  • And it actually looks to be good? Now the first wind of a live action How To Train Your Dragon movie actually came out months and months ago. But now we’re starting to really get the good details - as TWO celebrity casting roles have been confirmed. And both of them, to me, bring in a lot of positive hype. From one end, you have a mainstay of the original animated production, Gerard Butler (voice actor of Stoick, PLAYING Stoick). And on the other hand you have Nick Frost, beloved icon, with the perfect accolade to fit right in. So come join me as I delve all the nitty gritty details as this DreamWorks cashgrab looks to be more appealing by the day, since after all, HTTYD Is Getting A Live Action…

While I'm sure that a lot of people will looking forward to this, it's HTTYD after all, I just hate the 'turn an animated movie into live action' as a concept.
Animation as a visual medium have been trying so hard for so long to be viewed as a equal by everyone so just the idea of someone looking at an animated movie and go "this sucks, it's should have been live action instead" for zero reasons other than it just happened to be animated feels almost like something people would do for no reason other than to try to devalue animation as a medium.
When was the last time the opposite happened where someone took a live action movie and turned into an animated remake? Let alone one that was actually good? I can't think of any on top of my head.
Doesn't help the fact that the only people I know who cares or likes live action remakes are mostly people who are too scared to watch a good animated film cause they are way too worried of being called "childish" by other people. Something an adult would only be worried of if they somehow never grew past middle school.

It's disheartening that even Dreamworks is going the Disney route, of remaking their animated features into live-action remakes, could you imagine what a live-action remake of Shrek would look like? Although it has the potential to work, this is still novelty, a facet that plagued the live-action Disney remakes, that could only serve to cheapen the value of the original work, moreover, I am not looking forward to seeing Kung Fu Panda getting a live-action copy, should that ever come around, but if Hollywood insists on copying their old content, I'll look elsewhere for new stuff.

Honestly if they go down this route, it'd be cool to see a HTTYD that follows to books more so, just so that it isn't a carbon copy of the already animated film. The current films are such a unique and cool adaptation with recognizable character and dragon designs, it'd feel weird to see that translated to live action without looking goofy. I also feel though if it follows the books more that there would be a large audience that would be upset to not see their version of Toothless (personally that's how I felt growing up with the books first and then seeing the first trailer years ago hahah, but I do love the movies, they're fantastic).
If it doesn't expand on the already known lore and details or lean towards the book's story, I feel that it'll be another stale, same-story adaptation. Sure it's not Disney, which gives me more hope, but man alive. Something fresh would be nice.
I also don't want this to sound too negative either; I'm glad to hear the og directors are going at it! I think it'll be good, just hoping they really take this trend and show other studios how to do it right! We just gotta wait and see what happens, weeee

As an aside although HTTYD the movies/tv show are inspired by a book series, the plot is literally entirely different. I honestly could summarize the plots of both the movies and book series separately faster than listing out the differences. It's so different that basically the only things in common is the names of some of the characters (not all of them, Astrid and the Twins didn't exist in the books for what I remember).

Why are Dreamworks doing this? Disney's remakes only got a bunch of money on the first few when the concept was new, by now people seem to be sick of live action remakes. Not to mention, Disney's remakes were, at least at first, of films that were old classics from the 50s and 60s (Cinderella and Jungle Book) or at least a couple decades earlier. HTTYD is only from 2010, and I don't know if it was the same long-standing phenomenon that something that Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast were. In fairness, it hasn't really had enough time to prove itself either way for that. Disney's remakes are making less and less return, and I honestly think this is a bad idea at this time.
You'd think that Dreamworks' team would notice how bad Disney is doing right now and realize that following in their footsteps would be a mistake.

What can a live action movie do, that the animated can not? Over all I'm hesitant to be excited for this movie, but I just have two things holding me back from being fully excited for it. First is, why? The other movies are perfect. I don't see what this new live action can add to the trilogy, it kinda just feels like a money grab. Second is the casting for Astrid. I understand that this is a fantasy world and so real life logic is out of the picture, but for me its more than that. For me Astrid was the one of the only blonde hair and blue eyed characters that wasn't either a complete popular brat that is obsessed with how she looks and how much everyone loves her or the "dumb blonde". She was strong and smart. She was understanding and while she was a good leader she was also a good listener. As a kid and even now, I could always look at Astrid and know that there was someone who looked like me and wasn't the antagonist or dummy. I mean Princess and the Frog is a fantasy story, but if there was a live action and we made lead female (because it seems that every race swap has been the lead female) white, it would be seen as majorly racist because it is a story made to focus on a black princess. The same can be said for HTTYD in that it was made about a Scandinavian town. I just wish that Dreamworks didn't fall down the trap that almost every other live action film has so far, and I hope that they are able to make up for it in other aspects of the movie.

It's crazy how every since universal bought dreamworks and put the head of illumination of all people in charge that they had made some of their most creative and best films in a long while from the sequels of the crowds 2, httyd3 and puss in boots to newer stuff like the bad guys, I only have faith in this adaptation

I'm hoping that they add some of the other characters from the books, especially Hiccup's Grandfather, Old Wrinkly whom i think David Tennant would be a perfect fit for instead of Spitlout, i think it would make a wholesome addition since in the books Old Wrinkly always had a strong belief in Hiccup and was his biggest supporter.

They need to have Alvin in it, and maybe even the witch. They are both standouts from the books, and even if they don’t show up in the first movie, I’d love to see Alvin in the second. Also it would help to have world building like in the books as well as a connected story, something that the animated movies lacked.

I wonder if they're gonna make toothless close to his 3d animation version or a more realistic version like the how to train your dragon live spectacular

I’m glad people are getting fed up with race swapping. If anything I think race swapping is racist because it puts the idea that other races REQUIRE a member of their race to connect with the characters

The Prince of Egypt is literally sitting on Universal's lap to be adapted into live-action, giving that they're doing a lot of musical films lately (Les Misérables, Cats, Dear Evan Hansen, the upcoming Wicked).

Its a religious movie, unless you're Godzilla: king of monsters, dont expect hollywood to even try tolerating religion in their movies now.
