it just as easy as crimping a wires to it's corresponding color?

    • @daveinreallife
      @daveinreallife  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't always work out that way since the harness manufacturer tries to match the colors as best as possible. Always refer to the manuals of course. The crimping is not as good as soldering, but better that twisting them together and taping. Sorry for the late response, your comment ended up in spam for some reason.

The only anti-theft I came across was fastened to the back of the factory stereo and also to the upper firewall in the passenger compartment. I highlighted this in the video.
