Another thing should be noted about sarcasm. Rdj is actually very careful about how he uses sarcasm. He never does it to put other people down. He actually uses egotistical humor in a subtly self deprecating way to make other people feel better. He makes himself the joke. Obviously it all takes balance.

Tony Stark is literally just RDJ but slightly more exaggerated. The thing I love about RDJ's Tony Stark is that he's practically playing himself in all the Marvel movies he appears in and his performance always comes off as natural.

Personally, I'd go for the RDJ persona when you first meet people, and then I'd transition into something more like Cap as I start to get to know them better. It makes them feel like they're genuinely winning you over as you interact with them over time, and that is a powerful feeling to have.

I agree this is very accurate, but there are some places where I feel like it's more generalized than it should be. For example, he said that RDJ's method of looking away from you when talking makes you want to work harder to keep his attention or walk away feeling like "I hope he likes me"... it would be quite the opposite for me. If someone wasn't directly looking at me and make me feel like they're not interested in talking to me I will just excuse myself and not waste my time in the company of someone who refuses to show me the same respect and attention I give them. They can reach out when they're ready to give me their full attention. I default to Chris Evan's and Emilia Clarke's style.

This all comes down to playing with status (see Keith Johnstone's book "Impro"). Both men are confident, but one asserts high status at every opportunity, and one enjoys elevating other peoples' status (either by lowering his own, or raising the other person's)
I think RJD enjoys being high status. He's been a movie star for a lot longer and is used to it. Chris Evans is more modest and humble. I think their individual personality traits had a lot to do with the Marvel roles they each got.

Bumper is correct in his assessment, as both RDJ and Tony Stark are ENTP's. Your statement is close, but not comple. The difference between Chris Evans and Cap are that CE is an ISFJ and Cap is an ISTJ. Chris cares way more about your feelings and what you think about him, and your comfort level, than does Cap. Cap's F and T scores aren't as far apart as Tony's F and T scores are. This is why so many say that Cap is so dull, while people largely say that Chris Evans is so cool, or is just the nicest guy. Cap is more duty focused, Chris is people focused, which is generally more likable when compared apples to apples.RDJ and Tony Stark do not suffer any such distinctions when compared apples to apples.

I think an interesting point to note here is that being very famous adds an entirely new benefit to these styles of communication. These concepts are certainly applicable for anyone, but it's important to remember that you will not be viewed as a "prize" to be won over by the people around you automatically, and acting in these ways (especially like Robert) is very likely to make most people just think you're arrogant. Yes, it can be done, but it's insanely difficult for an average person to find that balance. Robert has the benefit of his fame doing a bit of that balancing for him, because people already want him to like them before even entering the conversation. So, if you want to be the distracted, envied, cool guy - tone it down, and be super careful.

He(she) is generally not as much appointed as recognized and chosen. Whereas a boss usually is more likely to tell you what to do not do it themselves, and they will always be placed in that position or self-appointed, delegating tasks to those under his/her charge.

So I was just watching a couple of interviews with RDJ and Tom Holland for Spiderman (especially on Kimmel), and I was remembering this video.
But I thought how interesting it is how different RDJ was in these interviews ... he seemed to be using his charisma to almost continuously push focus onto Tom Holland (who is himself pretty charming and charismatic) and he was much more open about laughing at his jokes etc.
I thought that might also be an interesting study as well, how he may use his draw of the audience to actually benefit the other guy in an interview when he wants to. He could easily have dominated but you can see how giving he is to Tom Holland, and I think that translates into Tom Holland's relaxed confidence as well?
It's maybe similar to what you were saying Chris Evans does, but I just found the contrast really interesting in this case.

You can tell however, when RDJ is actually joking, and when he's serious. In the former case, there's usually a bit of a wry smile and a glint in his eyes, in the latter he's just blunt, preceded by looking off to the side (i.e. towards the camera/audience) as if he's saying "What the hell is up with this guy?", and will respond to the insulted reaction with a half hearted quip designed only to placate the target. Compare his reaction to Fallon to Kimmel or any other talk show host. Also note the difference when he's honestly being thankful, or expressing apologies to someone, and his "Would've been great to have you there" response.
Also note very similar reactions to that interviewer he walked out on. It's *very* clear that he doesn't care for Fallon at all. Which IMO is good taste - as Fallon tends to have the habit of getting way too blubbery and giggly

Years ago I used to be a huge Iron man fan. I idolized that sarcastic and flamboyant personality and found the character endlessly cool. But as I grew older I gravitated toward Cap more and more. Something about his genuity and unwavering moral center is very inspiring and reassuring. As a woman, I think that the cool persona is a lot more attractive than the giver persona, but at the end of the day as one grows up to be more cynical and experienced, you will fall in love with someone who makes you feel safe and content. So yeah, I would take the giver over the coolest guy in the room.

I agree. I am a female with social anxiety. I wish I came across as more confident and I am working on it. And I think Tony Stark IS cool in certain ways (I like him more as the series progresses)...but some of the things mentioned in the video I would never want to do even if I came across as more confident (such as make a joke at another person's expense. I just would never do that). In real life...the Captain America personality would put me more at ease. Ideally...a humble person who knows how to tease but does not push it too much. And yeah. I agree. No poking fun at anyone. And if someone looks uncomfortable - ideally they stop). Now I am trying to imagine a character that would be a blend of personalities. Star Lord, maybe?

I'm autistic and this video was very informative. In my own experience I struggle to make eye contact, I used to look downwards which made me seem like I was less confident than I was. Then I watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and noticed Downey's lack of eye contact. But he did it in a cool way, his body language is very confident, as you say, his lack of eye contact makes your audience try harder to gain your attention. Pair that with a dry sense of humour and I suddenly became popular. At the same time I am a giver, I want people to feel comfortable and that I am listening and that I care. So there absolutely is a perfect balance you can strike.

Jokes are definitely riskier because the other person has to be on the same page as you, otherwise they either don't get it (and feel like an idiot) or think that you're mocking them. Culture also puts huge barriers to landing jokes. If you put Downey in a room full of people who don't know him or his sense of humor, he'd just look like an arrogant asshole. But he doesn't because audiences are familiar with him.
I noticed this pattern while playing Boxers or Briefs. You can tell who is the cool jokster or the likable one based on which way they go: landing the right jokes and silly remarks or landing the truth and connecting with the person that way.
Great video. Keep them coming :]

Yeah i suffer with this. Btw, what is boxers and briefs?

    • @thereisa
      @thereisa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is a social party game. You play with a group of 4-6 friends. Each player gets 5 statement cards that have 6 statements on them. They all begin the same "I am..." "I like.." "I don't..." "I want..." "I have..." "I.." and some random statements after them. You go around in a circle and each person rolls a 6-sided dice that correstponds with a statement starter (I am... etc.) Then everyone else has to look at the statements they have on their cards and pick one that describes their friend. The friend that you are describing gets to pick 2 winners; a true statement and a funny statement. The person with the true statement is awarded a "boxer" token to indicate they won a round, and the person with the funniest statement is awarded a "brief" token to indicate they won a round. And you play and play until I think someone wins a total of 7 tokens. (It's been a while, so my numbers may be off, but that is the basic game play.)
It's a super fun game because you get to know your friends better. Over time, you may notice a pattern... People generally win more boxers or briefs because they are either good at reading a person, or they are very funny. It's a fun game, you should get it and play with your friends! boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/26516/boxers-or-briefs
