I figured the same thing here.. 90 dollars to mount these? WOW.. So it takes me an hour, not a problem. I just bought a motorcycle jack and I will save in labor alone, 150 for front and back tire labor. The jack was only 125 and I have it now for other things.
One, thats waaay easier than removing the rear wheel on my 06 Suzuki s83 thats also shaft driven. And two, that axle shaft wass in desperate need of some grease. Overall amazing video ☺️👍
Sooo... This last time I changed my rear tire I just put it on the lift, pried/pushed my brake pad back in as far as it would go (being careful not to mar the rotor up, of course) then pulled the axle nut off, slid the axel out and dropped the wheel down. Same thing in reverse to reinstall except I swung the caliper bracket up out of the way until I had the wheel back onto the final drive and my axle bolt fed thru just into the spacer. Then i swung it back down and lightly tapped into place and pushed the axel bolt the rest of the way thru. Tighten the wheel nut and the 14mm bracket bolt, pump my brakes back up and.. 🏍️💨
Say what U will. I still believe the most safety U can get from the rear wheel nut is to have a small hole drilled out for a carter pin. I know I am probably over thinking it. Lol enjoyed your video!thanks Bob for sharing!
There is enough torque on the nut that it goes nowhere once tightened to spec.Seriously you really think Honda engineers were sleeping on the job? Relax in my 40yrs of riding axle nut never ever came even close to get loose

I need to patch my rear tire and only way is to remove rim I also while rim is off polish rim too so 2 for one deal this video helps so much but I have back fork completely chromed so I gotta remove all that chrome first if only u seen this bike it is bad ass white wall Dunlop as well chromed front to back top to bottom

I'm still debating doing this myself or just paying the extra $50 in labor to have my local shop do it. I have the 1800C model and my first attempt taking the rear wheel off did not go very well. 1 thing led to another setback and before I knew it I had been going at it for a couple hours and barely had the caliper bracket off. lol

Thanks for the video, I recently got a VTX1800C and just pulled the rear for a tire change. I was able to take some shortcuts though. I left pads in the caliper and left the caliper attached to the bracket. I got the bracket stop bolt out of the way and slid the whole assembly up and off the rotor as one. I put a rag down and the bracket is sitting on the aftermarket drag exhaust. I'm sure there's some mechanics out there screaming, but I've never pulled pads for a wheel removal on any bike I've owned. Wiggle and slide caliper up and off then slide back in place when going for install. just don't squeeze the lever as mentioned, cheers.
I don't understand reasoning for greasing the wheel bearings when they are sealed and greasing the axle and spacer other than to maybe do a light coat to avert corrosion. I have an 1800 Retro that had a leaky bead and to mount I had the right saddle bag off and used a spud bar on the bag mount and thru the rim and wheel was almost perfectly balanced that meshing the gear splines was a piece of cake.
@@archiebunker7688 yeah, wheel bearings are sealed. Just a light coat of grease on the axle and a bit around the lips of the dust seal is all that's needed. Final drive splines I don't use grease. I apply Loctite 51048 "moly paste" to the splines.
I believe you may be talking about the brake return spring. If that is the piece you are referring to it will go around the brake pad. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.
I don't even think you need to remove the brake caliper or pads. The brake caliper and bracket would come out as one unit after the axle rod is removed and bracket bolt is loosened
Since rim is removed and taking off tire u could use white diamond metal polish on rims find at autozone local auto part store and corded drill also a polish cone those rims will gleam as if chrome
very helpful. next time a tire change or service is required ill be ready. this time I opted to have someone install my tires and give everything a once over since the bike is new to me.

I used this video to take the rear tire off of my 09 VTX 1300 R and and it was very informative however I will just add that you do not need to remove the muffler bolts on my model, there is plenty of room for that caliper bracket pin to slide out of the way as is. Also I did not remove the caliper from the bracket as there is enough room for the bracket and caliper to move the slight bit out of the way and stay mounted together, thanks!
Good video. Forgot about the caliper mount bolt, this helped. Might give more room, if you have the big radius two into one exhaust, I have it too, remove the rear section of the exhaust, two bolts and one clamp.
Either way will work just check it before setting the back wheel back down to make sure the splines are matched up. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

I believe it’s the same as the axle, I did the same on my last bike and she ran like a champ. the only other grease I seen used in this video is the brake grease. Pleased correct me if i’m wrong!
The recommended lubricant is waterproof grease. You should do a test to know if the bearings need replaced. Inspect the bearings with the wheel installed, rotate the wheel and listen for roughness in the bearings, use the wheels as leverage to detect wear by jacking the wheel off the ground and rock the wheel up and down and side to side to check for axial and radial play. If you detect play or hear a grinding noise it may be time for new bearings. I Hope this helps, Thanks for watching.

Try putting the transmission in 1st gear, if that doesn’t do it try it in Neutral. Hope this helps.

Rear axel is 81 lb-ft. and 22 lb-ft for the caliper bolts.

Your not suppose to grease the axles. Putting grease on the axle is bad for the axle. Your suppose to use anti seize

Hey Bob, Does the bike need to be in gear to line up the final drive splines, or can it be in neutral?
Either way will work just check it before setting the back wheel back down to make sure the splines are matched up.
